The Digest – Gameweek 31

We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

In a strange way, my WC pretty much boils down to Alonso (and a few other defence upgrades) v Vardy.

Some great enabling defenders out there, allowing a pretty stellar front line. Can anyone tell me how nailed the likes of van der Hoorn, and Lowton are? I'm also thinking about Morgan. Am I missing any other cheapies with DGW and or good fixtures?

Fernandez and Naughton are safer than vdH for sure.

Individual from Who Got the Assist prefers Tarkowski for nailedness and BPS baseline (I kind of see where he's coming from, no competition whilst Lowton has Beardsley), but I think Lowton is a fairly safe option and first choice.

      Morgan is great.

Stephens and Dunk and Dummett have poor fixtures but are nonetheless (albeit poor) options (especially if the bench boost gameweek does not favour Swansea or Burnley defenders).

With big names like Mark and Andy wildcarding early, it's been so hard to be patient and wait for solid information.

If Jarvish's brilliant hot topic turns out to be turn, I'll have little sympathy for those who scrambled after the £0.1m's. Points not pounds, as Jonty always says.

I'm still a little slow on the uptake, have read and re-read Jarvish's post, and Ben Crellin's reply, but still think WCing now will allow me to set my team up for the rest of the season regardless when the doubles fall. Sure it would be nice to have more info now, but we'll get that info pretty soon no?

It's been a lonely place on here recently for those who are being patient and wildcarding in 33. Everyone keeps banging on about their Wildcard team and for those of us who haven't activated it, it is like a form of exclusion.

Does it matter though? Chip in, take some ideas. Or just take a break. I'm sure plenty will be WCing GW33 and those who've already wildcarded will be more than happy to offer any advice/suggestions for what they wish they'd done. There were 3 different IBs earlier in the year with people WCing in each one...

          ^This.

A lay person would think the community dont do patience but that's the nature of the best. A 2-week, non-competitive international break tho, with unreliable price increase info due to WCs, on the back of fielding 7 players (86) last BGW with all chips intact and a mini-league deficit cut by 30 pts due to rival's FH and no idea of DGWs yet is testing every patient nerve in me.

          It's gonna be a rollercoaster...

I still think my WC32 team will be way stronger than me not playing it - the price profits are a bonus if anything. When the DGWs are exactly doesn't really change a lot does it? If anything I may just delay my bench boost to GW37 if that's a larger DGW.

Any thoughts on this wildcard team?

    De Gea, Fabianski
    Monreal, Christensen, Robertson, Tarkowski, Lowton/Morgan
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Mahrez, King
    Aubameyang, Firmino, Vardy

I'm aware Liverpool don't have any doubles but considering their fixtures are so good I still think Robertson and Firmino are good value for their price.

Also seeing a lot of Willian and Lukaku in wildcard teams on here but I'm worried that Willian isn't nailed and Lukaku is still very expensive compared to both Firmino and Vardy.

Is Mahrez and Vardy too much Leicester coverage?

Yeah Auba is locked in for me. I toyed with losing Firmino for Lukaku but can't really justify it considering Firmino has outscored him quite significantly and is so much cheaper. Also why I don't want to lose Firmino for Vardy either.

Yeah locked in for me as well 🙂
Really cannot justify Lukaku, even if he is a placeholder for Kane, who i won't be bringing back in anyway, guy is a let down, and after an injury like that, not like he's gonna come back a goal scoring machine.

Here's where i'm at on WC.

            DDG
            Otamendi - Alonso - Robertson
            Willian - Salah - D.Silva - Mahrez - Son
            Auba - Firmino
            _________________________________
Pope: Barnes, Morgan, vand der Hoorn

May get rid of Silva and do Barnes to Vardy and a 4.5 mid, also don't knowif to lose Otamendi or not.

Looks good - I'm toying with Willian and Murrary/Ayew/Barnes over Vardy and King but think I prefer the Vardy option for now.

Yeah he's actually currently in my team and I'm hesitant about losing him. Would essentially come down to a choice between:

        Alonso and Morgan

        OR

        Christensen and Monreal

Alway better having Alonso. If you have enough to afford Maguire over morgan if not Alonso Morgan is still a good call.

It’s willian v Pedro for selection right now, I think they’ll play evenly between them.

Bypassing Jarvis's in-depth hot topic and presuming most the fixtures go where expected, what's the plan for those have already used their FH?

Has anyone figured this out. Obviously 35 is a minefield to navigate whilst maximising 34 and 37.

    1. WesMantooth

With crellin schedule: WC: Ederson 2Arsenal(Auba+?), Salah, Firmino, Robertson, Kenedy, 2SWA-NUFC-Burnley defensive assets, The rest: other dgweekers.
      - BB34 (13 dgweekers)
      - Make 2 transfers in 35 on players with game in 35. One of them should also have a double in 37 (bou and hud). gives 11 players gw35
      - Use the next 2 fts and maybe a hit to get a total of 10-11 dgweekers for 37 and use TC.

Not my situation so havent gone in depth, mut maybe something like that?

Assumin you've used the TC but got got all your other chips to play.
Also assuming the fixtures land like Jarvish wrote about today, with Man City and Arsenal playing in 37.

Would'nt activating WC now be most sensible thing to do? Then FH 34 and BB 37?

    - You'd be able to smash 32 and 33
    - Get the meanest FH in 34 with whomever you fancy. Kane, Hazard, Lukaku/Sanchez. whoever tickles you the most, just decimate 3 benchslots and bring in your chosen ones
    - Easy to plan build a team in 32 that has games in 35. wont get as many pounds on the field as those who FH, but you'll still have a great team comared to everyone else.
    - 36 should look good
    - The team from 32 prob consisted of 12dgw players, meaning 14-15 dgweekers is easily obtained for 37.
    - 38 Should look good

    Thoughts?

        Might very well be!

I've allways had my eye on 37 for the FH based on his predicted sched, and he's also been very vocal on his intent to go that route if the fixtures land that way. Have'nt heard what his strategy is if permutations lands more in the way of Jarvish's post, but I believe almost everyone who's burned their TC but have the other chips should be looking at this strategy 🙂

    First WC draft, thoughts?

It will probably be changed a bit when we have all the information about the DGWs, but I think it is an ok team to start of with at least.

    DDG - Fabianski
    Alonso - Davies - Mustafi - Lowton - Morgan
    Salah - Marhez - Son - Arnautovic - Gross
    Aubameyang - Vardy - Ayew

    ITB: 0.4m

Davies is a bit of a risk. And, for me, Alonso takes too much money out of midfield. Use it to upgrade gross or arnie

Any suggestions for the midfield upgrade? I am struggling to find players I would want. For me, Alonso is a midfielder.

And regarding Davies I tend to agree. He might become for example Bailly or Sánchez/Vertonghen.

Willian is the definition of a rotation risk in DGWs.

Staying away from City assets with the amount of games they have coming up. I am too afraid of rotation when they will be focusing on CL after the PL title has been secured.

I struggle to see many midfield options that are not in the premium range, and I am not sure I see the value there. In general I feel that there could be quite a bit of value in the premium defenders going into the later stages of the season as they tend to be rotated the least.
