Demba Ba signs off for the African Cup of Nations with a devastating forward display to send Man United to their second straight defeat. Anders Lindegaard’s clean sheet record is well and truly over, while Tim Howard nets Everton’s only goal as David Moyes’ side kicked off their double gameweek in downbeat fashion:

Demba Ba
A goal and assist for the Newcastle forward continued a remarkable Fantasy season that sees him sit second in the overall rankings with a score of 125 points, pre-bonus. Since he made his first start in gameweek 5, Ba has scored 15 goals and provided 3 assists and has so far picked up 18 bonus points, returning attacking points in ten of those fifteen first-team appearances. One of Ba’s best facets as a Fantasy player is his ability to produce whether home or away- 7 of his goals have come in front of his own fans, with 8 on the road; he’s the anti-Jonathan Walters, if you like. His departure for the African Cup of Nations is now imminent and with it will come a drop in price- considering he’s only 7.6 just now, it only makes Ba more of an outstanding bargain upon his return.

Ryan Taylor
With Gabriel Obertan failing to shake off a toe injury in time to face his former club, Taylor’s versatility afforded the full-back a place on the right flank. This allowed Alan Pardew to solve the dilemma of how to fit both Taylor and Davide Santon in the same first XI with the latter slotting in at left-back. Given that it worked to such devastating effect, the Newcastle boss may think twice about changing a winning formula ahead of the home game with QPR next gameweek. Certianly, post-match, the Newcastle boss admitted this was the best team that “was available“.

Yohan Cabaye
The former Lille man is coming to the fore as the second half of the season kicks into gear. An assist against Liverpool last week was followed by an outstanding free-kick against United as Newcastle shook of the lethargy of last week’s Anfield performance. It’s the first time this season that Cabaye has returned attacking points in back-to-back gameweeks and at 5.9, his set-piece duties and flourishing form could see him pick up plenty Fantasy suitors ahead of a run of games that reads: (QPR, ful, bla, AVL, tot, WOL).

Anders Lindegaard
With five clean sheets from his first five appearances, the Dane once again ousted David De Gea from the Man United first XI. His immaculate record was dismantled by a rampant Newcastle, though, as United failed to deal with their hosts’ determination and midfield dominance. Priced at 4.4, though, Lindegaard certainly seems just as capable as earning starts as the 6.4 priced Spaniard now but with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side facing four of the top six in the next seven gameweeks, including trips to Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs, their backline may struggle to produce the points.

Tim Howard
So far, it’s been a bit of a disaster for those Fantasy managers who loaded up on Everton players ahead of the double gameweek. A home game with Bolton offered plenty promise- Everton had conceded no more than a single goal in each of their last eight matches and with the Trotters out of sorts, a victory for David Moyes’ side was very much on the cards. Howard’s goal, a long kick downfield helped by the wind that bounced over stand-in keeper Adam Bogdan in the opposition net, summed up an unlikely night. Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman and Jack Rodwell were all forced off, with David Moyes anxiously awaiting the availability ahead of next Wednesday’s trip to White Hart Lane. Those who have plenty Spurs players, however, will be licking their lips in anticipation of more Toffees withdrawals.

Gary Cahill
While most of the recent talk has centred around his alleged departure to Chelsea, the centre-half hit the headlines for his on-pitch display last night. Cahill returned to goalscoring ways to secure a vital three points for Bolton, as his first goal since the opening day of the season lifted Owen Coyle’s side off the bottom of the table and helped the Trotters record back-to-back away wins. Priced at 5.2, he’s served a reminder of his capabilities and if Cahill’s proposed move to Stamford Bridge does, indeed, go ahead, he’ll no doubt attract the interest of plenty more than his current 18.7% Fantasy owners.

Chris Eagles
Afforded a first start since gameweek 15, Eagles got amongst the attacking points for the first time since the first week in November. Owen Coyle opted for a 4-5-1, with Eagles on the right and Martin Petrov on the opposite flank, utilising the pace of David N’Gog as a lone frontman. Eagles picked up an assist while N’Gog once again got amongst the points for the second away game in succession, netting the away side’s opener after they had gone behind to Tim Howard’s bizarre effort for the hosts.

Wild card fever kicking in yet there does'nt seem to be much transfer activity other than Yak and Ruddy (WTF???)

I assume Ba is going to start dropping soon too so have to ship the points magnet asap 🙁 but who to bring in for £8m or under that has form & fixtures?

Okay, playin WC for GW 24, with this lot:

    Krul, Mignolet
    Kompany, Enrique, Cahill, Simpson, Caulker
    Nani, Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sess
    RVP, Odem/Ba, Sturridge

Basically, Odem until Ba returns, and assuming Cahill is at Chelsea.

Only think missing is Ageuro. Thoughts?

I have Moses in midfield instead of Nani, just for my bench option with Aguero up front. I think the only other change was Senderos for Simpson just because i don't really like doubling up on Defendsive players, although it's worked in the past.

Sounds good. To get in Aguero, I have to change Dempey to Moses, but Dempsey has a nice run from GW25 to GW29. Thought of dropping Nani, but that scares me too. Newcastle and Swansea rotate well, hence Simpson/Caulker.

I have considered him - he always seems to nab an assist or a set-piece goal as well as any defender; but he's costly enough and you generally don't have the security of a potential cleansheet with him. At the price others preferred.

Good move. I misspoke. He along with Aguero and Silva were rested for the Sunderland game. That didn't work so well. All three came in in the second half and Richards hit the bar with a header. I don't expect Richards to get rotated while fit.

City won't have many subs if that helps but that 6-1 drubbing is a bad memory that doesn't easily fade away.

Too many injured players, too many players being played out of position and an over-reliance on players who may have seen better days. And get Phil Jones back into the midfield engine room to take some pressure off him after last night's performance.

I also thought I would never say this but get Jonny Evans back in.

Mark Bosnich, a regular contributor to Talksport, questioned Fergie's ability to decison-make at present; from the comfort of his armchair a few thousand miles away....

Jones has to play CB, Evans and Smalling are out till the 14th. Injuries certainly have been crippling but it also highlights the flaw in buying only young players. (De Gea and Jones) They need time to develop, and in this developing time you get the occasional pasting. I'd play 451 at city and keep it extremely tight and hope for a goal on the break.

          De Gea
          Fabio Rio Jones Evra
          Anderson Carrick
          Rooney
          Valencia Welbeck Nani.

They've become overly reliant on Jones after some great performances but he's still learning the ropes.... Having Ferdinand's experience alongside him should theoretically help, except that Jones is trying to cover Ferdinand's ass at the same time...

Exactly. Ferdinand needs 3-4 games to get back to speed after he's been out injured. Then gets injured again. The defence can rotate around Vidic but if he's out it's a complete mess.

Smalling definitely out? Last I'd heard we were hoping he'd make the Newcastle game. In an ideal scenario I'd like to see this:

            De Gea
            Rafael Smalling Ferdinand Evra
            Carrick Jones
            Valencia Giggs Nani

Painful to see Utd relying on a 38 year old giggs for creativity in midfield. He can still pick a great pass but De Jong would be all over him just like Tiote was. Let Welbeck charge about upfront and Rooney pull the strings i think.

I completely agree, I've never seen a United side look so devoid of invention as the one the other night, was depressing to watch. However I think we need to go with the three in the middle, Anderson was dreadful when he came on so it doesn't leave us with much option, other than playing Rooney deeper like you said.

Cheer up folks. This is exactly the type of game we will go out and win comfortably now after the recent debacle of the last two games.

Everyone is looking for scapegoats and excuses but worst of all they are once again using the brief window that opens every season where they go OTT on questioning the wisdom of SAF.

The only excuse I have agreed with is that the 1-6 earlier this season and the last two games simply would not have happened had Vidic been in the side.

      Never write United off.

Looking at shipping Osman and Agbon this week. Thinking the Yak in for Gabby leaving 8.5m for a replacement for Osman, was thinking Valencia but have Nani as United coverage and we aren't exactly in great form. Also considering Dempsey as Fulham have some favourable fixtures coming up.

The massive irony here - Carroll goes from Newcastle (looking a million dollars) to Liverpool and has looked way off form (from the bench largely) and Torres goes from Liverpool to Chelsea and is doing no better. Torres and Carroll together might have just done the trick at Liverpool.

I'd rather give Bellamy the nod in my team. Could understand why he didn't start v Man City...so what if he got sent off?

    Drenthe/Silva/Bale/Sess/Barfa

    Ba/RVP/Adebayor

    1) Don't know whether to use the WC now or transfer Ba out and do the wildcard next week? I don't think I need to make too many changes...maybe just Drenthe, Ruddy, Baines, Barfa

After hours and hours and hours of chopping and changing, followed by endless deliberation only to be followed by more chopping and changing, here is the FINAL draft, I think. Please pick it apart and put more doubts in my fragile head. thx

    Krul - Schwarzer

    Caulker - Kompany - Senderos - Jones - Santon

    Bale - Sessegnon - Valencia - Moses/Gomez - Silva

    Rvp - Aguero - Sturridge

Does it make sense to do Aguero to Yakubu for price rises and then get him back or am I risking Aguero rising.

P.S. Rooney I am sorry, I just could not fit you in, please don't punish me

I'd have Vorm in as one of your keepers. Santon to keep the left-back berth? Possibly, with Ryan Taylor being shunted up to right-midfield (and Pardew reckons that line-up last night was his strongest team).

5 match winning goals this season. 8 in total. Imagine where you'd be in the league without those goals. 10th?

I'd hazard a guess that him being on the pitch has prevented more than five important goals this season.

Yep, you always do well without him starting. Aston Villa recently for example.

Even without Lampard, there's not much we can do with Drogba and Sturridge standing around up front doing absolutely nothing.

Great point though, we did soooo much better when he came on.

btw where does Lampard rank in the greatest ever Chelsea players? I vahuely remember Zola being voted the best by the fans (no real surprise there!) but surely Lampard must be up there? Top 3?

I never know these things, but I'd imagine if there was a vote held then he'd be in the top 3. Him, Osgood and Zola.

Of course he wouldn't be anywhere my top three. 😉

Wildcarding and can get the following after yaks goes up tonight

    Krul (Vorm)
    Jones, Kompany, Assou-Ekotto (Naylor, Senderos)
    Nani, Bale, Sess, Silva (Surman)
    Sturridge, Aguero, RVP

Seems quite solid to me, and cant bring myself to lose nani

    thoughts ?
