West Brom cause early panic, but Arsenal ride the storm as Alexandre Lacazette becomes the latest premium striker to catch the eye in Gameweek 6.

Here are the notes from Monday night’s fixture.

Lacazette stakes his claim

In a Gameweek awash with goals from big-name forwards, it was perhaps predictable that Alexandre Lacazette would have his say.

The Frenchman headed home a first-half opener after Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick struck the bar and followed that up with a second-half penalty.

That confirmed what we already knew – Lacazette will monopolise spot-kicks and deny Sanchez that avenue for points.

Arsene Wenger offered more on this post-match.

“Yeah, until now I gave it to him. I observed him a little bit because we work as well on penalties in training. And I think he took his penalty well tonight”

The brace took Lacazette to four goals for the season – all scored in home matches.

That’s significant, given that he failed to start at Liverpool and was withdrawn on 65 minutes at Chelsea and after 78 minutes at Liverpool. He clearly has to earn more pitch-time and produce points away from home before we can elevate him in our pecking order.

However, those spot-kicks could be significant. Notably, Alvaro Morata is currently the top transfer target up front, despite the fact that he is expected to give way to Eden Hazard as Chelsea’s penalty taker.

As for Sanchez, he showed glimpses and nice touches in a support role on the left, but never made penetrating runs that threatened to hurt West Brom. He enjoyed just two touches in the penalty area, with all four of his efforts arriving from range.

Sanchez will certainly need to show more if we are to consider investment. With the big-hitting forwards so prominent, he needs a big return to change the current landscape.

Aaron Ramsey – deployed on the right of Lacazette – was arguably the more impressive midfield option on show. He earned the assist for the penalty and was more prominent in the Baggies penalty area.

Gunners escape with shut-out

The Arsenal defence was stretched at times by a notoriously limited West Brom attack.

The Baggies could, and should, have benefited from at least one first-half goal; Jay Rodriguez was particularly unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty.

But Arsene Wenger’s defence held on to earn a third successive clean sheet, with the highly impressive Nacho Monreal fetching bonus points for a third straight match.

His Bonus Points System (BPS) score of 33 won him two bonus points and continued his superb season for Baseline BPS.

With Brighton and Swansea City next at the Emirates, further returns would seem likely for the Spaniard and his defensive team-mates.

Baggies empty-handed

West Brom suffered another defeat at the Emirates, despite those best efforts in the first half.

Tony Pulis retained the 3-5-2 formation he trialled in the cup against Man City last week, with Kieran Gibbs and Allan Nyom utilised as wing-backs.

The Baggies boss chose to drop Matt Phillips to the bench, and with Chris Brunt also kept in reserve, their best two deliverers of a set-piece were absent for much of the match.

That left Gibbs and Jake Livermore on dead-balls and they set up just a single attempt from a set-play situation.

Despite our expectations, and last year’s stats, Ahmed Hegazi’s Gameweek 1 goal is West Brom’s only strike from a set-piece all season.

Hegazi’s 1.4 million owners will now be hoping that Pulis retains a three-man defence for the visit of Watford in Gameweek 7, or that their man can retain his start even in a back four. Neither looks certain.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Conte doesnt have propper sub in his position. The game was won, so Alonso was rested as soon as possible.

Wing backs are very attractive from fpl perspective, but they are also the ones who needs rest the most.

2FT's, wildcard in hand, but as a non-Lukaku owner I'm a little nervous ahead of GW7. I'm 0.4m short of upgrading Jesus, so Alli>Silva make sense?

Might then do Lukaku>Aguero next week, for the double-up vs Stoke, whilst Lukaku plays Liverpool. Keeping things fluid...

    Need some inspiration.

    -Foster
    -Kola-Davies-Stones
    -Eriksen-Mhki-Salah-Atsu-TCarroll
    -Aguero-Lukaku

    /Elliot/Lascelles/Mounie/Long

    1FT 0.9m ITB

What to do? Thinking of WCing soong so I can sort my forward line and bench, but was thinking purely on a one game perspective of going Lascelles > Jones? Had originally planned to bring Kane in this week but seems a bit of a lottery at the moment with everyone scoring. Will obviously wait to make any transfers, but just curious on thoughts.

Now that it does look like Aguero is in insane form delivering scintillating scores, is it wise to just get him in now? Even at the expense of a hit?

The rule of FPL in the past has always been if Aguero is banging them in, get him in.

    1. MTPockets
        8 years, 2 months ago

His overall & comparison stats are good, particularly with distribution and assist potential this season. But don't think I'd take a hit for it personally (although I have him).

Depends who else you already have? The fact of the matter is that although Aguero is in top form, so are Kane, Lukaku, Morata (and Lacazette to a lesser degree), so I wouldn't be looking to remove them.

He's a great option for sure; who would you take out for him? I succumbed to the hype last week and sold Morata to get him for a hit - so perhaps I'm a bit biased!

The thing is, in the past he was pretty much guaranteed to play when fit. Not quite the same now. Also, right now there seem to be other options in that position that are as good to have; Morata, for example, looks to be a good player with no real competition playing for a good side who will score plenty of goals. Kane and Lukaku too - very unlikely to be dropped or rested. So perhaps the rule isn't quite as right as it used to be.

The article is wrong by the way. Monreal got 1 bonus point.

No idea why, his pass completion rate must have been close to 100%, he put so many vital interceptions in, made a game saving clearance off the line and was clearly the stand out player on the pitch. His 2 bonus points were downgraded to 1 at the end which to me makes no sense.

I still don't fully get / agree with the BAPS system.

Stat based. It's so stupid. Just pick the best three players subjectively like they used to. I missed the game but heard he was clear motm so should have got 3.

Should have got 3 when Lacazette scored 2? Strikers only get bonus points when they score so it'd be quite ludicrous for a defender with just the CS to get bonus points over a striker who scored 2.

He could maybe get 8 but Bellerin had quite a good game as well and produced more offensively.

      Is losing Alonso too drastic?
Have 2ft and could do Alonso to Jones this week and Firmino to Morata the week after?
I remember Alonso last year and know he is always in opponents half + Jones fixtures are getting tougher so
      A) Do it!
      B) Rather just get Vardy for Firmino and keep Alonso. Morata might just sneak in for Lukaku if feels like it soon.

Is it insane to go without Kane? And Kaku?
Thinking of Morata, Kun and Vardy.

I would, and do, feel a lot more comfortable owning one of the two.

Morata, Kun, Kaku? I have the latter two plus Eriksen. Need to add a Pool mid to have an attacker each from big 5.

That sounds better, but I guess it depends whether you're thinking about the long or short term. Short term I'd prefer Vardy to Morata; I'm aiming for two of Aguero/Kane/Lukaku and Vardy.

Forget about Liverpool and focus on the Big 4

Salah is the second highest scoring midfielder.
Coutinho got double digits in his second game.
Mane was averaging a goal a game before he got sent off.

One cannot simply forget about them.

      Elliot (Krul)
      Jones, Davies, Kola, Naughton (Gamez)
      Sanchez, Mkhi, Atsu (RLC, Carroll)
      Aguero, Kane, Firmino

      1FT 0.1 ITB, Wildcard played.

Anything need doing here or is it definitely a save FT for the International break?

If wildcarding Gw 8 I should do it straight after deadline this week right?
Then try and get on as many bandwagons as possible hope for a couple of double risers and increase team value? Or does that not work?
Also just checking if I get rid of a player who risen once I lose the 0.1?

      Thanks

If the players you want in final squad are rising in price, pick them first

      My current team:

      Fabianski (Elliot)
Otamendi - Kola - Bavies - Jones (Mbemba)
DavidSilva - Alli - Davis (Obiang - Gross)
      Kaku - Kane - Firmino

      Thinking of doing:

Firmino, Alli, Davis => Morata, Coutinho, 4.6 DEF

Thoughts on that trade? Or should I focus on other assets?

      Any help would be appreciated

      Hi all

I think one of the hardest things for a fantasy football manager to do (other than selecting the best captain option) is holding on to that week's transfer to give you 2 FT's the following week.

I have been guilty in the past many times of not being disciplined enough to hold it. The excitement of a gamble, and instinctive transfer is sometimes too much to ignore.

But I am starting to pre-plan a few week's in advance. A spreadsheet based on 2 FT's for the next couple of GWs, the players who can come in, and go out of my squad. The name "mini wildcard" is thrown about on here often and it's a great option.

Many may do this already, using the watch-list facility. But I am pretty sure many don't.

My advice is find that discipline before rushing into that gut instinctive transfer. And if next week, you could make 2 transfers which would make a better impact.

      Over and out
      Dan
