World Cup Fantasy managers will now have to choose between backing Brazil or Belgium in the quarter-finals.

That may prove something of a dilemma considering they have both been reliable sources of points at the tournament so far.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from the latest set of last sixteen fixtures.

BRAZIL 2-0 MEXICO

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Neymar (£12.0m) – 6 points
  • Willian (£8.4m)- 6 points
  • Thiago Silva (£6.1m) – 6 points
  • Alisson (£6.0m) – 6 points
  • Joao Miranda (£5.6m) – 6 points
  • Fagner (£5.1m) – 6 points
  • Roberto Firmino (£8.3m) – 5 points
  • Filipe Luis (£6.0m) – 5 points

Neymar (£12.0m) got his second of the World Cup as Brazil were able to get past Mexico without reaching their scintillating best.

The Selecao had to be patient after Mexico matched the former champions in the first-half. The central Americans also deployed an interesting tactical ploy for corners, by leaving most of their attacking players on the half-way line to commit Brazil’s centre-backs away from the penalty area.

It was Neymar’s skill that made the difference in the end, though. He had the ball on the edge of the box in the 51st minute and drove across the edge of the ‘D’, committing three defenders before back-heeling to an unmarked Willian (£8.4m).

The Chelsea man pushed on into the penalty area unchallenged and whipped a ball across the box where Neymar had reached the back-post to finish.

Brazil’s second came in the 88th minute after Roberto Firmino (£8.3m) had come on for Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), whose blank against Mexico was his first of the tournament.

Neymar’s shot from the left forced a decent save out of Guillermo Ochoa (£5.1m), removing a potential assist on McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy, before Firmino completed a routine finish.

BRAZIL XI (4-4-2): Alisson; Filipe Luis, Joao Miranda, Thiago Silva, Fagner; Coutinho (Roberto Firmino 86’), Casemiro, Paulinho (Fernandinho 80’), Willian (Marquinhos 91’); Neymar, Gabriel Jesus.

MEXICO XI (4-3-3): Ochoa; Gallardo, Salcedo, Ayala, Alvarez (J dos Santos 55’); Guardado, Marquez (Layun 45’), Herrera; Vela, Hernandez (Jimenez 60’), Lozano.

BELGIUM 3-2 JAPAN

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Genki Haraguchi (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Takashi Inui (£4.6m) – 7 points
  • Marouane Fellaini (£6.9m) – 6 points
  • Nacer Chadli (£6.8m) – 6 points
  • Eden Hazard (£10.1m) – 5 points
  • Shinji Kagawa (£6.4m) – 5 points
  • Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) – 4 points
  • Gaku Shibasaki (£5.0m) – 4 points

Fantasy managers who had captained Romelu Lukaku (£10.1m) were left a little frustrated as he registered no returns in a match with five goal-scorers.

Japan raced into a 2-0 lead at the start of the second-half with several budget options delivering points. In the 48th minute Gaku Shibasaki (£5.0m) sent Genki Haraguchi (£5.9m) through, whose fierce shot across goal nestled in the bottom left-hand corner of Thibaut Courtois’ (£6.0m) goal.

Four minutes later, Shinji Kagawa (£6.5m) teed up Takashi Inui (£4.6m) on the edge of the box who thumped the ball into the bottom right-hand corner. Belgium were stunned but still managed to fight back as Maroune Fellaini (£6.9m) and Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) came on for Yannick Carrasco (£6.5m) and Dries Mertens (£9.0m).

Those changes were in response to Japan putting high pressure on Belgium’s wing-backs, who could be at risk of rotation in future rounds accordingly.

Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) got the Red Devils back into the game in the 69th minute with a looping header from the edge of the box which caught Eiji Kawashima (£4.4m) off-guard. Shortly after, Fellaini’s towering header from an Eden Hazard (£10.1m) cross hit the back of the net to make it 2-2.

Belgium’s winner was scored with virtually the last kick of the game. Japan had committed men forward to a corner in the 96th minute and were hit on the counter. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.9m) played the all-important pass out wide to Thomas Meunier (£6.0m), whose square ball across the box was left by Lukaku and turned in by Chadli.

BELGIUM XI (3-4-2-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld; Carrasco (Chadli 65’), Witsel, De Bruyne, Meunier; Hazard, Mertens (Fellaini 65’); Lukaku.

JAPAN XI (4-2-3-1): Kawashima; Nagatomo, Shoji, Yoshida, H Sakai; Shibasaki (Yamaguchi 81’), Hasebe; Inui, Kagawa, Haraguchi (Honda 81’); Osako.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

About a month ago I made a Hot Topic asking for user suggestions about ways to improve the Community and the site. In addition to responses on site I received many emails from users talking about things that they hoped could be changed or improved.

So far, we’ve mostly been working on behind the scenes fixes and tweaks; things that help the site run better, help mods do their job, and prepare us for future changes.

This will now start to turn towards more visible site changes.

Last night two fixes were implemented.

    Undo upvote
Previously it wasn’t possible to remove an upvote that was given – it is now possible. As some have noticed, mod accounts haven’t had downvotes removed, and though they have been instructed not to use them it sometimes happens accidentally – they are now able to undo those accidental downvotes. There are likely more changes on voting to come.

    New comment category
The second change is a little more substantial. It’s now possible for Admins to make ‘Members Only’ comments. For now, this will be something that is used rarely and in specific situations. It will be used, for example, when there is a Members Only article that talks about Members data or tables. A Members Only comment will be posted soon after article publication so that Members can discuss the data that is only available for them. These comments will often be Hot Topics.

Though I’m aware of calls for Members Only chat areas I’m equally aware of the concerns others have about this type of space dividing the community. I hope the Members Only comments will be a good starting middle-ground that doesn’t unnecessarily split the Community while still allowing Members to talk about FPL data freely. These comments will still be modded and users will be expected, as usual, to mostly stay on topic and to keep conversation focused and useful. These new Members Only comments will have a gold ribbon running across the top of the comment. When scrolling down a page, the gold bar should be fairly visible.

These two things were requested by a few different users and were changes that we could go ahead with while there was a lot of work going on for the World Cup. Now that they have been implemented we’re moving on to the next round of changes.

    More on that to come!

If anyone finds that one of these fixes has broken anything, or they aren’t working, please email me and we will make the necessary alterations.

Also, email me if you have further suggestions, queries, or concerns: Geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Would be nice if the hover over tool tip for removing the upvote said something like 'Undo upvote' instead of still saying 'Vote up' but the feature seems to work nicely - I like it.

Will be interesting to see the members only comments at play and how/if that changes the dynamic.

Yeah, it'll be used sparingly at first.

If the comments stay mostly on topic then I'll feel more comfortable having more of them but if it turns into members only using those threads and talking about things that are off topic I'll have to keep them very limited

For voting the green now means you've given an upvote while grey means you haven't. Before, the upvote on a comment was always green and then disappeared after use. But I definitely take your point on the hover over tool tip

That's the obvious risk but hopefully they are well used and don't require much supervision.

Sorry I didn't say hello on Saturday by the way, didn't cotton on to who you were until you were leaving!

            No problem 😀

*Actually, the comment I upvoted turned from green to grey when I hovered over it, while other comments turn from grey to green when I hover over them.
Since the comment I upvoted had been hulked, I couldn't tell what colour it was before I hovered over it.

Yes, exactly. Hovering over a comment changes the arrow to the colour it would be if you were to click it.

An arrow is green if you've upvoted, grey if you haven't.

So the stickied comments have grey arrows, unless you upvote. Then it turns green just as it does with non-stickied upvotes, and that green is a slightly darker shade of green than the green of the Sticky.

Hovering over an upvote on a stickied post shows it as grey because that's what it would be if you clicked it again.

      Brilliant changes, cheers Geoff.

Love the Members comment idea, which is probably the best middle-ground compromise you can get betwee offering a platform and not splitting the community. Will Members' comments be visible in their history on their profile if you're a Member too?

You spotted the last bit of it that we're working on 😀

Right now the Members Only Post wouldn't be visible on site for non-members but would be visible if they went to a user's profile page. It would be a lot of work for a non-member to sort through all the comments to re-create a coherent discussion, but it's not an ideal situation.

For this reason there probably won't be a Members Only comment on the upcoming Member Only article, we'd like to sort that first

          And that's sorted now.

Members Only comments will be visible on individual profiles for other members, but not visible for non-members

There are ways that this could work but it's not a priority right now.

It would require significant back end work to make sure we could track what was originally said, so users don't use it to post content and disguise it later, never mind the work to make it possible.

It would also need a fairly short period of time after where alterations could be made, and a post would need to be locked after one response so replies continue to make sense.

Thanks Geoff, nice updates. I know it's a tough one (and I'm sure loads have emailed you on it), but there must be a way to improve articles from being bombarded with RMT posts? At certain times of the year it becomes almost unbearable and will be worse next season with the increased traffic on here.

Yeah that's definitely something we're trying to sort out. Lots of ideas but it's a really tough one.

I do suggest using the Sort by Rating function.. we're looking at ways to get voting to mean more, as it's essentially users having the ability to be site curators. Sort by Rating ideally gives you at least a page or two of really well rated content, after which it's sorted by date.

Not saying that's the best, or the permanent solution, but something to try if you haven't 🙂

As you werent around at the time. The testing of the voting was sensational, mainly because the testers all engaged with the voting system and so the self curating worked. It quickly died out when it went live as very few adopted it.

Yeah, in theory it has so much potential.

I'm working to make it possible for users to choose which Sort By setting they want as default, should be fairly straight forward.

It would also be possible to have it Sort By Rating as default for all users, and then users opt out to Sort By Date if they choose.

The main thing though is reminding people about the sorting and encouraging voting. Hot Topic tomorrow. Any ideas about how to get people to adopt it?

Its a changing hearts and minds one, takes a long time and just needs to be continuously reminded until the community as a whole forget there is a different way. Its just gonna take time.

If Sort By Rating was the default, would the default current comment be the one with the highest rating for the current article rather than on the current page?
And might this mean that new comments on later pages all go to the end of the list, no-one looks at them, and they never even get rated?
Also, would the order of comments keep changing while looking through them?

We could do whatever we want really, it's all to be discussed and figured out if we end up going that way.

Right now, the order of the comments doesn't keep changing as you're looking through them, as the site doesn't refresh itself. In Sort by Rating, the rated posts appear at the front and then it reverts to Sort by Date after those posts. So I usually go through the first few pages to see what is relevant and highly rated, before going to the last pages to see the new stuff, where I then stay.

I also find Hot Topics this way: good posts that deserve Hot Topics are often voted for often

Yeah, before it had to be removed.

Definitely hoping to have that as an option. A submitted comment would have to be approved by a mod, otherwise you're right it would be abused by members who only want replies from members, but that's the goal. If all goes well with them for now that's the next step

        I don't think I understand!

Normal comments will be visible for all, and a small section of comments will be Members Only comments. It won't impact anything except that non-members won't be able to see those comments, they will see a message that says: 'This content is restricted to Members.' The content in these comments will be content that talks about Members data, the stuff that non-members can't access anyway.

The change let's members take full advantage of the data that they are provided with, the RMT tool, comparison tool, members tables, etc. By talking about them members will be able to use the members area more effectively. At the same time, the impact on non-members should be minimal

Why didn’t RLC get the assist for Kane’s third against Panama? Was it because his shot was going out for a throw before it hit Kane?

Assists will be credited to a player on basis of the official statistics of a match as published on FIFA.com.

    if I stick it's 10+2 a net loss of 3 pts.

Been giving this one some thought today. If Switzerland & England get through I'm keeping it for the SFs. Seem the ideal time thinking about it as we are sure of the players for two rounds thanks to the third place playoff!

Exactly at the same question. With England through I have 10 players (11 with Switzerland). In the end I'd be wildcarding to get mostly the same team, and maybe a better bench.

If England goes through I might just accept going with Quintero, Inui and Akanji on the bench.

You'll easily have 15 if the Swiss go through so I don't see the reason to wildcard. I bet you picked Golovin as a one-week punt to be transferred out after their inevitable loss to Spain 😉

      1. Pierce34
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

Ah, didn't realise you had already made your transfers. Depends - for me 13 players is the tipping point on whether to wildcard or not.

I had a Russian who stayed on the bench so upgraded him to Golovin (you never know with the home crowd behind them!). This is my team -4 atm. Took out my two Spaniards and Cavani (who is strongly rumoured to be out for the QF, although I might have jumped the gun on that one!). So if Sweden win I'll need to WC if not I'll save it for the SFs.

I definitely think this game has shown the disadvantage to bonus points. The element of luck in captain picks is already mildly annoying if you flip that coin wrongly a few times but surely there's already enough advantage in picking a guy that hauls without giving him an extra assist free.

The points are much flatter in FWC and that makes every point more important to scrap for. Bookings really hurt in FWC.

I wouldn't support the idea of manual subs for FPL because it is too much of an advantage for sad g1ts like us but I would support other changes like removing FK assists and bonus points. I'm even in favour of adding pen win points after VAR removes the possibility of cheating winning too many.

I think FPL can learn from other games. I'd be interested in seeing what tweaks others would like, given we've now had a lot of this comp to judge.

Totally agree on all points. I much prefer the manual captain changes (instead of C and VC) and subs as well, but can understand why FPL wouldn't want to go down that route.

Fixing the random assists would be a good start.

I think bonus points would make the FWC game better. The MC chip is def better than the TC chip in FPL though. I agree that manual subs wouldn't really suit FPL but I do think captaincy twists would be a nice addition.

and pen win points are a great idea and one FPl should incorporate!

My thinking is that captain flip is as arduous as manual subs to be honest.

I agree that max cap is a great chip to replace TC as it is a definite large boost. Only thing is that it's almost a free win chip in cup!

Yeah, you're probably right about the captaincy twists! Suits the WC group stage format but prob wouldn't suit FPL tbh!

2 points for drawing a penalty would be a great addition to FPL imo

I'd scrap the FPL assist system because I don't trust them and it's utter dross. I prefer this world cup one. Also they seem to get more right imo. Subjective maybe

Why shouldn't sad gits like us get an advantage? We put the time and effort in? I'm paying 100 quid to enter a ml I want to be able to research and spend time planning knowing that some geezer who logs in once a week isn't going to have the same advantage, if you get me . I'd love the manual subs to end the points off bench which is the one thing id change if I could change one thing in FPL.

You go away for a holiday and lose loads of ground. It's too labour intensive for a nine month game.

May be. They should just bring UFPL back then to be honest

Agree. I loved that game and was shocked they didn't give it time to bed in. Rare commercial error by PL in my opinion. They could easily have charged a tenner.

It's not that sad g1ts don't have a life, it's that we can't separate it from FPL 😉

Honestly, I've never been happier being a sad g1t.

It helped me get over a 9 year sports betting addiction. 13 months gamble-free and that's mainly down to taking FPL seriously. Gives you that interest on the weekend without spunking money.

Well done mate, same here was a very heavy gambler up to about 4-5 years ago (football, horse racing, poker, blackjack, etc)! I don't miss it at all now tbh, although I did for a while!

4-5 years is inspiring, hopefully I can say the same eventually. I know what you mean... now and again I miss it. I still look at odds sometimes out of interest, but now have the self control to leave it alone.

Here's to many more years being a sad g1t on FPL... it's much cheaper.

It really was soul destroying although I didn't realise it at the time. I had a wake up call thankfully! When I go home and see the young lads losing their week's wages gambling in the local boozer it makes me sad! A horrible horrible addiction that we need much more awareness about in society!

Because "sad gits like us" already have a massive advantage through early lineups whenever they appear, spreadsheets and autistic information from even sadder twitter gits, the info gained from watching 4-5 games each gameweek, and just generally spending time on sites like FFS.

At a certain point the advantage gets too big for casuals to bother. At my work place, theres a lot of semi casuals who watch a game or two each game week but put in less effort. None of them wanted to play the McDs Fantasy game once they heard about the subs and captain changes. Which means people like me who could have put in effort and crushed them ended up not even having a work league for the official World Cup Fantasy Game. We ended up playing the Norwegian world cup game instead, which is a lot more similar to FPL and more casual friendly.

It was when I signed up for Eliteserien that I truly realised I was a sad git.

          I embrace my sad gittery.
