Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

I see a question being asked quite regularly on here is that how will the signing of Matic impact Pogba. The common perception is that this will free up Pogba as an attacking option as he can play his favorite role as the #8. So I decided to do a bit of digging and came up with some evidence as to how Pogba performed in the selective number of matches that Pogba played as a #8 last season: (I have left out any matches against the other 5 of the top 6 because United's first seven fixtures are against the "lesser" sides and the matches selected are likely to be a better reflection of how Pogba is expected to perform in these favorable fixtures)

GW 11: Swansea vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 1
    Goals: 1
    Chances created: 1
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 3

GW 14: Everton vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 1
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 3
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 5

GW 16: Crystal Palace vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 3
    Goals: 1
    Chances created: 4
    Assists: 1
    Penalty area touches: 7

GW 17: WBA vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 0
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 0
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 1

GW 18: Man United vs Sunderland

    Shots inside the box: 4
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 2
    Assists: 1
    Penalty area touches: 9

GW 19: Man United vs Boro

    Shots inside the box: 4
    Goals: 1
    Chances created: 4
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 7

GW 20: West Ham vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 0
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 1
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 6

GW 23: Man United vs Hull

    Shots inside the box: 2
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 3
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 6

GW 32: Sunderland vs Man United

    Shots inside the box: 1
    Goals: 0
    Chances created: 1
    Assists: 0
    Penalty area touches: 2

TLDR: Overall Average (Pogba Home vs Pogba Away)

Shots inside the box: 1.78 per game (3.33 per game vs 1 per game)
Goals: 3 goals in 9 matches (1 home vs 2 away)
Chances created: 2.11 per game (3 per game vs 1.67 per game)
Assists: 2 assists in 9 matches (1 home vs 1 away)
Penalty area touches: 5.11 per game (7.33 per game vs 4 per game)

What this tells me is that:

    - Pogba carries significantly more goal and assist threat at home than away. Given that 4 of the first 7 favorable fixtures are at home for Man United, this bodes well for his FPL prospects. One could even argue that he is more likely improve his stats away from home given that he will have a better DM in Matic behind him this year.

    - When compared to the likes of Zaha (whole season) and Ramsey (ever since Arsenal shifted formation to 3-4-2-1), Pogba outperforms them in terms of stats and is likely to be worth the extra £1m:

    Pogba vs Ramsey vs Zaha

Shots inside the box per game: 1.78 vs 1.33 vs 1.17
Chances created per game: 2.11 vs 1.5 vs 1.08
Penalty area touches per game: 5.11 vs 3.5 vs 4.43

    - Given that Man United fans form a significant part of the FPL community, early attacking returns from their “poster boy” will inevitably lead to instant price rises.

    - Factor in the fact that Pogba is likely to hover up the baps with any attacking returns and he could be a bargain to begin with at that price.

I am on Salah too - I think the extra 1m is worth it for Salah, but depends where you use that money I suppose.

Like I said, easily downgradable to Pogba if needed.

It is interesting but as long as United play 4-2-3-1, I can't see how Pogba will improve. He is stationed in the double pivot and need to defend.
At Juventus he has Kedhira and Marchiso defending behind him so he could go forward

How do you know Mou will switch to 4-3-3, I thought Matic will replace Carrick or Fellaini.
In a 4-3-3, no place for Mikhi as a number 10 behind Lukaku

Herrera is nailed. Matic will come in for Felliani/Carrick and Pogba will be the #8. Mkhitaryan will battle it out with Rashford for the right wing.

We will play 4-2-3-1 as well at times, yes. But you would've thought Matic Herrera Pogba will start in the middle in a 4-3-3 for the most part.

I'm in doubt between Pogba and Martial. If they do switch to 4-3-3, wouldn't Herrera make for a fine cheap alternative? (all in combination with Lukaku of course). Any thoughts?

I think Pogba carries far more goal threat than Herrera personally. Martial is more explosive than Pogba but then again he could get dropped after one poor game - with Pogba you're guaranteed 90 minutes every game. 🙂

          • 8 Years

Yeah I think you're right about the 90 minutes. And Pogba will have a quick price rise if he has any return in the first weeks. I'm just worried about Mourinho's tactics of defending a lead, at which point Martial might be dangerous on the counter attack. But you're right, he doesn't seem to like Martial as much.

    Hey all.

Having a bit of a rough time of it at the moment with a nasty bit of medical news (MS) but FPL is back and I am looking to be time rich this season so back on it with a vengeance. If some of you kind folks could give my first draft the once over I would be most grateful.

    De Gea/ Coleman

    Alonso/Yoshida/Tomkins/Mee/Rangel

    Eriksen/Salah/Willian/Caroll/Loftus-Cheek

    Lukaku/Kane/Austin

Reasonably template. Gone Alonso as a heavy hitter/ auto-choice in defence but wouldn't be averse to upgrading 4th mid. Initially trying to ensure that I can fit in anyone who breaks out of the crowd. Keepers I'm just looking for security without having t second guess myself too much.

    Thanks in advance

It's not a weak defence if he's playing 343. But he is playing 433. Burnley lost Keane. Palace's defence is also a question mark since they don't have Sakho this season. Rangel may not even start. So yeah I think he has a weak defence.

Completely agree. That defence ain't good enough for a regular 4-3-3. I'd downgrade Salah to Zaha, and upgrade Tomkins + Mee to Trippier + Kolasinac/Monreal.

If you insist on going 433 I would probably drop Alonso and get the funds to improve the 3rd/4th defenders. Something like Trippier/Dawson/Bertrand/Daniels+4m or 4.5m x2. I think it would be more balanced with more potential for attacking returns.

    2. Jekori
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Looks decent at least, but some question-marks. Why are you going Coleman over Elliot? Also Tomkins isn't nailed, de Boer might play Dann and Riedewald. Or even Milivojevic when he goes 5 at the back. As mentioned Rangel probably doens't play so you only got 3 'nailed-on' defenders. Sad as it may be I also think downgrading Alonso is the way to go. Mee is fine, with Keane gone he might get some more Baps, along with Heaton of course. Definitely get Trippier and a upgrade Tomkins to David Luiz if you insist on having a Chelsea defender, or Kolasinac to have a higher ceiling. Or just take a nailed on cheaper defender and have some money itb. Also if you're not using you're 4.0 (is there any useable one?) you might want a lesser-owned one, to avoid price-drops.

I was just looking into Suttner/Dunk's CS chances. It doesn't look great. I really like Suttner's potential as a set-piece taker though!

According to my ticker, Watford are easily the worst team in the Premiership. Their away form is even worse than Burnley, who are awesome at home.

Their away form was atrocious. The worst by far.

But their home form was actually okay!

They're an odd club as I am not really sure who their rivals are.

I went to see them lose to Derby at their place and they had no decent songs at all 🙂

You need a Liverpool attacking cover.

The level of detail in the heatmaps is pretty impressive. Being able to see where chances are being created from etc.

They were checking these out at 11pm on a Saturday night. TopMarx got an early look, although he was more interested in posing for my picture 🙂

The Kompany v Kolasniac conundrum is killing me. I don't have any Arsenal, but that is tempting. However, City looks so assured at the back since Vince came back - and his goal threat is obviously there.

Which premium defender are you going for? In my eyes, only 1 can be afforded this early into the season.

    1. Ayew Holding Mee Cork

I Am! But i'm playing 4-4-2 most of the times. I have Pogba and DDG as Utd-cover. Frontline of Kane, Chicharito and Gayle. Yes that looks pants, but my defence and midfield will rack up the points. I hope. Just praying Lukaku doesn't score more than 1 goal a match and if, Pogba's involved with assists.

    Foster - Elliot
    Alonso - Trippier - Lindelof - Cedric - Hunemeier

Concerned about Cedric/Lindelof, but still want Saints/United defensive cover. Cedric to Yoshida seems easy enough, but what to do about United cover?

    1.
    DE GEA - Elliot
    AZPILICUETA - Trippier - DANIELS - Yoshida - Hunemeier

    2.

In both cases Alonso to Azpilicueta is needed to free up funds.
