The lack of Premier League football last weekend may have forced many into making their transfers early, but for anyone still clinging onto a free transfer for this Gameweek and mulling over a last minute swap, we’re about to muddy the waters even further by throwing a few curveballs at you. If you’re after a logical, carefully planned choice then look no further than the Scout Picks. The “Differentials” on the other hand are the balls out, wildcard picks that could prove to be a stroke of genius or a moment of insanity. They say it’s a fine line between the two, but hindsight is a wonderful thing…..

Gary Gardner

He may still be waiting for his first Premier League goal, but Gary Gardner has shown more than enough promise in his early career to merit his inclusion in the Differential picks this week. Arguably the most coveted of Villa’s Academy starlets, Gardner captained the Villa youth team during the 09/10 season, firing in 14 goals from central midfield in the first five months of the season before a serious knee injury ruled him out for the next year. After returning from injury in January 2010, Gardner continued where he left off, picking up another five goals for the reserves including two goals and two assists in a 10-1 thrashing of Arsenal, and this season Gardner has racked up a total of 13 goals for England U21’s, the Villa youth team and the reserves.

Moving up to the Premier League is obviously a big step but Gardner has more than held his own in his first couple of games for the senior team, and looks like an excellent prospect. As well as a great scoring record, Gardner is known as a bit of a free kick specialist, and also offers the future potential of penalties if he can establish himself fully into the first team. We can’t expect Mcleish to grant us that little bonus just yet, but seeing as Villa take on two of the leagues leakiest defences in Wigan and Blackburn next, an early punt could still pay dividends and his budget price of just 4.5 and low ownership of 0.1% could make him a great differential.

Papiss Cisse

Alan Pardew looks set to hand a first home start to Papiss Cisse this weekend, as Newcastle host Wolves. Both teams suffered five goal thrashings last time out, but the return of Yohan Cabaye, Ryan Taylor and Cheick Tiote means Pardew is able to field his strongest side, and with all due respect to Wolves, Newcastle should find it a lot easier going this weekend.

After such an impressive start to the season, overlooking Demba Ba and opting for his Senegalese strike partner would be a very bold choice. That said, it is only the presence of Ba that has prevented Cisse from being a lot more popular; Cisse actually has a better scoring record at international level and as the second top scorer in the Bundesliga last season, he looks like a very strong pick in his own right. With two home games up next, goals will surely fall to one or both strikers; priced at just 7.0 and with an ownership of just 1.2% compared to Ba’s 25.4%, Papiss Cisse would prove to be a huge differential should the goals go his way.

Mario Balotelli

The unpredictable nature of Mario Balotelli may put off the vast majority of Fantasy managers, but there is no denying the Italian’s explosive potential, and a home tie against Blackburn could pay huge dividends to anyone brave enough to take a punt. Sergio Aguero is the safe option of course, but over a third of all managers in the FPL game now own the Argentinian and if he were to have an off day, or (say it quietly) get rested, then the 1.3% of managers with Balotelli would be laughing all the way to the bank.

After sitting out the last three league fixtures through suspension, we’re putting our money on Balotelli making the starting lineup this week, but even if he is restricted to a late cameo, he’s proven more than capable of picking up points after coming off the bench; three of his nine league goals have come from appearances of 30 minutes or less. Priced at just 8.0, it’s got to be worth a pop hasn’t it?

Have 2.2m in the bank and 1 FT, line-up as follows:

    Krul
    Taiwo, RTaylor, Richards
    Bale, Walters, Dempsey, Silva
    Aguero (c), Sturridge, RvP
    Benched: Vorm, McClean, Evans, Kelly

Any suggestions, currently thinking that saving the transfer is the right call. Sturridge to Ba is definitely in the mix and perhaps Dempsey for Young/Nani (but I'm not really feeling that brave).

yes i would be tempted to do sturridge to ba also but equally saving and having 2ft's next week good postion to be in. Not sure if i would start taiwo ahead of evans or McClean though. In fact i might have both evans and McClean playing at the expense of sturridge and Taiwo.

definitly do sturridge to ba. (you'd still have enough for aguero to rooney in 2 weeks right?). start evans over taiwo. and mcclean vs walters for the starting spot is a tough one. gl with that choice

Same decision here, amigo. Going with Demp & Sess, since QPR haven't too strong at the back either. Also, Fulham have had a loooong break, here's hoping they'll be fresh to do some damage.

Btw read Froggy's preview? Wins for both of us in his predictions.

How're you coping up with the pressure of being the group favorite? Rukawa in there adds a lot of spice. Ruk vs Fratboy should be a mouth-watering prospect 😉

I have just changed my mind. Dont know why, just have a feeling Aguero is going to rip it up. Tevez looming, at home, confidence is high. I think Ba is a bit more of a risk which i dont need to take at this stage. No doubt i will change my mind again.

ba vs aguero for captain is driving me crazy. figure city will win by more but aguero could be benched/subbed early and the points could come from elsewhere as they have a very strong squad. yet it feels hard not to captain him vs blackburn. but i feel that newcastle could smash wolves too and if so then ba would probably have a pretty significant role in that.

    what are you guys doing?

    need sme help here guys

Yaya toure or david silva?..as nw yaya toure is also havin attackin lisence was we saw in the europa league

Is it worth considering Ryan talor as a 4 point hit?

keep silva. if yaya starts getting good attacking returns the next few games you could always draft him in but right now silva is proven and more consistent.

don't really think its worth a 4pt hit for a defender, even if he is oop

Sorensen has quite a decent fixture so why waste a freebie over Mig.Play Sorensen.

Cause if you think logically(certainly that is not the way things turnout out here in FPL )
Sorensen has a better chance of a cleanie.
Swansea have improved on the road recently but I think stoke will bully them out 😀

good point. its just that vorm is vorm and i keep expecting him to have another unexpected big haul... and it was 2-0 when they played earlier this season.

i played him most of the time (had kenny as other keeper) so that wasn't an issue :P.

still say i should play sorensen? just can't decide cuz h2h opponent will be playing sorensen so dont know if i should match him or be riskier and look to get a point advantage in goal. (there are only like 3 other differentials)

I would likely play Sorensen then, Vorm v Sorensen is more of a differential against you

BAE has more chances of assists and goals
      (though less of CS)

Logically would be playing Evans for CS
      But would prefer playing BAE

      Play Modric and McClean

      Bench order: Siggy, BAE

Reluctant to say bench Siggy over Modders, but North London Derbies are often full of goals from all over the place. Can't see a cleansheet from BAE but I could see a Modric contribution.

In saying that, I would aim to get Modric out soon. He is a fantastic player, does chip in the odd goal and assist, but he's not too well suited to fantasy.

Have you got a United midfielder? I'd be starting to look at one of them given they are guaranteed to play in GW29, and their fixtures look very nice after the Tottenham game up next. Valencia is out for only 1-2 weeks more, and I rate him as their best winger.

In saying that, they could be subject to rotation. Silva, Dempsey, Bale all recommended if you don't have them.

Opinions please, defence is currently... Richards, Santon, Caulkern (Taiwo, Shotton on the bench)

Option A Bring in Evans for Taiwo
    Option B Save transfer
Option C Save transfer and play Taiwo instead of Caulker

    Vorm
    Cahill - Simpson - Richards
    Bale - Dempsey - Sigurdsson - Larsson
    RVP - Aguero - PCisse

    Sorensen - Taiwo - Valencia - Enrique

0.9m, 1FT. I think I will do Larsson > McClean, unless you can suggest a better midfielder for 7.6m? And are my GK the right way round? Thanks 🙂

Whoever came up with the rule that "It's never worth taking a hit for a defender" is a cretin.

Selling whoever to get in BAE last week would have made you a ton of points.

Where do these FFS myths originate from, and can I shoot the person or persons unknown? 🙂
