Best Manchester City players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

How do Pep Guardiola’s team follow the season just gone? Manchester City cantered to their fifth league title win with five matches of the 2017/18 campaign to spare, breaking a host of records along the way.

Their run of 18 consecutive victories from August to December was the longest winning sequence in English football history, while their total of 100 points was the most ever recorded in England’s top flight.

A total of 106 goals, a goal difference of +79 and a title-winning margin of 19 points were also Premier League records.

Investment in this City side is, as was the case last season, a must from a Fantasy perspective, particularly since the release of the fixture list in June.

After a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 1 (a fixture City won 3-0 last season, it should be said), Guardiola’s side then face all six of the most recently promoted clubs – four of whom will take on City at the Etihad.

Fantasy Premier League managers would have a strong case for using all three of their permitted slots for City players, though the fly in the ointment is that 16 of the champions’ first-team squad were on duty for their respective countries at the World Cup this summer and Guardiola’s pre-season preparations have thus been affected.

Price hikes for the likes of Raheem Sterling (£11.0m), Leroy Sane (£9.5m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£6.5m) would also prohibit widespread Fantasy investment in City’s premium assets.

In-depth data on Manchester City’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Tempted with Jorghino instead of Neves.. Or going without Firmino and getting Mahrez in?

    GW1

    Fab
    Cedric Mendy Robertson PvA
    Mane Sane Eriksen
    Aubameyang Firmino Tosun

    4.0 Neves Stephens Peletier

I like this a lot, although I'd stick with Firmino. Best non-Salah team I've seen, although it's a big risk not having him

Thanks. I think the triple up may well cover Salah. We’ll see.

I can get Kane by losing Eriksen easily enough. I feel Auba is value though and am happy with him.

Had Mendy, Robertson and PvA in mind since last season ended!

I wouldn't get Mahrez given how Man City's wingers were rotated last season. I would also get Hughes out of the 5.0 mids

Really good team. If you want Mahrez, then maybe just bring him in for Eriksen? Spurs’ opening fixtures are pretty mixed and most of their starting 11 made it to the WC semis, which could mean underwhelming results at the beginning of the season. A lot of uncertainty over how many games Mahrez is going to play, but for me he’s worth the risk given MNC’s amazing fixtures.

Has there been a strategy discussion about wc timing? Many seem to think that early wc is good solution, but imo there is fixture change during gw 8-10 should I say.

My plan to navigate that problem is to start with heavy defence, maybe even take some forced hits and try to avoid early wc.

To get some strategy discussion my current draft team is:

    Patricio/Lössl
    Robbo, Bavies, Bailly, Coleman, PVA
    Salah, Sané, Dilva, (Hughes,Cairney)
    Agüero, Austin (Kamara?)

Aguero to Auba and Bavies to Mendy are the planned moves after gw2 but if it is too late or risky has to be considered. I would also like to have Azpi in my team, but not certain about Chelsea.

my strategy for WC 1 is always when it’s needed I.e. I need to make more than 5 transfers

I always avoiding planning for an early WC, can find yourself needing to use your second WC in January rather than saving it for the dgws

I’m avoiding Azpi until I see if his attacking is reduced or encouraged

If you go with Austin you have to plan for his inevitable injury

Yes, that is -4 pts unless I am able to transfer him out before. Not happy with him, but if I downgrade D Silva to Ramsey or Mkht I could upgrade him. Niasse starting instead of Tosun would solve the problem also.

Some kind of planning usually helps. If early wc is planned subs need to have good fixtures. If not, rotation has to be thought carefully. Yet, trying to manage and keep the team in good shape and wc if that fails is always a possibility. Trying to avoid that though.

    Planning for Kane:

    Ederson | Hamer
    Robertson | PVA | Cedric | Daniels | Peltier
    Salah | Groß | Jota | Kenedy | Cairney
    Kane | Auba | Austin

    Any changes?

There’s been some noise about Everton looking to buy a “long-term” replacement for Baines this summer. If that transfer happens, then perhaps there could be some bedding in this season, resulting in Baines being less nailed than Coleman? All pretty speculative for now. If Everton don’t buy a new left-back then I don’t think there’s much between Baines and Coleman.

Wondering how much the penalty decisions from the world cup will influence the refereeing of the PL. I imagine clamping down on holding in the box, lots of penos early on, then when players cop on to this, there'll be lots of chances for the Harry Maguire sorts.
I reckon there'll be screams for VAR to be introduced very early on, which could lead to pressure on the refs to again give more penos. Unsure about the strict hand ball rule used in the world cup, maybe because they had VAR was that highlighted. But feck it, I'll go more penos again because maybe refs will cut down on any hand ball where the arm isn't stuck to the body.

Can't really have a bad looking 4-4-2 but with all the good 7's and below at 3rd striker it seems a shame to waste the spot.

Can't see any 7s I like really though. Arnie's fixtures are mixed and he might not play up front, Niasse (played well in pre-season) is competing with Tosun, Austin/Gabbi is uncertain, etc.

In a sense I was meaning pop anyone in there at 7 and then assess it as someone is bound to emerge as a great 3rd. I've got Zaha there atm, bit dull but really a placeholder for anyone really.

Salahless tempting for obvious reasons. Fair also to say sith signings and the like that he will not get as much gametime as last year, therfore not as much points. So guys what you think of this lot. I am going for assured starters to begin with but I have gambled on two citay. Welcome feedback.

    Ederson

    Robertson Cedric Davies
    DSilva Sane Martial Siggy
    Aguero Firmino Arnie

    Speroni Daniels Stephens Diop

My main concerns given my sure starter approach are

    Mane DSilva & Aguero

Are there better guarantees within those respected teams if possible??

Jose on @Alexis_Sanchez: "I hope he is able to join us soon. It's important for him to work with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial as they will be the attacking players we start our season with.

Everyone talking about Martial, but not seeing any Mata love 6.5M could be worth a short term punt until the new cheap moneymaking mid is found

    Playing 5 at the back

    Foster 4.0
    Robbo Mendy Coleman PVA Bailly
    Salah Mahrez Martial Lamela 4.5
    Aguero Zaha Kamara

Too punty? Originally had Mane & 4.5 in for Martial & Lamela, but not too keen on 3 4.5s on the bench.

I figured anyone who doesn't get perform will be shipped out for early banwagons anyways (prepared to take early hits).

It's sort of ok but you're benching real value as it's a 5-4-2

How about switching Zaha to Arnu then so I can bench him GW1 and then PVA GW2 (they won't be real value, but will be better than a 4.5 coming off then bench if one of my players doesn't start)

Seeing plenty of teams with Mahrez and far less with Sane on board. I'm thinking the latter could be the 'safer' of the 2 due to the fact he has already been at City for some time, is settled etc where as new players can take a while to adjust when they move clubs. Anyone got a strong view either way ?

Sane had less starts at the beginning of last season when Mendy was in the team. It's possible that Pep will look to do similar this season if he plays Mendy in a LWB position.

Mahrez was quick to report for training once signed and is already on the US tour squad so should be settling in nicely. Both should start @ars so both will want to impress as Razza can play on either side.

Apparantly Mendy and Sane can't play together is what's putting me off Sane. That and the fact that Mahrez is cheaper and will essentially fill in for Sterling so I think he'll get enough chances even if he has to adjust.

      1. AandyzZ
        • 6 Years

Surely pep is more likely to use Bernardo silva even over mahrez to start with as Mahrez has just joined

I know but this is pep, just have a feeling he will not throw him in like that, he will want mahrez to know their system completely based on how stubborn pep is and has been before with new signings and rotation etc

Thoughts on this draft appreciated. ‪Very excited to see Eriksen play his 'Denmark' goal-thirsty role in a Spurs shirt!
Not really worked out my keepers, though I'm leaning toward a pairing including Patricio, which would mean dumping Boly. If Schmeichel moves to Chelsea then him + a 4.0 would be on the cards.

    4.5 4.5
    Robertson Davies Cedric Boly Wan-Bissaka
    Salah Eriksen Mahrez Kenedy McArthur
    Aguero Arnautovic King

I like it a lot - would potentially ship Mahrez to move more money into your other mid spots or ship King for a 4.5m fwd and just use the money elswhere. Solid defence but could probably do with one more premium option.

    Hypothetical situation:

@AnfieldExpress leaks the Liverpool team and Salah is not in it. Or if that's not happening, Klopp hints that he may not play the opening match. Either way, we know it's not serious and is 1 week, or at worst, 2 weeks that he's out.

    Do you?:

    a) Downgrade to a cheaper alternative and spread the funds around the rest of your team to make it stronger?

    b) Downgrade to a cheaper alternative and keep the Salah money in the bank for his return?

    c) Keep Salah in your team. First on your bench will do for this week and saves you a transfer later on.

    d) I never owned Salah anyway so this doesn't apply to me.
