As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

It'd be ridiculous if true. He's our leading goalscorer but those quotes have got everyone thinking. But it may just boil down to misinterpretation of AVB's thoughts.

Wait for the press conf. on Friday.

And the pre-deadline price rise tomorrow!

He's most likely fit (enough). If there are any problems, it's prob due to attitude with AVB -tough love and all that.

Personally I'm sticking for now - The next 6 weeks require a fully stocked bench imo. Then it's back to cheapies + big men GW28-32.

If I was looking to have a cheapo striker for the whole season, I would definitely be looking at Graham. But I plan to get Ba or Cisse as soon as they come back and play him most games, so i'm just looking at the best options up until then. Getting best allows me to upgrade shotton and senderos to huth and haangerland/riise. I would downgrade Sessegnon in a few games time to finance the Best - Ba switch.

The only problem I can see is that attacking players aren't as affected by home /away.

      Wks 25, 28, 31 could be tricky...

I toyed with HBA / McClean, but I'd be loath to sacrifice that juicy 3rd striker spot.

First Post so hello to all. Need some advice in my mini league I am 40 points off top spot.
Do I save this weeks transfer and do 2 next week and then wildcard week 24. The wildcard is really doing my head in.

    Vorm Ruddy
Enrique Jones Richards Simpson - Shotton
    Bale – Walters – Nani – Dempsey - Ferguson
    RVP – Sturridge – Aguero

    Team value £107.5m
£0.7m in bank want 1 transfer to use this week.

Hi Maxmania - I think you could hang on until gw24.

Most pressing transfer imo is Jones. You could double up on MC defenders! Perhaps not this week.

You also seem to have a Ferguson Situation - maybe try out an upgrade before gw24 - McClean, Dyer etc.

This will also help if sturridge doesn't play.

Thanks for the help. I was already looking at the McClean route for the long run.
Who do you think over the course of the final run of games will end up with more points?
        McClean or Dyer.

Depends on how many more starts McClean gets. eg: Tony Pulis loves nothing better than giving an exciting prospect 6 games in the first team - then BANG, he's gone.

At this stage, I'd say Dyer was the safer bet but McClean has 2 home fixtures and he'll almost certainly play more than Ferguson 😉

            Walters Bale /McClean Dempsey Nani
            VP Aguero Sturridge

            Ruddy Jones Simpson

Aguero VP or Nani to get arm band.
Really want to do Sturridge but him playing situation.

Morning all, looking for a quick show of hands on the below... a), b) or c) ?? (bearing in mind I am wildcarding for the GW24 games)...

    a) Adebayor -> Sturridge this week, play 3-4-3 and then either Ramsey -> Lennon or Westwood -> Friedel in GW23)

    b) Reo-Coker -> Mclean this week, play 3-5-2 and then do Westwood -> Mignolet in GW23

    c) Westwood -> Mignolet this week, keeping 4-4-2, and then do Reo-Coker -> Mclean in GW23

    Ruddy
    BAE, JEvans, Simpson, Wilkinson
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Ramsey
    RVP, Rooney

    Westwood, Caulker, Reo-Coker, Adebayor

I think it makes sense to make the transfer in attacking slots, because that's where the points tend to come from... Although I'd wait on AVB's press conference before bringing Sturridge in, The Times are running with a story tomorrow about further disagreements between Sturridge and AVB.

Eeeek, cheers for that. Despite Ade's likely fall and Sturridge's likely rise in price, I can still afford the proposed GW23 transfers so it's probably better to wait till Sat morning I guess.

Here i was set to bring Bent for a 2 week punt to play F with RVP and Sturridge. Then I read that Rooney has scored more goals vs Arsenal than any other United player in their history.

Now I am thinking of Rooney for 2 weeks then Aguero!!

Surely Rooney (C) this week??? Or shalll I stick with Bent punt?

40 Pts ahead in Mini League! 2PT lead in Head to Head League with 2 Dead teams to play!

    migolet (krul)
richards, cahill, j. evans, kelly, simpson
    sess, richards, silva, valencia, mclean
    RVP, aguero, sturridge.

    0.4m in bank
play 3-4-3 most weeks- rotate mclean kelly simpson j.evans

any obvious improvements. keepers dont rotate that well, but couldnt see any obvious other pairing.

unless you want to keep the .4 for a planned transfer down the road, you have the luxury to bring in senderos instead of kelly. talked to a fulham fan earlier, said he wouldnt be surprised if Jol reverted back to Baird in that spot some time in the near future. while evans is a nice value, i just dont see alot of weeks where I'd use him when i planned my WC.

Morning Ryan, what's your opinion on this? (bearing in mind I am wildcarding for the GW24 games)…

    a) Adebayor -> Sturridge this week, play 3-4-3 and then either Ramsey -> Lennon or Westwood -> Friedel in GW23)

    b) Reo-Coker -> Mclean this week, play 3-5-2 and then do Westwood -> Mignolet in GW23

    Ruddy
    BAE, JEvans, Simpson, Wilkinson
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Ramsey
    RVP, Rooney

    Westwood, Caulker, Reo-Coker, Adebayor

I currently have Mata & Sturridge in my WC team. With the uncertainty around Studge I am doing what i'd said i'd never do again...... Torres in until sturridge situation resolved. Would leave me with Torres & Sess in place of Mata & Studge. AM I LOSING IT?

i am being put off by any chelsea attack atm with these sturridge rumours, i call them rumours because i havent actually read anything. if anyone can provide a link to a story, much obliged.
sturridge is the only one that represents value for his price. Torres COULD score a brace, but is anyone shocked if he didnt? Id rather have Sess +3 million than Mata anyday. Ramires might be worth a cheeky punt.

I have silva for sure, and kompany for sure....the question is between Ricahards and Aguero in that second set. Will Richards/Rooney outscore aguero/random cheapo defender over the course of their awesome fixtures? I think its very possible.

You're REALLY down on united attack, huh? I have considered going united free, but its a bit scary.

i have valencia in atm. wishing i didnt drop nani now with sturridge news. could have downgraded sturr to morison and kept nani vs valencia. I probably did the perfectly wrong thing, getting one united attacker, and getting the wrong one. 🙁

i just think the masses always carry utd, and this is a chunk of the season where fixtures make me think i can climb the rankings without much of them. I do have lindegaard as well 🙂

one week scholes is scoring? Carrick? Berbatov? Its not like paying out the wazoo for rvp, where you know a high percentage of scoring goes through him. at utd right now, the scoring seems to come from anywhere. I only see one thing consistent, valencia is whipping the crosses in and setting up alot of goals.

I'm giving it a whole lot of thought, Christina. I just don't see Aguero going nuts, and I'm seeing a good amount of money left to use for Richards/Kompany back there. throw in that those two are decenet goal/assist threats themselves, and if you believe, like me that City will get a whole lot of cleanies, then it seems viable to me. I haven't decided fully, mostly because of my (perhaps irrational) fear of Aguero coming good, but we shall see. I think a lot hinges on deciding how Rooney will fire from now on.

wildcards are fun, but they will drive you nuts.

I'm down my number 2 striker because Adebayor sits. I swapped out Ba for Graham for duration of ACN, leaving me with RVP and Graham up top. In meantime I took Ba money and loaded my midfield and currently have Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Sess/Sinclair.

    Thoughts on:
    A) Vorm
    Shawcross-JoseEnrique-Terry
    Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Sess/Sinclair
    RVP-Graham

    B Vorm
    Shawcross-JoseEnrique-Terry-BAE
    Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Sess/Sinclair
    RVP

Essentially, Ade and Shotton on bench, plus then bench either BAE or Graham?

so you arent on WC i assume? I wouldnt have gone for graham if you already have sinclair. perhaps my thinking isnt valid after their showing against arsenal, but even with a kind run of fixtures, doubling up on swansea attack is a massive gamble, and their fixtures are far from kind. what happens when you look at sinclair's fixture, say to yourself, "Id rather bench him, lets see......i will put in another swan". doesnt really help you.

I did Graham last week when dropped Ba, essentially for money to bolster midfield in Ba absence. Oversight on my part that Ade would be sitting this week. I am on WC this week, so could move some others around as well. Still have 1.1 to spare. (should have included that info.. whoops, newbie error)

Can afford Walters, but was a bit worried that out of his last 8 GW, he has topped 3 points only twice, and once was against Wigan. Wondered if he was losing steam a bit. Walters and Sinclair are both on pens, which I liked, but I concede Stoke has nicer run coming up (I think). Can't afford Valencia.

    Morning fuzzy

I hope that you are right with your above list of WC necessities, because my current draft ticks most of the boxes.

    Schwarzer, Sorenson
    Richards, Kompany, Raylor, Shawcross, Senderos
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon, McClean
    RVP, Torres, Best

I plan to rotate Best and McClean. A couple of tweeks will turn Best into Ba when he returns. McClean will be straight out for Moses as soon as his form dips.

    Thoughts anyone?

No comments needed on the Torres punt. I know all of the reasons not to get him. But i've got a funny feeling. And i'm chasing big style in my mini league.
