FA Cup wins for Premier League sides are achieved in markedly different ways as the Gameweek 31 schedule remains threadbare.

Chelsea and Leicester City gave Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers two more compelling reasons to perhaps delay the Free Hit chip by confirming their absence from Gameweek 31.

Had the Blues lost at home to Hull City and Leicester done likewise against Sheffield United in last night’s FA Cup fifth round ties, then Gameweek 31 would have been boosted by an additional two fixtures.

As it was, both top-flight teams progressed to the quarter-finals, to be played on the weekend of March 17, meaning their league matches on that date will now have to be rescheduled.

The Blues were due to travel to Burnley, while the Foxes would have entertained Arsenal.

We’ll have a far clearer idea as to the final make-up of Gameweek 31 once today’s four cup ties are played, but it’s already starting to look like a particularly light weekend of Premier League action.

Only two matches are already certain to go ahead – Stoke City v Everton and Liverpool v Watford.

They will be joined by the losers of this evening’s tie between Huddersfield and Man United.

If that’s the Terriers, they’ll entertain Crystal Palace in Gameweek 31, while United will travel to West Ham should they bow out of the cup.

There had been a strong case for managers to employ their Free Hit chip to cope with Gameweek 31’s fractured schedule.

But exploiting the benefits of the chip on a Gameweek involving just three matches would be a tricky proposition; potentially there will be very few effective differentials at our disposal.

And as the FA Cup quarter-finals could very well involve exclusively Premier League teams, that will also have an impact on Gameweek 35’s fixtures when the semi-finals are due to be played. That would make using the Free Hit chip at that point all the more attractive.

Willian the Conqueror

Last night’s victories couldn’t have been more different.

Chelsea were home and hosed by half-time, four goals to the good thanks to a brace from Willian and one each for Pedro and Olivier Giroud, the latter scoring his first for his new club.

Assists came from Cesc Fabregas, Emerson and two from Giroud, while any thoughts of an unlikely Hull comeback after the break were quickly snuffed out when Willy Caballero saved a penalty.

While Willian’s clinical finishing will have turned heads, the biggest news for Fantasy managers arrived in Antonio Conte’s post-match press conference. The Chelsea boss confirmed that he expects Marcos Alonso to return from an ankle sprain to face Barcelona in midweek.

Alonso is the most sold asset player of Gameweek 28, with over 112,000 moving him out. His remaining owners may now look to hold the top-scoring defending, though investing in Chelsea assets at present is an unattractive proposition.

Conte’s men will face both Manchester sides – and both away – over the next two Gameweeks, with a visit from Spurs looming in Gameweek 32.

The Gameweek 31 blank therefore means they’ll play three of the top five over their next four matches, with two Champions League Round of 16 clashes with Barcelona to add into the mix as well.

Vardy strikes again

Leicester fielded a strong side against Championship promotion-chasers Sheffield United but had to wait until the 66th minute to break the deadlock.

Jamie Vardy scored what turned out to be the winner, set up by the returning Riyad Mahrez, who came out to boos but left the pitch to a standing ovation.

Vardy has now notched in five successive matches in all competitions and has picked up 55,000 new owners ahead of Gameweek 28. Only Oumar Niasse and Roberto Firmino have enjoyed more transfer interest.

Meanwhile, Fantasy managers will have welcomed Ben Chilwell’s presence at left-back for the Foxes. He ousted Christian Fuchs to provide another hint at the pecking order. Club skipper Wes Morgan also returned to the teamsheet, as Aleksandar Dragovic dropped out of the squad.

Leicester’s schedule is far more obliging than Chelsea’s.

A visit from Arsenal and a trip to Spurs are the only blots on an otherwise agreeable fixture landscape all the way through to the end of the season.

But with their Premier League status in no major doubt, coach Claude Puel picked a very strong team last night to signal his intention to make the FA Cup a priority.

That could eventually lead to squad rotation in the league, although their schedule, for now, is sufficiently well-spaced to make that an issue for the longer term, particularly if they make the cup semi-finals.

The whole picture will be a lot clearer following today’s ties and tonight’s quarter-final draw. But for now, Gameweek 31 looks to be a case of make do and mend for most FPL managers.

For further reference, we’ve written two articles providing a detailed look at the FA Cup implications for Fantasy managers.

Part One is available here, while Part Two can be found here.

If Man City draw with Wigan, next week’s fixture at Arse is likely to be rescheduled.

So there will be an Arsenal away fixture in there, if it happens.

He always overperforms his xG because he's a class player. I only think his stats are low because Leicester don't create a huge amount. Vardy is fairly clinical as well which helps his xA overperformed.

Given most TC were either used in first few weeks, or on GW22 Kane for only 9 points, I’m surprised to see so few of the other chips used. To be in top 10k I'd have thought chips were used to propel them there.

No, just experienced players at this point in the season. Early on it'll be primarily chip users for sure. Remember, chips tend to add 10-30 points to a single GW score. Not enough to put you in top 10k on use of chips alone

If you don’t HAVE to get rid of Aguero then why would you?

If you can have Kane Kun and Salah surely that’s the optimum...

Seems to be a rush to Dump Kun ahead of Arsenal who can’t defend, Chelsea who have conceded a hat full of goals away from home and Stoke.... STOKE!

I have Firmino, Wilson & Kun.

To bring in Kane, Aguero is the only option really. Wilson would mean 2 other changes to team. Firmino has GW31, in form and has favourable fixtures.

No doubt Aguero can score in his next few games, but his ceiling over next 3 games is a lot lower than Kane’s.

Struggling to pull the trigger though. A draw v Wigan will make life easier.

i want to move him. Have Salah, Kane & Haz as well.
Logic for me is 1. fixtures. lots, next few away,
      2. game time. Jesus back in contention would have to indicate game time will become reduced like before. If Jesus fit last week then Kun probably isn't on the pitch for his last 2 goals. Changes his score etc. considerably.
      3. Salah double scores still around 1 in 2 compared to Aguero's 1 every 4/5 games.
      4. think I want to have the option to move back 3-4-3.

Plenty of logic if it’s for bobby.

1 fixtures massively favor Liverpool and they don’t blank in 31.

2 frees ups funds to invest elsewhere.

3 he won’t get the armband in the next 2 games.

4 wildcards will be active in 32 so everyone can get him back in.

5 Jesus is back training so minutes may be shared.

We all know kun can score v anyone but I feel firmino is a calculated risk woth taking

These players need to be sorted out, but which 2 should I fix first?

    Alonso

    Kun (Jesus is back)

    Lingard

Hmmm, probably gonna give him the Arsenal game, then switch to Firmino 🙂 Sort out Lingard this GW, thats what im doing.

There are 8 GWs left and 4 chips to use. Does everyone else have a plan for theirs, or are they just making it up as they go along, like me?

Rough plan, buy basically making it up as I go along. Can't plan without knowing all the fixtures.

yep...prepare not for Blanks in GW31 to field 8/9 players.
GW33 - Wildcard and pick players who have doubles in GW34 and aGW37
      GW34 - Bench Boost
GW35 - Free Hit for any blank fixtures
GW37 - Triple captain DGW player

I'm waiting till Monday night. Then I will know how I'm going to use everything. May even Wildcard this week as I'm not so sure you HAVE to wait until after GW31.

If you can use free transfers to field 8 or 9 players in GW31 then I would wait. Could dump City/Chelsea players for hard fixtures and their blank and then get them back in when fixtures are better

I have thought about it but my team is a bit of a mess at the moment. I would field about 8/9 players for 31 and still have a lot of DGW players for 34. You mention City as well but by the time their fixtures have got better, they would have probably won the league and could still be in the CL. That means they will rotate more. Idk, I'm waiting until Monday as I said though.

Would this defense be too weak? Thoughts on whole team appreciated:

    Adrian
    Jones | Lowton | Simpson
    Salah | Sterling | Hazard | Milivojevic
    Kane | Aguero | Vardy

    Elliot | T.Carroll | Dummett | Kelly

You can't say just because of 3 bad games he will leave.

It is not because of the bad games, it is because of Mourinho

Any club hopes for stability and with Mourinho's problems with star players they can't both stay at the same place, one has to leave

Heaviest slider on a track that suits heavier athletes. That's why sled technology and picking the right athlete for the track is so important for skeleton.

Mawson owners what are you doing? Swapping for another Swansea defender or going somewhere else?

Was planning Alonso out so this is a really annoying curveball

    (If confirmed proper injury obviously)
