It was a disappointing weekend on the refereeing front last time out, with only two dismissals and a couple of penalty awards over the eleven matches. With many of our red card favourites afforded a Premier League rest this Gameweek, it’s possible there may be slim pickings again. Don’t fret though, Mike Dean is back.

Lee Mason

With some of the obvious candidates (Lee Probert, Andre Marriner, Stuart Attwell and Mark Clattenburg) all absent this weekend and previous pick Martin Atkinson going through a late season lean spell – just one red card in his last nine games now – it’s time for a clean sweep of spot-kick loving middle men. In the form of Bolton-based Lee Mason, we have a candidate fresh from recent action. Mason awarded Swansea a penalty last week, penalising Joe Hart’s challenge on Wayne Routledge to notch up his seventh penalty award of a 17 game season so far.

He’ll be in action at Goodison Park this week for the visit of Arsenal, so the obvious call of Robin van Persie is strengthened a little, as Mason could offer him a way past the recently stubborn Everton defence. Similarly, Leighton Baines could offset the Dutchman’s threat with penalty duties of his own. Incidentally, Mason is not big on the cards, though; he hasn’t flashed a single red all season and, with a low average of 2.71 yellows per game, there’s every chance that tightrope walker Laurent Koscielny might survive another week if he’s a good lad.

Phil Dowd

For our second pick, it’s another old favourite. Dowd makes his third appearance in this fledgling column, but it’s more than just the official that’s piqued our interest in the Sunday afternoon Newcastle vs Norwich match up. These two sides both feature high in the penalties conceded stat available in our members’ area (under Team Stats > Team Discipline,) with the home side topping that particular table after conceding a whopping nine penalties in their 28 league games so far. Norwich aren’t that far behind the Magpies, with Paul Lambert’s side conceding seven themselves. Throw in Dowd’s eight penalties awarded – given at a rate greater than one in three – and the fact that his last was against Newcastle (missed by Blackburn’s David Dunn in Gameweek 23) and we have a prime candidate for some spot kick action. Demba Ba and Grant Holt are the likely beneficiaries.

Mike Dean

Finally, with 11 penalties given in his 22 games this season, Dean’s one in two average makes him a shoo-in on these pages. His penalty roadshow moves on to The Etihad stadium for Wednesday night’s rearranged clash between former leaders Manchester City and Roberto Di Matteo’s resurgent Chelsea. Spot kick duties for these two sides are fresh in the mind after both netted from 12 yards in their respective European games; Frank Lampard for Chelsea in their 4-1 win over Napoli (incidentally, while both Juan Mata and Didier Drogba were also on the pitch) and Mario Balotelli in City’s European exit at the hands of Sporting Lisbon (stepping up as expected ahead of Sergio Agüero).

Nice article. It gives more more confidence in Ba and tells me RVP as vice captain is a good idea.

He does get the odd penalty save too. However you always have to back the penalty taker in these comparisons

Must say the captaincy this week doesn't concern me much, giving it to Rooney that is. The way I see it he's more than likely to start. If SAF feels he isn't 100% he's not going to risk bringing him on as sub so it's highly likely a start or not in the squad.

If Rooney misses out it's no biggie since ye have guys like RVP or Dempsey for vc.

Unlike Fulham's last match at the cottage against Wolves, they won't have so much possession. Tough to call since Swansea are a bit iffy on the road but i'd see it being tight enough, maybe 2-1. And you'd have to fancy Dempsey grabbing something with his home record.

Everton are bloody unpredictable, but tight at home. Gary Neville did a quality analysis on their Spurs match where he basically outlined that Spurs' lack of width played into their hands. No Lennon, Bale coming into the centre too much and neither full back bombing forward cost them but i'd assume Ox, Walcott and Sagna will take advantage of this.
Everton being in mid-table obscurity means they'll probably put everything into the cup match and their game against Arsenal will be their 4th match in 11 days while Arsenal will have had over a weeks rest. Still can't see Arsenal scoring more than 2 but it still has to be RVP (v) imo.

I'm (c)ing him as well, but it's possible that he might be benched and come on if needed. It's a bit different to RVP at Arsenal - they've got no other strikers, Utd have.

If Nani's back they'll have pretty much all their attacking options available against the current whipping boys of the PL. Just can't see United winning by less than 2 goals, Rooney or no Rooney.

    Evening all,

    How is this looking?

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Evans, Simpson, Enrique Kelly, (Cahill)
    Silva, Demps Bale, (Dyer, McClean)
    Rooney (c), BA, RVP

I have a free transfer but only thing I can see worth doing is Silva > Young, but have a feeling Young could be rested at Wolves.

So, stick with this team or any transfer suggestions?

Evening lads. Will I have 11 on the field this GW? I am feeling cold feet a little bit. I am not tempted by anybody so I want to save it if possible.

    Hart (Vorm)
    Senderos, Jevans, Skrtel
    Demps, Bale, Morrison, Siggy
    RVP, Rooney, Ba
    bench: Simpson, Sess, Komp

My only bench is Simpson and he is doubtful. Anything could happen till Wednesday in the FA cups game. Also question marks about Senderos starting role, Rooney's "knock" and Ba was "tired" last week.

    Thanks,

Ba has had a weeks rest so he should start surely. Rooney is expected to start as well. It comes down to Senderos but I'm picking he will still start.

im doing nani --> young just because

    1) all rivals in my league have young
    2) young is in form
    3) nani is not in form and injury risk

    justifies my transfer

    cheers

I have Nani and I'm leading my league by 60 points. Don't have Rooney or Evans. Will probably hold tight on Nani and get Evans. Don't have enough money to get Rooney (who is a slight doubt) but I may pick up Chicarito...unless I here otherwise regarding Nani. Unfortunately Sir Alex is pretty tight lipped about team selection and injuries.

They' ll win 0-5 over Wolves, even if they had travelled to space and went to the Wordls end with Jack Sparrow.

Whats a man gotta do to get a response???!!!!

    How is this looking?

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Evans, Simpson, Enrique Kelly, (Cahill)
    Silva, Demps Bale, (Dyer, McClean)
    Rooney (c), BA, RVP

I have a free transfer but only thing I can see worth doing is Silva > Young, but have a feeling Young could be rested at Wolves.

So, stick with this team or any transfer suggestions?

Looking all set to me, team looks good! would save your transfer, I was thinking about the silva to young transfer too but would think about doing it next week instead.
