FPL Question Time – Spending big in defence, end of forwards and Arsenal fixtures

Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer more questions, this time ahead of Gameweek 3.

We may have one Gameweek 2 match left to play, with Crystal Palace hosting Liverpool in Monday Night Football, but there are still plenty of talking points.

Not least that of how much money to spend in defence, how best to cover an unpredictable Manchester City attack and the upcoming good fixtures Arsenal are about to enjoy.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 3 Question Time:

Lee from FPL Family – One half of the popular married couple who play FPL together and run a YouTube channel.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Ben Crabtree – Winner of FPL in 2016/17.

QUESTION ONE – SIMON MARCH

Should we be giving up on forwards and putting that extra cash into having at least four premium wing-backs? I’m thinking of getting Robertson and Alonso to partner Mendy who I already own.

Simon: “After two weeks of watching the likes of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso marauding forward, getting goals and assists while also chipping in with the odd clean sheet, it’s pretty tempting to go big at the back.

“It’s hard to argue that, right now, 6-6.5m spent on a defender doesn’t yield better value than the same amount spent on a forward.

“However, one challenge is that while you can get decent value from a budget defender, you can currently get almost no value from a budget forward.

“If it takes a 4.5m forward to afford an additional 6m+ defender, that’s a big collective outlay on what is, effectively, one active player.

“It might improve your first eleven but it could also substantially reduce your squad’s strength in depth, increasing your exposure to rotation and reducing your ability to adapt to changes in fixtures and form.

“You could go without a premium forward but, as Aguero demonstrated on Sunday that this, in itself, can be a huge risk.

“A premium defence might be a viable strategy, but it has its trade-offs to take into account.

“Also, it only takes a week for things to change in FPL so I’d be wary of writing-off forwards this early in the season.”

QUESTION TWO – BEN CRABTREE

Given their run of fixtures I currently have three Man City attackers (Bernardo Silva, Sterling and Aguero) – is this too much given possible rotation and the cost of the investment overall?

Ben: “I see it as a necessity to have three Man City players so that if they turn it on, as it looks like they will often, you maximise your chance for a share of the points.

“It looks like the build-up to Pep Guardiola’s team sheet is destined to cause palpitations but the stress can be reduced with maximum coverage.

“Aguero, Sterling and Bernardo Silva is a lot of money and the value of the outstanding Mendy, probably one of the more secure starters, means you should prioritise him pretty much over all other transfers.

“Aguero has to stay in your squad. Sterling looks the most sensible to remove given his omission against Huddersfield and the extra expense.

“However, he will come back in the team at some point and does have the potential to be a great explosive differential compared to Bernardo Silva who looks more susceptible to small scores in big wins.

“The safe move is probably Sterling to Hazard and get Mendy as your third City player. The ‘in it to win it’ move would be keep Sterling and change Bernardo Silva to Mkhitaryan.

“Rotation is a huge problem for us and owning great players that are certain starters is ideal. One or two rotation risks is okay, but many more and every week you leave yourself open to a disaster week.

“I don’t like the idea of a strong squad of 15 to cover many risky players due to too much money on the bench. £4.5m defenders can come to the rescue with potentially 6 points entering the fray.

“Throw in an element of attacking capability and the ceiling points potential is higher than most 5.5m mids.”

QUESTION THREE – LEE FROM FPL FAMILY

Who are the best Arsenal players to fit into your side with their upcoming fixtures so good? It’s tricky with lots of other in-form options in the early Gameweeks. For me, the only spots that could be a straight swap are Pickford (for Cech/Leno) and Aguero (for Auba/Laca), as I don’t feel like ditching any of Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Salah, Mane, Bernardo, Richarlison or Zaha. What would you do?

Lee: “I was not at all convinced by Arsenal defensively against either Man City or Chelsea. Emery is asking them to play out from the back and they just don’t have the personnel to do it right now – Cech in particular.

“In attack though, Aubameyang is class. He hasn’t shown it yet – but he will.

“If like many though, getting him in means losing Aguero, I would be sticking with the in-form City man.

“The one player who does look good for Arsenal so far is Henrikh Mkhitaryan. If you can fit him in among those other big names, get him in.

“Otherwise, keep a watching brief and potentially be prepared to switch out the more expensive Mané or Bernardo Silva if the Arsenal man shows some serious form.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With Mendy and Robertson looking great picks, and other heavy hitting defenders (Alonso, Trippier) showing form, how many are you looking to have?

Are you planning to put more money into your backline this week? Have you already moved for Alonso to avoid price rises? Are you considering playing 4 at the back?

Nah still 3. But 3 good ones.

Can't afford the template Alonso, Mendy, Robertson so will be scouting good 5.5m bargains.

Currently on Robertson, Mendy, Alonso (just got him in for Azpi before price rise), Bavies, Bellerin.

Bavies' underlying stats are great and so are Bellerin's fixtures. So I'm not going to lose them until I'm convinced I'd get better value from a similarly priced mid (Pedro? Kante???) - at which point I might go 4-4-2.

I currently have: Mendy Robertson Alonso Shaw AWB
So I have 3.5 premium defenders
This week I'm playing 4-4-2 with Shaw most likely starting ahead of AWB/Kamara/Cairney (if he's fit)

Have traded down my premium keeper for Alonso to join Mendy and Robbo in my defence. Trippier is tempting but I would probably have to lose one or more of Auba and a City attacker so waiting it out.

This is the first time I have ever gotten on a template bandwagon early - I am normally extremely patient- so fingers crossed!

      Mendy is surely a must.

Robertson will probably be a must; tonight will tell.

Alonso could be great if Chelsea defend again; until then his returns aren't sustainable. He won't get 12 points a game for the whole season.

Spurs are liable to rotation, especially come the Champions League. Maybe it will be predictable, maybe not. Too risky.

PvA looks like the real deal - question is would you have him and Wan-Bissaka? For 5.5m there doesn't seem to be a better option out there.

That's true I suppose. I think the test will be if he gets involved against a stubborn defence. But really that's a positive test; it can only reinforce his essential status.

Robbo, Mendy, TAA, as I've had from the beginning of the season. Don't think Alonso will outscore TAA by too much so happy to carry on with him in the team and the 1.5m saving to use elsewhere.

I think value is veey important also.

Wan Bassaku may cover PVA .(He is a 4m PVA)

TAA may cover Robertson. Jury still out on this one.

Mendy a must for sure. I got Alonso in last night before the price rise but not feeling it at the minute. Defence feels a little top heavy. I havr 8 players now tied up in City Liv and Chelsea. Time will tell if this strategy is wise or not

Agree that AWB is great value at £4m but to say he’s a £4m PVA does a disservice to PVA as an attacking force. He’s scored 16 goals in the last 3 seasons. I don’t think anyone is expecting a similar goal return from AWB.

I started with Mendy, Robinson, PVA, Schlupp & AWB in defence. I could upgrade but with Palace's fixtures looking so good after Liverpool i.m going to wait a bit before considering Alonso or Trippier.

Mendy 4 assists in 2 games, how can you not justify having him? I'd have mendy if he was 8M. Alonso the same, 1 goal 2 assists and he's nailed the bar once, on directs some times, these guys are essential.

As soon as Kane hits form and Aguero is banging them in regularly the whole experiment with 3-4 premium defenders will go byebye as everyone clamours to free up money to swap in the premium attacker for Ings.

Mendy is the only essential defender. One of Robbo/TAA is good. AWB as your third defender for the next few game weeks is fine. That's a solid back three and allows, if wanted, two 4.0 defenders on the bench with money to be spent further forward.

I think this experiment of Aguero-Ings-Zaha(Kamara?!) is going to fall flat very shortly and leave a lot of people needing to wildcard.

That assumes this season and all other seasons are alike, and they are not. Kane is higher priced, Salah has demonstrated himself to be a more reliable captain option and multiple other players are competing with him. Sure he might bean option, but who's going to build their team around a possibility

Your team is more balanced than those who have two cheap strikers, so you'll feel the effect less.

There's a reason why the 3-4-3 formation and money deployed in attack/midfield has been the cornerstone of FPL for years. Two GW's and people are point chasing already and declaring years of data and strategy defunct.

I know I'm going to want Kane in my team *at some point* - people who think they can go the entire season without him are going to be disappointed, bemoaning the casuals who've had him in since GW1. Just my thoughts anyway.

You've got to have PVA, so that the template backline can be called PRAM
      PVA, Robertson, Alonso, Mendy.

I've currently only got the M.

I may have gone a little crazy and brought in Mendy and Alonso (-4) yesterday, financed by Sanchez to Richarlison. So now I have Mendy, Alonso, VVD, Bellerin (I've had him in my team from the start because of the run of fixtures that start next week, so I wasn't willing to get rid yet). Seems like a lot of money in defense, but if it starts to become problematic, my plan is to sell VVD to upgrade up front (currently have Zaha Auba King).

On the same wavelength as pre-season but ramping it up now on WC! 🙂

      Pre-wildcard defence:
      Mendy / VVD / PVA / AWB / Boly

      Post-wildcard defence:
      Mendy / Robertson / Alonso / PVA / AWB

Went 5 from day 1 - Robbo, TAA, Alonso, Mendy, Walker and DDG in goal

Have shipped DDG for Kepa this gw, cant be losing cs at home to Leicester and away to Brighton for 6m!

Not concerned about Walker bench, it wont happen often, but I may transfer to another heavy hitter, perhaps Trippier if he looks to be nailed

Started with Mendy, VVD, Bellerin and Azpi. Changed Azpi to Alonso yesterday after watching on Saturday. Will watch tonight to see whether to do VVD to Robertson (although VVD a safer pick). Could easliy do Bellerin to Tripper after this run of fixtures, around week 9.
4 at the back is good value, I looked at last year's finishing points vs the same price range in midfield. Way better value in defence at the 5.5 and 6 mill range.

I have Alonso, Mendy, Robertson and Shaw.
The Shaw pick gives me some room to rotate when I have a lower-end mid/striker with a bad fixture, assuming that Shaw will continue playing until Valencia is back.

Very badly burned this GW with the lack of clean sheets. I mean, no one had the Cardiff or Toon defenders who bagged points, and few had any from Leicester - and that was it for the weekend.

Still, I'm keeping the faith with my ultra-expensive pseudo-defence.

Alonso, Mendy, Robbo, Trippy with Wan-Bis to troll me with huge hauls on my bench. I'm eying GW4 for a mega-haul.

This, what Rash said. Maybe I see things differently to everyone getting in Alonso.
I pay premium money for a defender with the expectation of more clean sheet points.I then choose which defender from those teams is nailed and likely to get bps/attacking returns on top.
when Chelsea + Man U sort out their defence I'll be adding 1 from Alonso/Azp/Young/Valencia.
I can see Trippier/Davies getting rotated around CL fixtures imo otherwise they'd be good picks too.
Until then it's Mendy/Robbo/PVA for me cos I can't expect Alonso to keep getting a goal/assist every match.
If I'm wrong I will accept that and get him in for a higher price.

          Bavies, Mendy, Alonso, Robertson (AWB).

i started the season with more money than i ever have in defence. DDG, Bavies, Robbo, Mendy, Luiz. Given me a good start but it also shows how getting the wrong personnel, like the first 2 names, can actually end up being a waste of money.

          I have Alonso - Mendy - Robertson - Luiz
Regarding the fifth i am thinking about Van anholt or bellerin, Bellerin was very good in chelsea’s match and he will have good fixtures, what do you guys think? Recommendations for a fifth defender with a budget till 6.5

Already made the move on Saturday night to get the backline of:

          Alonso, Mendy, TAA, Sakho, AWB

The latter two will be benched most weeks, though I could potentially use them to cover TAA's less desirable fixtures. I upgraded by only 0.5 from VVD to Alonso, but I can see merit in putting more money into defence. The problem being that replacements like Sakho and PVA are great options for less than 6.0, so paying more across the backline might be unnessesary unless you play 4 or 5 at the back each week.

Poch is a decent manager but what's the logic in rotating his full backs? Fitness related? Spurs look far more dangerous when Trippier & Davies are on the pitch and he must know that.

Poch system makes fullbacks do massive amount of work during the game so he rotates them. Simple as that.

Poch puts a lot of pressure on his full backs to run up and down the flank constantly, much more than most managers. Such obligations make rotation on the full backs a neccesity

Plan was to do Cook to PVA for my FT GW 3.
How can I ship a 4.5 defender that just got me a 14 pointer?
I would like to bring in Rich but dont see a path without downgrading Zaha.

        Ryan/Button
        Robertson/Mendy/Steve Cook/Wan-Bissaka/Peltier

Cook -> Pva sounds sensible to me, it's not about how many points they've already got but how many points they will get going forward.

That team has to many big hitters for my liking though, desperately needs more money in midfield!

Robertson - Bailly - Mendy (Peltier, Bissaka)
Mkhitaryan - Bernardo Silva - Richarlison - Mane - Salah
        Agüero - Tosun (Kamara)

As it stands now, I'd do C, Ings & Mkhi. The latter is an urgent pick, whereas Hazard looks to be needing another GW at least before getting the full 90 minutes. A would be worth it if you believe Hazard to get 60+ minutes next game.

        Team structure related post.

I hate the sight of Sanchez in my team atm but fwiw it gives me the flexibility to go Haz, Auba or Kane way if needed. And most importantly I manage to keep the firing Kun amd essential Mo. Whats more, I dont need to use a hit (2 FTs at most) to bring another premium

Team structure does not bag you points. Playing players do. Sanchez playing in an out of sorts united team does not do it for me. Every person to their own. Hope it works out for you all the same.

Need to ship King and Cairney, would you go for:
        A) Two reasonable playing options such as Fraser and Ings, and bank 0.5m
        B) One bench fodder 4.5m forward (kamara) and someone like Mikhi in mid (0 ITB)?

B, but I'd keep Cairney for now if he's on your bench anyway, you can ship him on your WC

Have made a 3 week plan for transfers which will enable me to have Aguero, Hazard, Mane, Auba, Mkhi in attack from weeks 4-8
Will involve 2 hits and removing Salah.
        Worth it?
        Salah - > Hazard
Bilva -> Fraser/someone in this range
        Jota -> Mkhi
        Mitrovic -> Auba
        King -> Ings

I am thinking of using my 2 FTs to get rid of Jota and King this week. Will do the others in due course.
Already have Aguero, Richarlison, Mendy and Robertson. Seems to be a good transfer strategy on paper, if there are any suggestions I would like to hear them 🙂

I don't think I've ever stuck to a plan that goes beyond two weeks...
King to Ings makes sense certainly. Agree with that as a first move. Personally I don't think Bilva is much value, don't see him involved enough in the attack, so that downgrade also releases funds so you can look to do one of the upgrades the week after.

Taking hits is not my fav strategy so I doubt it'll work seeing as you are moving players who are likely to outscore their replacements

You can't be certain Salah(c) Mitro King etc +8 points will be outscored by the incomings is my view. Not one v one basis

Salah plays Spurs away, Chelsea away and City at home in those games
I will have Aguero and Auba to keep as captain during those games
                Aguero: Fulham, Cardiff, Brighton, Liverpool
                Auba: Cardiff, Newcastle, Everton, Watford
Hazard: Bournemouth, Cardiff, West Ham, Liverpool

Moura has looked pretty good for Spurs and will play games due to Son being away.

Madison has also looked pretty good but with Vardy being banned not sure they will be as strong going forward?

Other than l’pool in gw4 Leicester have a good run in the next 6 with the likes of Huddersfield, Newcastle, Southampton and Bournemouth. Maddison is the only creater in the team. Played excellently without Vardy in first game so I wouldn’t be too worried. Out of those two, easy choice. Spurs fixtures...ergh

        Arnautovic | Aguero | Lacazette

I think the run of games they have now he will get much more game time, Supposedly against top 6 he wouldn't start? But with Ozil form aswell should get start considering each time he come off the bench hes made arsenal in general look better im holding on for another week or so!

Miki for me. I’m swapping Mahrez for Miki this week. Think he’s more essential to Arsenal attack with good form and a good run of fixtures.

van Dijk - Tomkins - Mendy
Richarlison - Mkhitaryan - Lucas Moura - Mané
        Firmino - Agüero - Aubameyang

VVD for Robertson? Purely for the price rise? Probably time to lose Moura aswell. Not great fixtures. Iwobi for a cheap differential?
