We say goodbye to Gameweek 13 with Chelsea sitting atop the Premier League, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s stuttering side scoring just one goal and picking up three points from their last three games. Over the same time period, fourth-placed Man City have scored just two goals, whereas the bottom three (Birmingham, Wolves and West Ham) have managed eleven between them.

No wonder Arsene Wenger is talking up this season as the toughest yet. The Gunners sit second, just two points off the top, but Wenger has recently admitted:

“This season is by far the most open I have experienced. If you look at some teams who are in the middle of the table, the quality of the teams they have, it is quite frightening. The level has gone up and I think the physical resistance of the teams who are a bit less good technically has become stronger. All the teams in the Premier League can remain disciplined for 90 minutes.”

With only 6 points separating fifth-top from third-bottom, it’s becoming apparent that any team in the division is capable of pulling off a result, as the lines between dead-certs and no-hopers become blurred. This is a season where Man United sit three points off the top, despite winning just one game out of seven on the road. Where Arsenal sit second despite home defeats by two promoted sides already. Where Sunderland get battered 5-1 at Newcastle then sweep aside Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and where Blackpool winning at Anfield was no longer a coupon buster.

We’ve decided to analyse the OPTA stats in order to ascertain what teams are misfiring in front of goal and what teams are perhaps overachieving. With the usual Fantasy favourites becoming less dependable as the season goes on, we try to find any patterns that may offer a certain stability when it comes to team selection:

Why on earth are so many people bringing in Kolarov just before two difficult away games? It really doesn't make any logical sense.

This reminds of the time when alot of people seemed to be bringing in Coleman just before Everton played Spurs away LOL.

Idiots will be idiots I suppose.

I'm bringing him or Cahill in, few reasons:

Don't think away to Ful is that tough, they've been pants the last few games.
Lack of clean sheets anywhere, but Man City seem a good source.
      Attacking potential.
Their fixtures aren't too bad after this week.

Would say def Cahill if BOL had kept more than one CS this season...

      Cahill or Kolarov?

I wouldn't call Fulham and Stoke that difficult. Plus it's Man City and he's a defender. By the time they play 9 defensive players + Silva + Tevez, its clean sheet time!

The chances are that Man City will conceder this weekend. There is also a major doubt over Kolarov starting bearing in mind he played for Serbia last night.

Patience is the best policy with Kolarov.

Pulled the trigger anyway (heading away for the w/e); Arteta > Nani, Elmo > Kolorov. really like the look of Kolorov; facts suggest that he should be/become an FPL diamond!!!

Q an Elmo start, cleanie, assist and 2 bpts.

Nani's fixtures are better than Arteta's, there is no doubt about that, and looking few weeks ahead, are Elmo's fixtures really better than Kolarov's? Or do you have something else on your mind?

Seems to be working out for him so far.

There is more to this game than the fixture list. Considering City's setup, clean sheets on the road don't seem to be such an outrageous prospect as you're making out.

Fulham and Stoke are easy fixtures, and now that Kolarov is fully match fit, he will be a regular starter, he got me 6 points last week and I see him doing the same for the next 3 or 4 games to be honest... I don't see your hard fixtures...

Right then lads, after 3 red arrows on the spin need to figure out what to do with this shower-
    Robinson(foster)
    Cole,Simpson,konchesky(elmo,jara)
    Arteta,Adam,cesc,VDV(Barton)
    Carroll,drogba,tevez.

1 free and 0.0 in bank. If I had the funds I'd do arteta out for nani, as I don't, I don't really know who to downgrade to make the cash.

      Cole > Vidic
      Arteta > Nani

Despite assist ability Cole's returns are likely to suffer with the depletion to Chelsea's defence. Simply not worth the money at the moment. Depends how long you have had Cole to make this affordable though.

    @ Needledic...vor

Easy kimo sabi; City may be a bore, but with the way the setup, 0-0 no matter who or where they play is a strong possibility!!

Also, once he gets a run, i reckon he could be FPL gold!! 5.7m, in a tight City defence, with an eye for getting forward and cracking in a shot, i'll have smoe of that.

Admitted, its a risk at this stage, but my mini league situation is needs must!! From a betting perspective, the game at the w/e has draw written all over it.

I agree that Kolarov has potential and is definately one for the watchlist. However I just think there is no need to rush into his transfer when you consider his current situation. It doesn't hurt to wait.

Not really impressed by the Nilmar goal either. And I preferred the Messi goal (might even have been in the same match) where he ran from just inside the opposition half on the left of the pitch, starting with a block tackle to the one that made it. Not able to find a linky at work.

Remember watching that Holland game for Van Bronckhorst's goal, it was pretty awesome.

For me Matthew Burrows goal was the best, Linus Hallenius probably 2nd and Nasri 3rd.

This whole Elmander hasn't/won't score at home thing is nonsense. It is only a matter of time, he is high on confidence, and despite the fact that Bolton may indeed have a different system/tactic when playing at home, the guy is in form, odds are in favour of him scoring in the next 2 home games, for the time being, a better option than Davies in my view

Yes, that's the move I'd do. Davies will pick up bonis even if he doesn't score, he assists a lot of Elmander's goals with his headers and he's on Bolton penalty duty.

Happy days if you've got him or are going to get him in.

I'm looking to get him in for Piquionne next week. That'll give me Tevez, Davies and Carroll and, to be honest with you, barring injuries I'd be quite happy to stick with that for pretty much the rest of the season.

This waiting for Vodafone to get off their holes to sort the broadband at the new gaff is a pain, not a clue of what's going on with my side.

However sometimes ignorance is bliss - I feel like I'm crawling through a desert and finally found an oasis, but there is a dead camel in the murky waters. That dead camel is Gilks, is he truly crocked?

Originally my changes were going to be Bosingwa out Greek Scouse in, and Tevez out Rooney in for a 4 point hit. However could some kindly Bedouin inform me as to the following:
    1) Is Gilks knackered? If so that means Al-Habsi away at Man Utd unless I change
    2) With the reported injuries to Terry and Alex does that mean Bosingwa is nailed on for a while?
    3) Just how likely is Rooney to start?
    4) How did Andy Carroll do last night?*
    5) Would I be a total menk to consider Bosingwa&Tevez out for Greeky and Shrek?

    * I'm also waiting for Sky to be moved to the new gaff, I'm getting serious football withdrawals!

So, my team is linked (at least I hope the link is working).

Thinking of getting rid of Malouda for VDV, is there anyone else that might be better over the next 4 weeks. I don't want to play the fixtures all that much as it's been hard to predict but Spurs run in is fairly difficult. Maybe Cahill, Ashley Young?

Then it's either Elmo, Zhirkov or Drogba. If I swap a defender it will be for Kolarov as he seems best choice at the moment.

As for Drogba, I'll probably keep him in one more week, and then probably get Rooney in. I'll see how he plays against Wigan.

As far as I would be concerened Etuhu would be the priority transfer OUT of your team at the moment, Etuhu OUT Albrighton IN would be a nice little switch this week.

While there will be goals in the London Derby, you have stuck it out with Malouda to this point, what's another week where VDV has Arsenal away. Sometimes you need to tidy up the squad before you make these decisions, as much as you want rid of Malouda, coming up to Christmas, squad is crucial.

Next week Malouda OUT VDV IN is a good move (while everyone is writing Chelsea off in fantasy terms, me included, patience may is valuable).

Malouda OUT VDV next week, followed by Elmo OUT United defender IN the following week

Yeah I was thinking about Albrighton.

The problem with keeping Malouda is it's yet another week where I give him "just one more week". Then next week there will be something else and he just rots away in my team for a while.

Looks good to me. Would look at Drogba in the next game. He hasn't been good lately and Chelsea's fixtures are difficult in the near future.

bir new EVE tot MU ars.

Would look to downgrade Drog to Rooney (if he show some quality against wigan) and then u could use the extra cash to swap Elmo for some City defender for examle (Toure maybe?)

        3. ferdinand

in the past, but now evra is doing nothing!! and ferdinand often sits and holds on corners...

VDS/Vidic and Evra are the only way to be certain about a United defender. Rio is always on the tightrope to the next injury, so I would say Vidic for his captaincy (certain starts), his goal threat, and United at least having a regular back 4 from here on in.

On the Elmohamady issue. Has he been replaced or was he the victim of tactics against Spurs and Chelsea?

He played at home against stoke two weeks ago and got six points and played just fine. At Spurs Bruce opted for a very defensive line up that had no room for him. At Chelsea he went for two up front and more importantly went for the experience of Zenden in Elmo's usual berth against such mighty opposition.

With Everton at home I see that more like the Stoke game. Back to the tried and tested format, perhaps? I'm sure that it was zenden rather than wellbeck that replaced Elmohamady. Wellbeck could keep his place. Will Zenden?

Any thoughts? I concede that my knowledge is limited, but I think that the issue (as so many of us have him) deserves a bit more detail rather than simply "he's lost his place". Any Sunderland fans with more of an insight?

I'm playing him this week - Bruce was hailing him earlier in the season, i'm not sure it's as simple as he has just been dropped and is now second choice. Could be wrong but i'm gonna hold out a couple more weeks to be sure, and no point in doing that and not playing him in these kinda games.

Probably an error but it's not like clean sheets are easy to come by anyway, so no big loss.

I think he will be gone for the next game simply because although Chelsea were poor, Sunderland played very well without him. I don't see any reason for Bruce to change the setup. No-one will really know until the next game though unfortunately 🙂

I just think that if Zenden is his main threat and Zenden is getting on a bit and injury prone then Elmo's place may not be as precarious as people think. It's just a thought, but if people are convinced Elmo won;t play are they just as convinced that Zenden will?
I have Elmo and I ;m not part of his fan club, its just I'm weighing up the odds of starting him and him getting 1 as a sub or playing the full 60 + and potentially getting 6.

I think it is safe to say that Elmo is very clearly out of favour for the time being, Bruce will surely maintain a "if it ain't broke" mentality to his team selection, and barring injury, Elmo is in the cold. I will be shipping the Egyptian next week.

i dont think he has lost his place completely, and supposedly on the sunderland forum, many are calling for his return!

but the uncertainty has forced my hand!

Saying that i do think he will be back in the fold very soon, however his likelihood to get over 60 minutes has been severely reduced as he is now the most rotatable person on the first 11 of 2 weeks ago!

In addition the team played so well against chelsea you would have to question how clever it would be to change it!

Bruce is canny and plays the team to fit the occasion. That's something else to consider. The defensive stance - hit em on the break was great away at spurs. Similarly exploiting zenden's intelligence and Wellbeck's pace worked against chelsea, but against everton at home are the same tactics required. Perhaps a stronger midfield and one attack may be better to halt the threat of arteta's passes from deep. Not sure. It's not simple tho, that's the only thing that is for sure.

benched the wrong player the last couple of weeks. that's the curse of having 8 seemingly strong offensive players.

who would you bench this week out of:
Brunt N'Zog VdV Elmander and Carroll

    Cheers

That's why I went with 7 I play week in week out and a weak sub. That screws you up when someone gets injured 🙁

Of that lot I would actually bench Carroll.

Yes, he was the only "shining light" in an otherwise pitiful England performance last night (for the most part) but Gary Cahill is a big defender who will stick to him like glue, Bolton have the ability to be tight at the back at home, and I fancy a potential 1-0 for Bolton in this one. In circumstance where it still seems criminal to bench Drogba, due to his value, that is the only option you are left with. It sounds mad but Carroll and Elmander both have better chances of scoring this weekend compared to Drogba, but it would be a ballsy move.

In first place I got Carroll and Elmander as they rotate well. But with both of them scoring loads of points I have to bench a midfielder. No time to sort that out now.

Rooney could be a steal for the price but i'll be opting for caution where he is concerned. If he comes back anywhere near the standard he was playing at before he got injured then he's a complete waste of money.

    Repugnant tw@t too.

I have no doubts he will be a big scorer this season but how long do we wait.

I'm thinking get rid and get him back in when Chelsea are in form and have Lampard and Essien back.

Ship him out and get him back when he scores 18p like Bale. It's as easy as that 😉

If you've stuck this long, it makes sense really. I shipped him out for Nani just because of the fixtures. Malouda will score big at some point it's just when that is, and if he keeps getting outscored by far less expensive midfielders in the meantime.

      I don't think he'll start.

Chamakh is doing fine so no need to rush RVP back, he might come on but i think Wenger has said he'll be cautious with RVP this time. I'd wait until he has a start under his belt before even thinkin about it imo.
