First-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard were just enough for Manchester United to claim victory at The Hawthorns, as a Gareth Barry strike for West Brom broke the hearts of David De Gea’s growing army of Fantasy owners.

Lukaku’s towering header from a Marcus Rashford cross gave the Belgian back to returns for the first time since Gameweek 7.

Backed by 819,000+ (14.9%) with the captaincy, Lukaku has now scored three in his past four appearances in all competitions.

Together with two bonus points, an eight-point return for the striker means that he is finally showing signs of turning the corner and reviving his stock as a premium-priced option.

Lukaku increased his ownership for the first time since Gameweek 7 prior to the meeting with the Baggies. But he had shed over 1.4 million over those ten previous Gameweeks.

Improved form, coupled with Man United’s fixtures could now help him reclaim some of those numbers.

Lukaku will face Leicester City next weekend, before Old Trafford encounters with Burnley and Southampton. That final home encounter falls in Gameweek 21, the blank for Harry Kane.

Lingard the Pogba alternative

Elsewhere in United’s attack, it is Jesse Lingard who has shown promise as a cut-price midfield option.

Valued at just 5.9 in FPL, Lingard again started in the No 10 role, flanked by Juan Mata and Rashford. His deflected strike from a Mata lay-off took him to four goals from his last three away matches.

Lingard claimed the maximum bonus points to give him a third double-figure return in five Gameweeks.

He is perhaps unfortunate that he has timed his ascent as a Fantasy prospect just as Paul Pogba returns to the equation.

The Frenchman – now down to 7.9 and 9.0% ownership in FPL – is back from suspension for the midweek EFL Cup tie at Bristol City, though he will likely be saved instead for the trip to the King Power Stadium.

Pogba averages 7.0 points per match and will doubtless be a key transfer target over the festive period.

He is already the fourth most-signed midfielder ahead of Gameweek 19, and his return to the United starting line-up could change the dynamic of their attack. This impacts on Lingard’s minutes and his current scoring rate requires monitoring.

Valencia blow as De Gea is denied

Gareth Barry’s second-half strike dragged West Brom back into Sunday’s contest and deprived Man United and David De Gea an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign.

The Spaniard still made four saves at The Hawthorns and has now produced at least one save point in seven of his last nine Gameweeks.

Mourinho kept faith with a back four having deployed a three-man defence in previous away matches.

That saw Phil Jones retain his start alongside Chris Smalling, with that pair seemingly the first choice centre-back partnership. It was the first time that Jones has started two matches within seven days this season.

Both Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof were on the bench but will likely get minutes at Bristol City and at least one of the four Gameweek outings to come.

Rojo did see action in the second period, replacing an injured Antonio Valencia who limped off on 65 minutes to claim a clean sheet for his 17.6% ownership. The Ecuadorian is now back at the top of the defender standings, though Mourinho confirmed post-match that the right-back had sustained a hamstring problem.

“This is what I call a December injury. It is an injury of accumulation of fatigue. It is a muscular one. Hamstring. Big, small, medium, I don’t know.”

However, Valencia was quick to play down concerns via social media earlier this evening, going on to say.

“Thanks for your support and concern. I am fine”.

Although that offers hope of a quick recovery, given how key he is to Mourinho’s plans, it’s perhaps unlikely that United will take any chances with Valencia and the Portuguese yet protect him over the Christmas fixtures. Valencia is yet to miss a Premier League appearance this season.

Depending on the prognosis, that could open the way for a number of options, including Rojo, Matteo Darmian (5.0) and even Luke Shaw (4.9) given that Ashley Young could be switched to the right to cover.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Madness to go without Kane for the DGW? Playing with the thought of having Eri(k)sen and Alli instead. Think Kane might disappoint like Kun did last year. This DGW won't be the same as the one at the end of last season when both Spurs' opponents were on the beach and basically the whole Spurs team was trying to ensure that Kane got as many as possible.

I think I recall a similar trajectory for him last season. Average during the autumn but then suddenly getting all those braces in a row and never looking back. He might just be a slow starter. Carrick (although a different position) was also like that for United, always underwhelming during the first part of the season then suddenly turning it around and looking unplayable in the second half.

If you don't currently own Kane then go for it. If not, it'll be messy to organise.

I'll be captaining, as long as he walk. Will probably hoping for an Ogbonna CS in the second game depending on his EO.

Still got my WC so have another 12 or so days to decide. If there was another day between games I wouldn't have even asked this question. But with only 48 games in between you've got to question how effective he will be in both games.

I think Kane is the most likely to start both matches, that's why I'm making him priority number one. Could be some rotation between Son / Alli / Eriksen / Lamela I think. Same starting 11 for 2 games in 2 days seems unlikely.

Given how premium forwards are performing, I can't see why anyone would want to go into GW22 without Kane. It just seems like an easy decision and captain. No hiding behind the sofa. No big deal if he doesn't explode as almost everyone will have captained him anyway. The real question is to TC or not to TC?

Who is considering a Free Hit for the TOT/WHU double game week? I am fairly certain I will go for that option instead of all the stress and planning (that could go out the window because of an injury or two) trying to maneuver a blank game week followed by a double.

What better chance will we have for the Free Hit? I'm not sold at all on the thought of using it to fill my team up with mediocre players from mid table teams in the FA cup blank gw.

Why would a maximum of 6 players with 2 games (2 days apart, so realistically they won't all even play both) ever be better value for a free hit than a week where your entire 11 can be hand-picked to play 2 games?

I think people are undervaluing the power of a well played FHC because we've never had it before. It could be absolutely huge if you get it right.

Sure, some managers will play it randomly and it will work. But on pure probability, when you use it in a DGW or a blank GW there is very little doubt - you will have the strongest possible team all the way through, and 150+ points is not out of the question.

Another factor is that you should also have your highest TV and SV by that stage, so in theory you will be able to assemble a ridiculously strong team for that week. I can't see how a TOT-WHM double up comes anywhere near these positives.

Also, just plan a bit for GW22 and it's the same. I'm going to have 5 players from Spurs and Hammers by resting 2 in GW21 (Kane + Ogbonna), saving my FT, and getting Lloris + Vertonghen + Lanzini (-4) for GW22. Or something like that.

So for a -4 I'll have 5 players with the DGW, and still have my Free Hit Chip. Surely makes more sense?

Thoughts on having all David Silva, Sterling and KDB in a midfield with Salah and Richarlison?

Caveat would be to get rid of Otamendi to accommodate, oh and would be at a -8 hit...

Having all 3 seems it’ll reap huge benefits, they’ll all score more than otamdendi throughout the season, it’s just the case of taking such a big hit though.

    Thoughts?

Think you’re right, but knowing I’m missing out not having kdb is hurting. Against Swansea Sterling kdb and silva picked up 32 points between them so if they can all perform at the same time in games I’m laughing. Think my means of getting all 3 in though are perhaps not the best.

Would't do it for a -8. Yeah i am definitely thinking about that. However, would mean replacing Haz or Coutinho for me and don't want to lose either.

    A. Morata + RLC + Duffy --> Austin + Sterling + Ogbonna -4

    B. Kane + RLC + Duffy --> Depoitre + KDB + 6.5 defender -4

    C. Any other way to get a city mid in without losing Salah, Hazard, Coutinho and Richarlson...

    Thanks

Arnautovic C could be a lovely differential next GW(melons essential)

Could be a negative differential, too, which I wouldn't recommend
