A West Ham pair catch the eye despite playing thousands of miles apart, a Crystal Palace player actually scores a goal – in vain, fittingly enough – and results set up a massive Monday night for many Premier League assets.

Here are the notes from a dramatic Friday night of World Cup qualifying action.

Hammers duo in the spotlight

West Ham players were to the fore on two continents in Friday’s World Cup qualifiers.

Striker Javier Hernandez scored in Mexico’s 3-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago, while his club team-mate Marko Arnautovic was on target as Austria beat Serbia in a 3-2 thriller.

The midfielder recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes for Austria, who did a huge favour to both Wales and the Republic of Ireland by beating the Group D leaders.

Serbia’s goals came from Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic – only the second Eagle to score all season – and Man United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic and Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic also played the full 90 minutes for the Serbs, who will now have to beat Georgia at home on Monday to guarantee automatic qualification for next year’s finals in Russia.

The form of both Hernandez and Arnautovic could be welcome news for Fantasy managers looking to tap into Hammers assets.

Slaven Bilic’s side, who have won two and drawn one of their last four matches, have a good run of fixtures through to Gameweek 14, with only a visit from Liverpool representing a major test.

Hernandez (19.3%) is the fifth most popular Fantasy Premier League striker, and he has now scored twice in his last three matches for club and country.

Monday night showdown looms

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey provided the assist for Wales’ winning goal in Georgia.

Chris Coleman’s side was packed with Premier League players, including Ashley Williams, Ben Davies, Andy King, Joe Allen, Sam Vokes and Wayne Hennessey. Hal Robson-Kanu and Ben Woodburn were handed late minutes from the bench.

The Welsh now face a winner-takes-all match at home to the Republic of Ireland on Monday.

Martin O’Neill’s side beat Moldova 2-0, with assists coming from Brighton’s Shane Duffy and Burnley defender Stephen Ward – that’s back-to-back assists for the Clarets full-back now.

Newcastle’s Ciaran Clark, Duffy and Ward all started and finished the match for the Irish, while Southampton striker Shane Long played 83 minutes and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter recovered from an Achilles injury to play the final 11 minutes.

The victory means that any one of Wales, Ireland and Serbia can still win Group D, with a play-off place for finishing second also up for grabs.

Draws for Serbia and Wales would secure them first and second place respectively.

Elsewhere…

Defenders Matteo Darmian (Man United) and Davide Zappacosta (Chelsea) played the full 90 minutes as Italy were held to a shock 1-1 draw at home by Macedonia.

Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini was an unused sub for the Italians, who now face a play-off to make it to Russia next year after Spain won Group G with a 3-0 win over Albania.

David de Gea played the full match and David Silva 74 minutes, while Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro and Nacho Monreal watched on from the bench.

Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson put in a full shift as Iceland edged closer to a first ever World Cup finals with a 3-0 win in Turkey achieved with just 25% possession.

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson played 82 minutes.

Ivory Coast duo Eric Bailly and Serge Aurier started and finished a goalless draw with Mali. Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony shook off a hamstring issue to travel with the squad, but didn’t even make the bench.

Brighton striker Tomer Hemed, currently serving a three-match domestic ban, played the full 90 minutes as Israel won 1-0 in Liechtenstein, while the man he was cited for stamping on, Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin, started for the USA in a 4-0 victory over Panama.

Stoke City defender Geoff Cameron was an unused sub as the Americans closed in on qualification for Russia 2018.

Burnley striker Chris Wood kept up his fine form with a goal for New Zealand in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Japan. Southampton centre-half Maya Yoshida played the full match for the hosts.

England’s U21 side beat their Scottish counterparts 3-1 in Euro U21 qualifying. Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham converted a penalty and Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke was also on the scoresheet.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Baseline bonus XI

A little while on the Scoutcast I showcased a baseline bonus squad – made up of those who are excelling in FPL’s BPS system – when goals, assists and clean sheets are taken away.

With the international break still trundling along I thought now would be a good time to revisit this.

This covers the last four Gameweeks with a minimum of three starts needed to make the list. It is sorted by minutes per baseline bonus.

    Mignolet Fabianski
    Azpilicueta Jones Schindler Rudiger Keane
    Coutinho Kante Fabregas Mooy Merino
    Rashford J.Ayew Diouf

What emerges is an intriguing mix of players from top teams plus some interesting enablers. In addition, there are some Fantasy duds tht may be best avoided.

    Goalkeepers

Mignolet and Fabianski are excelling in bonus recoveries. Of the pair Fabianski looks the better option. He’s cheaper plus has also racked up bonus for clean sheets. Special mention also goes to Pope, who is matching this pair for recoveries and also benefitting from clean sheets. The Burnley man is a strong option.

    Defence

Azpiliceuta is the second best player in terms of minutes per baseline bonus over the last four, which comes ahead of a strong set of fixtures for Chelsea. If Chelsea earn a clean sheet the Spaniard should do well for bonus returns.

Rotation may see Rudiger discounted, and poor fixtures see Schindler overlooked. Jones also has poor fixtures but if you have him perhaps keep – should Mourinho bring his bus to the top sides Jones should prosper. Everton’s form makes Keane tricky to pick right now – one to monitor

    Midfield

Coutinho is the star here. No one can come close to his baseline bonus returns. He racks up one every four minutes putting him in a class of his own, with Azpilicueta the next best at 4.3.

Fabregas is also worth considering given his assist potential. Could be an interesting cheaper pick for those who favour ‘coverage’ for Chelsea’s run.

Kante, Mooy and Merino are what they are – overall poor Fantasy picks, but worth noting their bonus potential.

    Forwards

The best forward is Rashford, although with a rate of baseline bonus accumulation at more than double Coutinho’s it shows how badly strikers fare in baseline bonus.

In Gameweek 12 when Manchester United’s fixtures turn he could be an interesting differential though.

Diouf and J Ayew both play in teams with strong fixtures. Overall I wouldn’t recommend them as in Ayew’s case in particular Fabianski and Fernandez offer far more bonus potential. In Diouf’s case the Stoke backline is also stronger for bonus – Zouma and Butland in particular.

Which, if any of the above appeal to you? Are there any surprises for you?

            Already have done!

But may shift for sterling by the end - just feel gwk 10 is Coutinho time - also frees up vital 1m for defence

WC midfield currently Sane Sterling Coutinho with Jesus Vardy Kane upfront.

This is assuming Aguero is out for another few weeks.

Triple city a calculated risk (short term) but hopefully pays off. Even if any city lads get rotated I hope the others will more than make up for it.

Nice stuff. Surprised to see Fabregas there & I bought Rashford gw6 and I'm really happy with him in my team.. I expect Utd to move to a more counter attacking style with their fixtures, this could play into Rashford hands nicely.

Great post. Baseline BPS and fixtures mean all roads lead to Azpilicueta, frustrating though as very hard to get him in my team with current structure. 99% sure will get him when I wildcard in the near future.

Still think England have a team that can get to the QFs of the World Cup. Just wish we would play more like Spurs given Poch's influence on the squad (and that includes players he worked with at Southampton such as Lallana). The defence is the bit that needs most work IMO:

    Hart
    Jones - Cahill - Stones
    Walker - Dier - Henderson - Rose
    Lallana - Alli
    Kane

6 of the front 7 worked with Poch at some stage. It is stupid that we don't ask him for pointers about how to play Spurs' style and get the best out of those players. The real issue is the back 3 and GK. I like players such as Maguire, Keane, Gibson, but it is too late to get them in the squad now.

Chalobah isn't afraid to express himself. And that's way more than what Henderson, Drinkwater etc can offer. Realistically, England will be coming home early..again.

Kane aside, nobody starts for any top nation.

I think we need two CMs who protect the defence. That is why I like Henderson and Dier. I would even consider Drinkwater over Henderson. But we need to keep things tight - you don't win tournaments leaking goals.

It is not about how many world class players you have. It is about working as a team. That is where we fall down. Look at some of the teams that have won tournaments such as Greece and Portugal - they have crap players, but they work together as a team.

I'd say Portugal have better technical players hence they can keep possession, In the UK youngsters were trained to hoof the ball up field or pass to the biggest kid who would steam through and smash it into full size nets that no kid could save, different culture in both Greece/Portugal

That's not true. Why have we done so well at U21, U20 and U17 level then? One of the issues is UK youngsters not leaving the country to play football. The other is a lack of building a team at senior level. It has been this way for years - we put together a group of individuals and expect them to play well.

Hart??? Ten english goalkeepers in front of him atm....

      Maguire instead of Cahill

Lacks creativity in midfield and by that i mean Lalla and Alli, one of them should be more creative or it won´t work. Lalla is as good as it gets but he isn´t creative enough in that set up. You need a Eriksen, Hazard kind to make it work. Maybe if you put Barkley (yes i know) in the middle of park with Dier, perhaps?

Compared to the other teams of significans they still lacks a lot.

    Fabianski - (elliot)
    Azpi,Stones,Jones,Davies,Ward
    Silva,Eriksen - (choupo,fellaini,king)
    Kane,Vardy,Jesus

    Thoughts:
    > Formations options aplenty
    > Save FT GW11 to get Lukaku GW12 using cash cows
    > Great Fixtures for next 6-10GWs

    It's Saturday, noon.
The following players are steadily going up and have risen once already.

    Kane Spurs F A 37.9 £12.7m 1 24987 75.3
    Jesus Man City F A 14.5 £10.5m 1 52774 47.7
    Ward Burnley D A 7.8 £4.6m 1 66765 33.9
    Doucouré Watford M A 12.1 £5.3m 1 80755 20.0
    Davies Spurs D A 23.8 £5.9m 1 83275 17.5
    David Silva Man City M A 23.5 £8.5m 1 92120 8.8

I wonder what kind of weird peer pressure has led this site to back the idea that we should not expect double risers in the international break.
Son Alli Kane Wait (who came up with the idea first) got numerous likes and had their post highlighted. In a recent article Jonty basically endorsed it.

What on earth is going on?

    1. MTPockets
        8 years, 2 months ago

Haven't seen the post, but probably meant relative to previous years. Then have to factor in that there are many wildcards, and issues like Aguero/Morata change the calculus.

I agree rises seem to be fewer. But the truth is: this might depend on the active players and we don't know how the algorithm exactly looks like (which is fun!).
All I'm saying is that discouraging WC *because* there won't be double risers is not a good argument, for a number of reasons.

Your link states this isyour first season, might not be the case of course. Same probably applies to your account on this site.

A few years back the prices changed much more rapidly, it was easy to make good money on a wc. That has changed.

There is very little activity at the moment. There hasn't been a single price rise in the last 3 days. Activity will presumably increase towards the weekend but maybe not sufficiently enough for many of those you mention to rise a second time. Other than Kane they're all 50k off and more. Wildcards dont count towards the rise, but may be reported as NTI. Those not on a WC might be more concerned about replacing Morata/Ageuro than updating their midfield or defense, so that might help Kane and Jesus, but most likely you'd be keeping them anyway, as for the others I brought them all in on my WC, but not expecting to get a return from them.

Doesn't matter how much you try, Richarlison, RLC, Carroll, Gross, Atsu, Ritchie can't take the place of a good premium midfielder. Am I wrong?

Currently have Erik Haz and Sterling on WC, but only Kane Jesus up front...team balance is extremely tricky - there are so many team CS'ing for fun ATM, strong defensive cover is looking more important than half decent 8m Fwds and Mids.

How about Eriksen and Cou? Eriksen in season keeper and Cou is bonus magnet.

Chelsea's fixtures are too good to miss out on, although I have had Eriksen since the start and he's been pretty consistent, his fixtures are poor (LIV, mnu, ars) in next 5 argh

I should be busy, but I'm procrastinating. How's uni for you?
