Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If I'm paying 10m I want him to be a captain choice, would I realistically consider captaining KdB? No.

For me, KDB is an explosive player. Let's call him a poor man's Sanchez (flippantly). He will occasionally throw in a 15 point GW. But you sit through a hell of a lot of 2/3 pointers. This makes his a very expensive asset that you would never be 100% happy throwing the armband on

This is exactly why he's not in my team. For 10m I want to be able to captain him. You can't captain KDB.

I'd happily consider sticking the armband on him GW2, 9 and 10 instead of Kane.

For the reasons I put above. Kane, I am comfortable, will return 6+ points far more often than not. This is not the case with KDB. When he scores, he often scores big. But it's a big risk for a 2/3 point skipper

Kane, Kun and Lukaku also blank from time to time.

Still, the less people have KDB the better as far as I'm concerned, so go ahead and ignore him and spread the word so others do too.

Haha I enjoyed this. To be clear, KDB is a fantastic player who will score more than his fair share of fantasy points. But *from my experience*, he has a habit of being somewhat s**t or bust. Yes, you could skipper him when he gets a 17 point haul and mock me. Crack on. There's a reason why his PPG was 13th in the league last season (regular starters) even accounting for some mammoth hauls.

Everyone blanks from time to time. KDB is a player that, in Fantasy Football, is very hit & miss. You will get 2,2,2,14,2,2,6 - you can't captain that when you have Kane/Kaku/Kun on the pitch surely?!

KDB is quality - I'm not saying he isn't. But he is not a good FPL option in my opinion. The only midfielders in the game that I would captain would be Sanchez and maybe Cout.

As Going Home just said, if he was 9M he would be straight in my team.

Fine, it's your team you have in it who you want.

I just don't get the "I'm not having him cos I can't captain him" mentality when it comes to KDB. His points are still his points regardless.

He's feast or famine sure, but the acid test is when he gets a 13 point haul and Sane gets 2. That's when people will likely start wondering if the 1.5m saving was worth it.

I'm avoiding the City midfield and sticking with Aguero - that could change if his consistency (and when my TV) improves.

Why so? What is Jesus' role as a footballer?

not really, as they're all cheaper than KDB. The point was that at 10m he would want someone he would captain. Not that ever player in his team is captainable.

The question was, who would you have from Man City. I would have someone I would captain. I extended that to, "if I am spending £10m, I want a captaincy option". Obviously if Walker ends up playing right wing and getting 11 points every third week, I would want him. But at £6.5m, I don't feel the need to captain him

My point is that I think that many are choosing between KdB and Alli/Eriksen. If they are not captaincy options the difference is only 0.5 for a non captaincy player. If you are going with Jesus you are probably sacrificing Kane, which means you don't get more captaincy options than if you had KdB+Kane. And as I said, the difference between KdB and Alli/Eriksen is only 0.5.

        KDB.

I understand those fearing the captaincy issue but alot of big players haul.

I also don't think that a 10.0 necessitates that they be a regular captaincy option, depending on the make of your side. I've got Kane and Lukaku in my team, along with Coutinho, and I expect that Kane and Lukaku would dominate the captaincy picks in the early weeks. I'd be comfortable with either KDB or Coutinho when Kane and Lukaku have tough match ups.

          Exactly.

I honestly don't see why KDB wouldn't be a captaincy option when Kane has a tough fixture and City have a real easy one.

            Mine is:

            Foster
            Trippier, Cedric, Kompany, Daniels
            Coutinho, KDB, Willian
            Kane, Lukaku, Austin

            Elliot, Suttner, Carroll, RLC,

It's still strong in general I would argue. I think the pricing this year enables better starting 11s than in previous years.

                Definitely.

My main conundrum has been Alli, who was in the original draft, and who I think is undervalued. He was in for KDB originally, and then for Coutinho, but I've decided I want to split options in fear of the WHL effect, and to cover Liverpool and City.

I wouldnt be surprised though, if longer term, Lukaku becomes Jesus and KDB becomes Hazard.

You would have to play Carroll/RLC as your 4th mid which is not ideal. Most have them as 5th mids.

Or upgrade one of the 4m defs to a 4.5 and go 4-3-3

I think you need more balance between midfield and attack, downgrade one of your strikers and get a premium mid or two

I can't understand why people are obsessed with formation.

A team at the start of the season consists of £100m divided by 15 players who are all priced depending on FPL's guess at what their potential points score will be by the end of 38 gameweeks.
We then take in to account the special conditions:
    * Captaincy - this means you need at least one very high points scorer even though they are often worse value for money.
    * Allowable formations - don't pick two good keepers as you can only play one, remember you can only play 7 of your front 8.
    * Fixtures/Form - allowing weekly transfers means you can try to get players with short term prospects which outweigh their valuation.

As long as the conditions for an allowable formation are followed it makes no difference with you play 352 or 523. You just fit in the players who you believe have the highest points potential vs their valuation.

It's mainly about flexibility I guess, having players at different price points let's you downgrade more easily if a player you don't own explodes and you need him in your team. Formations with only 3 defenders are more popular because attackers can get you short term points and will rise in price more rapidly

Your last sentence explains why people are "mildly interested" in formation lol.

Do defenders of similar value lead to better point potential? That's the very question formation is looking to address

GOT'S The Hounds dig at Gareth Bale?

In a recent episode The Hound calls out his compatriot for wearing a "top knot" hair style to cover his thinning/ balding head.

Here is the clip on youtube, and it's 1 minute 19 seconds in.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej3ewhmILNc

Do we think this is a direct dig at Gareth Bale who is also thought to be covering a bald patch with a Spanish "Top Knot"

WBA haven't looked good so far, not sure I'd double up on them.

Not sure about having 2 4.5's benched either. Imo you only need two playing bench options.

In other words: Lascelles or Mee -> 4.0 fodder, and Dawson -> Trippier?

I'd like to advocate Daniels as an almost essential pick.

He managed 134 points last season in 3060 minutes - 130 the season before in 3285. He is really consistent, with clear attacking potential. He was the sixth highest scoring defender in the game last season, and cheaper than all those above him.

134 points also compares well to good midfield options like Lanzini at 7.0 (133 points in 2708 minutes) Arnautovic at the same (117 in 2713 minutes) or Philips at 6.0 (115 but in only 2181 minutes). Pogba (8.0) meanwhile returned 115 points in 2608 minutes.

I think he is one of the underpriced players in the game - I would have expected a player returning 130 plus in 2 successive seasons to have been 5.5. Bertrand has returned 140, 106, and 123 in the last 3 and come in at that.

Yeah - I love what Eddie Howe has done. He was my pick for Roberto Martinez's replacement at Everton, although Koeman is a very solid manager.

He plays a good brand of football, and is willing to change things up when needed. He innovates too.

As a United fan, I hate the way Jose plays. We are terrible to watch & we should take a leaf out of their book. Hoping for great things from Kaku but not holding my breath.

Unfortunately, I'm having a similar feeling with Koeman. Like Mourinho, he is very much a safety first manager. It was great to see us back on track last year, but I think Everton will be very narrow, dogged, and honestly a little boring this season.

I expect United and Everton will be among the best defences in the division (offering great value for defensive prospects in fpl), but the football will a little frustrating and boring in general.

I'm not sure Ake is underpriced but he might well be - he was superb, and offers a great goal threat. I think my attraction to Daniels is two seasons of consistency, whereas Ake only had half a season really.

But I expect them both to do well, and with a better gk behind them now too.

Yeah, well Everton were a force last season defensively and I'd agree with you in regards to value too. Only thing is your incredibly tough start to the season coupled with qualifiers - its gonna be a proper slog!

Yeah, I think they will both do well. Also interested to see how the King/Defoe partnership will work. They could be great, I love Josh King and Defoe is a stellar footballer.

Anyone know who the drafting order is determined in the FPL draft? Is it random once the draft starts or based on the order you join, so if you show as 3rd place in the hub does that mean you are 3rd in line or is it just randomly decided once it starts?

        I do like Phillips too!

I also like Ritchie... pens is a big factor there. I think Newcastle will do well and he's the main man

He's been the "main man" before, Lawro ... and , believe it or not, Shelvey is a better dead ball striker than he is. 🙂

Yeah I know... and I didn't fool for it that time 😛

I have a lot of faith in Rafa though... can't see them not doing well. Regardless of whether Shelvey is a better dead ball specialist or not - Ritchie is still on pens. He's also left footed so will get some set pieces by that virtue anyway

Loved Philips last year, but he then went a bit cold on me.

The moment WBA get close to 40 points, he is a dead duck.

    RMT please chaps:

    Foster, Myhill
    Lindelof, Trippier, Simpson (Mee, Hunemeir)
    KDB, Willian, Coutinho, JWP, (Carroll)
    Lukaku, Kane, Chicharito

£0.5 left. Should I start with Austin instead of chicharito considering fixtures/form? Is he a definite starter? What should I do with the spare money; upgrade or save?
