As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

Hi everyone a newbie here, thought i better chip in with the running of this site seems i use it daily.....anyhow dont know how to link my team just yet but will read the FAQs and do it shortly.

    Team this gameweek:

    Mignolet
    Brown Huth Senderos
    Walters Dempsey Bale Sessegnon
    Rooney RVP Adebayor

    Subs: Krul Cabeye BAE Santon

My dilemma - want to take Adebayor out tonight as hes likely to drop what does everyone think to Dzeko is it a risk and will he start if Balotelli is back fit.

    Cheers

Dzeko is a risk, but only in the long term. I wouldnt do it if you intend to keep him for the rest of the season, but as a stop gap for Demba Ba it could work.

Also get an account with Gravataar.com then you can have an avataar

Im thinking Dzeko for a 1 week punt and then wait until last minute following gameweek to see line ups and either keep or swap to defoe etc if they start.

        You making any transfers?

I have my Wildcard on the go atm.

Tossing up the front three atm. Going with RVP and Graham but not sure who to pair them with. ideally have 9.5M to spend, but there is no one decent at that price. Going with Morisson atm.

Im guessing you have a strong midfield then, i really think Aguero could be one after the Spurs game - good fixtures and seems to start every game.

Yeah I could do that, but I reckon Sktrl to Kompany in a couple of weeks will be more profitable use of my man city spots.

Have had Aguero for a while, and whilst he is a great player, he is not worth the price tag in my opinion. Not whilst Dzeko and Balotelli get to lead the line ahead of him.

Hmmm ok could you not downgrade Skrtel and have a couple of weeks punt on Torres or someone until Kompany is back. I just think you need 2 big name strikers and one 'cheapie'.

Hipho - that was original as i could get im afraid i will change when i think of something better.

Fair point, Bent is looking intriguing at the moment. Villa seem to be picking up a bit, at least the stats say so. And Bent can be relyed upon to only score at home. Perfect bencher

    Team:
    Krul, Vorm
Cahill, Enrique, R Taylor, Evans, N Taylor
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon, McClean
    RVP, Aguero, Fletcher

I have 4.5mil in the bank. I've played my WC this week.
Not sure how to use my remaining cash. My team is mostly chosen. Fletcher, Sessegnon, McClean and Cahill are the only players I'm really considering switching, but to who? Too much money in the bank and nothing to do with it.

    Fletcher to Torres?
    Sessegnon to Gerrard?
McClean to Milner or Walters (and I'll still have a couple of mil left over)?
    Cahill to Richards?

Has scored as many goals as fletcher lately and got his shopping done.

Wolves have given up 5th most goals at home.

QPR (next fixture) have given up 5th most goals at home.

    He is on Pens.

Is it that Flethcer is in a bit better form and chepaer, so easier to bench with everyone stacking thier front 8 with non-benchables.

Will WC at last possible time frame.

Just looking at the top Value/Season players

If, before week 1, you had picked and played this team(squad) every week (ignoring 3 from any team limits).....

    Vorm - (Krul)
    Raylor - BAE - Williams - (Simpson) - (Naylor)
    Sinclair - Walters - Sessegnon - Dyer - (Pilkington)
    Ba (c) - Graham - Morrison

Then you would have scored 1125 to date, not even taking auto subs or captain changes into account

And the total cost of that team was just £74.5m at the start of the season. Just goes to show spending every penny isnt the be all and end all

Very good team. But obviously get rid of Kompany (and get Richards).
      Do Rooney to Aguero.
      And get rid of Ade.
You might even be able to keep Roo Roo by switching Ade to Aguero and Kompany to a cheaper defender (or you'll be close at least).

Midfielders and forwards score more pts than defenders right? So why aren't people having ultra cheap defences (4.1 per player) and beefing up their midfield/attack? Every team seems to have at least one 6m or higher defender.

    e.g.
    Vorm | Krul
    Evans Caulker Kelly Shotton Turner
    Nani Silva Bale Dempsey Sess
    Fletch RVP Aguero

    Is this sound reasoning?

Because in the best defences, City, United, Liverpool the players cost 6m+

Sometimes, those midfielders will give you 2 points or even 0 due to rotation.
Then, the chance of a Kompany clean sheet can comfort you.

Mainly due to having to bench one of the front 8. Therefore most have Dyer/Moses/McClean as a fifth mid and have 1 or 2 5.5m+ defenders.

Defenders probably get more points per pound than midfielders or attackers.
Even the most expensive defender, Terry at 7.5, has gotten 91 points this season. Only Walters, Vorm, Friedel and Ba have scored higher for his cost (or cheaper).
You're not going to find many mids or attackers scoring 90 points at a value of 5-6mil (eg. R Taylor, BAE).

It's true regarding mids etc scoring more, but this game is about balance.
1/2 top defenders will score you pts on the weeks your mids might let you down.

Example...Krul and Raylor saved me last week from a below average week. It's worth splashing some cash at the back, then rotating mids thru transfers depending on fixtures and form

Who would people bench out of this lot.

    Lindegaard - Sorenson

    Richards - Evans - Santon - Senderos - Shotton

    Bale - Silva - Gerrard - Valencia - Dempsey

Van Persie - Sturridge - Cox ------ Cox will change this week to a 1 or 2 week punt, also any suggestions who that punt could be 1.1 mil in the bank, Cheers

Thanks with the 1.1 in the bank i have left the door open with 2 free transfers to go Gerrard and Cox to Aguerro and Sigurdson/Mclean if it looks sensible around gw 25, cox will change to whoever suits each week until then, thank to Granville and his Fantasy Island risk, i was debating between Morrison/Best/Graham before i listened to podcast obviously all 3 scored

Can't see any cheap strikers who I'd really fancy for this week. Maybe Graham or Hoillet? I think I'd play the other 7 and bench Cox instead.

      McLean and Richards.

McLean is perfect bench fodder who you can also play. Walters is a great option but his stats don't make for great reading regarding shots on goal.

Richards is a beast and machine if fit. Vermaelen could be inspired, though.

    Another RTM WC team, sorry.

    Krul / Mignolet
    Enrique, Santon, Senderos, Shotton, Clark
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Walters, McClean
    Rooney, RVP, Sturridge (or Fletcher?)

    0,3M in Bank.

Planning Enrique -> Richards for GW 24, Rooney -> Aguero for GW 26, and Sturridge -> Ba when Ba is back. Any good?

    Sess or Walters this week?
Also, Torres or Aguero (1 week only)? My gut says this will be Torres' week but can't ignore that all of Aguero's goals come in Manchester or London and he's due a goal.

Poll: Who bought, and has kept, a player for a price now unrecognisable from their current value in the game? Thereby saving themselves a fortune when that player later becomes an essential pick? Il start the ball rolling, i bought sturridge for 6.5 (now 7.4), Ba for 6.3 (7.6 before ACON) but probably my best acquisition has been Bale at 7.9 (now 9.5). Early Ryan Taylor owners will no doubt be in the running here....
