Team of the Season – Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta is the second to be named among the Fantasy Football Scout defenders of the season after finishing runner-up in our recent poll.

Having ended 2017/18 as the top-scoring defender (175 points), the versatile Chelsea man claimed 15.15% of the votes, with Nicolas Otamendi leading the way.

Azpilicueta recorded 15 clean sheets, was involved in eight goals (two his own and six assists), topped the charts for bonus points in his classification (25) and had the best value in defence across the season, too (25.8). In Fantasy Premier League terms, it was his most productive campaign, beating his previous best score of 170 from 2016/17 by five points.

Season Review

Much like Otamendi, Azpilicueta wasn’t the most popular choice at his club at the start of the season with Marcos Alonso (527,000+ owners) and Gary Cahill (620,000+) in more squads (445,000+) for the opening day, both on account of their greater goal threat.

Despite Chelsea’s defeat to Burnley in Gameweek 1, the first six weeks of the campaign highlighted Azpilicueta’s abilities as an all-round achiever.

Gameweek 6, in particular, thrust him into the limelight when he provided the assist for two of Alvaro Morata’s three goals in a 4-0 win at Stoke City.

They were his third and fourth of the season so far, all of which had been supplied for his compatriot. It also meant that in just six Gameweeks, the defender had already registered three clean sheets, four assists and four bonus points, averaging 6.5 points per match. Not surprisingly, that was when he earned his first price rise.

Three Gameweeks later, Azpilicueta found the back of the net for the first time in a 4-2 home win over Watford. Next, in Gameweek 11, he chalked up his sixth goal involvement – another assist for Morata as Manchester United were defeated at Stamford Bridge.

Gameweek 14’s 1-0 win over Swansea City was the only match of the campaign that Azpilicueta missed, an end to an incredible run which had seen him start 74 league meetings in a row.

He registered another 37 appearances in 2017/18, underlining a security of starts which remains a significant factor behind his appeal.

This is compounded further when we consider that the average number of appearances made by Chelsea’s other senior defenders (Alonso (33), Moses (25), Rudiger (25), Cahill (24) and Christensen (23)) in combination was just 27.83.

By that Swansea encounter, the Spanish international was valued at £6.9m and spent nine weeks between Gameweek 21 and 29 at £7.0m before Chelsea’s underperformance as a team triggered the sales to bring him back to £6.9m.

Even so, Azpilicueta’s remarkable consistency was again demonstrated in the second half of the season. Between Gameweeks 18 and 38 he never went longer than four matches without an FPL return, either a clean sheet or attacking points.

In the end, only Ben Davies, Aaron Cresswell and Kieran Trippier (all seven) assisted more times than Azpilicueta’s six, while only Antonio Valencia and Jan Vertonghen (both 16) registered more clean sheets.

THE PROSPECTS

Azpilicueta’s chances of replicating his output remains debatable.

We can be reasonably confident that he’ll remain in the £6.5m to £7.0m price bracket, but with Antonio Conte’s future still in doubt, there are several unknown factors at play.

The 28-year-old should remain an ever-present in the side, regardless of manager, as he has arguably been Chelsea’s most consistent performer in recent seasons. However, with both the personnel and tactics at the club very much up in the air, his clean sheet prospects are uncertain.

2017/18 demonstrated that Azpilicueta will likely prosper in whatever role is asked of him, though. The secret to his success this season was an ability pick up bonus points from multiple avenues on top of his clean sheets.

While Alonso excelled for goal threat, Otamendi for pass completion, Davies in assists and Hegazi for his defensive duties, Azpilicueta achieved in all four categories.

He was second only to Otamendi for passes attempted (2758) and completed (2392), second also for BPS points claimed for pass completion (152) and top for big chances created among defenders (11). Defensively, Azpilicueta also finished second on the BPS charts for points earned from tackles (39), joint with Christopher Schindler and behind Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt (42).

Conte’s future as Chelsea manager should be resolved very soon. We will then be required to monitor the players to leave and arrive over the summer before making a final decision on Azpilicueta’s role.

His case remains strong though. Ultimately he proved to be better value than any other Chelsea defender, including the explosive Alonso, who he also surpassed in our poll. That alone should assure that he remains a key target for 2017/18.

Good luck to Unai Emery at Arsenal. 50m budget + sales. Bit of a job on his hands but could win them the Europa league. His Sevilla team were horrible to play against.

That's exactly what's needed really. Get buy in from the players and make the most of what's there, as they have pace and talent. If he gets a bit more in defence and CM Arsenal can pretty easily make a strong run for 4th

i went through all top players last night and calculated their minutes per point of this season when they played...some actually quite surprising results!

according to this best team is (definitely a 343 since the 3 strikers had the best mins per point score, and defenders the worst)

    DDG
    DAVIES MOSES JONES
    SALAH STERLING SON MARTIAL
    AGUERO GIROUD AUBA

yes this doesnt take into consideration nailed-ness...so its players that make most impact, but if you then have good cover on the bench this may be a good shout....i was so surprised to see moses and jones in there.

Moses came good [I think] second half of the season as he more or less nailed the position by then. Sort of an Alonso equivalent on the opposite side, so whoever plays that position [and is nailed] should do well.

Go on, get yourself a grav.

Interesting stuff. Obviously players who don't play full minutes are a risk but this is definitely a way to figure out who you hope will prove to be nailed on. If Son and Martial were nailed on they'd be great options. Same goes for the forwards, and Jones

There are two main reasons why strikers get better mins per point scores than defenders:
      (1) Strikers get more points per match than defenders, and that is why they are more expensive.
      (2) Strikers are more likely to be substituted in the last half hour, whereas defenders are more likely to play the full 90 minutes.

So do you intend to bias your squad selection in favour of players who are unlikely to play the full 90 minutes?

I'm unconvinced either Lemar or Giroud will be regular starters. Those friendlies and qualifiers have taken place over a period of about eight months, so I'm not sure they represent certain evidence of Deschamps' thinking - Martial has started two of their last three.

Kante and Pogba are nailed on for certain. Then one of Lemar/Tolisso/Nzonzi/Fekir/Matuidi if France play 4-3-3.

Giroud may have a better chance, but seeing as Deschamps said he sees Mbappe as more of a central striker, and Griezmann will obviously start, I think they'll use Giroud off the bench. Guess Lemar could play on the left wing but he's not as good there imo.

              Could be wrong obviously!

Where do Arsenal need to improve next season?

Arsenal clearly need a lot to be challenging for the title, but the top 4 might not be too far away. Now that Emery is in place, what should his priorities be?

What should he look for in the transfer market and who would be good, and possible choices? Who needs to be shipped out?

They need a new experienced CB and solid DM. Sokratis would be a perfect signing. Emery could maybe bring in his former defensive midfielders in Krychowiak or N'Zonzi. They also desperately need a new winger who's strong 1 on 1.

Cech, Mustafi/Koscielny and Bellerín would also have to be replaced for a strong title challenge, but I'd consider these players to be adequate given the circumstances. Cech in particular is a weak point, but goal keepers are difficult to find.

Oooh forgot about the polish terminator. He didn’t fit PSGs system but would be great for Arsenal.

Would he worth with Unai again after being loaned out and having a poor time in Paris?

Agree about a keeper, though I think Arsenal fans like Ospina for some reason.

The issue is the budget. I guess GK is needed for a title challenge but it's down thelist of priorities for Arsenals goals

Nzonzi would be ideal for arsenal. Adds some bite to that midfield.

Potentially a CM that can box to box and not injury prone, Ramsey and Wilshere do a job but cannot last a whole season.

New CBs as Mert has gone, Kosc is out, Mustafi needs someone next to him.

I’d even argue a new goalkeeper, Cech isn’t the force he was. I could see Butland, with Cech coaching him to be better in the future.

Essentially, if he can get Aub and Laca working together in a team, build it around them.

      Keeper, centre back, defensive CM.
Then have to address the Ozil issue. Can be a key player but was generally very poor last season.
But on a 50m budget not going to be easy. centre back and CDM the priority.

New keeper, shift Mustafi to the bench,or just sell him. Get 2 new CB's.
A good 'DM' with Xhaka dropping to the bench. Don't think it should be Seri. Someone like N'Zonzi would be decent.
A decent winger. And keeping hold of Ramsey and Wilshere who are linked with moves.
      Don't think 50 million can do that,unfortunately.

the priority should be on tactics and organisation first, particularly on defensive side of things, and instilling a strong work ethic, this is where we have been lacking, the other big thing is get the full potential out of the players we already have, the likes of Bellerin and Ozil etc (sometimes due to the structure of the team and their role in it, and sometimes in the case of Ozil, picking the games where he feels like putting in a shift) , and develop the young players

in terms of transfers, GK, CM, maybe a full back and CB depending on what Emery can do with what we already have

When I see Sterling, Delph, Can and Mane performing the way they are I feel a change in coaching staff is key for Arsenal with a good head coach who may not be a great manager like Wenger but has better coaching knowledge.

That said, Arsenal needs more steel in midfield and defense. Some in the Fernandinho or Kante mould. A leader at the back, perhaps Oblak or Varane.

      Attack seems really good.

Honestly don't think this Arsenal team needs MAJOR surgery - A new GK, CD, DMF would be priority for me, and a shift to 3-5-2 so they can accommodate both Aubameyang and Lacazette.

      --------------------------LENO-------------------------
      -------Mavropanos--Koscielny--DE LIGT--------
      Bellerin---------------------------------SESSEGON
      ---------------Ramsey----------GUEYE-------------

I think Arsenal is now a 5 year project, they don't need major surgery but they do need to build rather than buy a team - Do you think they are too young? Bare in mind they have players like Monreal and Kolasinac who can slot in both positions.

If Sessgnon entered the market he'd probably cost about the whole of Arsenals transfer budget. Same with De Ligt, who Ajax have pledged not to sell (and spurs have first dibs on ajax players anyway lol)

You would be looking at a serious outlay for those players, no doubt, but I think Arsenal have saleable assets who in this market would certainly fetch reasonable fees. Combine that with the rumoured 50M they have to spend (Personally I would be shocked if that is true) then there is scope to add talent to the squad.

What happens if Auba or Laca get injured? It's like a Jesus/Aguero problem.

I think another attacking player like Zaha or Martial, who could play wide or through the middle would greatly improve the squad, and give backup in your proposed system, or actually start (wide) if Laca or Auba are benched/rotated/injured. That's unless Iwobi steps up, though we could use a little money from selling him and Welbeck tbh.

If Wilshere stays, he's got to be the best bench player (or a starter), so I guess it would be possible to push Ozil up and drop Wilshere in behind them, but then we have Xhaka and Elneny as CM benchies, and there's no circumstance in which they would ever realiy need to be utilised unless they, too, step up their game (Sell them too!?). So that's why another attacker is necessary in my eyes.

Even 2 - and consider selling Ozil? Sure if we can get a good price. Ozil might be reinvigorated after WC and with a new manager, but he might also continue to be a liability in most aspects besides final third flicks, which might not be so useful in more counter attacking football.

Their big problem is away from home, so a lot can be fixed with tactics and work ethics. They need to clean up the squad a bit in defence and get a powerhouse boss as CD, that can not only defend but trigger counter-attacks with precise passing, same criteria for DCM but should be able to get existing options up to par there. Maybe a gung-ho winger to threaten on those same counterattacks and diversify their tactical options a bit.

Emery could change the entire tactics based on the players he would get, with PSG he went for 4-3-3 cause he had the talent and the ease to control the midfield. However, I guess he'll stick with 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2 diamond to accommodate both Laca and Auba.
Anyways they need Butland, Sokratis, Koulibaly, N'Zonzi and a proper winger anyone would be better than Iwobi tbh.

Replace Cech with a quality goalkeeper.
Get an experienced centre back who can organise a defence. I don't have an issue with Mustafi in defence, it's just he is too inexperienced to organise it.
Biggest issue for me is a good defensive midfielder, Coquelin in that one season is the nearest we got to replacing Viera.
We probalby need a winger too.

Arsenal need to be more focussed, but I think that would come from having a sturdier defence to spread confidence through the team.

Defensive midfielders and centre-backs. Arsenal have the players to play a 4-3-1-2. Perhaps something like this:

      Cech
      Bellerin ????? Koscielny Kolasinac
      ????? Xhaka Monreal
      Ozil
      Auba Laca

This allows Kola and Bellerin to get forward and Monreal and the other DM can cover for the fact that those two full backs lack defensive discipline, but Monreal and the DM know how to defend in the full back position. It also frees up Xhaka slightly to play forward passes and gives him less defensive responsibility.

Despite starting in a back 3, he leaves the defensive the line and pushes up to support the midfield. He is essentially OOP during the attacking phase.

Absolutely. I think price will be an issue though.

        Azpi will surely be 7.0m.

DDG will probably only be 5.5/6.0, but whether we can afford that will depend on prices elsewhere! 4.5m goalkeepers are generally the best value players in the game.

If Mo gets changed, every wide forward in the game should be changed. Hazard, Son etc...

You could increase the number of forward slots to 5, and include all wide forwards, but then where would that leave the midfield? Personally I don't fancy cheering on defensive midfielders every time they make a tackle, block or interception.

This is how I see the current FPL classifications:

      Goalkeepers
      Centre-backs / Full-backs / Wing-backs
      Attacking midfielders / wide forwards
      Central strikers

There is no room for deeper lying central midfielders. I would argue that's a good thing.

        Add sub categories of players.

Wing backs count as defenders but only get 5 points per goal.
Defensive midfielders count as midfielders but get 2 points per CS.
Attacking midfielders count as midfielders but get no points for CS.

          Interesting idea.

You could continue to break things down, but the more you do that the more it becomes open to interpretation and opinion. Players sometimes move between different roles between different roles or sit on the line. Keeping general categories allows breathing room for a player's position to shift throughout the season.

In the case of wide forwards, it is arguably more simple and less controversial to just give them a price hike, and say he is an expensive midfielder, rather than a striker. The generalisation then allows fluidity of movement throughout a season.

If the new Chelsea manager plays 4-1-4-1 formation in pre-season, is Alonso classified as a wing-back or a full-back?

          1. Ramboros
            • 12 Years
            5 years, 11 months ago

It doesn't matter that much. If Alonso plays more defensively, he'll be less likely to score and thus his WB classification will not hurt his point potential as much.

The WB classification should mostly be used by players who can't play more defensively than WB (Moses) and players who play in both midfield and defence (Milner).

Similar to my slightly more extreme idea of getting rid of all positions and sticking a defensive and attacking valuation on each player, which determines how many points they get for different actions

    Szczesny
    Carvajal Sidibe Maguire
    Isco Hazard Asensio Lanzini
    Messi Jesus Mbappe

Think Lanzini will start, Arg manager has spoken abt using 4-1-3-2 and he's in the projected XI.

    £0.0m remaining, Jesus or Lukaku?

If Argentina use that formation they will be so poor that even messi won’t be worth owning and I’d go lukaku over Jesus because I see Belgium putting 5+ past either or both of Panama and Tunisia

disagree, they'd be the most offensive team in the WC along with FRA

But they would have absolutely nothing behind it so would get spanked by all three teams in their group - Aguero wouldn’t perform because he’d be part of a two, Messi would be quite isolated on the right and teams would destroy their back line and shockingly poor defensive midfielders.

I like it maybe look elsehwere than Mbappe and sidibe though expect them to be rotated. Where will Azpi play? Carvajal might be risky too. Nice picks tho

0 - Unai Emery has come up against Pep Guardiola (10 games) and Jose Mourinho (5 games) on 15 occasions overall, but hasn't won a single one of those matches (W0 D5 L10). Hierarchy.

    4.5m 4.5m
    6.5m 6m 4.5m 4.5m 4.5m
    10m 9m 8m 7m 6m
    11.5m 9m 4.5m

This squad is 100m exactly, with 1 premium forward and 3 potentially captainable mids. Given the recent findings about value, how do people think this is as a value template to work from for FPL?

Obviously will need tweaking when player values are released, but conceptually?

        • 7 Years

I think even conceptually you have to consider that the trend in the game has been 3rd strikers becoming worth less and less in recent years, as the pool shrinks.

Conceptually this could work. Conceptually anything could work.

But I do like the idea of speculating as to how my gw1 team will look like next season, so I'll have a go, and even drop some names to the prices to0.

        Goalies: Lloris-5,5 (dead goalie-4.0)
        Defenders: Alonso-7.0 - A Young-6.0 - Walker-6.0 - VVD-6.0 (Mee-4.5)
        Mids: Salah-13.0 - Sane-8.5 - Townsend-6.0 - Pogba-7-5 - the most tasy promotee priced 5.5
        Strikers: Auba-11.0 (anyone playing regularly @ 5.0 + anyone @ 4.0)

Potentially, but I'm going to try and find the players to fit within a loose template instead of finding the players I want then shoehorning them into a team.

I usually fill my GK/DEF first with cheapies and any essentials, then I know how much I have left for my front 8. If I have money ITB, I can upgrade defence with the change.

Dangerous to invest in strikers below 10 mil next season in all probability tbh, with Vardy likely the only Forward worth owning around 9 m to 9.5 m

In all honesty I'm looking at something like

      4.5 4.0
      6.0 6.0 5.0 5.0 4.5
      10.0 9.5 8.0 6.5 5.0
      11.5 10.0 4.5

Although of course this is all pure speculation, I like the idea of a 4-4-2

I'm a big Vardy fan so that works nicely 😉 I like the idea of having flexibility between a 4-4-2, 3-5-2 or even 4-5-1 on occassion, which is why I've invested so much in the midfield but having 4 defenders over 5m also looks tempting

Defense I think will be the most exciting place to invest for me in terms of preseason speculation - I don't see it being fun trying to find midfield spots next season and all the good forwards to own are so expensive as a rule, but there seems to be a lot of nice sounding defensive chatter. Will be fun also owning a utd defender better than De Gea for FPL

7.0 a very annoying price point as well, not a fan of owning any player in any position that price tbh

Interesting case taking place in a Belgian court tomorrow that could be the biggest shake up of the football world since the Bosman ruling.

It is not clear how this case will go and could be the defining moment on the rise of the superagent.

All of this Arsenal bashing even after Wenger leaves is a bit sordid. Chelsea have a manager in place the players don't like, no champions league most of their best players wanting to leave on the last year of their contract or both. They are a mess
