Scout Notes – Premier Pair Make Progress

Huddersfield Town need extra time to ensure that their FA Cup journey goes on – and another Gameweek 31 fixture will go ahead – while a forgotten striker option finds some form as Swansea City destroy lower-league opposition.

The most notable issue to arise from Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at Birmingham last night was that it now guarantees a third fixture will be played in Gameweek 31.

The Terriers had to wait until extra time to secure their place in the fifth round and a home tie with Manchester United.

That, in turn, means one of those sides will be able to fulfil their league fixture when the quarter-finals take place over the weekend of March 16.

Huddersfield are due to entertain Crystal Palace in the league on that date, while United travel to West Ham.

As both the Eagles and the Hammers are already out of this season’s FA Cup, one of those fixtures will now join the other two matches – Liverpool v Watford and Stoke City v Everton – already guaranteed to take place during Gameweek 31.

Terriers coach David Wagner made five changes to the side that lost at Old Trafford on Saturday, but it was still a team packed with regular starters.

Striker Laurent Depoitre and defender Christopher Schindler missed out through injury, but Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince were recalled in midfield, with the latter’s shot leading to an own goal that leveled the tie.

Despite incessant pressure, Huddersfield couldn’t find a winner in 90 minutes, although they put the tie to bed early on in extra time.

Steve Mounie, from a Mooy assist, and Rajiv van La Parra scored within seven minutes of the restart before Ince rounded off the win a minute into the second period.

Abraham stakes his claim

At the start of Gameweek 12, Swansea striker Tammy Abraham’s ownership peaked at just under one million managers, and his price at 6.0, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Fourteen Gameweeks, no goals and six price drops later, just over 200,000 managers remain.

Four goals in eight Gameweeks made him one of the leading early-season budget strikers in FPL; a mantle that team-mate Jordan Ayew is currently trying on for size.

But Abraham’s star turn in last night’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County looked particularly well-timed in light of the season-ending injury suffered by Wilfried Bony in the Swans’ 1-1 draw at Leicester City last weekend.

Speaking before the FA Cup fourth round replay, manager Carlos Carvalhal was happy to talk up Abraham’s prospects.

“Tammy Abraham is an interesting player. He has only been training with us for something like a week and a half after injury. Wilfried’s injury will give more opportunities to him and he is someone we believe in a lot.”

The striker responded with an eye-catching first-half display against the League Two side, scoring two goals and setting up another as the Swans went into the interval 4-1 up.

Abraham then capped a fine display with an assist for the final goal.

Carvalhal’s post-match summary acknowledged the striker’s performance, though he also made it clear that he expects more.

“He is progressing – but he can do better in my opinion. He knows he can do better. If you ask me between now and when we arrived has he progressed, he has but I’m still thinking he can do better. We will try to push him to do better.”

Ayew’s four goals in the last eight Gameweeks is likely to keep him in the side for the short term. However, Abraham will need monitoring, particularly if he is given a chance to take advantage of his team’s excellent schedule.

Swansea entertain Burnley this weekend before an FA Cup fifth round tie at Sheffield Wednesday.

The fixtures after that (bha WHU hud SOT mun wba EVE) could well decide their Premier League fate and if Abraham can rediscover his early-season form, it could revitalise a side that has managed a joint-worst 19 league goals thus far.

New signings Andre Ayew and Andy King were cup-tied and unavailable to Carvalhal, who made seven changes to the team that drew at Leicester. That saw him revert to a 4-4-1-1, giving Luciano Narsingh an opportunity to impress on the right flank.

The Dutch international set up three of the Swans’ four first-half goals as Abraham and Nathan Dyer – again playing up behind Abraham – scored two apiece.

Kyle Naughton also boosted his stock with a second-half goal, at a time when Fantasy managers will be assessing the merits of the Swans backline.

Wayne Routledge, Tom Carroll and debutant Dan James rounded off the scoring, with an assist coming from Routledge.

Swansea are now one win from an FA Cup quarter-final place.

Should they beat Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round, that would mean their Gameweek 31 home match with Southampton would have to be rescheduled.

And even if they don’t, the league match might still not go ahead as the Saints also remain in the FA Cup.

The south coast side take on West Brom in the fifth round. Should the Baggies be knocked out, their Gameweek 31 trip to Bournemouth would then be confirmed.

A reminder that Ben Crellin’s Twitter Moment provides full detail on the scenarios that could develop for Gameweek 31 and beyond.

Alternative BGW31 and beyond strategy, if you have your chips …
    - ignore GW31 🙂 .... load up on players now that do NOT have a game in GW31, use your transfers for players you actually want in your team without compromise
    - enjoy the benefit of points from these premium players from now to GW31 (rather than compromising on Everton, Stoke players etc.)
    - use the FH chip to get a 100% nailed best possible team in BGW31, plus a bench that protects against injury or rotation
    - boomerang your fully loaded GW30 team in to GW32 in the safe knowledge that it is already full of DGW34 players (remember they blanked in GW31 😉 )
    - use a few transfers to fine tune your GW34 DGW team without the need of a WC (you already have the doublers)
    - carry 2 free transfers in to BGW35 to put out a banging decent 11 from the six fixtures that are guaranteed to take place (which includes a minimum of three guaranteed teams from the top 6)
    - WC in GW36 to get 12 or 13 double game week players in GW37
    - BB DGW37
    - Carry a great 11 and playing bench in to rotation rife GW38

Walcott/Deulofeu/Shaqiri look decent value and most of the well-owned 4.5-5.0 defenders are not delivering either so realistically, at worst, those people are just swapping shite for more shite (albeit shite that will actually play in 31).

            This.

If you want to have 11 players in GW31 you do not have to have one of those players. You have to have ALL of those players.

You have to spend 3 of your midfielder spots on sub-par players, that's what.

Let's say Salah and Sterling are a given, I'd much rather have someone like Son/Pogba and Mkhi/Ramsey for the coming weeks than those three.

you don't need all 3 before GW31 though, you can get two of them on GW31 if you really think they are sub-par players. Those 3 could potentially outscore Son, Pogba & Ramsey anyway, they are quite a lot cheaper and won't have European rotation.

That's up to you, but I wouldn't be buying the players you listed anyway (even without blanks).

I don't think the GW31 options are sub-optimal. But even if they are, the sub-optimal players are a bit cheaper, so comparing them to Mkhi is a bit unfair, because realistically, people are selling Lingard and other players who are wasting funds in their team. Otherwise, they the cheaper players allow you to spend more elsewhere. It just means applying a bit of common sense.

                  1. Darklord_bg

I'm OK with replacing Lingard with Shaq/Delofeu/Richarlison (that's what I'd do anyway), but not with getting those three now instead of the ones I mentioned. I guess I can see the logic in getting two GW31 players in GW31, but that's still only 3 players. That means up to GW 31 you will have to gradually replace your premium defenders with cheapies or take a lot of hits GW31.

From my experience players from teams under top6 are too inconsistent - I try to have at most 2-3 of them in my team, since they've proven really frustrating.

My premium defenders Azpi and Alonso were always likely to go after their great fixtures ended anyway (maybe Alonso less so), and Otamendi is expendable too. We'll have to see what fixtures are really happening next week and the week after.

The team needs to evolve anyway, so it makes sense to include GW31 in the decision making process, and weigh up each transfer on a case-by-case basis.

      2. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

We'll just have to wait and see. For now, I'm glad I have 5 definite GW31 players (plus one Palace player) and I'm rolling a transfer. This way I can make an executive decision next week.

It's still good advice to have been buying players who have a game in GW31 so that people get closer to the threshold number of players to be able to go either way. You don't want to be stuck with only 8-9 players if we end up with 5 fixtures in GW31, and everybody who planned ahead has 11 good players for free (not necessarily dross, because there are good players available from the current fixtures, plus there will be more available from the hypothetical 2 or 3 extra fixtures).

Yeah I'm in a similar boat and will roll the transfer and then make an executive decision. I think if you're team already has a few that will play in GW31 this is the best option. It also allows you to FH and get the players you actually want in GW35. A GW know there will be some big teams in.

How well are those five players doing now though? And how well are they going to do in the weeks up to GW31? (liverpool players excluded)

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years

Why would I exclude Liverpool players?

I have Salah, Firmino who I had anyway, and are doing well enough. Shaqiri I bought with GW31 in mind, and he's doing well enough.

I had Zeegelaar already, who might end up being a regular again, and approx.imately as good an option as anyone in that price bracket.

I had Speroni/Hennessey anyway, and hope that they play in GW35 - they have been good value.

And then I have Coleman as my punt, which is hard to judge because he hasn't played since I bought him last week for the bench, and he's my replacement for the other premium defenders when I eventually downgrade them (so he can be benched for me any time). Plus other defenders aren't doing spectacularly anyway, so at worst, he's just expensive, but with plenty of potential.

There are plenty of other options to consider too. Stoke defenders have great fixtures, though I wouldn't use a transfer on them yet unless you need another starter for the current GW. And there's Deulofeu and Walcott, who are likely the best at that price range anyway.

You misunderstood me: when I said Liverpool players excluded, I meant they were players who are worth having even without playing in the blank and the'll do well in the coming weeks.

As for the other four you've mentioned, none of them fill me with confidence. Two of them are not even regular starters yet.

We'll see, I guess, but for me using transfers and getting players just for one game week, when we have FT available, seems like a waste.

I'm not advocating buying Zeegelaar, just like I'm not advocating buying Stoke defenders this week if you can afford to save a transfer.

I'm not advocating buying Coleman, either. Again you may as well wait to see what options there are next week.

You're criticising the wrong thing. I bought Coleman because I wanted him, and I'm advocating people doing the same with other players they want who happen to play in GW31, so long as there aren't far superior options who blank (and even then you have to weigh up the cost and benefit given a missed fixture).

We're not talking about dedicating 5FTs to it before next week, because that's impossible. We're talking about 2 or 3 transfers in the lead up to gaining more information about the blank GW, so it's too late now.

This week is a strange one where I would advocate against my advice to buy GW31 players, simply because I would advocate for making no transfers at all if that's possible for your team.

Anyway, each to their own 🙂

Doesn’t this assume that you will have no BGW31 players in your team before 31? What happens if you happen to have a team of some blank game week players and some no blank? Then in 32 you will still have those blank gameweek players and not a full load of prime 34 double gameweek players? Or am I missing something?

That's what he is saying - transfer them out before GW31 - should be doable for virtually everyone (if they wanted to do this) with the number of weeks left before GW31.

yes you may have a few BGW31 players now in your team (Salah, Firmino, Walcott etc.) and that is just the nature of the doubles whereby you always have a few single game week players that do better than the double players (that get subbed or play just one game anyway) - just don't get any more for the sake of it and then use your WC to get rid of them 🙂

Yeah, but it will probably be 2 or 3 Liverpoll players. Maybe Walcott and 1 or 2 others. So they are good to have after BGW31 anyway

What's the best strategy for this if you have all chips remaining apart from Free Hit?

      – Build up a team now ready for BGW31
      – Wildcard in GW32 getting it ready for DGW34
      – Bench Boost or Triple Captain DGW34
      – Do your best for BGW35
      – Bench Boost or Triple Captain DGW37
      – Enjoy the final day hopefully being top of ML.

I don´t think it is big problem. You get 3 players from Liverpool (Firmino, Salah, Mane/VVD/Ox/full back), walcott, shaqiri and you have 5 players that everyone will have in their FH teams. And i believe this players will do good until gw 31 and will score the majority of points in that gw too. And from next week you will now who blanks so you will add 2,3,4 more players and have 8,9,10 players. Those who will use FH will have maybe 10 points more from shitty teams players, but you will have big advantage in gw 35.

And where do you fit in ARS players for example? And at the cost of which players do you fit in Mane for example? Hazard? Sanchez? KDB?

I don´t want to get ARS players in now. But if i want to bring them in i can do it at the cost of B. Silva, Lingard (i still have some money ITB). At ARS i am looking at midfielders, Auba is too pricey i think whit Firmino in my team.

Good post thanks but doesn’t seem that revolutionary to me? This is one of the strategies laid out in an article a couple of weeks ago.

Surely the main decision is just whether to play Free Hit in GW31 or GW35.

I blew my wildcard already and have 6 players with a fixture in GW31 in place so I’ll be a FH in GW35. I can’t really commit either way to covering the blank or the double so will have to hedge my bets, take a few hits and pray.

This could be a good plan, particularly if FA Cup results conspire to make it harder to navigate GW31 with free transfers (WBA beating Southampton would be a pain for me), but there are still potential down sides to consider:

      - You need to plan in advance for the DGW players you want in GW34, which always involves some risk.
      - You also have to balance this against GW35 blanks, and only two of the Top 6 are guaranteed not to blank that week.
      - You will have sacrificed some of the value of being able to use the WC to plan over a longer period.
      - The BB return in GW37 could be affected by fewer DGW fixtures, and the the greater likelihood of rotation (eg City have already won the league, European priorities, teams on the beach, and maybe even the World Cup).

My plan , for now, is to use FTs to navigate GW31 - there are still good players I need to bring in - and deploy the WC in GW32 or 33 ahead of the BB in GW35 and FH in GW35. With the squad optimised for the doubles, I can use my FTs for late-season tweaks.

It will be interesting to see if an optimum strategy emerges while we still have the flexibility to adapt.

What's the thoughts on bench boost V triple captain chip for DGW 34 v DGW37 using this strategy?

Bench boost is the more lucrative option if you get it right I would guess

      1. Hotdogs for Tea
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 2 months ago

All depends on fixtures, which we don’t know yet.

A later WC in 36 and bench boost in 37 means you don’t carry an expensive bench for too long (you don’t want your money on your bench apart from the GW you bench boost) and also means you have a good bench for rotation issues in 38.

GW33 WC and GW34 BB may give a better choice of fixtures, and few transfers the week after could easily swap cash from the bench to the team

        1. GreenArrows
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

Can't use the transfer the week after as you will be playing the FH GW35 (if you have it and not played it in GW31) so have to wait till GW36 to spread the cash from the bench to the team

Yes, it all gets a bit ‘chip heavy’, which is why I will maybe using the FH in 31 and WC in 36.

FH in 35 is a great option but it does kill off any free transfers you may be carrying too

Interesting idea. For me it comes down to what happens in West Brom vs Southampton in the cup.

      If West Brom are out:
I'll be using the FH in 31 as you suggest, but wildcarding in 33, bringing in at 5-6 Arsenal and Liverpool players, a couple of Burnley players, and a cheapie midfielder fro Newcastle or West Ham to give me a spine that allows me to get 11 out in GW35 using 2 free transfers. This lets me bench boosted in 34 with 12-13DGW players - the exceptions being liverpool players, who are at home to Bournemouth. I then have 2 free transfers to bring in 2DGWer's for 37, where there are only really Leicester, Man City and Arsenal I'd like to load up on anyway. This gives me 6DGWer's here too, without taking any hits.

If West Brom Stay in the cup:
Much simpler - negotiate the Week 31 blanks with 1 possibly 2 hits, WC Week 32, BB34, FH35.

A refreshing strategy, and very much in line with my thinking. I have wildcarded this week, possibly one week too soon, but time will tell. I hope that I can get some good points with a fresh team loaded with top 6 players and focussing on the better value defensive points with a 5-4-1 strategy.

      So thinking out loud...
27: Wildcard (focus on top 6 team players)
      28-30: Correct/adapt team
BGW 31: Free Hit (Keep Liverpool players)
32-33: Get ready for bench boost (save one transfer if possible)
      DGW 34: Bench Boost
      BGW35: 2FTs to adapt
36: Start taking out players with nothing to play for
DGW 37: Tripple Captain (Someone with something to play for)
      38: Conservative team

      Great analysis.

My guess is that the best strategy is dependant on what your team looks like now, and whether or not theres any upsets in the cupgames.

Surely if you've already got 2-3 lfc players and maybe 2-3 players from Stoke, Watford and EFC, you're prob better off making a couple of moves toward gw31 using FT. However, if you've only got 2-3 players from these clubs at this point, its probably more sensible to go with your strategy.

Lets say your close to the template but far from covered in 31. Something like this perhaps:

      Elliot - DDG
      Jones, Alonso, Ota, Ogbonna, Duffy
      Salah, Sterling, Son, Lingard, RLC
      Kane, Aguero, Ayew
(your 10 moves away from being able to field a full team in gw31, don't even botter trying, it's not worth it)

However your team might also look something like this
      Foster - Fabianski
      Jones, Alonso, Ota, Gomez, Duffy
      Salah, Sterling, Son, Shaq, Doucoure
      Kane, Firmino, Wilson
(Your 6 moves away from having a full squad in gw31. You have sensible moves going forward, both with regards to close fixtures and gw31. Exampe: Son --> Walcott still puts you close to the template while swapping in a player with better fix and form. Duffy can easily be swapped for a team with gw 31 fix. Foster, fabianski and Wilson all have shouts at a game in 31 and can calmly remain in the squad. Team looks able to compete with free hitters in 31 without loosing much ground.)

Point is, theres prob not a single strategy better than the others, it all depends on your current squad

        • 8 Years

        Squad and fixtures hugely important.

The less blanks we get in GW31 (if teams fall out of the FA CUP) then maybe the number of blanks fall off in GW35 too, not sure how that leaves us with deciding upon when to use the FH chip - maybe not even during a BGW ? 🙂

This is the problem with Wilson, his price has made us think he's a good rotator, he isn't, he has to played... and you risk benching hefty points.

I started playing FPL in the 2013/14 season and there were about 3/3.5m players. Now we are up to almost 6m!!!
Surely with this amount of players along with the addition of chips that can potentially jump your OR up thousands of places in one week, maintaining a high position season after season is going to become increasingly difficult?

It could be broadly the same. Around half of managers drop out by Christmas...by March even more. Also alot of those above 5m are new teams going for weekly prizes.

The key is whether the pool of players who know what they are doing is getting any bigger. That's the problem - that there are now say 300,000 managers rather than say 100,000 who are doing all the right things and could challenge for a 10K place.

When I first started a decade or so ago I'd say it was definitely easier to get a good rank. I finished 59K in my first season - I didn't make a transfer for four weeks as didn't know how and captained Defoe every week for about two months as kept forgetting to change it. That sort of behaviour now would earn me 500K ranking at best.

When I started playing, sites like FFS were a well kept secret, the person giving advice on the FPL home page was an average player called The Pundit rather than an expert like The Scout (Mark), and there were no Daily Updates, no FPL Show, and no FPL tweets.

There is now a far larger pool of players who are aware of and benefit from all these things, so there are now far more serious contenders for fairly high rankings.

I don't like the chips, but number of players isn't too much of a problem. A few might spike a lucky season but experience and planning will get you above 95% of them.

        Thats the ‘problem’

Yes, but that's just to get ahead of the dross. Then you are playing against the "the pool of players who know what they are doing", as Jonty put it.

I've been inside the top 1k a few seasons but never managed to finish that high (same again this season) but my ranks don't seem to be getting too much worse for the number of new players... Top 10k is obviously slightly harder but not by too much.

What ruins and skews the data is the amount of one week accounts signing up for the prizes and it distorts the averages. Also the highest points scorer every week is somebody playing a chip, unlike a few years back when it was outright the best. It's a shame.

(Slightly off topic but wanted to rant)

Yes, I don't like these prizes for one week wonders rather than for the players who excel over the whole season.

At least FPL now seem to be giving less publicity to them than they were doing earlier in the season.

I don’t think so. Whilst the amount of genuine active players has no doubt increased, that 6m number is a joke. It’s going up and up each week just from people making new teams to get the highest gameweek score. Without knowing and just a guess, I’d say the actual number of still active players that started in, say, the first 4 weeks is closer to 3m than 6m.

Think it is a lot easier to start playing now with the large amount of info available on internet - data, forums, youtube.
Probably harder to do consistently well as a casual player. I missed 3 GWs last season through "injury" which took me out of top 10k down to 60k.
Take a good rank as a % finish then can still do well with a lower OR finish. Anything you do when you finish in the top 1-2% should be seen as a success.

how many people will have multiple teams though.
I am in a sub 9 mill league where at least half a dozen are in the top 100,000 overall. Although technically this is against the rules to have another team it isn't like actually running 3 or 4 teams to try and spread your chances of getting it right. There will be loads of players who do this.

This is one of the big reasons that experienced FPL managers have such a fixed idea about deploying wildcards late in the season to take advantage of blanks/doubles etc, instead of the much rarer earlier deployment to make wholesale changes to take advantage of form/fixtures/template. We use it pretty much the same time each year and then slap ourselves on the back at the inevitable jump in rank, at precisely the time when half the managers globally have tailed off having already used their chips.

It's makes clear statistical sense to use bench boost, triple captain, free hits (all of which are just one-week shots) in double or blank gameweeks, but i've yet to see someone make a good case for deploying WC at this time instead of preparation/hits etc. I'm not saying it absolutely should be played early, just that each season is a different context yet we treat them as the same

I don't know how many players registered their team at a starts of season, but I think the weekly prize make some peoples registering a new team every GW, that actually doesn't affect in your OR.. I started a game in 13/14 too (ranked 3M). It's up every season and now I'm in a top100. Maybe it's just about how hard you work, and how you react to your experience (remember that others do the same)..

Yes it will be more and lore difficult. The popularity of the game has increased massively and most of all, sound advise and useful information is much easier to find with the FPL show, the Scout articles, the involvement of Mark on Facebook, on the FPL Show... the number of people who can do well ‘by mistake’ (without necessarily understanding football properly) is getting higher by the year
