World Cup 2018 – Team Analysis – Croatia

Another major tournament, another Croatia side plagued by off-the-field issues – making Fantasy investment difficult to consider.

There are plenty of quality options in the Vatreni squad which we’ve outlined here but it’s hard to predict what mental state many of them will occupy in Russia.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Croatia’s route to the World Cup showcased both the best and the worst of Zlatko Dalic’s side. Stocked full of elite players from Europe’s top leagues, there were plenty of impressive moments during qualification for the Vatreni. But there was disappointment in equal measure as this nation’s ongoing struggle with concentration and resilience rumbles on.

In the eighth round of a fixtures, after a 1-0 defeat in Turkey, Croatia looked like they would be missing out even on a play-off place, as Iceland had made Group I’s top spot their own. With two matches left, previous manager Ante Cacic was sacked from his position and replaced with Dalic, who oversaw a draw against Finland and a crucial 2-0 win away at play-off chasing rivals Ukraine to secure passage to the next round.

A blistering 4-1 victory at home to Greece in the first leg ensured Dalic’s men were able to relax in the second, which they drew 0-0.

However, while Croatia are healthier on the pitch now than they were six months ago, their squad is still plagued by matters off it. Fans are still opposed to the national federation amid claims of corruption and both Luka Modric and Dejan Lovren are now unpopular figures too. The pair have been accused of perjury in the trial of former Dinamo Zagreb executive director Zdravko Mamic for transfer irregularities.

UEFA QUALIFYING + PLAY-OFFS

Most starts: Domagoj Vida (12), Ivan Perisic (11), Mario Mandzukic, Danijel Subasic, Sime Vrsaljko (all 10), Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric (both 9).

Most goals: Mandzukic (5), Nikola Kalinic, Andrej Kramaric (both 3), Perisic, Brozovic (both 2).

Most assists: Modric (4), Ivan Rakitic, Vrsaljko (both 3), Kramaric, Brozovic (both 2).

THE KEY TARGETS

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric (£6.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £9.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) looks set to benefit from a new advanced role with his nation at this World Cup. In years gone by the former Tottenham man has fulfilled much the same role he does at club level, pulling the strings from the middle and making the rest of the team tick. However, Croatia coach Dalic has recently restructured the midfield in order to exploit of Modric’s attacking talent. Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and Inter Milan technician Marcelo Brozovic now form the engine room with Modric playing as a number 10. He was involved in six goals during qualifying but his new role may bring more Fantasy returns in Russia, provided he avoid the distraction of his public opinion.

Top-goalscorer in qualifying Mario Mandzukic (£7.4m on Fantasy iTeam | £9.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) should be on your Fantasy radar, if he can get match-fit in time for the tournament. The Juventus forward scored five goals in 10 starts during qualifying, more than any of his team-mates. He’ll get the nod over the rivals for the centre-forward position if he can get back to 100% so it’s worth checking whether he starts against Senegal on Friday afternoon.

Sime Vrsaljko (£5.8m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) has assumed Darijo Srna’s mantle as Croatia’s marauding right wing-back and is the headline option in defence. Three assists in qualification from a brilliant ability to cross the ball is a great place to start but clean sheets are also a distinct possibility too. Croatia kept their opponents out seven times from a possible 12 in qualifying, with one of those against upcoming World Cup Group D opponents Iceland. Meanwhile, only Bolivia (16) scored fewer goals in South American qualifying than Argentina (19).

THE LONG SHOTS

With Mandzukic’s fitness hanging in the balance, both Andrej Kramaric (£6.3m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) and Nikola Kalinic (£6.9m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) are in the frame to lead the line in Dalic’s favoured 4-2-3-1 system. Each forward is very different to the other but both of them have proved they can fill Mandzukic’s shoes, including from a Fantasy Football perspective. Kramaric is the shorter and quicker of the two and was given the nod ahead of Kalinic for Croatia’s recent friendly against Brazil. In five starts during qualifying the Hoffenheim man scored three times and was the provider for a further two goals. Meanwhile, Kalinic, formerly of Blackburn Rovers, is a target man who is very good in the air, who scored three qualification goals in five starts. He netted one of the goals as Croatia beat Spain 2-1 at Euro 2016.

Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic (£6.2m on Fantasy iTeam | £8.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) has demonstrated that, despite sitting deeper in midfield, he is still capable of involving himself in goals and assists. He netted two of his own and assisted two more during qualifying making a case for an interesting differential for Fantasy managers.

In defence Danijel Subasic (£5.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA), Vedran Corluka (£5.7m on Fantasy iTeam | £5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA) and Dejan Lovren (£5.8m on Fantasy iTeam  | £5.0m on McDonald’s FIFA) are all established routes into any potential clean sheets.

The larger colour blocks this year do look sharp. Although the designer's bled them into one another with a sort of old television screen effect https://bit.ly/2swhsB9

Perisic is a decent option as long as he is reasonably priced 🙂

Surprised Perisic wasn’t mentioned as one of the targets in that article.

I’d prefer it with a ‘predicted line up’ and ‘penalty/direct free kick takers’ parts.

Never been this high in the comment thread ever lol

Random question that has sprung to mind:
Are the site's contributors going to be doing articles on each of the 20 Prem league teams before the league starts too?
Or just a summarised version of the top 6, midtable and then promoted teams?

Only asking because this WC info is all great and noticed 1 article on Fulham already. 🙂

They didn't use to do it previously. Only articles on new additions to the premier league. Teams or players that is.

The Fulham article was part of a trilogy that looked at the promoted teams so one was done for both Wolves and Cardiff too 🙂

Hasn't been a decision made on this yet. Lots of WC stuff to come, and after that we get into the pre-FPL stuff. There will definitely be coverage but the format hasn't been decided

A team by team 'What To Expect' kind of article would be really nice to discuss any changes in management/personnel, impact of having/not having European games, whether the stats make last season's performances seem sustainable, etc.

I'm probably being greedy though 🙂

Also, quite tricky to pen those sort of things when there's so much transfer business yet to be done and they could definitely set you up for a fall when some git links back to one of the articles at the end of the season to show how wide of the mark it was 😉

You need intelligence to play in a Guardiola system. Yaya crying to the media once again proves that he severely lacking in that department. That's why he wasn't playing.

If you have a potentially divisive senior figure in the dressing room working with a manager like Pep then their toast. Difficult to imagine he lacks football intelligence.

He has football intelligence, to an extent, but the way Pep has them playing is different.

When Pep first joined he said he was going to change the way they looked at football forever. He has many unorthodox methods. E.g. They have a positional grid on the training pitch, and they have to occupy certain zones at certain times based on their teammates movement. It gets complex. The Bayern players were struggling here 😀 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6YDl1dFI5g

Who knows you could be right; it is just speculation though and a I thought a bit unfair to pin that one on him!

Slightly surprised how well Sterling adapted as his judgement/intelligence has never shone through really.

Back to Toure, still think Pep used him as a means to stamp his authority on the squad....been done many times before.

Toure didn't exactly make it difficult either, having hissy-fits over lack of b'day cakes etc ...

You could also argue he doesn't like players with egos. Eto'o complained about not being respected. Yaya wanted cake. Zlatan is Zlatan, so of course they fell out 🙂

What a strange thing to write. Yaya clearly has ‘football intelligence’ or wouldn’t have been the player he used to be. Yaya is a divisive figure that wouldn’t listen and do everything that Pep wanted. Removing him is a good move for Pep, like when Poch got rid of all of Spurs’ naughty boys like Townsend etc.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With Fred expected to sign today for Manchester United, they look to have significantly improved their midfield depth. If, as expected, United play a midfield three of Matic, Fred, and Pogba it could move Pogba up the field to combine with the front three more often. This of course was also expected to happen when Matic came into the side. Will Fred make a more pronounced difference than Matic did? How do you rate this signing?

Presumably Fred has been bought to be a regular starter – whose spot in the team will he take?

Also, if Lukaku and Sanchez are regular starters, who will take the third spot ahead of the midfield? Will Rashford, Lingard, and Martial continue to rotate or do you expect one of them to make the position theirs?

Mourinho let the shackles off at the start of last season, I expect the same again to start with before he takes a more defensive approach further down the line.

Pogba should be 7.5 based on how his season went. At that price, he could be golden for the first few before the first WC.

New coaches in too who are more attacking. I think Mourinho, to some degree, played even more defensively than he wanted to because he didn't trust the players to do what he wanted.

A LB that he trusts, and Fred might make him more confident that they can go forward and stay tight at the back

The better the defender, the more space they can control. With a back-line of Young Jones Smalling Valencia he had to restrict it more than usual I think 😀

Really hope United make some quality defensive signings. Dalot is still young. Hopefully a CB and LB, 1st choice.

Yeah Dalot is a great option for the future and I hope it goes through, but it can't be at the expense of CB or LB.

Feels like the kind of signing you need to make when you have the starting XI sorted, which United don't right now

Did he? I remember the start of the season being characterised by some solid/uninspiring performances where Man Utd kept grabbing several goals in the last 20 minutes when the opposition were piling men forward. They still looked pretty shackled to me but the scorelines made it appear as though there was a gung-ho approach.

Obviously it doesn't really matter from a fantasy perspective when the goals are scored but I'm not expecting attractive free flowing football.

I think he adds much needed agility to the central midfield. The passing was sluggish there last season.

He could play at the base of a 4231 next to Matic, or next to Pogba in a 433. Can see him starting as a #6 some games to give Matic a rest.

For the final spot I'm sure it will vary with the opponent. We saw Mata against the lesser sides, and Lingard against the big teams. So I'd expect to see that again.

I don't expect Martial to stay. Rashford as Alexis back-up.

I wouldn't say not needed, I think he's an upgrade. Not sure it was a necessary upgrade but I think the move helps them, takes him away from rivals, and Martial wasn't really fitting in with Mourinho

I don't even think a new RW is needed, but a left-footer with a bit of pace would be nice. Bale/Griezmann would have been perfect, but it won't happen 😀

The main issue was full-backs last season. Need them to break down busses.

          😀

I know it's been said before, but for me this is getting close to make or break for Mourinho. If Pogba doesn't play well this year or United don't perform, the excuses won't be valid anymore

He's never really been a long-term build a legacy kind of manager so I suspect he has a fairly short shelf life now regardless of what happens. Hard to see Man City not winning the league again and my impression of Mourinho is that he won't stick around in Pep's shadow even if things do improve a little.

I'm a pretty casual observer though so that's truly lightweight speculation 🙂

I think we will see a mix of 4321 & 433 over the season for United. More likely that they will start an extra attacker against smaller teams at home. Think Fred will definitely start all games.

Signing a RW might not be United’s top priority but I wouldn’t be surprised if they get one let’s see.

The player I’m most interested in is Sanchez. He’s nailed and is having a good rest. If priced between 10-10.5m he could be the one to have.

Think Sanchez will interest me at the start of this season. A full summer off for the first time in forever and hopefully a bit of fire in his belly. Needs a reasonable price drop though. The rest of the attackers look likely to be dodgy from a rotation or tiredness point of view for me.

What's the reasoning? I don't know enough about the situation to understand without a massively simplified explanation 🙂

        Why?

        Matic
        Fred - Pogba
New RW - Lukaku - Alexis

McT, Herrera, Lingard, Mata, Rashford and potentially Martial as backup. Possibly a DM backup in too.

I think if we play Fred in Midfield with Herrera and Matic and McTominay that should really free up Pogba

Wolves reporterly offered 40 mil € for Joao Cancelo as per Skysports Italia and Fabrizio Romano. They are close to signing Rui Patricio too.

We are all just living in Jorges' world.

Rui Patricio (who they are interested in). Jota and Neves are in the U21 squad if I remember correctly.

Who would you rather have on your fantasy side:
    A) Fazio(ARG)
    B) M.Dembele

The site also gives points for team win and when the team scores.. no subs so you Can change the formation..

Both teams should win similar points. More potential of a Argentina CS than Dembele scoring. At the same time, Belgium should score more than Argentina due to Panama and Tunisia. So, depending on how it scorer you make a decision between whats the goal difference in plus of Belgium vs Argentina CS potential.

Yeah I guess so, is Fazio nailed over Rojo atleast?
I dont think Dembele will score but Belgium should get some wins and go far Which is always Nice for such a cheap asset.
I also think Argentina Will have a tough time keeping a clean against Nigeria and Croatia..

        Meh its a tough one

Ante Rebić if placed in mf position with reasonable price could be great pick. He had excellent season in Eintracht and it was one of the best players against Brasil.

Also worth of mentioning is Vida. He is nailed CB but can also play right full back, like he did now against Brasil, and he can score header from corners/free kick.

New coach is very good, and sacking Cacic was one of the better decisions. I think Croatia will do very good this tournament, maybe even take the 1st spot in group but fantasy wise it is hard to say who to pick. Even fw position isn't nailed on.

      10.5/11

His previous scores at Arsenal probably prevent him from dropping much more than that.

Diego Costa is 35/1 with Unibet to be Top Scorer at the WC, am I missing something? From what I'm reading it looks like he'll start up front for Spain who have an easy group with Morocco and Iran. In contrast Messi and Neymar are at 9s and 10s.

Sure he'll start? Aspas and false 9s always a danger with them. Not on pens etc.

Although saying that he's got a chance and think 35 is too extreme.

Looks like decent value. Probably worth backing on Betfair if the price is similar to give you a bit of flexibility.

      I like Senegal @ 5/1 to win Group H 🙂

I've investigated Yaya's claims about Pep's racism in great detail and my verdict is that City should be deducted 20 points in the 17/18 season and should be banned from buying players until the next decade.

    @RealFevr

    Perisic 8,5M
    Modric 7M
    Rakitic 7M

With that more advanced role Modric seems like a no brainer, def under my radar
