Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but it’s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season – and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

  5. Comparing defenders, midfielders and forwards
    Spartac Mac
    • 9 Years
    8 years, 9 days ago

Just comparing how the top 10 defenders, midfielders and forwards have performed after 15 GW's.

    Top 10 defenders:

    Average price: 6.07m
    Average PPG: 4.58ppg
Total number of double-digit hauls (10 or more points): 14
Total number of 8+ point hauls: 28

    Top 10 midfielders:

    Average price: 8.2m
    Average PPG: 5.5ppg
Total number of double-digit hauls: 29
Total number of 8+ point hauls: 43

    Top 10 forwards:
    Average price: 9.92m
    Average PPG: 4.7ppg
Total number of double-digit hauls: 19
Total number of 8+ point hauls: 37

So as we approach the half-way point of the season, the top 10 forwards are only averaging .12 more points per game than the top 10 defenders.

Midfielders have scored 10 more double-digit hauls than strikers too, costing 1.7m less on average than forwards.

Is the time of big-hitting forwards declining and instead switching to packing (and captaining) midfielders from here on in?

Yes and has been for like 4 GWs

    2. wbm

      8 years, 9 days ago

That is never going to be a fair comparison given the fact that there's so much fewer forwards.
There's a smaller selection that has a chance to reach the top, and there's fewer slots in our teams.

You might be choosing among the top 10 midfielders to bring into your team.
But you're not choosing among 10 forwards.

If you instead pick the top ~6 or so forwards you get a more fair comparison in my opinion.
The mids are still ahead, but not by as much.

      1. Spartac Mac
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 9 days ago

Fair comment, I think (for me personally) I just wanted to see if there was better value in midfield after always pumping for big attackers and the usual safety in captaincy, which has seemed to have shifted to safer midfielders.

Just looked at how the top 6 mids & forwards fare.

        Top 6 mids after 15 GW's:

        Average price: 8.3m
        Average PPG: 5.9ppg
        Double-digit hauls: 21

        Top 6 forwards after 15 GW's:

        Average price: 10.9m
        Average PPG: 5.1ppg
        Double-digit hauls:14

Mids still sweep it across the board.

        1. wbm
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 9 days ago

          I don't think that's a fair comparison either.
I think you need to compare the top 10 mids with the top ~6 forwards.

Even then the mids are still ahead, so I think your conclusion is correct.
The mids are both better value and are returning more points.

Then we have another thing to consider if you want to go big in midfield and want the 5 in form mids.
That means getting lowering your budget elsewhere.
The forwards have quite shitty budget friendly alternatives, and they seem to change every other week.
So then it might a better idea to only go for 1 or 2 forwards.
But then you have another problem, your bench.
The good thing with having 3 at the back is that you have cheap options to rotate and that can come in when injury or rotation strikes your starting 11.

In conclusion, yes mids are currently best for both total points and value.
And it's definitely worth it to consider captaining them more often if you don't already.
But there's also very good value players in midfield, and loading up on too many heavy hitters in mid gives you structural problems.

Great comment by the way, I'm not trying to shoot you down, just trying to add some extra insight.

True. We can only include 3 forwards, 5 midfielders, 5 defenders and 2 goalkeepers in our squads, so the other players in the top tens are less relevant, except that there are far more candidate midfielders than forwards.

The current Dream Team for the season is in 3-5-2 formation and is way over budget, but packing and captaining midfielders does appear to be the way to go.

Which is why I have just dropped the massive chunk of cash that is Kane, and I can not afford the following team if I play just Morata up front (this isn't final - it's something I need to put together over the space of about 3 GWs:

      De Gea
      Alonso Monreal Daniels Ward (Zeegelar)
      Hazard Salah Coutinho Silva Ramsey
      Morata (DCL) (Niasse?)

Which is a terrifying team IMO, and so much better than I could afford when playing two (or more) expensive forwards.

Ramsey, and worth a look. Silva is a great player, but Coutinho seems to be generally more involved

I’ve got salah and no city attackers currently so don’t really fancy a Liverpool double.

I think I'm going for Liverpool double as they have excellent fixtures coming. City have a couple of difficult games and buses in the easier fixtures.
But if you're certain on getting one, I'd avoid Sane as he's on 4 yellows and plays very wide. Silva or Sterling

Anyone looking at Lingard? Looks like nailing down that no.10 spot for United at 5.8.

3 goals and an assist in last two!

He was on fire, nothing he did was lucky
