West Ham and Man United play out a goalless draw that is a big help to some and bad news for others which, as it turns out, is a neat summary of Double Gameweek 37 in its entirety.

Jose Mourinho reacted to last Friday’s 1-0 loss at Brighton by making eight changes for the Hammers trip, with only David De Gea, Chris Smalling and Paul Pogba retaining their places.

A second straight attacking blank ensued, but the clean sheet helped many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers end Gameweek 37 with a final burst of points.

Chief among them were the 45.3% who own De Gea – United’s most popular player – and Smalling’s 11.7% backing.

The centre-half was the Gameweek’s most bought defender, with 133,000+ turning to him. Handed a fifteenth straight start last night, he’s produced six clean sheet and three goals in that period for a profitable late-season run.

De Gea, meanwhile, was the side’s most captained player (61,000+), and he claimed his 18th shutout of the season to secure the Golden Glove award.

The Spaniard was also United’s top scorer over the double, with nine points.

The match was a generally turgid affair, which goes much of the way to explaining the allocation of the bonus points – West Ham keeper Adrian took the maximum (he made six saves), while United defenders Luke Shaw and Phil Jones were awarded two and one point respectively.

That was bad news for Pogba’s owners.

The French international was second only to Raheem Sterling for Gameweek 37 transfers-in (147,000) among midfielders, but managed just four points across the two matches as United joined Swansea City as the only side to draw blanks in both their matches.

At least Pogba was on the pitch.

Mourinho’s sweeping changes returned Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to the bench, which was a big blow to the 68,000+ managers who had brought in the Englishman in the hope that he would be the direct replacement for the injured Romelu Lukaku.

But at the London Stadium, Mourinho opted for three centre-halves, wing-backs and a role up front for Alexis Sanchez, who had been rested at Brighton, all of which meant Rashford delivered just three points from 106 minutes of Gameweek 37 action.

With second place now secure after picking up a point, further change will be the way of things for United’s Gameweek 38 home match with Watford, as Mourinho detailed post-match.

“David De Gea will be rested, so it gives a chance for Sergio Romero to play. I can make changes. Marcus and Anthony played against Brighton. Today it was for Alexis and Lingard to play and Sunday is again for Martial and Rashford.”

The coach’s candid comments give us all plenty of advanced warning ahead of Sunday’s transfer deadline, although worrying about replacing goalkeepers is not the standard fare of final Gameweek management.

Then again, if managers don’t have solid cover for De Gea, his chunky 5.9 price tag could at least go some of the way to enabling purchases further up the pitch.

How many other changes Mourinho makes – Michael Carrick, for instance, will definitely start against Watford – could yet prove vital at the weekend.

Fantasy managers are clearly torn over how to read Mourinho’s mind, with Pogba, Smalling and Rashford all in the top 30 for transfers-in, and the Frenchman joining Sanchez and Lukaku in the transfers-out table as well.

Given the standard of fare on show last night, steering well clear may be the best bet.

Hammers nail defence

While Man United were busy failing to score over Double Gameweek 37, West Ham emerged as the only side to keep two clean sheets.

Chief beneficiary of all that parsimony was the 4.0-priced Adrian, who brought in 19 points – second only to Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (23) across the two fixtures.

Five Hammers defenders also delivered double-digit scores, as did midfielders Mark Noble and Joao Mario, who both scored in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Leicester City.

That double helping of points again highlighted the all-round charms of full-back Aaron Cresswell. The 2.7%-owned defender brought in 11 points from Gameweek 37 and has now produced a goal, an assist and two clean sheets over his last five starts.

Things were rather less productive for the side’s most popular regular starter, Marko Arnautovic (6.7%).

The midfielder-turned-striker had been bought by 58,000+ for the Double Gameweek, but produced just the one assist and eight points in total from the two matches.

West Ham’s win at Leicester secured their Premier League safety, although David Moyes is unlikely to allow his key players an early start to the summer.

The Hammers host Everton in Gameweek 38, which presents the coach with a chance to remind a former club of his managerial pedigree.

Based on the popularity Toffees boss Sam Allardyce – a former West Ham manager himself – has on Merseyside at present, both sets of fans might well be singing Moyes’ name on Sunday.

But for a dead rubber, the match does at least have a touch of spice about it, which could well mean strong sides are therefore selected.

      Too thin lead, maybe depend on the rest of squad. If you have better, better C Kane. If dont, C Salah imo.

      He may well get Salah and captain him. I for example have sold Salah, but getting him back now and captaining him. So it depends on how easily he could get Salah with max -4

        Imo Salah is much more likely to find his form than Kane and there are reasons for it, said many times here.

    Option 1: De Gea + Lingard -> Karius + Zaha (-4)

    OR

    Option 2: Jesus + Lingard -> Salah (cap) + Austin (-4) --- play Ryan as GK

    Alright boys, I really need your help!

    Currently second in the league with 25 point deficit, trying to get that first place.

    Pope - Elliot
    Cedric - Laporte - Dunk - Baines - VVD
    Lingard - Salah - Sane - Son - Milivojevic
    J Ayew - Jesus - Kane

    I have BB in GW38, 1 FT and 0.2 in the bank. Any ideas, suggestion, risk I should take to claim that first spot?

    Any help appreciated!

    Bit worried as a Pogba and DDG owner but my current plan is to do Morgan to TAA and play the following.

    DDG*
    VVD TAA Vertonghen
    Salah Sterling Zaha Pogba*
    Kane (C) Jesus Ayew

    bench: Pickford, Long, Dunk, Kenedy*

    1 point ahead of rival and he will captain Kane so I'm going to match him and hope Salah and co do the business at Anfield as he has no Liverpool coverage.

    All look good?

      I need get Salah so Vardy has to go. I also believe they both will start, because they played together when Swa was chasing. Abraham had almost equal xG despite less game time and smaller atgscorer odds so I also may punt on him. No better option(s) with that price imo.

    Not sure how many folk are still bothering with a draft league but I'm pretty confident I'll win mine now.
    41 point lead going into the final GW. Mine to throw away really.

    Out of interest... If you do still have one going... What sort of Points tally have you managed? Hard to quantify given it is relevant just to the confines of your ML. But would be good to get an indication of what others have managed.

      You need to take a risk.
      If this league is all you care about, you need another few punts. Firm/Mane/Aub/Lacazette/Martial/Zaha could all be potential hattrick heroes so stick the armband on one of them?

        Yah, was considering something like this:

        This would put me 30 points behind but at least there would be differentials.

    What do you reckon here guys, a lot resting on the final daw for me (top 1k finish, top spot in Mods&Cons, cash league prizes...)

    Current team:

    Ryan
    Vertonghen Tarkowski Lowton
    Alli Sterling Arnie Gross
    Kane Jesus Vardy

    Subs: De Gea*, Naughton, Cedric, King

    1.7 ITB

    Plan was always
    A) Alli -> Salah (c) for free

    But I'm leaning towards
    B) Gross + Vardy -> Salah (c) + Vokes (-4). Vokes and Alli would need to outscore Gross and Vardy by 4 points for this to be the right move.

    Or, the nuclear option. Ignore Salah, and go for
    C) Gross -> Zaha and captain Kane.

    Any other, better ideas or you liking any of these?

        I don't think theres much point in trying to cover Salah. By that logic, could have gone for Firm over Salah all season - imagine if you'd done that vs Watford..

        Vardy -> Firm for a (-4) makes me a bit uneasy tbh.

      I'd do A or C. B doesn't make sense for me - I can't see Vokes and Alli scoring enough.

      I'm leaning towards A simply because you're already doing so well and I'd imagine most will bring in Salah, if he scores big you'll drop like a stone.

      I'm currently 200k plus this season, not in a position to give advice to DR AZ. I can say I have Alli in my team, so perhaps get rid of him.

      Just do Alli to Salah and captain him ... you can thank me later 😉

    I'm sitting 3rd in my ML. DGW really didn't pay dividends. A rather poor 78 (my 8yr old has been slagging me as he managed 122).

    25 points off second - which is about as best as I can hope for.

    Current line-up.
    DDG
    Monreal / Mawson / Valencia
    Alli / Son / Mahrez / Willian / Sterling
    Vardy / Jesus

    Fab / Ayew / Lowton / Morgan

    I know he has Salah and Kane. Should I try shuffle it to get Salah in there or work on differentials.

      Work on differentials. Mahrez & Willian > Zaha & Arnie IMO

        Could be a shout. I think trying to get the big hitters in is pointless.

    What World Cup Fantasy Football options are there? Any non-SUN ones?

    Hey guys, chasing a 14 point lead. Leader has neither Kane nor Sterling. Should I take a -4 hit to get Kane or put the armband on Sterling and do GroB > Zaha or Arnie?

    Spurs don't seem to be thumping teams these days with a few players like Eriksen and Alli saving themselves for the WC. Plus Sterling seems hungry for goals even though the league is in already in the bag.

    DDG
    Alonso - Lowton - Naughton - Long
    Eriksen - Son - Sterling - Willian
    Jesus - Vardy

    Ryan - GroB - Morgan - Barnes

    Pick one:

    A) Willian --> Zaha
    B) Willian --> Ramsey
    C) Willian + Alli --> Salah + Mili for a -4
    D) Lingard --> Mili

    Frontline looks like:

    Sterling, Arnautovic, Alli, Willian, Lingard
    Kane, Jesus

    Thinking ahead to next season, as I can't wait to get this one out the way, do you think Salah will be classified as a striker next season?

    If so, who would you pick between Kane and Salah if they both came in at the same premium price?

    I'm guessing they will both be 12.5m strikers and that could make it a very interesting start to the season as I think it will be pretty tough to have both with just the 100m to spend.

      No he won't be since he's played on the wing most of this season. His goal tally shouldn't matter.

        He is playing as a forward though, more touches in the penalty box by a distance in the league. He has 31 goals and 11 assists, if he was classified as a mid then he would have to be priced something ridiculous like 13.5m+

          He starts as a winger but cuts into the box more than any other Liverpool player. As I said his goal tally shouldn't matter, he's still a midfielder going by FPL classifications.

    Any Spurs fans about?
    If Trippier and Aurier are both injured could Rose and Bavies both start?
    They both finished the game Wednesday but that might have been an emergency situation for a few minutes plus closing out the win to secure top 4.
    Have Bavies, think Rose will start ahead of him
