Ryan Taylor expects to be available for Newcastle’s game with Wolves. Ryan Giggs misses out for Man United tonight with an ankle problem. Arsenal assess the knee injury that forced Laurent Koscielny off in Milan last night, Roberto Mancini urges Mario Balotelli to keep calm, while Martin O’Neill is hopeful of a return to action for Lee Cattermole in this weekend’s FA Cup Fifth Round action:

Ryan Taylor has earmarked a return to full training on Monday and is confident of being available for Newcastle’s Gameweek 26 home clash with Wolves next weekend. Taylor has been speaking to Newcastle’s official website, with regards to his comeback from an ankle problem. He revealed he has been working with the club’s physio for the last few days and is stepping up his recovery, going on to say:

If we had a game this weekend then I might have been touch and go, but this way I can concentrate on next week now and I know I can be right. So it’s nice for me, whereas for some players that might not be the case. I don’t feel like I have to rush back.

Sir Alex Ferguson explained the reasoning behind his decision to omit three of his first-team squad for tonight’s Europa League clash with Ajax. Patrice Evra is rested for the trip to Amsterdam, after what his manager described as an “emotional weekend”, while both Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov are out with injuries. Giggs picked up an ankle problem in Saturday’s win over Liverpool, while Berbatov suffered a knock in training. Ferguson revealed Berbatov’s problem is the least significant of the pair- the Bulgarian could have played but it was decided not to risk him.

Roberto Mancini has refuted the suggestions made by Carlos Tevez in a recent Fox Sports interview. The Argentine was expected to apologise for his antics over the last few months but instead took the opportunity to allege he was treated “like a dog” by his manager. Mancini is keen to draw a line under the saga, with his comments far from indicating Tevez will be welcomed back into the first-team:

I totally disagree with Carlos, what he said, because I have never treated him badly. Maybe it is the opposite, I treated him too well, always. This is the last question I answer (on this) in the next three months. I don’t want to talk any more.

Mancini focused instead on the importance of Mario Balotelli. The forward has now served his four-match domestic suspension for a stamp on Scott Parker and his manager has revealed he has urged his compatriot to keep his cool, with Balotelli set to be a key player for City over the remainder of the season:

Mario is an important player for us, he has a good quality. He can play with Edin (Dzeko), with Sergio (Agüero). I think if his head will be OK in the next two months, he will be an important player. It’s difficult to find a good definition for him. We know that Mario is a fantastic player. He’s young, sometimes he will do some mistakes but for this reason, if he can keep his composure for the next months, he will be an important player for us, in the Europa League and the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers is hoping to have Joe Allen and Kemy Agustien available for the trip to Stoke. Both missed the home defeat to Norwich with hamstring and ankle problems respectively, with Allen “expected“ to make the Britannia showdown. Rodgers also revealed Josh McEachran is lacking in match fitness. The on-loan Chelsea midfielder was granted a start against the Canaries due to the aforementioned injuries but was subbed off just after the hour mark, tiring as the match progressed.

Arsenal are assessing the knee problem picked up by Laurent Koscielny in last night’s Champions League hammering in Milan. With Per Mertesacker ruled out for at least a month with an ankle injury, any absence for Koscielny will present Arsene Wenger with real selection issues ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Sunderland. With Kieran Gibbs now fully recovered after a hernia operation, Thomas Vermaelen was moved back into the heart of the back-four in the 4-0 rout and is likely to be partnered with Johan Djourou for the Black Cats showdown if Koscielny fails to make it.

Bolton have suffered an injury setback, with the news that Tyrone Mears is set to be sidelined for several weeks. The right-back needs a screw replaced on his previously-fractured leg, having suffered discomfort since returning to action in Gameweek 24. Kevin Davies will miss this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Millwall due to a knee injury, though Coyle is still hopeful his skipper will be fit for next Saturday’s trip to Chelsea. The Trotters boss also revealed Marcos Alonso has returned to full training, though may require a couple of reserves games before making a first-team return. In terms of long-term injuries, Coyle also revealed Chung-Yong Lee could return to training in a couple of weeks, while no timescale has been put on Stuart Holden’s comeback, with the midfielder still over in the US as he attempts to step up his return from a serious knee injury.

Martin O’Neill is hoping Lee Cattermole will be available for this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Arsenal. The Sunderland skipper has missed the last three Gameweeks due to a hamstring problem but has returned to training over the last couple of days. The Black Cats boss also revealed Nicklas Bendtner has resumed training after being sidelined with facial injuries, though the on-loan striker is, of course, unavailable this weekend due to the terms of his loan deal. David Vaughan is also making good progress from an ankle injury, while Matthew Kilgallon is edging towards a return at the back.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

We have the same squad apart from i have Williamson instead of Simpson, lol. I'm benching Sess but was considering starting him instead of Bale (!). I've got C on Aguero too, so looks good to me. Are you getting Rooney in for Aguero after GW 28? cheers

It's simply a fun way to divide up the teams. It's just a head to head based on your FFL score (-4 for 'away' ties)

That's it really. A bit of a group stage then knockout.

        It's all here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aul0PglyD-ESdHdYY3JWMllFdmVQZ2JZdzd1dEtQMXc#gid=2

It's just a way of allocating you into a group with other teams (and a clever seeding system) - the actual team you have makes no difference other than that.

your FPL team gets you all the points and everything, the allotted team is merely to see which group you are in with what other players. For example, i am Otelul Galati and will compete against the FPL teams of the managers of United, Benfica and Basel. Hope that helps 🙂

Hi guys, I am really nervous about going into the weekend without Aguero and Ba cover. But given my mini-league opponents all have them and I am chasing a lead, I am considering:
    Huth to Tawio
    Dempsey to Moses
    Dzeko to Rooney
    Fletcher to Cisse
For an 8 point hit (or potentially just the first three for a four point hit) - am I crazy?

Opinions on second expensive defender to company Kompany.

    a) G Johnson (best points per game + dgw on the way)
    b) Vermaelen
    c) Baines
    d) Waste transfers to mix 2 or 3 of these based on fixtures.
    e) another

Ps. what about Lescott? Toure affecting his minutes I’m afraid..

Why do people keep referring to AC Milan as an ageing side? It just sounds lazy and shows a lack of knowledge of their current side. The back four looks like this; Abate – 25, Thiago Silva – 27, Mexes – 29, Antonini – 29.

Apart from the GK Abbiati, Van Bommel & Seedorf the starting XI is under 30.

And this obsession with a players age or a squads average age is just number crunching and statistics on a piece of paper (It’s not Football Manager). Every individual ages differently and 30+ cannot be seen as a negative when assembling a side. A couple of older heads like Van Bommel are exactly what Arsenal need in their team. Professionals who know what it means to win trophies and see out matches, to pass on that knowledge and guidance to the inexperienced players in order to compete on the big stage against the best sides.

7 years without a trophy! Arsene is discrediting alot of his previous work with his refusal to recognise what needs to be done at Arsenal. The club are going backwards. It’s stubbornness bordering on self destruction and he has to be held accountable. RVP will be leaving next in search of a club who are competing for medals. Will Arsenal just bank the money and Wenger refuse to spend the money correctly and responsibly? Add to that Arsenal’s incapability of attracting the best players in Europe due to their wage structure.

I would rather have a 34 year old Van Bommel or a 35 year old Seedorf than Theo Walcott any day of the week. Yet again found a place to hide on a big occassion yet he springs to life in a 7-1 home win against one of the worst teams in the league. He doesn’t deserve to wear an Arsenal shirt.

Well technically all teams have an ageing side, but when players are the wrong side of 28 or so it counts as ‘aging’ in a bad way, whereas below that the side are just ‘maturing’

Arsenal got shown up yesterday, the service to RVP from midfield wasn’t there. He is world class, the rest of the team isn’t. They have some good players, but need a bit more quality, and solidity at the back.

Milan have shed a few of their aging players since they had Beckham on loan and he was surrounded by players his own age, you’re right. And Scholes and Giggs have shown at aging quality players can continue at a top level if they adapt their game.

We want to win this competition and besides, if we win by 3 tonight, we'll blood more youth next week. Also, tonight is key for Jones, Fabio, Nani and Cleverley (hallelujah) to return from injury and get some match fitness and sharpness in them. 🙂

Good riddance (time of your life) - green day
      The scientist - coldplay
      Wonderwall - oasis

Completely depends what your taste in music is though. I got bored with an acoustic and got an electric too as I like Nirvana, Deftones, Queens of the stone age, etc. That's the key to learning guitar imo, learn songs you really like, not just the typical ones you're sort of supposed to learn.

There has been a lot of in depth talk about certain teams lately and I'd like to mention Liverpool as I've not seen them debated (I might have missed it)

I'm a lifelong supporter and here are my thoughts on the current team etc.

The defence is excellent and while Glen Johnson has an annoying tendency to switch off at crucial times, he is pretty solid in the main and offers a fair bit going forward. Martin Kelly will probably surpass him in a year or two as he's more sound defensively and he puts a better ball into the box most of the time (I will come back to Liverpool's crossing ability later). I feel he's being groomed for a centre half position though and I'd like to see him given more games in the centre of defence, the only problem is that Carragher will come in when Srktel and Agger are being rested. Agger adds so much to the defence as he's the only centre half at the club who has the confidence/ability to bring the ball out from the back and the problem when Carra/Skrtel play together is that they play long diagonal balls that bypass the midfield. Enrique has been a great addition and while Valencia has put him in his place twice recently, I still think he was a great signing for the money paid and I wouldn't want anyone else signed. Then you have Coates, Robinson and Flannaghan who are all young and very bright prospects, so overall, the defence looks great and the only thing I'd possibly like is a top centre half signed to play alongside Agger.

The midfield is a mess. Kuyt is not good enough any more and should be sold while he still has some value. He does do well defensively against sides who are a threat down the left (Tottenham for instance) but going forward he offers little. Has he ever struck a ball cleanly or beaten the first man when crossing into the box? Downing has shown that he can't hack it at a big club and hides during matches. He gets the ball, runs to the defender, plays a five yard ball to a team mate and then runs into a marked area so he can't get it back. When he has been put into a position to deliver an end product, he has played terrible balls or had terrible efforts on goal. If they can get £10m for him in the summer then he should be sold. Adam isn't a first team player, for me. He's too much of a luxury as he isn't very mobile and leaves his partner exposed in the middle. He was pretty cheap compared to the other summer signings and I'd keep him as a squad player to play against the weaker sides who sit back and need unlocking.

Henderson has been slated a fair bit but I don't think he's done too badly. He's much better in the middle than on the right and I'd hope he carries on improving in the centre and form a partnership with Lucas when he's fit. He keeps it neat and tidy and while he hasn't done anything 'exploding' yet, I think he will get better as he gets more confident. He was pricey at £20m but he's young and has great potential. Lucas is a fantastic holding midfielder, in my opinion, and he has been a big miss since his injury. He breaks up the play, links the defence and the back four and carried Adam earlier in the season. Scott Parker is raved about but Lucas is at his level for my money.

Gerrard has been out injured and barely has any groin left after all the ops. There is no way he can play in a midfield 2 in the middle any more as he would leave his partner too exposed (like Adam) and I don't think he's got the legs to play off the striker either now. I think he could be utilised very effectively wide right though as he's the best crosser of the ball at the club and if Carroll is to be persevered with, then his delivery will be a huge asset. There is a feeling that he has too big an ego to play out there but I think Kenny could sit him down and explain that he'd be helping the club out more if he played out there.

Then you have Maxi, Shelvey, Spearing and Bellamy left really. Maxi isn't given enough game time for my money and I can't believe he hasn't been tried in the hole behind a striker or out on the right. His link up play with Suarez and Meireles at the end of last season was fantastic and it's just a shame that Kenny viewed Meireles as too lightweight and engineered his exit from Anfield. Spearing is ok to come in when there is an injury to Lucas but he is pretty limited. Shelvey has great potential and I'd like to see him go out on loan again to get some more first team experience. Bellamy is fantastic but needs to be nursed as his knees are bad and can only play one game a week.

There is no denying that Carroll has been a flop so far. Lack of fitness and poor service has been his downfall. His fitness is visibly improving though to be fair to him. I mentioned crossing earlier and Liverpool's has been abysmal this season. They get the ball out wide into great areas and put terrible balls in the box that rarely beat the first man. Adam, Downing, Kuyt, Johnson, Enrique, Bellamy...everyone in the team has been guilty of this and they must surely get extra practice on the training ground. Carroll will thrive off better service and if he doesn't fit in with the long term direction of the team, then he will at least retain more value if he starts banging in a few goals.

Suarez is a great player but he's let the club down recently. I'm hoping he feels he owes the manager after clearly letting him down and he will do his talking on the pitch. Performance wise, I feel he is too greedy and needs to pass more instead of constantly twisting and turning and shooting off balance. I'd give him and Carroll a run of games together and see if they can develop an understanding.

The strongest first XI would be -

    Reina
    Johnson/Skrtel/Agger/Enrique
    Gerrard/Lucas/Henderson/Bellamy
    Suarez/Carroll

I'd like to see a new striker signed in the summer, a real finisher, Soldado from Valencia, would be my choice, but I wouldn't be adverse to Torres coming back (if the price is right) as he clearly doesn't suit Chelsea's style of play and Suarez was bought as a partner for him after all. A creative midfielder and a centre half would be nice too, but obviously potential targets will be determined by what European competition they qualify for,

Finally, a word on the manager...I think he's done a decent job although he has made mistakes. I'd give him another year at least as I have genuine faith that he can get Liverpool back near the top again.

    Sorry for the long post.

He is, people saw how many FPL points he got last season and think he's a decent player, he really isn't. His passing is woeful, he gives the ball away way to much, he try ridiculous Hollywood balls that work about 1% of the time, he has no positional discipline either and he's too slow, so he can't really play either the Lucas or Alonso style role in midfield, he's a waste of a player in midfield.

I agree as well, also for a supposedly young team we are far too static, there's very little movement off the ball which inevitably leads to it being hoofed long or played into the box from deep crossing positions. You're right that Downing often hides from the ball but I also think Henderson and Carroll are sometimes guilty of this (maybe Carroll less so recently) and all need to step up if they want more than just a weekly wage.

not overlie surprised but a little to see how poor his general all round play is when thinking about the destruction he inflicted last season

Fed up hearing how good Nani is supposed to be. Flatters to deceive. Never seen a wide player as bad at crossing as him before. And his decision making is up there with Theo Walcott's.

If you signed up for the original competition but didn't make the grade (by ONE PLACE!!!!!!) do you have to sign up again, or is it automatic?
