Just as the Harry Kane apologists were beginning to diminish or be drowned out, the Spurs striker confirmed his status as a devastating Fantasy asset with a bolt from the blue.

Kane’s hat-trick delivered an unexpected season-high haul of 17 points at Burnley, a venue that had previously seen just three goals conceded to away sides.

The foundations for Kane’s treble were laid early with a first penalty kick of the season for Spurs.

A controversial incident involving Dele Alli – who was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch following an early cautioned foul – that crucial early goal opened the game up. That allowed Mauricio Pochettino’s side to belie their recent form and put on an impressive attacking display.

Under those conditions, Kane could emphatically underline his Fantasy credentials. His eight shots, with six arriving in the penalty area, were again a Gameweek high.

The striker was sold by 108,000 ahead of Friday’s deadline, having lost 135,000 owners in Gameweek 18.

He will now next on Southampton at Wembley Stadium in Gameweek 20 with renewed confidence. An assured starter, that fixture now creates another scenario that could punish recent sellers further.

Some 867,000 opted for Kane as their captain this weekend – only 40% of his ownership. That figure will surely increase for the visit of Southampton.

Kane needs just one strike against the Saints to beat Alan Shearer’s record for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year. Meanwhile, Southampton will arrive without a clean sheet in their last ten Gameweeks.

The striker’s comments post-match made it obvious that the record will be on his mind come Boxing Day.

“We wanted the second goal to kill the game and when I scored it, I thought ‘right, let’s get the hat-trick’, I was happy to put that one away, I’m really pleased. I can now go into the game on Tuesday and try to get the record, that would be a great achievement.”

Kane now has 15 goals for the season – level with Mohamed Salah – and is up to 114 points in FPL overall’s standings – placing him fourth behind Salah (145), Raheem Sterling (125) and Kevin De Bruyne (116).

It remains to be seen how the market reacts, with Kane facing the missing fixture in Gameweek 21, before a double-header against Swansea City (away) and West Ham United (home) in Gameweek 22.

Should his price rise, it will be another consideration for those contemplating trading the striker out for his blank Gameweek, with extra profit potentially lost along with the transfers involved.

It will also mean those pondering a move back for Kane may have to find more cash to fund the deal ahead of his double.

After all the recent questioning and debate, there can be no question that Kane will be seen as near essential for Gameweek 22, with the Triple Captain chip also being prepared.

Pochettino shuffles the pack

Elsewhere for Spurs, there were four changes to the line-up, as Serge Aurier and Ben Davies ousted Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose in the latest phase of rotation at full-back. We have to presume that this will be reversed on Boxing Day.

Davinson Sanchez returned from his suspension to take his place in the back four, with Eric Dier shifting to midfield. Harry Winks was missing with a minor ankle injury.

Two assists for Alli signalled brief respite from a miserable run of form, yet the controversy of the early penalty, plus his challenge that may well have warranted a dismissal, overshadowed those events.

Alli remains on the periphery of Fantasy thinking, while even a resurgent Christian Eriksen is struggling to compete for midfield selection in our squads.

The Dane blanked on Saturday having returned in each of his last four Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I do not feel any remorse for those who sold Kane as you clearly made a decision based on a twitter trend and not necessarily any statistical analysis.

Only one number convinced me to give him the armband and that was Burnleys ΔxGC of -13.30 !!

Take a peek before it updates!

Kane’s statistics have been good all season but his goals haven’t though. When should one give up on stats? 19 weeks is a fair amount of time

looks like I chose the highest scoring week of the season to free hit, classic. picked a team full of what I considered to be the best players unowned by 'the pack' in a last ditch attempt to get pack into 'the pack.' was the tactic with the biggest potential upside, obviously downside too.
now completely out of the race with a chip less.
15 captain fails (only 3 of my captains have scored a goal), and just 2 clean sheets from my goalkeepers had completely worn me out. 3 injuries and not wanting to play an everton defender or maguire this gw meant flirting with the free-hit idea, the bony injury on monday night tipped me over the edge. on paper otamendi was my only player with good form and a good fixture. would it have shocked anyone if salah, coutinho, hazard or kane blanked this gw? on paper it was potential banana skin away games. they of course went and averaged about 10 points each.

free-hit team: 55. if i did absolutely nothing (would have captained kane, when no one sticks out i usually just stick it on kane): 80, with only 9 players! particular highlight was just watching lukaku and pogba somehow only get 4 points while maguire (only of the free-hit catalysts) got 7 on his own.

self-awareness that this is boring self-centered b*******, and is only a game (seeing players doing their annual xmas children's hospital visits and Az's tweet about his dad really did ram that home). but is getting too hard to sweep all this football related horror under the carpet (watford fan too). recently sat at my girlfriend's birthday dinner verging on miserable after a particularly torturous footballing day. that's just not cool! felt a terrible selfish person.

feel it's apt to effectively throw in the towell as chadli gets re-injured. next season i'll go again #coolstorybro

Perspective is a great thing. If it impacts on real life in this manner pack it in , it really isn't worth it. You obviously have a life which you care about so ensure that FPL is prioritised way below this. It's just a virtual game - that says it all.

I agree that it was a gameweek that could make sense to free hit. I wouldn't have been surprised if the players you mentioned did indeed blank. The way it turned out sucks, but looking back at your gameweek history it's obvious that you did nothing wrong other than constantly losing the captaincy coin-flip.
On the other hand we have certain people who go through a season without hitting a single mine. Mané gets sent off early in the season? No worries, they had Salah before he was the sensation he is now. Pogba got injured? No worries, they had Mkhitaryan instead. They didn't manage to get Ben Davies in when he's on fire? No worries, Pochettino rotates him to hell and back.

I think your feeling at the party was more than just a gruesome football day getting to you. It's probably the tidal wave of having so many frustrating gameweeks piled up that was the driving factor. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if the season does feel lost it could be beneficial like you say to 'let it go'.

You're clearly interested in the game and reacting this way just confirms that. It's not necessarily a bad thing to react strongly. You already demonstrate self-awareness in your post, mindfulness is another tool for handling similar things. Look into it if it doesn't sound too goofy ;). I think it comes down to personality in the end. I for one can't do many different things at once so I tend to go kind of 'all-in' for certain things. As a result, I get higher highs and lower lows from my interests, whereas others who have many things going on may care less about each one.

Depends who they got in with the money I guess. If it enabled them to get Sterling and Coutinho over 2 duds for example then they are up I suppose.

I must clarify I never contemplated selling Kane but it’s not as simple as saying he scored a hattrick this week so it’s a mistake.

Transfered Smalling in before this GW. My two cheaper midfielders Zaha and Richarlison did not deliver and Hazard kept quiet too.

(K)ane to save my GW with Firmino, Salah and Sterling.
