Injuries

FPL injury monitor: the latest news and quotes

The international break is a period rife with uncertainty, with various Fantasy Premier League players nursing or recuperating from knocks and each withdrawal from a national squad greeted with as much scepticism as it is concern for the fitness of a prized FPL asset.

We’ve taken the downtime of this Fantasy-free fortnight as an opportunity to bring you the latest club bulletins and direct quotes concerning the players affected, which will hopefully assuage any injury fears – or perhaps add to them.

Ryan Fraser

The Bournemouth winger triggered a wave of apprehension when he pulled out of the Scotland squad on Tuesday, the second international break in succession in which he has returned to the south coast early.

The Scotland manager Alex McLeish said this of the pint-sized midfielder:

He’s been getting treatment, not doing so much training, and saved electric performances for his club in recent weeks. We were very keen to get him involved given the way he’s been burning it up.

He was very keen and came up on the plane on Sunday but he failed a medical with the Scotland doctors and physios. He was absolutely determined to stay but we had no choice but to send him back.

The issue has been reported as a hamstring injury, a problem that has seemingly plagued Fraser since September.

We have been here before, of course. Fraser was a major doubt ahead of the visit of Leicester City in Gameweek 5 and hadn’t been spotted in training ground photos prior to that clash, but subsequently delivered his biggest haul of the season with two goals, an assist and maximum bonus.

Bournemouth are yet to make a statement on Fraser’s condition, with the hope (for his 22.6% of owners, anyway) being that his withdrawal from the Scotland squad is purely precautionary – though McLeish’s comments about “failing a medical” will only add to the anxiety.

Marko Arnautovic

Before we trigger any unnecessary fretting, the West Ham United striker is not injured per se and his problems don’t warrant a flag in FPL – but quotes from the player yesterday confirmed he is playing through the pain barrier at the moment.

Arnautovic said:

The knee is not the best but I am fit and I can play. I’m not training a lot at West Ham to try and my knee calm.

It is going to take some time as I have some inflammation in my bone but I am always ready to play on the weekend.

After a game, I need some rest for about two or three days. By the middle of the week, I am training normally with the team, training in full.

And on the weekend I can play, that is the most important thing. Obviously, you can’t do anything on this bone bruise.

You can’t change it, you can’t do nothing, you just have to treat it well to settle it down but I can handle the pain so for me in the game I am 100 per cent fit.

I’m ready for every game. I’m ready for Northern Ireland and afterwards back at West Ham my focus will be on Tottenham.

Questions on Arnautovic’s fitness have been a weekly occurrence in Manuel Pellegrini’s pre-match press conferences over the last month or so, but the Austrian forward’s comments state that he and the club have developed a fitness regime designed to help him play on a weekly basis – excellent news for the legions of us who either own him already or are considering acquiring his services for the Hammers’ superb run of fixtures between Gameweeks 10-21.

Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic

These two Manchester United players both pulled out of their respective national teams’ squads earlier this week, though the concern from a Fantasy perspective will be for Shaw, rather than his Serbian team-mate.

United’s bulletin said:

Luke Shaw has withdrawn from the England squad and is returning to Manchester United, meaning the in-form defender will miss the two UEFA Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.

The 23-year-old’s exit from the Three Lions’ camp was announced by The FA on Monday evening, and he will now return to the Aon Training Complex for treatment.

It remains to be seen if Shaw will be available for the Reds’ anticipated return to action on Saturday 20 October, against Jose Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

His issue has been widely reported as a knock picked up in the 3-2 win over Newcastle United last Saturday.

The club’s statement on Matic followed a similar template, with the “remains to be seen” line trotted out for the Serbian midfielder too.

Further updates are awaited on Jesse Lingard and Ander Herrera, who remain doubts for that trip to Chelsea.

Danny Rose and Alex McCarthy

Thursday morning brought news that England had been hit by two further withdrawals, as Rose and McCarthy returned to their respective clubs.

The pair had sat out training earlier in the week but the Football Association’s statement played down the severity of their injuries:

Having arrived in camp with minor injuries, Alex McCarthy and Danny Rose have now returned to their clubs and won’t feature in this month’s games.

Both Spurs and Southampton also emphasised the precautionary nature of their withdrawals.

James Milner

Reports circulating this week in the media suggest Liverpool hope to have Milner back from a hamstring injury within a month after the midfielder was substituted early in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

We previously discussed the potential positive implications for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane regarding spot-kick duties, with Milner having headed the queue so far this season.

What we didn’t note at the time, of course, is that Milner has taken more corner-kicks than any Liverpool player this season – meaning the likes of Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Xherdan Shaqiri may stand to benefit at dead-ball situations.

Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele

Roberto Martinez appeared to give the game away earlier in the week regarding the severity of Vertonghen’s injury, saying this about the defender’s hamstring injury:

It’s bad news. He could miss two Belgium camps.

That would put Vertonghen out at least until the November international break. Pochettino was unimpressed about Martinez’s disclosure to the media and was less forthcoming with a timeframe for Vertonghen’s recovery:

We cannot guess. We hope as soon as possible it can be fixed, but we cannot guess.

No official recent update has been given on Eriksen, Alli and Dembele’s absences, though there is speculation that Alli might be ruled for another few weeks with a hamstring problem.

Serge Aurier

The Ivorian full-back is set to feature for his country this week after being included in their squad for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Aurier’s return to fitness could impact on Kieran Trippier‘s game time, with the England right-back having enjoyed the monopoly in that position over the last fortnight.

Kevin De Bruyne

“In contention” for the match against Liverpool but ultimately not risked, De Bruyne looks set to make his return to the Manchester City squad in Gameweek 9 for the visit of Burnley.

De Bruyne was left out of the Belgium squad this week in order to aid his recovery and his national team boss Roberto Martinez had this to say about his star midfielder’s healing powers on Sunday:

The issue is how long he will be out and the reports are very positive. I think we’ll see him on the pitch a lot earlier than other players would take with that injury [and] we think he could be even fresher after his period away.

No timescale yet but Kevin wants to be on the football pitch as quick as he can and physically he’s got that natural gift of being able to heal quicker than other players.

Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy were omitted from their respective countries’ squads this week, meanwhile, welcome news for the Fantasy owners of either player given the fitness worries that have dogged them both in recent weeks.

Christian Benteke

The Eagles gave an update on the Belgian striker yesterday:

The club can confirm that Christian Benteke has undergone minor arthroscopic explorative surgery and washout of his knee, as it had not been settling with conservative management.

The surgeon was happy with the outcome and we expect Christian to return to training very soon. A further update will be given in a few weeks’ time.

Scott Dann and Connor Wickham, meanwhile, are set to feature for a Palace XI in a friendly against Dulwich Hamlet tonight.

Mesut Ozil

Reports in the media suggest the German midfielder will return to training this week after missing the win over Fulham with a back spasm, though he wasn’t pictured at London Colney on Wednesday.

Petr Cech is likely to remain out until November, meanwhile.

James Tarkowski

The Burnley centre-back withdrew from the England squad with a groin injury and said this about his planned recuperation over the international break:

I’ve had a problem for quite a while now and we’re working hard to get things right. But it’s not as simple as just a week’s rest and everything’s fine.

We’ve got to be at it all the time to get things right, which we are doing, and hopefully over the next few weeks we can get that right.

Antonio Rudiger

The Chelsea defender had this to say about the groin injury that forced his withdrawal from the Germany squad:

I won’t be available for the German national team for the upcoming two matches due to a groin problem.

I will do some individual training sessions during the international break and I am confident to be back soon. Best of luck to my German teammates for the next two games.

Rudiger had treatment at the end of the Southampton match in Gameweek 8, though it remains to be seen if he is fit for the visit of Manchester United a week on Saturday.

Mathew Ryan

Anyone who has brought in Brighton’s goalkeeper for this excellent run of fixtures that the Seagulls are embarking on would have been concerned about his omission from the Australia squad on fitness grounds, but the Socceroos head coach Graham Arnold has eased any fears of a possible absence in Gameweek 9:

Mathew’s managing a minor injury which hasn’t prevented him from playing or performing for Brighton so far this Premier League season.

He could have travelled to the Middle East, trained with us, and played against Kuwait, but for this window, we believe it is best that he remains in Brighton and returns to full fitness with his club.

The Rest

Aaron Mooy (groin) only has a minor niggle despite pulling out of the Australia squad, while Paul Dummett‘s ongoing recovery from a hamstring injury forced his withdrawal from Wales duty. The Newcastle left-back was in contention for Gameweek 8, so is not thought to be seriously injured.

Davy Propper (foot) and Ilkay Gundogan (hamstring) are also unavailable for their national teams this week and will be assessed ahead of Gameweek 9.

Charlie Daniels (knee) continued his comeback from injury with an appearance for Bournemouth’s under-21s last week.

Marco Silva last week said he hoped to give Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes, Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy minutes over the international break, as did Sean Dyche of Robbie Brady.

Slavisa Jokanovic said Tom Cairney is “not working with us” and “still with pains” after the defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Our Injuries and Bans page has more detail on a raft of other players currently nursing knocks or more serious injuries.

Surely you've got to have Doherty in your team for the attacking potential he possesses. I'd say Doherty in place of Trippier would make sense coz I think Aurier would recover by the end of the international break

I would forget about Laca, doesnt make sense to ship any of those strikers. I would prob get Doherty for Trippier, might as well get him sooner rather than later. Save the other FT.

Pereira could be anyone up to 5.2...Is he the best considering fixtures? Is he even nailed?

Pereira is a great FPL squad player. I've had him since GW 1. He's playing as an attacking mid on the right and seems to be preferred over Ghezzal atm. Also, he's one of the best tacklers in that team so he's quite capable of bonus points. I doubt there are other defenders in the game that offer that all-round package for his price.

I’ve had him since my WC. I agree great value and even better now with good fixtures and playing OOP.
I went TAA and Periera instead of Robertson and 4.0.

Going for a nice balance of heavy hitters and differentials

The obvious flaw is the lack of a Liverpool attacker. But it is flexible enough that i can bring in Mane for Sterling or Salah with 2 moves

Can't see there being much points between them , but you know me , KDB and Aguero. I just think Sterling is more of a rotation risk, but very explosive.

BBC running a poll of which Premier League team you think was the best, for me it's between:

    A) Man U's treble winners 98/99
    B) Arsenal's invincibles 03/04
    C) Mourniho's first Chelsea back-to-back winners 04-06
    D) Man City's centurions 17/18

    Who is it for you?

In a one off game between the two sets of players as they were at the time who would win

        Schmeichel
        Neville Stam Johnsen Irwin
        Beckham Scholes Keane Giggs
        Cole Yorke

        Henry Bergkamp
        Pires Vieira Gilberto Ljungberg

So, who here can beat 158 captain points?

Looking back, almost half of those came in the first two GWs with Mane and Aguero respectively.

Only fail was Aubameyang in GW3.

Last year was horrible for my captains - started off with Jesus 1 point in GW1, then captained Lukaku for his penalty miss and 0 points, then a series of Kane blanks vs. bad teams... As you can see the good thing is I've got over it 😀

108 haha. But I must be getting something right with the rest of my team as I'm in the top 500. Don't know if I mentioned that before. When people bang on about you only get a good rank by being lucky, I think actually the captaincy success element is the most "lucky" part. You choose one and it works or not. Whereas the rest of your team you plan and luck evens out more with successes and failures. This is the story in sticking to anyway! 🙂

Despite being 4.5K overall, my captains have been shockingly bad.
I've only picked up 90 points from my captains, and those points only make up 15.9% of my score.

GW 1 - Salah vs WHU (8 pts)
GW 2 - Salah vs cpa (9 pts)
GW 3 - Salah vs BHA (8 pts)
GW 4 - Aguero vs NEW (6 pts)
GW 5 - Aguero vs FUL (7 pts)

Until GW 5 it was alright, no big scores, but no blanks either. But since then, it's been a disaster:

GW 6 - Hazard vs whu (3 pts) - The only time Hazard has scored less than 4 pts this season / the only game he didn't assist/score in
GW 7 - Richarlison vs FUL (3 pts) - Correctly predicted that Everton would score a lot of goals vs Fulham but unfortunately Richarlison wasn't involved
GW 8 - Kane vs CAR (1 pt) - The less said about this, the better 🙂

Warning - next GW I'm captaining Hazard vs MUN. Since the start of 16/17 he has blanked 7/8 times I captained him.

I think captaincy is one of my least favorite things about FPL as I don't normally pick good captains and 2 of my 3 TCs since the chip's introduction scored 3 pts.

        1. stat
            5 years, 6 months ago

I'd be 38 pts better off if I had just captained my VC every week:

            GW 1 - Aguero vs ars (2)
            GW 2 - Mane vs cpa (10)
            GW 3 - Aguero vs wol (2)
            GW 4 - Salah vs lei (2)
            GW 5 - Hazard vs CAR (20)
            GW 6 - Aguero vs car (6)
            GW 7 - Aguero vs BHA (8)
            GW 8 - Hazard vs sou (14)

That would put me at an OR of 129

2FT, and I dont want to waste 1 free transfer so I am thinking doing Maddison to Richarlison for next week and just bench Tomkins for now. How does it sound?

        Current team

        Ederson (Hamer)
Alonso - WB - Doherty (Tomkins, Bednarek)
Salah - Mane - Hazard - Maddison (Stephens)
        Kun - Wilson - Ings

After Liverpool next GWs I will ditch Salah or Mane but for now I want them both.

        Looking closely at defenders.
Playing the game forever and top money defenders were likes of Terry, Baines etc. Could be a CB or a Full back.
The change in the game has made wing backs the top dogs. So much so having a C Back would be a waste in your back line. The likes of Maguire will earn you points but wing backs will change the 3 4 3 mentality.
I am a little concerned the player pool to choose from is going to reduce from the 30 to 40 range to 20 to 30 range. Time for a rule change FPL IMO. Get 80 points behind and it is going to be Sooooo difficult to get a decent OR.
        Just an opinion.

I don't think that the emergence of wing backs will eliminate the prospects of centre backs. After all, the main focus when buying defenders is clean sheets so sometimes full backs/wing backs might be benched or sold depending on team's performance/player's availability/tricky fixtures. Then if your're unable to find another wing back then the centre backs could be go to option if they have favourable fixtures and set piece threat.

Clean sheets will play a part but you are getting attacking players (wingers) with a possible 4 point bonus now, rather than 4 point bonus with possible attacking returns. A way of thinking thats alll.

Agreed. That depends on whether you're investing for long-term to medium-term. Personally, I don't like the idea of investing in defenders for long-term unless you're trying to protect his value. Otherwise a more aggressive approach towards clean sheets often works out well especially if you don't want to spend a lot of money on defenders but have 5 decent options to choose from.

wing backs always prosper at the beginning of the season when defenses are weak - as the season goes on the double returns we've seen from the likes of Alonso, Mendy etc deminish and the cheaper CB's then become idea for moving money up front.

consequently those CB's who score set peices go up in value to become premium defenders. Terry scored quite a few goals.

Currently thinking Ederson -> Fabinski and Holebas -> Robertson.

        Do I:
        A) Save my FT and wait until next week and miss out on Robertson (HUD), play AWB (eve) and sit Holebas
        B) Do both this week (-4) and miss out on Ederson (BUR)

Bou fixtures turn in 2 and Brighton stay nice for a while longer.

I currently have kane and thinking of one of the following:
          A) keep kane for whu, MNC
          B) get kun back for BUR, tot
          C) punt on firmino for hud,CAR and then get kun

Yeah I surpassed myself with that choice... if only I could make such good choices for my own team. How about this one :

                Fabianski

                Alonso Doherty Robertson

                Fraser Richarlison Haz _______

                ____ Vardy Mitro

Subs - Foster, Wan Bissaka, Shaw, Knockaert

21.5 itb and desperately need Man City and Liverpool attack!

I'd really like KDB when he's ready.

How about Wilson & Sterling, and then KDB & TAA for Fraser and Shaw the week after with a few for keeping double Liverpool defence and double City attack for a long time after?

Wilson is decent, BOU fixtures not great but sometimes you just need to stand by some picks and let Them blank onde in a while instead of constantly changing to have the sexy picks

It's a bit of a workaround to get KDB/Sterling/Wilson instead of Aguero, Fraser and another non city as I wouldnt be able to afford Aguero and Sterling.

Considering Aguero's 60 minute appearances, I reckon the transfer could pay off long term, and I dont mind keeping one BOU asset during the tricky spell as they look very free scoring this year.

            Ask one question.
Will maddison outscore mendy or Robertson until the end of the season.
I would say no and swap them over to go 4 at the back

this ....a lot of people generally dont make this simple calculation in their mind

week in week out, consistently who is more likely to get 6pts, maddison?! with an assist or goal each week or mendy robbo with cs/assist/goal....no contest! ...for me 4 prem (3 + doh) is the way forward + alisson/ederson and you have an upperhand on your opponents...xabialonso- we want to keep this quiet tho done we 😉

Ha ye keep quiet but it seems a no brainer this season with robbo Mendy Alonso Trippier, I can't see them tailing off only maybe the odd rotation. Out of the cheap mids of maddison richarlison Fraser etc I can see maybe one of them keeping up with the premium defenders but at least 3 of those defenders outscoring all the similar priced mids

exactly...although i wanted a little extra money so i did Trippier to Doherty, aurier back vertonghen injured troublesome spurs, doherty a differential in my mini league...but i kept robbo mendy alonso of course 🙂

i really like richarlison, i think he will be more consistent than the other 2 and can outscore the defenders. not sure about the other 2.

salah hazard rich with that back 4 and alisson for me is a good combination already, the strikers at the mo are all pretty level weirdly enough, anyone between arnie mitro king/wilson aguero laca vardy, i have arnie vardy and mitro for now but will rotate these more than the rest of the team. defence mid season keepers? rotating strikers maybe a good theory.

Yep I prefer richarlison myself. Strangely we have similar team except I have patrico over ederson and trippier over Doherty.

                    Alonso robbo Mendy trip
                    Salah hazard rich

yea similar, Nice team....Aguero obviously scares me but i don't like that he gets pulled off every 60mins and i went for vardy instead. i think he can keep up, well i hope. but if he goes mad ill downgrade fraser who is currently on my bench and upgrade 1 of mine....Arnie is not going anywhere tho! 🙂

I’d like a tad more City defence in there, namely Mendy or Ederson.
Don’t advocate Bednarek in there, and prefer Robertson over TAA (rotatiom comcern).

Just popping by to mention our 50th pod!

Thank you so much for your support if you've listened and enjoyed our work.

            http://whogottheassist.com/pod-50-attack-the-block/

This week, we take a look at the block of four fixtures between International Breaks and talk about the key sides and assets to be looking at during that period.

We then move on to our features section, which covers:

Market Forces: our look at the movers & shakers in the FPL transfer market

Zombie league: our review of the ghost ship league we’re running on behalf of our unspecified family members

All England: keeping track of our team of All-English players this year

            Finally, we take some questions.

Curious to know which formation people are preferring going forward? namely in defence i am curious about tbh:

            a) 3-4-3/3-5-2

            B)or 4-4-2 ?
