Having wrapped up the previous gameweek in this afternoonโ€™s digest post, we can now turn our attentions to this weekend and beyond. Once again, we bring the fixtures list under review, assessing the weak and the strong from the upcoming fixture scheduleโ€ฆ

Before we begin, non-members may note we now have a demo version of the ticker available to try, using data from the 2010/11 season. For those unfamiliar with the intricacies of the ticker, click on this handy โ€œhow-toโ€ link for further explanation:

The Strong

Fulham

Given that Man City had won all eleven of their previous home games, Saturday eveningโ€˜s Etihad loss was hardly unexpected for Martin Jolโ€™s men. The upcoming fixture schedule should afford the Cottagers a chance to bounce back, though, with some promising gameweeks on the horizon.

Three home clashes in the next five look prosperous, as Stoke, Wolves and Swansea all make their way to the Cottage. Jolโ€™s side have dropped just five points in their last six in front of their own fans, and have scored 22 goals at home, only 2 less than Tottenham.

A trip to QPR, with Mark Hughesโ€™ side yet to record a clean sheet under his leadership, and a visit to Villa Park – where the hosts have two points from their last six at home โ€“ should hold no fear for the London outfit. With Clint Dempsey looking set to remain in an advanced attacking role, his Fantasy suitors will continue to grow, though with a single clean sheet in the last ten, defensive returns havenโ€™t been as guaranteed as weโ€™d hoped for.

QPR

It all seemed so promising last Saturday. One-nil up thanks to a Bobby Zamora debut goal, Mark Hughesโ€™ side were bossing the game against Wolves but Djibril Cisseโ€™s red card turned the match in the visitorsโ€™ favour and saw QPR taste defeat for the first time under their new manager.

Having scored 5 goals and picked up four points in the previous two games under Hughes, thereโ€™s a clear upturn in performance since the departure of Neil Warnock and, providing they can keep eleven men on the pitch, their prospects looks enhanced over the next few gameweeks. Back-to-back home games with Fulham and Everton are sandwiched by trips to Blackburn and Bolton; all offer the chance of goals, as Hughes looks to replicate the Martin Oโ€™Neill effect down Loftus Road way.

Hughes has already spoken of the importance of Adel Taarabt- the Moroccan could be a key figure over the next few matches. The set-pieces of Joey Barton could be instrumental, with Zamora charged with grabbing the goals in Cisseโ€™s subsequent three-match absence.

Wigan

Without a win in their last nine matches, the Latics hardly inspire confidence. Nevertheless, the fixture list remains kind to Roberto Martinezโ€™s side and could yet prove prosperous. Villa, Swansea and West Brom all roll up to the DW over the next five gameweeks and offer the chance of Fantasy points- Wigan have been beaten just once in their last five home games, holding the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool and narrowly losing to City.

Trips to Bolton and Norwich both offer potential, with the likes of Hugo Rodallega (with 23 points in his last four starts) likely to be pivotal if Martinez is to mastermind a climb up the table. Jean Beausejour could prove a real differential; the winger grabbed an assist and the maximum bonus in his home debut against Everton, while weโ€™ll always hold out hope for the enigma that is Victor Moses.

Man City

Roberto Manciniโ€™s side ready themselves for three home matches in the next five, with two of those in particular looking full of goals. Blackburn and Bolton roll up to the Etihad in gameweeks 26 and 27 respectively and Fantasy investment in the league leaders looks set to mushroom, with Sergio Aguero and, to a lesser extent, David Silva, strong armband candidates. Given that City have scored 3 or more goals in ten of their twelve home games, the potential is obvious here.

City will need to up their goal threat for trips to Villa and Swansea, though. The league leaders have been toothless on their travels of late, scoring just once in their last four away games and returning a couple of clean sheets in the process; Micah Richards and Vincent Kompany-if he recovers from a knee problem- look set to benefit from such defensive resolve.

Also Consider

Chelsea โ€“ the 3-3 draw with United extended their unbeaten run to five and brought Juan Mata back into consideration. Home games with Bolton and West Brom are amongst the Bluesโ€™ next four, affording the Blues further opportunity to produce the Fantasy points.

Newcastle โ€“ trips to Spurs and Arsenal are far from easy, but with Demba Ba scoring 8 of his 16 goals on the road, the prospect of returns is far from diminished. Three strong home fixtures against Wolves, Sunderland and Norwich afford Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse the chance for goals, with the likes of Tim Krul and Danny Simpson offering defensive options at the back.

Aston Villa โ€“ Alex McLeishโ€™s side have impressed on their travels of late, winning three and drawing one of their last five. With Darren Bent is fine goalscoring fettle, trips to Wigan and Blackburn and a home clash with Fulham look tempting.

The Weak

Liverpool

Kenny Dalglishโ€™s side have netted just 4 times in their last five, with Craig Bellamy grabbing half of those goals. The return of Luis Suarez failed to breach a resilient Tottenham back-line, with the Anfield no-score draw returning their third clean sheet since gameweek 20.

Clashes against United and Arsenal will test their defensive resolve, though, and with a blank gameweek 26 due to Carling Cup commitments in addition to a trip to Sunderland, many will be giving Liverpool a wide berth over the short-term.

Everton

David Moyesโ€™ side may well have three home fixtures in the next five, but when you consider the visitors are Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal, the appeal considerably lessens. The Toffees have been grinding out the points of late, with the 1-1 draw at Wigan taking their unbeaten run to four, but have picked up a single clean sheet in their last six and have failed to score more than 1 goal in the last twelve gameweeks.

Factor in that blank gameweek 26 and it seems likely that owners of Leighton Baines will likely be seeking options elsewhere and, unless the introduction of Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic can produce an upturn in attacking fortunes, goals are looking a rarity, too.

Tottenham

Harry Redknappโ€™s side are set for a truly testing time, as they face up to a run of fixtures which includes clashes with four of the top six over the next six gameweeks.

Home games against Newcastle and United, in addition to cross-town trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, will test the resolve of a defence which has harvested 9 clean sheets so far this season. Fantasy owners of Benoit Assou-Ekotto could see diminished returns, and with Emmanuel Adebayor netting once in his last nine games, it appears Gareth Bale is the only clear Fantasy asset worth targeting, or holding onto, over the upcoming period.

Also Be Wary Ofโ€ฆ

Stoke โ€“ Tony Pulisโ€™ side have a couple of strong home fixtures with Swansea and Norwich around the corner, but, aside from those two games, the next six gameweeks look awful. Trips to Chelsea, Spurs and Fulham and a home clash with City all look likely to disappoint. With just 5 goals and 2 clean sheets in their last eight games, the Potters are not exactly in the best of form right now.

Arsenal – the next four gameweeks look a real test for the armband potential of Robin Van Persie. The Dutchmanโ€™s 23 point haul against Blackburn justified many a Fantasy managerโ€™s decision to hand him the captaincy but trips to Sunderland and Liverpool, and home showdowns with Spurs and Newcastle, could see many look for alternatives.

Regarding Dempsey, im interested in opinions as an american: what is your take on him? Is he only capable of success as a big fish in a small pond? I remember he voiced his desire to play for a CL caliber club. Would he be a regular in a CL club?
I am so proud of his success in the PL. I'd hate for him to become a peripheral figure at a bigger club.

Dempsey has a frigging great shot and has intelligent positioning that gets him into scoring positions. Has something like the most shots of any midfielder. His pace isn't impressive but he's not that sort of player. I think the problem would be getting him to work in the system of a big club. I think he's not so big on assists (10 goals, 4 assists this season) so very much would be a chance taker as opposed to a chance creator. At the same time, he's not really a striker and more of a CAM, where you would be expected to create. All these things make him less useful in a system and may help explain why he hasn't gone higher so far in his career.

I think Tottenham would suit him well. Liverpool too.

Van der Vaart is always out injured, and Dempsey can tuck in the hole if he's out. He can also play on the right when VDVs playing; easily the weakest spot in our midfield. Lennon isn't that good. He also has the flexibility to play striker, a position we need desperately.

Liverpool just don't have a good RM, in the centre they are covered though. Up front is another issue for them, although with Suarez back they have a creative player.

I can't really think of another big club which uses a formation that suits him

Technically, they are completely different. But positionally, they are very similar. Both like playing behind a striker and can play out on the right.

i think being American used to be a stigma.

but if you look at the US imports over the years, it's quite decent (Howard, Friedel, Donovan etc). however, they never seemed to be regarded as top quality like Italian, Dutch or South American players.

it was more like "oh, he's really rather better than we expected. he can stay".

i think Dempsey would struggle at a, and i hesitate to use the term, "bigger club". not because he isn’t good but because the bigger clubs usually promote flashy talent and not hard working, unsung heroes.

I have always admired Dempsey and Donovan. The work rate and determination they display on the field is awesome. I have preferred Donovan for years, but this season I feel Dempsey has topped it.

I also admire Holden at Bolton (still injured?), an amazing player we will see more off.

Having said that, I think the latter is the one we might see in one of the top 4 clubs. United for one, could use a proper midfielder.

This year my mate joined our annual mini-league, knowing nothing about football. I helped him with his team and come game week 25, I'm sitting at #1, 10 points clear of second. Second is 100 clear of third. Guess who's second?

Keeping for a week but for the reason I dont want to take a hit this week in what I feel is going to be a low scoring week (and partly cos I've lost ground in 2nd in my mini-league and suffered 2 consecutive red arrows). Bale - 6/10 (Toon have a very solid defence; Spurs looked ineffective with their personnel against Liverpool)
Aguero - 5/10 (Less effective away; but against a untalented yet attacking Villa team with a suspect defence that should be overwhelmed by City; pens)
Sess - 5/10 (OOP playing as striker; Arsenal defence is close to full strength again; anticipate tight game)
RVP - 6/10 (Arsenal's dominant goal threat; away to a very strong Sunderland defence that has kept out City in a run of 4 CS in 6 games, including the last 3)
Silva - 6/10 (Anticipate he will help City dominate the poor Villa midfield and could have a couple of assists to either striker)
Ba - 6/10 (Toon's proven goal threat; away to a much improved Spurs defence - but not exactly a fortress - 5 CS in 12 home games)
Dempsey - 8/10 (OOP playing as striker; Fulham's dominant goal threat; not even Zamora anymore for competition; Fulham have scored 10 goals in the last 5 home games; Stoke only have 1 CS in the last 4 away games and that was against Liverpool)

I'd about agree with those rankings. Aguero possibly lower (1 away goal since week 6 is pretty abysmal) RVP and Bale perhaps a touch higher seeing as they are such points scoring behmouths.

      What about Siggs?

Siggy - 6/10 (Very much in form with 1 goal and 3 assists in the last 4 games; on FKs and corners; but serious attacking competition from Sinclair and Dyer who I reckon play higher up the pitch; home to a Norwich defence that has significantly improved of late with 2 CS - including 1 against Chelsea - in the last 4 games)

Nice analysis, but I can't believe you've rated ba and bale the same when Tottenham haven't lost since the beginning of September at WHL, it has to be Bale for me.

They certainly have an extremely impressive points record, but the Spurs goals output is more relevant for Bale and they have somewhat slowed on that score - 8 goals in the last 5 games - plus they're playing a very decent defence. Toon have scored 10 goals in the last 5 games including 3 against United and 2 away to Fulham - I'd say Ba's potential is about equal.

Toon may have scored 10 in their last 5, but they've let in 14 goals in their last 5 games away. No tiote and cabaye as well.

Yep they've definitely been leaky away from home with 12 in 5 away, which in fact was why I temporarily gave up on their defence a few GWs back, but paradoxically they've been either conceding big or churning out the CS. The Norwich defeat they had the infamous Perch at CB, which won't be the case this GW, the Fulham defeat obviously was a poor defensive performance.

No Tiote or Cabaye, but they do have Papiss Cisse, and they looked very good last match.

out of 10, dempsey 8, sessegnon 5, bale 5, rvp 4, aguero 3, silva 2, ba 2. the numbers are more in relationship with each other rather than just an isolated rating for each.

Guess you mean without the Newcastle game. Yup - Fulham have been offensively wild this season - drawn blanks some games, yet won 5-2 and 6-0 as well, showing there's definitely some potential there. Until the last match (City) they'd scored in 6 games in a row which I think shows they're beginning to find some consistency in attack. Defence is erratic as hell though.

I think we can take no Zamora in both positive and negative ways.

      Positive: Dempsey is automatically OOP.
Negative : Zamora played good part in Dempsey's good run. Lack of his service now.

for me the most significant thing about rvp playing the full 90 v blackburn was not that it gave him more time to get us fantasy points, it was that imo wenger told us rvp will start against sunderland. why would you not take rvp off at half time or 60mins in an already won match (the game was over at half time, 3-1 up and a man up) if he needed some rest? to play him that second half then rest him in a much tougher game at sunderland seems very bizarre

    1) Ship Huth out for Richards and take a 4 pt hit to get Ba next week?
    2) Keep Huth and take the 0.2m price fall (likely) on the chin? (Poor fixtures after his ban)
    3) Don't bother with Ba
    4) Other?

    Cheers

My feeling is that you need Ba and Richards sooner rather than later. Somehow, by whatever means, get them both in this week. You may well be priced out of the market next week.

It's ok, I can do Huth --> Richards this week then Graham --> Ba & Baines --> £6.1m defender. Don't think I want Ba away to Spurs ....

So I can afford Ba to go up to 8m and still bring in a good defender for Baines next week.

Cheers though - 4 pt hit next week it is.

I'd be leaning towards 1 or 2.. but 1 will depend on whether you can afford Ba after he's continued his meteoric price rise.

I'm in a similar dilemma.. wanted a one-week punt on Yakubu and then Ba next week, but since there's such a big gap between GW 25 and 26, and since I don't generally do early transfers, Ba could cost in excess of 8m by then and I'll be priced out.

£0.3m rise max per week so I can afford him at 8m and get a £5.8m defender in for Baines ... might just do that, cheers

Need to sell Valencia to fund my Keane to Ba move, want to do it this week rather than next or I'll be priced out.

Who's the best midfield option for 6.4 or less? Already have McClean. Other strikers are RVP and Aguero. Maybe Ox-Chamberlain?

Just a little concerned Ox might be the subject of rotation with FA Cup, Champs league coming up and the return of Gervinho ... he's cheap enough as a 5th midfielder though for some teams so he could be a good option if htat's the case --> Worse players to have than McClean coming off your bench.

yep, it's no coincidence that Villa seem to be playing a bit more attacking and he's scoring goals. He won't often get more than 6 points but he's generally reliable.

A nice alternative to the epically boring RVP Aguero Ba combo.

Definitely, take a punt, don't just play it safe and copy everyone else, these pages of comments are getting hideously predictable when it comes to strikers.

RVP, fair enough, you can't go without him, but Aguero has been in poor form and although he scored last time out he still needed a penalty. We don't know how Ba will do alongside Papiss Cisse but many people are saying Cisse is the more advanced when they play together for Senegal.

Bent is a differential and could be a hugely effective one at that if you call it right.

the point with them being crap is that now if the NEW team players see Cisse ahead they can pass without fear to him as well, knowing he's capable of scoring, something which wasn't there with Best and Amoebi, but, I agree Ba's point returns should improve only with Cisse.

You are sort of contracting yourself there.
But anyway, I still don't see it, the whole 'passing to him without fear' thing, I wasn't talking about how Cisse affects Newcastle or how poor Best/Ameobi are, I was talking about the fact that Ba played the same role in Newcastle this season as he does w/Cisse at Senegal.
