Tunisia have been a little overlooked for World Cup Fantasy with two big nations draw in the same group as them.

However, going into the tournament with just one defeat in the last 15 months, there’s no reason that the cheap options available can’t be differentials for risk-taking Fantasy managers.

We’ve got everything you need to know about England’s first opponents of the World Cup.

ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Securing passage to Russia out of a favourable draw in qualification, Tunisia have been perhaps unfairly written off as another set of World Cup whipping boys. Since booking their place at this summer’s finals, the Eagles of Carthage have gone toe-to-toe with some of Europe’s big sides and shown they will be no walkovers in Group G. At the very least, they should prove a much sterner test for Belgium and England than Panama.

Coach Nabil Maaloul, in his second spell, has been in the job just over a year and took charge of the last four qualifying matches in CAF Group A. Tunisia had won the opening two fixtures but were eliminated from the quarter-finals of last year’s African Cup of Nations by Burkina Faso at the quarter-final stages.

Implementing a 4-3-3 formation, Maloul oversaw two wins and two draws to top Group A and since then has impressed on the friendly circuit. In 10 matches played since last March, Tunisia have lost just once. The group of players is one that seemingly never gives up either, twice coming from 2-0 down in big matches to salvage draws; against DR Congo in qualifying and recently against Portugal in a warm-up match.

In fact, the warm-up programme went better than could be expected. In order to replicate playing against Panama, England and Belgium, Tunisia arranged friendlies with Costa Rica, Portugal and Spain. From those three matches in particular, they registered a win, a draw and a defeat. Costa Rica were beaten 1-0, Spain were given a stern test and only came out 1-0 victors, while Maaloul’s men stunned Portugal by coming back from 2-0 down to draw. Seeing success in those results, Tunisia will not be afraid to ask England and Belgium questions, just as they did against Spain and Portugal.

The only things for Tunisians to be disappointed by is the difficulty of that Group G draw but more importantly the injury to best player Youssef Msakni. He was vital during qualification, scoring and assisting three times each (six goal involvements) in six matches, but suffered a cruciate knee injury in March.

CAF QUALIFYING

Most starts: Mohamed Amine Ben Amor, Ali Maloul, Aymen Mathlouthi (all 6), Hamdi Nagguez (5), Ghilane Chalali, Yassine Meriah (both 4).

Most goals: Aymen Abdennour, Anice Badri, Ben Amor, Anis Ben-Haitra, Chalali, Wahbi Khazri, Meriah (all one).

Most assists: Ben Amor, Maloul (both 2).

THE KEY TARGETS

Anice Badri (£5.5m on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy) didn’t feature much in qualifying but has been a key figure for Tunisia in recent friendlies. The Esperance forward has scored in two of Tunisia’s last three matches, against Portugal and Turkey, adding to his one strike as a substitute in CAF Group A. Hitting form at the right time, Badri has started the last three friendlies as a wide forward, either on the left or right. His Fantasy appeal is furthered by McDonald’s classifying him as a midfielder on their official game, with a budget price fo just £5.5m. Badri could be an essential pick for anyone playing their Wildcard ahead of Gameround 3, Tunisia are set to play Panama.

Key midfielder Mohamed Amine Ben Amor (£5.0m) hasn’t featured in any of the World Cup warm-up starting line-ups but has recorded 65 minutes of football from two substitute appearances. The Etoile du Sahel man was involved in three goals during the six-match final qualification group, one scored himself and another two assisted. Whether he will return to the first XI for the first game against England is uncertain, but he is an important figure for Tunisia. But if the Eagles of Carthage are only on your radar as a team to invest in for their Gameround 3 fixture with Panama, by that point it may have become clearer whether or not Ben Amor is going to be involved in the starting XI.

Ever-present defender Ali Maaloul (£4.5m) could offer budget value in Tunisia’s back-line. The attack-minded left-back started every single qualifying match and contributed a pair of assists, home and away against Guinea. The 28-year-old was also the provider for Fakhreddine Ben Youssef’s equaliser against Portugal. Maloul is well-acquainted with finding the net too. In 143 league appearances for CS Sfaxien he scored a whopping 56 goals, a record for a defender in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1.

THE LONG SHOTS

Tunisia’s hopes of an unlikely progression from Group G at the World Cup rest on the shoulders of Wahbi Khazri (£6.5m). After being booed out of Sunderland back in August, the 27-year-old has revitalised his career in France on loan with Rennes. In 29 appearances in all competitions he found the net 11 times and assisted twice, operating successfully as a make-shift centre-forward. That has brought calls for Khazri to do the same for Tunisia at the World Cup. However, he has hardly proved his Fantasy pedigree at international level in the last two years. He started just half of the CAF Group A matches, scoring a penalty against Libya in 2016, and hasn’t registered any minutes in any of the World Cup warm-up matches as he recovers from a muscle fibre injury. But if he can replicate his club form in Russia then at £6.5m he could be an effective differential.

Expected to start on the opposite attacking flank to Badri is Lille’s Naim Sliti (£5.5m), he’s featured from the start in the last three friendlies. Unlike his aforementioned team-mate, he has been classified as a forward by McDonald’s and hasn’t scored for the national team since March 2017. However, he was the top-scorer for Tunisia as they made it to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations. Sliti found the net twice in Gabon and could prove himself again as a tournament player once again in Russia.

Starting XI is decent. Bench is too weak for it to be properly competitive though

I am the same opinion. Try to downgrade something to get money for your bench

Why do you need a strong bench?

Because in McD's fantasy you can replace players every day. So if somebody underperform, you can give him the boot and sub him by another from your bench.

Carrasco plays at LWB for Belgium - considering he'll be getting 0 points for clean sheets is 6.5 enough to justify attacking returns only?

Well he gets 1......I've said this throughout and there seems to be an abundance of loons here. Meunier all the way

Meunier is nailed in my team and is an outstanding option.

But just because he is amazing, and Carrasco is a worse option than him, that doesn't make Carrasco terrible.

He got a fairly decent amount of attacking returns in qualifying, and has great first two fixtures.

He's not currently in my team but I wouldn't be so dismissive

I'm very dismissive of any reverse OOP player. I've got Carrillo placeholding 5.5 reverse OOP but that's a different price bracket to Carrasco.

It's the same argument as FPL with Alonso getting bonus clean sheets being a logical pick.

Maybe look at Morroco MIDs v Iran - think Carrasco is still an OK pick as despite playing wingback his stats are good from quals and easy fixtures

Ziyach 7.0 playmaker pens FKs etc
      Belhanda 5.5 playing #10 reportedly

    Hello!
    My current squad:

    Caballero, Uzoho
    Marcelo, Danilo, Kimmich, Meunier, Tagliafico
    Kvist, Isco, Muller, Nandez, Miranchuk
    Mbappe, Jesus, Cavani

    How does it look?
    Options:
    Carrasco to Miranchuk
    Caballero to Szczesny
Marcelo to Mojica and upgrade the midfield massively

The idea is to exploit the clean sheets of big teams in the first rounds, then switch to 3-4-3 later on. Early WC and BB right after. BC at the later stages.

All depends when you plan to WC etc would prefer JRod over Muller/Couts to start with but again depends if you setting your team up for R1/R2/R3 and whats your planned 1 transfer for R1

Kimmich-------> Mojica(4.5 nailed in team fav to win grp)

is Ndiaye nailed? not sure, prefer Aldawsari or C.Sanchez

Carrasco is an ok pick-good qual stats even if he is reverse OOP as LWB, I like Belhanda

Not convinced FRA are going to score loads but I can see why the Mbappe pick

Bottomed on previous page so reposting.

Taking on board helpful comments here that cheap defenders better value than cheap midfielders and to have stronger bench particularly for later games in round (so JRod Lukaku Meunier) who can sub in later. If Varane not fit Mojica comes in.

Any major weakness here? - particularly should I bring Müller or Werner in for anyone as no Germany cover?

    Muslera Uzoho
    Meunier Danilo Mendy Varane Hakimi
    JRod Coutinho Ziyach Cueva Aldawsari
    Lukaku Cavani Mbappe

That defence isn't poor! It's actually pretty strong!

After a lot of research and overthinking, I would appreciate if you could give me your opinion on this team. Plan is to transfer Hegazy for Advincula in round 2 and WC in round 3. Two remaining chips for later stages.

    Muslera-Uzoho

    Danilo-Hummels-Meunier-Advincula-Mojica

    Eriksen-Isco-James Rodriguez-Nandez-Aldawsari

    Mbappe-Cavani-Jesus

Thanks for your input, have a good WC.

I don't think Hummels is good value but other than that looks very good

Advincula vs Denmark is a better option than Hegazy vs Uruguay for me. Definitely not worth planning a transfer on a 4.5 defender either way - someone is bound to come up who you want to get more than a Peruvian RB.
Overall, it's a very solid team though. Not sure Hummels is the best value for money but it's a minor complaint.

Dalsgard vs Peru better IMO than Advincula

Thanks for the replies. The Hegazy plan is for round 2 and 3 vs Russia and Saudi Arabia instead of Advincula facing France in round 2. The plan will go ahead if no other rpessing issue.

Still undecided on Hummels, any alternative for 6.0? Godin could be an option but where should I spend the 0.5?

Any changes you would make to this team?
    Muslera
    Kimmich Meunier Dalsgaard Godin Hakimi
    Samedov (C) Eriksen
    Cavani Lukaku Werner

    Bench: Uzoho JRod Ndiaye Sanchez

Aiming to WC directly in GW2. So checking on better short term options on GW1 only.

First draft, how is she looking?

    Muslera
    Danilo - D.Sanchez - Trippier - Meunier
Lo Celso - JRod - Coutinho
    Mbappe - Cavani - Lukaku
    (Uzoho - Varela - Casemiro - Aldawsari)
    No Spain, Portugal or Germany.
Plan is WC after round 2 when bringing them in.
    Cheers and GL!

    Muslera
    Meunier • Danilo • Godin • Ladsgaard
    Isco • James • Paulinho
    Werner • Lukaku • Cavani

    (Uzoho / Aldawsari / Advincula / C.Sanchez)

    Cheers! 🙂

The German team shared goals throughout the qualifiers and Löw likes to rotate, so I'd look to change Werner.

I'd also pick Willian over Paulinho.

This is interesting, haven't seen Willian being suggested around here at all. Why hasn't he been considered? Could be quality

I rate Willian over both Paulinho and Cout. Think ppl here are negatively biased due to FPL/EPL experience. W plays further ahead than both others. He had 4 goals and 5 assists in 11 games in qual. Paulinho had 6g 2a in 11 and is cheaper than Couthinho.

Might be more prone to being subbed though, but I expect him to do well

He started 11/18 - as many as Paulinho and more than Jesus for example in qualifiers and I think hes started 4/5 latest friendlies

Willian could be a good pick and I don't see the appeal in Paulinho at 8.5 in comparison but Coutinho is clearly the much better player. He has more goals and assists in him than Willian and qualification is not the same as a world cup. I could also see Coutinho being moved up and Fernandinho slotting in for the more important games.

Agree Coutinho is a better player, but given Wwill play further up and is cheaper is the deciding factors for me. You might be right about cout playing more advanced, but he clearly favors playing on the left and being able to cut in with his right foot, Neymar also favors playing on the left and the times I've seen Willian make way it's been for Costa. Not saying it won't happen though 🙂

Yeah that's fair. It will be interesting to see when/how Costa features.

Willian (who now looks pretty much nailed as Brazil don't really have any other in that position) & Couts got well forward yday in the friendly, Paulinho not so much(although his qual stats by far the best). I'd still lean Couts though just for his quality-is he more likely to score a creamer v a Willian or Paulinho tap in.......who knows

Solid mate. How about Coutinho instead of Paulinho? Now I still cant decide between Muller and Werner.

    Caballero
    Godin, Danilo, Mojica
    Muller, Alli, Milinkovic-Savic, Ziyech
    Griezmann, Lukaku, Jesus

    Uzoho, Kudriashov, Sabaly, C. Sanchez

    1m to spare

What would you do with it?

I really don't get why Willian isn't in more teams, better choice then both Cout and Paulinho to me.

Suarez not that weird; Cavani cheaper and scored more in qual.

      Kun not expected to start.

Pogba could be a dark horse, but uncertainty around his form

But Sterling...?! Price at 9.0 ... I think... great shape... think he will be play secondary forward... and Tunis and Panama is not such a heavy opponent...

Why no love for De Bruyne, the guy has been class all season for City, will likely be on free kicks and is usually amongst assists and can chip in with a goal.
