The lack of Premier League football last weekend may have forced many into making their transfers early, but for anyone still clinging onto a free transfer for this Gameweek and mulling over a last minute swap, we’re about to muddy the waters even further by throwing a few curveballs at you. If you’re after a logical, carefully planned choice then look no further than the Scout Picks. The “Differentials” on the other hand are the balls out, wildcard picks that could prove to be a stroke of genius or a moment of insanity. They say it’s a fine line between the two, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…..

Gary Gardner

He may still be waiting for his first Premier League goal, but Gary Gardner has shown more than enough promise in his early career to merit his inclusion in the Differential picks this week. Arguably the most coveted of Villa’s Academy starlets, Gardner captained the Villa youth team during the 09/10 season, firing in 14 goals from central midfield in the first five months of the season before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the next year. After returning from injury in January 2010, Gardner continued where he left off, picking up another five goals for the reserves including two goals and two assists in a 10-1 thrashing of Arsenal, and this season Gardner has racked up a total of 13 goals for England U21’s, the Villa youth team and the reserves.

Moving up to the Premier League is obviously a big step but Gardner has more than held his own in his first couple of games for the senior team, and looks like an excellent prospect. As well as a great scoring record, Gardner is known as a bit of a free kick specialist, and also offers the future potential of penalties if he can establish himself fully into the first team. We can’t expect Mcleish to grant us that little bonus just yet, but seeing as Villa take on two of the leagues leakiest defences in Wigan and Blackburn next, an early punt could still pay dividends and his budget price of just 4.5 and low ownership of 0.1% could make him a great differential.

Papiss Cisse

Alan Pardew looks set to hand a first home start to Papiss Cisse this weekend, as Newcastle host Wolves. Both teams suffered five goal thrashings last time out, but the return of Yohan Cabaye, Ryan Taylor and Cheick Tiote means Pardew is able to field his strongest side, and with all due respect to Wolves, Newcastle should find it a lot easier going this weekend.

After such an impressive start to the season, overlooking Demba Ba and opting for his Senegalese strike partner would be a very bold choice. That said, it is only the presence of Ba that has prevented Cisse from being a lot more popular; Cisse actually has a better scoring record at international level and as the second top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, he looks like a very strong pick in his own right. With two home games up next, goals will surely fall to one or both strikers; priced at just 7.0 and with an ownership of just 1.2% compared to Ba’s 25.4%, Papiss Cisse would prove to be a huge differential should the goals go his way.

Mario Balotelli

The unpredictable nature of Mario Balotelli may put off the vast majority of Fantasy managers, but there is no denying the Italian’s explosive potential, and a home tie against Blackburn could pay huge dividends to anyone brave enough to take a punt. Sergio Aguero is the safe option of course, but over a third of all managers in the FPL game now own the Argentinian and if he were to have an off day, or (say it quietly) get rested, then the 1.3% of managers with Balotelli would be laughing all the way to the bank.

After sitting out the last three league fixtures through suspension, we’re putting our money on Balotelli making the starting lineup this week, but even if he is restricted to a late cameo, he’s proven more than capable of picking up points after coming off the bench; three of his nine league goals have come from appearances of 30 minutes or less. Priced at just 8.0, it’s got to be worth a pop hasn’t it?

Ofcourse. I reckon with players like Wotton and Chadwick we'll survive this season. Then hopefully start building up again. Horrid last few years, it only seems like yesterday we were in the quarter finals of the FA cup against Birmingham and despite being the better team we were denied the semis by Ben Foster! We were a comfortable top half championship team back then. Bah! So much for the 5-year plan to get into the premiership!

that was Watford not Birmingham though! Yep it was not long ago everyone was talking about possible promotion. After last weekend finally have more than just hope that we will survive. Perhaps the good o'll days that Luggy brought (first time round!) might come back if we can build for the future properly!

I know that is the problem. Would love to get Rooney, wish he wld have started scoring while I had him! Might change for Aguero soon. Getting fletcher out is most obvious, but unlikely to play whoever it is anyway, just not enough to get Cisse in annoyingly.

I was going to suggest saving a free so you could downgrade someone to afford Ba but looking at your team I'm not sure who I'd downgrade and you don't want to miss Newcastle's fixture this week. Go for it.

What are people doing with Enrique? I was planning on holding him through his dodgy fixtures and blank but looking at his fixtures he's going to be benched for the next 3 and there was a suggestion that the Everton game would go into GW29 so no DGW until the postponed game originally scheduled for GW29 goes ahead. He's my 2nd most expensive defender, don't think I can keep benching him.

I reckon you should take him out, what did you buy him for?

GW29/30 onwards is a good time to bring back the Liverpool defence, and Enrique will probably fall again tonight down to 5.8.

I bought at 5.0, sold at 6, and am waiting for him to fall to get him back in future I reckon, Liverpool defence is a fairly solid unit

I have Bosingwa but didnt mind when he got injured as it made it a straight forward decision of picking Taiwo, Simpson and Kompany for my back three but I also have Fletcher up front and with him being 50/50 I'm really not sure what to do now. My other two bench players are Dyer and Kelly. Should I
    a) stick with what I have, hoping fletcher plays but with Dyer to come in anyway.
    b) get rid of just fletcher for 5.8m plus I have 0.6m in the bank (not sure who to get in for this amount)
    c) get rid of just Bosingwa for Jevans/Cahill/other
    d) get rid or Bosingwa and fletcher for possibly Jevans and Zamora, taking a 4pt hit but prob benching Evans
    e) any other suggestion?

    Sorensen Mignolet
    Raylor, Santon, Enrique, Evans, Caulker
    Silva, Bale, Sessegnon, Dempsey, Valencia
    Aguero, Yakubu, RVP

    2 free transfers. Really difficult.

I really want to keep Yak as a differential over Ba and Raylor covers some of that.

Kompany in for Enrique probably although Yaya is another option.

Not sure about dropping Valencia really. GW29 is playing on my mind. If the fixture list doesn't get filled out were really struggling. Siggy is a good shout of course and he defo has a fixture GW29.

Could also downgrade Silva to Yaya or Sessegnon to McClean.

Ba and Yaya were on my radar two weeks back but I couldn't part with either Silva or Graham to do so. I wouldn't ship Silva before two juicy home games for City.

I'm holding onto Valencia (purely to help me with my difficult bench decision). Kompany in for Enrique looks the right (if boring) thing to do.

I am not thinking as far ahead as gw 29 - should I ?

Valencia and Enrique to Sigs and Komps?

That's generic, but could pay off, benching Sig this week

That is difficult. The only advice I can honestly give is on Valencia. I say keep him. Hopefully he'll be back next week and even if not, his fixtures pick up remarkably from the week after that onwards - a time when United attacking coverage might just be essential.

Oh BTW I cannot afford to do a straight swap. if Kompany comes in, then I must free up 1.1m in funds.

Yes it was an important omission, whoops.

Swapping Sess for McClean isn't the best move whilst Sunderland have no game GW29. Sess for Siggy makes more sense I think.

Nah doesn't make sense to lose Dempsey, he has good fixtures and crucially a GW29. Not really interested in Mata whilst Chelsea struggle to fire.

      I agree with keeping Valencia

If you are worried about this GW maybe

      Enrique > Cahill

Save your free transfer until next week.

I am assuming that your are trying freeing up cash for Rooney in 28.

    Van Persie Ba (c)

Why let him go, we needed him!

    -----------Szczesny
    Sagna---Kos-----Verm---Gibbs
    ------Arteta---Song
    Oxlade------------------Gervinho
    --------------Arshavin--------------
    --------RVP (C)

This would have worked in my opinion. Lazy yes, but he gets goals and assists.

Thats the thing, he was never played as an CAM at Arsenal. Now is the perfect opportunity for him to play there, Ramsey is off form and Rosicky offers nothing in that role. Arshavin - Started 70 matches and subbed on 28 times (98 total matches); 23 goals and 37 assists.

Kelly, Caulker, Richards, Simpson and Shotton. Was originally looking to get out Shotton for J. Evans but after reading the scout picks am now thinking of G. Cahill instead. Can anyone convince me either way with a view for a mid-term option?
