The lack of Premier League football last weekend may have forced many into making their transfers early, but for anyone still clinging onto a free transfer for this Gameweek and mulling over a last minute swap, we’re about to muddy the waters even further by throwing a few curveballs at you. If you’re after a logical, carefully planned choice then look no further than the Scout Picks. The “Differentials” on the other hand are the balls out, wildcard picks that could prove to be a stroke of genius or a moment of insanity. They say it’s a fine line between the two, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…..

Gary Gardner

He may still be waiting for his first Premier League goal, but Gary Gardner has shown more than enough promise in his early career to merit his inclusion in the Differential picks this week. Arguably the most coveted of Villa’s Academy starlets, Gardner captained the Villa youth team during the 09/10 season, firing in 14 goals from central midfield in the first five months of the season before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the next year. After returning from injury in January 2010, Gardner continued where he left off, picking up another five goals for the reserves including two goals and two assists in a 10-1 thrashing of Arsenal, and this season Gardner has racked up a total of 13 goals for England U21’s, the Villa youth team and the reserves.

Moving up to the Premier League is obviously a big step but Gardner has more than held his own in his first couple of games for the senior team, and looks like an excellent prospect. As well as a great scoring record, Gardner is known as a bit of a free kick specialist, and also offers the future potential of penalties if he can establish himself fully into the first team. We can’t expect Mcleish to grant us that little bonus just yet, but seeing as Villa take on two of the leagues leakiest defences in Wigan and Blackburn next, an early punt could still pay dividends and his budget price of just 4.5 and low ownership of 0.1% could make him a great differential.

Papiss Cisse

Alan Pardew looks set to hand a first home start to Papiss Cisse this weekend, as Newcastle host Wolves. Both teams suffered five goal thrashings last time out, but the return of Yohan Cabaye, Ryan Taylor and Cheick Tiote means Pardew is able to field his strongest side, and with all due respect to Wolves, Newcastle should find it a lot easier going this weekend.

After such an impressive start to the season, overlooking Demba Ba and opting for his Senegalese strike partner would be a very bold choice. That said, it is only the presence of Ba that has prevented Cisse from being a lot more popular; Cisse actually has a better scoring record at international level and as the second top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, he looks like a very strong pick in his own right. With two home games up next, goals will surely fall to one or both strikers; priced at just 7.0 and with an ownership of just 1.2% compared to Ba’s 25.4%, Papiss Cisse would prove to be a huge differential should the goals go his way.

Mario Balotelli

The unpredictable nature of Mario Balotelli may put off the vast majority of Fantasy managers, but there is no denying the Italian’s explosive potential, and a home tie against Blackburn could pay huge dividends to anyone brave enough to take a punt. Sergio Aguero is the safe option of course, but over a third of all managers in the FPL game now own the Argentinian and if he were to have an off day, or (say it quietly) get rested, then the 1.3% of managers with Balotelli would be laughing all the way to the bank.

After sitting out the last three league fixtures through suspension, we’re putting our money on Balotelli making the starting lineup this week, but even if he is restricted to a late cameo, he’s proven more than capable of picking up points after coming off the bench; three of his nine league goals have come from appearances of 30 minutes or less. Priced at just 8.0, it’s got to be worth a pop hasn’t it?

Here is my problem, I want Kompany over Richards but can't afford him with one transfer. I also plan to bring in R Taylor next gw. Should I bring in R Taylor first and then get Kompany or get both for a 4pt hit since they both have good fixtures?

One at a time. They'll both have to score in order to draw even. And if either gets scored upon, you're in the hole. Tough to get ahead with both unless they get CSs and one scores.

I'd stick with the single transfer.

Kun also has the international friendly against Swiss on 29th.. That means, if he plays today, he will be playing 3 matches in 7 days.. I don't think Mancini will risk that.. or even Kun can play that to his full potential.. 3 matches in 7 days..

Argentina will def want him fully fit and rested..

He's played like 30mins off the bench in the last 3 games, he hasn't started since they beat Fulham, Balotelli was suspended for the matches Dzeko started.

Does anyone else think Ba may actually suffer now the formation has changed to accomodate Cisse? Ba thrived of lots of players feeding him, they didnt score together in African Cup of Nations, and Newc lost 5-0 or whatever it was when Pards tried it. I for one think captaining Rooney this week is a good idea... everyone will (c) Ba and I don't like it one bit I tell ya 😉

Newcastle will not change their formation for Cisse. 4-4-2 before Cisse, 4-4-2 now that he is here. Even when Leon Best was scoring, Ba wasn't affected much: why would he be affected, now?

They weren't poor against Spurs because the of strikers. They were poor because they couldn't even get a foothold in midfield. Cabaye and Raylor will change that.

I can see Cisse will playing up front, with Ba in the hole. That's how they started the spurs game but without Cheick and Yohan in MF it pretty much went unnoticed. I'm pretty sure Pardew will want to try it again now they're back and can produce decent deliveries.

Both look like decent points prospects but Ba may be more assists than goals.

I'm not so sure about that ManU CS. Norwich might be weak at the back but they look strong up front these days. Spurs are no more likely to hold back Arsenal but BAE is a decent attack prospect.

I'm playing him and benching Evans.

Forget all the ifs n buts.. If I was in Mancini's shoes, I would play Kun and Balo this week. Good game for balo to come back considering at home and against a depleted BBurn defence. Also if City have got 2 by half time then I can pull Kun off then and bring Dzeko on. They gota get the job done before thinking about resting players imo.

    Makes sense no?

no. they HAVE to think they'd win with any players from their squad. I'd expect Savic, Dzeko, Johnson, Nasri, De Jong. That kind of thing.

Evans is now a first team regular. People should think of him as a 6 Mil DEF, not a benchable option. Would you ever bench Rio (when he was younger and fitter that is)

    Ok, Im done.

Dzeko to Ba, Valencia to Mata. Resisted the urge to do an 8 pointer for Kun, so took 4 pt hit but bought in 2 players I can play every week who have games in GW29.

Now, do I captain Ba or Silva?

        Thanks chaps.

City players all potentially being rotation risks with the number of successive games they'll be playing (inc Internationals) and Aguero not being so hot away from home made my 'common sense' head go for Ba as a better long term choice rather than a 2 week punt on Kun.

Mata has flattered to deceive FPL wise, but has a good run of games now and I don't need Man Utd coverage until GW29. I'll probably save my transfer this upcoming week and then get Man Utd cover in GW28.

          bought for the future 😉

In my experience, buying top players for games against weak opposition at teams that rotate is a mistake. best players? Sess, Demps (who i dont own tho!), etc who dont rotate and score all the time. MUN players are a good option because I think SAF would rest in Europa and not PL.

...and he missed out last time. I say Richards is the most likely for 90, then Aguero, then Silva. But it's anyone's guess who starts. I hate Mancini's pack shuffling... I could never have 3 city, it would drive me nuts!

I literally just got Ba in for the first time this season too, but I don't think either of us have made a bad choice there, BMB100.

Vorm in goal, that game could end up 0-0, but you'd expect QPR at home and needing a win to score at least once.

Bench Maclean as you have Sess to cover Sunderland attacking points.

At 6.8M you might as well play Hart every week. I would not upgrade sub GK (Down grade to Bogden if you need to free up cash)
Bale/BAE have really tough GW's ahead.
      Not Sold of OX Yet
      No RVP or Rooney

      .Honestly man maybe 5/10.

Just my opinion. Of coure you will probably out perform my team over the rest of the season.
