The Community Round-up

Our World Cup planning picked up pace yesterday after FIFA launched their official Fantasy game for this summer’s tournament.

The discussion on site, as well as Hot Topics and Members tables, mainly focussed on Russia 2018 as Fantasy managers start to firm up their plans ahead of next Thursday’s big kick-off.

There was also chat on the Premier League’s decision to announce a winter break from 2019/20 earlier today, while the World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament approaches it’s mid-point.

The Hottest Topics

After Jose Mourinho made his first move in the transfer market, we pondered Fred’s potential impact on Manchester United, also canvassing thoughts on your club’s transfer dealings so far.

Stoichkov#8 helped us look forward to the World Cup as round two of the Community Tournament for World Cup friendlies kicked off last weekend.

McNulty also gave us a helping hand in our quest for World Cup Fantasy points, posting the odds for teams remaining unbeaten in the group stage.

And G-Whizz was another to aid our defensive strategy with a look at World Cup 2018 clean sheet odds,Tommytour was keen to discuss transfer plans for the FIFA game.

FFFrøg mulled over the ever-crucial captaincy strategy for the FIFA game, assessing how best to spread captaincy options to maximize chances of a big haul.

Earlier today, KunTheMan also sparked a very handy assessment of the best bargain options available and Hodor offered a new perspective on squad selection, suggesting that strength on the bench can be overlooked.

Finally, our editor, David, also updated us with the news that the Premier League will introduce a winter break in 2019/20 as other, including Mark, gave their view on the potential domestic impact.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

Members Tables

Members Tables this week featured one of our own, with J0E looking at World Cup Goalscorers from the World Cup qualification data, as well as World Cup Talismen, players who are the most involved in their team’s attack.

Elsewhere, FPLVirgin looked at World Cup teams’ chances of getting clean sheets.

Our Members Tables can be found in the Members Only area in the Stats Tables section.

The Community Tournaments

Stoichkov#8’s World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament hit the halfway point on Thursday with the conclusion of Gameweek 4, with Gameweek 5 not yet complete at the time of writing.

At the halfway point, Rony1993 has pulled seven points ahead of a chasing pack, which includes five managers who are split by only four points.

There’s work to be done for those below sixth, but with it so close at the top the use of differentials could break the table up significantly.

FFFrøg has started a Community Tournament for the World Cup Fantasy game, and is taking applications now.

Community members will join a nation and play as a team against others. The game will follow the group stages and then the knockout format of the real tournament, with 96 spots initially available.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

With all the World Cup malarkey going on this one kinda slipped under the radar...
"The FA have announced that there will be a WINTER BREAK in the Premier League starting 2019-2020 season. The break would be over two weekends, with 10 teams playing one weekend and the other 10 the next weekend, giving each club a two-week rest."
"The break will NOT affect the Christmas and New Year fixtures as it will happen in late January to early February. FA Chief Martin Glenn: "There is nothing as intense as an English Premier League season, with 38 games at all count for something."
    Good move?

Not IMO. Personally believe the League Cup should be scrapped and you scrap FA Cup replays from round 4 onwards.

I always thought the arguement for a winter break was (weather and) because there was too much football during the festive season. If that's the case I don't get why this 2 week break will be at the end of January early February...

This as well. The halfway point of the season is around Christmas because of PL, CL / EL and League Cup games.

The Christmas/New Years schedule has the highest watching figures. That will never leave English football.

It's so people can't keep blaming the lack of a winter break on England's failures at tournaments.

They'll have to find something else after that...

Some thoughts on the official WC fantasy game

    - This isn't really a long-term planning game because of the number of transfers + WC - so you can afford to maximise returns per round
    - You should be benching players who play latest in the round and sub them in if required
    - It probably makes sense to play your chips in the earlier rounds (including in the first knockout round) when there is more likely to be higher scoring games and greater clean sheet potential. The exception to this is the bench boost which should be played when you have 15 quality players in your team - this maybe in the first knockout round when there will be mismatches between group winners vs runners up and you get an increased budget and there is the potential for extra time which increases your chance of points.
    - There doesn't appear to be as much value in the Top GKs compared to FPL because of the price ranges. The best GK in FPL was priced at £5.5m whereas it is £6.5m in WC fantasy. Contrast this to FWDs, Kane was £12.5m in FPL, but Neymar is only £12.0m. Midfield is still likely to be the place for most value given the point scoring system.
    - Just like FPL, worth picking players who are nailed to start and playing out of position (in a more attacking role). However, if you are looking for cheap bench fillers then it is worth looking out for those players who are 'super subs' for their nation and nick those late assists / goals.

I think Max Cap might be better played later like in the final where you have less chance of strategic captaincy subs etc.

I'd add that it makes sense to pick cheapies who play early in the round and bigger hitters to fall back on in the groups that play in the last days (eg James Rodriguez).

Thinking Round 2 personally. Some of the big guns have 'easier' games and so you would hope one of the big players from those teams would fire.

But you'd get that anyway if you're cycling the armband through your big hitters.

Closer games in the latter stages make it harder to pick the best captain, so let max cap do it for you.

Playing on a local site. 12.5 for Neymar as a midfielder must surely be worth it?

This is my first World cup draft, any advice would be appreciated:

    Cavani - Jesus
    Cueva - Ziyach - Isco - Aldawsari - Mueller
    Godin - Sibide - Dalsgaard
    El Kajoui

Subs: Uzoho - Lukaku - Danilo - Meunier

It is correct to bench players who play later in the round correct?
Any thoughts on the current team?

I was trying to decide whether I should do Kajoui to Muslera and then Godin to Hakim or just stick as it is.
Or maybe downgrade Cueva to Nandez and then spend the 1 mil updrading the defence?

You'll get more replies on the new article.

It is correct to bench players who play later, and I would stick with Godin. Cueva to Nandez looks a decent way to raise funds if you need it but your defence looks alright. Isco is a waste of funda however, a 30 minute player at best. I would definetly get Nandez instead of him.
