Earlier in the week, our recent series of Monitor members’ articles on Wildcard ran the rule over both Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku, the two most bought forwards ahead of Gameweek 32.

Next up in our assessment is Riyad Mahrez, the second most bought midfielder ahead of Leicester City’s expected pair of Double Gameweeks.

Despite finding himself out of favour in the early months – due to a lofty 8.5 opening price tag and disappointing previous season – the Algerian has turned back the clock to rediscover the heights of his dominant 2015/16 campaign.

Now sitting fourth among midfielders in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) with 161 points, Mahrez has proven himself to once again represent a consistent top-end choice. Meanwhile, double-digit hauls in successive Gameweeks underpin the Algerian’s explosive potential as a differential captaincy option for managers willing to swim against the tide.

With an incredibly obliging run to end the season – including two Double Gameweeks and a slew of favourable matchups (Leicester’s next six fixtures will match them against Brighton, Newcastle, Burnley, Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham) – the winger will be a staple among Wildcard squads.

    Evening all.

Any other managers around who have wildcard still to play and have used free hit?

My team is currently looking pretty good for next couple of GWs before the double, a couple of hits along the way and I’ll have 8 DGW players plus triple captain (tbc) for 34, 8 players for 35 then WC 36 before BB in 37 when most of the DGW fixtures are. Happy to go without Brighton, Bournemouth, Southampton players even in a DGW.

Does this sound like a reasonable strategy?

Only annoyance is I’ve got hazard at the moment which is a bit annoying in a way as tying up a lot of cash but switching to Willian seems so sideways.

I see it that way: fixtures help to those with no fh. If you fh in gw31 Iam sure your team looking good. With -8 hit highly likely field 11 players. Then WC in 35+ 2 ft all ok. Arsenal MC, New, Bur, Swans will give you 11 + 4 from bench and bb. Full squad

It seems perfect to WC, load up on players from these teams and use FH in 35. Strategy sorted.

Any reason for everyone’s wildcard teams neglecting Hazard? Based on form seems more likely to outscore Lukaku for example

Looking at hazard’s gw34 double, and his potential for huge scores, seems like people should be almost planning teams around him. Expensive sure, but Lukaku the popular pick could always be downgraded

        1. Rik Waller

Yeh he's certainly a viable alternative to Lukaku - and he's cheaper. The problem for me is that I want to have Auba for 2 GWs and trade him out in GW34. So Lukaku will have to come in for him as it'd be 2 transfers to get Haz in

It means you can fix your team if it needs fixing and you can maybe pick players up cheaper than they might be next week if you are going to get them anyway.

Its the link to the video. Look for EPL Show Episode 33 Part 1 and Part 2. Mark goes over the DGWs and their fixtures. They won't put any doubles on 38, can't do it on 35 so it will be 37 by logic.

Davies over Vertonghen and Gudmundsson over Groß and is my current WC squad. Feel Davies will play all PL games now Spurs out CL. Rise in cup. Gudmundsson for me only as I have no FH for week 35 otherwise would have been Groß

Maybe, but I feel I have to back Auba+Vardy.

Plus it makes use of the 2 FTs that will be lost otherwise, unless there's major injuries.

Maybe an Arsenal def, with Lowton covering rotation, would be safer but not as fun

Nice! Defender goals are the best feeling in FPL, especially low owned ones. That’s what I’m chasing. Having to use FT’s before 34 (If FH 35) has left a nice little opportunity.

                      Thoughts on this WC please.
                      Plan right now would be
                      Auba and Mustafi to
Lukaku and Christensen (if fit) in 34 for free with .2 spare for those moves.

                      DeGea Ryan

                      Alonso Bailly Mustafi Morgan Lowton

                      Salah Mahrez Son Willian Albrighton

                      Aubameyang Firminio Murray

Nah Vardy is a bridge too far. Cash won't stretch that far so had to go Murray. Ok but not great.

Only other plan is probably Salah and Firminio out for 37 Kane + someone else in and Salah back for 38.

Oh baby. First draft of the WC with 0.0 in the bank.
BB 34, FH 35 are the chips left.

                      DDG - McCarthy
                      Alonso - Morgan - Lowton - Dunk - Marriapa
                      Salah - Son - Willian - Mahrez - Matic
                      Lukaku - Aubameyang - Barnes

Plan would be to save FT and then move Auba --> Vardy and upgrade a defender like Marriapa for GW 34.

Aye. Vardy and Auba both have better fixtures in 32 + 33 than Lukaku so if you're planning a transfer in 34 then Lukaku in makes more sense.

Is it injury or McCarthy has take the place.

doubt it , finishing 4th or higher and qualifying for the champions league is probably more important for the owner , that been said Southampton & Burnley away probably won't be goalfests

Proving very difficult to get rid of Firmino maybe is club loyalty or the reason that I got him for 8.5m. Liverpool still have great fixtures and I remember the Spurs guys beating quite a few DGW players that week.

Letting go of Firmino was a tough one. I still think he will score big but the extra money (bought at 9.1m) I got plus Vardy's double double swayed it for me

Vardy is a very tempting pick. Good fixtures coming up. Might even double up with Mahrez.

Vardy already risen, so may as well wait it out now

Two WC drafts I'm considering, and a plan for the run-in, assuming gw37 is as listed in previous FFS article. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1N3KpBpWl8-CghqhWn9ImiZva1bjBoqBaEjMT9NKMMAI/edit?usp=sharing

Now I have it laid out, I'm leaning toward 2, but feedback always welcome. Thanks in advance for taking the time to peruse.

Primary differences: two defs and two fwds.

Why BB in 34 with Swans players? They double in 37

It's based on assumptions on my part, really. If Kane's back, I like him better as TC in gw37.

But, the Swans players (or lack thereof) are why I'm leaning toward option 2.

Fab is in option 2 though too. Surely Ryan better for B.B. 34?

No argument. I should have mentioned I don't have my FH, so I'm trying to account for gw35. And taking a hit to bring in a keeper doesn't seem wise. Then again, I went without a GK in 31, so... dammit.

                                        Yeah, you're right.

Ah I see. Fab in 35 is basically no keeper anyway tbh

WC is active but no TC chip left - is BB in 34 still worth it? I just can’t see the likes of Ryan, Lowton & Gross getting hauls. But preparing for a BB in 37 feels so far away (& with Kane potentially back, how could you even afford a decent bench?)

                                Current BB 34 squad.

                                De Gea, Ryan

Alonso, Bailly(or Vert), Lowton, Morgan, Christensen

                                Willian, Son, Gross, Salah, Mahrez

                                Lukaku, Vardy, Wood

i'll be BBing in 34 , it seems as good a time as any to me , Kane's recent injury is a blessing in disguise as i should have plenty of cash to get 15 decent payers out with hopefully about half of them playing twice

Are we all overestimating Son a bit here? I have serious doubt he will play both games in 34

I agree and Son has tough fixtures. Chelsea have to beat Spurs to have a chance for CL. Cant see them giving up goals in that game.

I have him atm but not sure what I will do with him, if he doesn't play the 2 games in 34, he's useless to have. Currently have Vardy and Son, but might go with Stanislas + Lukaku. Read somewhere that they were doing everything to get Kane fit for Chelsea, so he'll def be fit for gw34. In that case it would be easier to do Auba to Kane in 34 and go with Lukaku Kane up top.

I have seen Kane play injured not as effective. One good knock in the Chelsea game and he is gone for the season. Believe me he will get one. Game means too much

They won't play him unless he is close to being 100% ready, top 4 race is still on, can't afford to lose him for a longer time period. But the odds of betting that he will pick up a knock in that game are slim though, looks very likely he will be fit for gw34

                                    A) Bailly + [4.5 MID]
                                    B) Smalling/Jones + Gudmundsson

If A, which MID would you go for? Also, just to note, the MID is likely to be benched most weeks (DGW otherwise).
