Mark Hughes’ Stoke City are the next team to come under the microscope in our series of pre-season analysis articles for members.

We start by assessing the performance levels at the team level to look for any trends of improvement, before checking out their standout individuals ahead of the 2017/18 season. This includes an in-depth look at their likely key attacking target for the new campaign – Joe Allen.

Although they mirrored a total of 41 goals from the 2015/16 campaign last time out, Hughes’ men were hardly prolific – only the bottom five sides found the net on fewer occasions.

The Potters’ fell from ninth spot to thirteenth over the two seasons, though as the underlying numbers highlight, their threat inside the box was on the rise.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I just looked back at my squad from GW1 last season:

    Foster
    Walker Shaw Mee
    Firmino Eriksen Redmond Ayew
    Agüero Vardy Gray

    Heaton Rangel Watson McAuley

Trying to figure out what sucked so much. Didn't spend all the budget for one and there's probably just one captaincy option.

I actually got my squad right for the first 2 GW...
That Redmond goal especially felt pretty good.
(Shaw I also had.. that was less good).

Where I screwed up was playing my WC in GW3 to get in Ibra... and then sold Walker, Snodgrass and 3 others that all scored in that week.
(Or I got snodgrass in as a counter weight.... for some obscure reason I spent 20 points over the season in transfers that somehow included Snodgrass... either in or out.... and I didn't get a single goal that he scored)

You did exactly what I did - WC GW3 to get bloody Ibra.

I started OK. Ayew injury meant I got Martial in with my 1.5 itb to try to "cover" United points which was a big error.

Can't fault it too much honestly - similar to a lot around here.

Switch Rangel to a lower % owned 4.0. When he inevitably does not play, he will be sold and lose value (quicker than a less-owned player).

I'm not totally sold on Daniels. I think Steve Cook or Aké are better shouts, from the same team.

Keep an eye on Cedric - we don't know if he'll start yet. Monitor Ritchie's performance. Can always switch to another 6.0 if one looks better.

In an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero, Cazorla has opened up about his injury hell – and it’s utterly heartbreaking.

“I have no strength in my leg. I am just two weeks out of surgery,” he said.

“I have no muscle mass in my calf, no strength in the tendon, we are still working on getting my Achilles to function again.

“Every day my son asks me if I will play again because he really wants to see me out on the pitch again and I really hope that it will happen soon.”

I haven't read anything else other than this article just now. It's Dominic King which means someone at Liverpool fed this to him. Does it make sense for Liverpool to leak stories saying they were unable to sign players? I'm not sure. My guess is that in the coming weeks we'll scare RBLby showing that we have other options, there will be a few more centre mids linked and perhaps rumours of bids will circulate, then we'll end up going back to the negotiating table with RBL. Complete speculation but I'm not giving up hope based on an article like this 😀

if Pep deploys a 3-5-2 formation over a longer period during the season, then i can see Walker and Mendy being in the top 5 fpl defenders come the end of season. I don't think Pep will change his attacking system from last season, and wing backs will largely contribute to the attacking. So i see Walker as an essential, just like Alonso. that's my opinion

I'm not so sure - I imagine only the hardcore actually played it since there was an entry fee. Wastage would surely be less severe than in the main game. Got no facts to back this up of course!

    Will boufal start over Tadic?
Not sure about their preseason performance.

Possibly but not worth the risk. Wouldn't risk Tadic either tbh

Has your view on KDB shifted at all?

I still favour Sané, but I've been unsettled by all the KDB love here.

Looks good to me. Weak 11th player, but that's the price you pay for Defoe as your 6th attacker

I'm looking at Milivojevic too. Need someone to post a for/against.

      Why Naughton though? Rotational pick?

Are there any really budget players who nobody's talking much about and who you'd actually quite like in your team and would put in without a doubt if everyone was talking about? You know, the kind of player you're convinced will probably outscore all the other players in his budget category and who would enable you to spend an extra million elsewhere? Mine's Jonathan Walters.

Rashford is really tempting me, but I may just leave him alone for the time being.

Stanislas. But may not be fit gw1, so not sure now. Just rolling with a 7m mid or Austin probably

Is Walters nailed? If so, I'm with you!
If not, I think Rashford, Okaka, Ince, Ritchie (or murphy)

How do you think Walters minutes will look? I know zero about Burnley but his minutes have been gimped for a few seasons.

He came on for last 10-15 mins. He's being eased back in. I expect tomorrows game to be more of an indicator of starting line up but I strongly think he will start the season

I do think he's nailed, why would Pep use another CB when he could use another one of his million attackers? Just tried something out, the interesting part is that it worked.

Played really well against Real. Behind Jesus and (arguably) Bernardo in the pecking order...unless Bernardo plays CM as expected
