Though for many fans the idea of the set-piece may conjure up images of Tony Pulis or convoluted chalkboard diagrams, such situations have long been considered golden opportunities within the realm of football analytics.

Set-plays tend to produce a surprisingly high volume of a side’s goals, accounting for between 25% and 35% of an average team’s tally across the major European leagues. The current Premier League season has been no exception to this rule, with 27.2% of all goals to date having come as a direct result of a set-piece.

Teams who can best profit from these situations therefore earn a meaningful advantage over their opposition. Perhaps the most famous example of this in recent history are FC Midtjylland, whose dedication towards dead-ball routines brought the Danish underdogs 23 set-piece goals en route to their first-ever league title in 2015.

Analysing sides – and players – who thrive in this oft-overlooked aspect of the game may help to identify some hidden gems among the FPL player pool as we enter the final Gameweeks of the campaign.

Indeed, with two (yet-to-be-scheduled) double Gameweeks between now and the end of the season, scouting for underpriced players who boast a goal threat from such scenarios could prove additionally vital as we look to supplement our core players with high-upside options.

This week’s Technical Area will look to break down the league’s premium set-piece threats, in the hope of outlining some key targets ahead of the busy upcoming run-in.

Great! My two arsenal assets scored, their differentials, have an insane run in and all I can think of is who I should replace them with.

What about Son, Sterling & DCL -> La Parra, Doucoure & Auba. (-4)

This is for differential and i think nobody of Son, Sterling & DCL will play. Doucoure has done well in Big games and Auba can outscore Kane as a Captain. Am i crazy or What do you think?

    A) Depoitre, KDB, VVD > Firmino,Schindler, Stanislas -4
    B) Depoitre, Alonso > Schindler, Mounie/King/Benteke
    C) Alonso, Ogbonna > 2 def (11.5m) and play depoitre as second striker

Chelsea didn't play well v CP in their last few games but they will be facing completely different opposition on Saturday. As many as 6 players who played for CP in their last game may not be involved at all. I can smell a positive reaction by the Chelsea troops.

I just had a CCCCrazy thought. What if you could chose to play a player out of position... but only further up the field.

For example. I would prefer VLP over Niasse (the only reason I thought of this). VLP would only receive a forwards points (no clean sheet bonus, 4 points rather than 5 for a goal yada yada yada). Bonus points... hmm. HMM. I guess the only time you'd use this would be midfield > forward. Like I said, crazy. Bye.

    Arsenal goalkeeping conspiracy theory:

Is Ospina the first choice keeper at Arsenal these days?

He plays in all the important competitions for Arsenal; FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League. They're the ones they have/had a chance of winning.

Cech only gets runs in the premier league where they don't have a chance of achieving anything.

    1. Sadio
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Would you keep Choupo-Moting or use one of 2 free transfers to get in Van La Parra for next 2 and get Shaqiri in next week for Eriksen or Mahrez in 31 before WC ( when will probably get Eriksen and Mahrez back)

Yes to van La Parra this week.

Though most may disagree, personally not overly keen on Shaqiri for next gameweek if you haven't already got him in your squad. Perhaps, look at another GW31 player instead.
