Earlier in the season Dimitar Berbatov almost prompted me into using my precious Wildcard. A sublime hat-trick at home to Liverpool sent the pulse racing and the urge to tinker seemed overwhelming. The Bulgarian looked irresistible and, having been handed a modest price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, almost essential.

Thoughts gathered, I managed to keep the knee from jerking and my Wildcard remained intact. I spent the Gameweeks that followed thanking my lucky stars that I’d resisted as Berbatov, without the influence of Wayne Rooney alongside him, struggled to recall similar form. He proved to be anything but essential.

Today, the day I actually did throw my FPL Wildcard into the ring, the Berbatov bomb exploded once more. Five goals in a 7-1 mauling of Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford will grab the headlines on day when the Premier League went off the rails – 36 goals in total – not a clean sheet in sight. Madness…

Such insanity can be problematic for Fantasy Managers. The irony of such an avalanche of goals and such an individual performance on the day I play my Wildcard is not lost on me. In many ways I’m relieved; my tinkering itch has been well and truly scratched in the last 24 hours – the urge for more squad surgery is exhausted.

For others, probably thousands of others, Berbatov’s incredible performance and record FPL points haul will doubtless lead to one of the biggest bandwagons in memory. Tonight the scalpels will be out, hurried calculations will be made, points hits considered, more sleep lost. Berbatov has once again caused a big stir in our community. Not bad for a player who is often accused of failing to break sweat on the pitch.

And no, I didn’t sign Berbatov with my Wildcard but I’m happy enough regardless. My day and my Wildcard was anything but spectacular, but I’m content enough to opt out of the frenzy that Berbatov will cause and for that, I’m thankful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lol! I was mad when Samba scored, I had Rafael and lets face it, 7-1 is hardly better than 7-0! Must of seen it coming though, I had 3 Utd, Capt Rooney and benched Robbo!

My rival has Jones (no assists no goals this season) and there isn't much difference between defender and defensive midfielder, but Samba is huge and can score goals, but sadly I have no funds for him.

I reckon it's to do with influence and distribution. Typically, players like Brunt and Jara will have more touches/tackles/passes in a game than Cahill. Also, there were 4 other scorers in today's game, so lots of competition maybe(?)

Now that Arteta is out there's another spot in the midfield. Obviously he won't be the direct replacement, but he could find himself a place after the midfield pack gets shuffled. At his price I don't see too much of a problem with waiting and seeing.

Arteta wont be in the middle though will he?! Moyes has to go Rodwell and Cahill (unless he puts Bily in as a straight swap - unlikely in my opinion)

Coleman isnt a winger, he has done ok but he is so much more effective on the overlap from full back. The lad can run all day so its a waste to have him in just one part of the pitch.

Baines, maybe.... he's said before he'd like to take them but Saha is more likely if he's on the pitch.

Bily would be the most like for like swap but I think Rodwell will come in instead. If so, Rodwell and Cahill may well take it in turns going forwards

well, I heard Hibbert got a bit of a roasting - wouldn't bother me if Coleman was at rb (apart from the fact that so far he hasn't looked that great defensively) - still good to have a cheap stake in Everton's cleanies.

Moyes went 4-3-3 in the second half, albeit for three minutes until Arteta acted a prat.

        Neville - Jagielka - Distin - Baines

        Pienaar - Cahill - Arteta

        Anichebe - Saha - Beckford

I got excited when I noticed but then saw the red card come out and it was all downhill from there.

I think a lot of people will lose 3+ players if it's called off.

I'll have Malouda, Drogba, Simpson and possibly Carroll out.

Need to get rid of mummy tonight before the price drop. I think I may go for Kolarov as citys fixtures look nice. I already have Toure but may keep both while fixtures are good then offload one of them when oxfords stiffen up.

What you guys think? I have bosingwa jara and Coleman as other defenders.

You've got 8.0 in the bank, a 0.1 price drop shouldn't bother you too much. I'd wait, never know if there might be cancellations next week, injuries to your good players.

Elmo to Kol isn't a bad idea, but yeah, maybe transfer one of your Citeh defs out when the fixtures get harder.

What's going on with Chelsea? What's the problem? Just crucial injuries (JT, Lamps) mixed with staff changes and a couple of bad results?

Also, what were those two red cards in the Ajax vs Real match about?

Interesting reading about Berbatov this morning, articles saying he's got 6 months to prove he's got what it takes to be a United player, and that he was £30M blah blah blah...

in the ajax real match both alonso and ramos were on yellow cards

after the group stages suspensions r wiped clean
so mourinho told them both to get intentionally sent off so they wud miss the next game (which would make no difference as they are already through and top their group) so that they could be yellow card free in the next round

Do you mean "after the group stages CARDS r wiped clean", but if they had been yellow carded in the next game, they would have been suspended for the Last 16, yeah? I think I get it. Pretty weird. Could just not play them next game, surely?

Essien is by far the biggest loss. Lampard and EBJT are too, but that can be pinned down to Chelsea letting Ballack and Carvalho go in the summer, leaving them short in those areas.

I can't see how Wilkins' departure would have affected results, he was just the bloke who put the cones out at the beginning of training.

And Berbatov is still a luxury player. He can score 100 goal at home to Blackburn, fergie still won't play him in the big games unless Rooney's injured (PS Liverpool at home doesn't count as a big game).

I think the real problem is the manner of Wilkins' departure- completely undermined ancelotti...

I also heard a rumour on twitter that he was apparently looking to manage United in the future...... (ancelotti, not Wilkins)

Your Cantona counterpart is right though, Jose's not going to be in it for the long haul (I suppose you could argue not many managers are).

There's also no guaranteeing he'd be available when Fergie's ticker does fail him.

Apparently he has a clause in hid contract saying he can leave any summer he wishes. I'm not sure i'd want him as Utd manager frankly, i'd prefer Guardiola, but SAF loves him, he loves english football and he clearly loves the history of Man Utd. Nailed on.

I'd never deny it's a job he's got earmarked as one he wants to do in his career, it just doesn't always just pan out like that.

Not too sure about Guardiola myself. He's inherited the most talented team on the planet, being United manager (especially in the current climate) is a whole new ball game.

When Arsene packs it in, I'd like a bit of Spaletti or Louie Blanc, but I'd probably be alone on that front.

Guardiola's team plays attacking, free flowing football and he is committed to developing youth players unlike Jose. Considering Utd have completely changed their transfer policy to predominantly identify outstanding youth players, i'd say he's perfect for the job.

On a seperate note, how's your faith in le prof? I can't see how Arsenal have progressed at all in 5 years. The thought of Jose, SAF, Ancelotti, Benitez?! going 5 years without a trophy is ridiculous.

Completely different club though. Arsenal are only still where we are because of Wenger. With anyone else, we'd have done a Liverpool ages ago.

And we're right in the title picture this season, despite having our best three players plagued with injuries all season.

over the last 6 weeks my captains have scored 32 pts, and Nani got 10 of them last week! Perhaps i should let you all know who i'm picking on a Friday so you can have someone else. Those that have Drogba can sleep easy tonight. I've had him for most of those weeks, this week i didn't but my mini league rival has, therefore he'll get at least 2 goals tomorrow!

I can beat (be shitter than) that, a whooping 30 points. Dreamy.

i can feel your pain, we've had the same (c) for the last few weeks, the only difference is swhen you went with fabs. He must have scored 3 when drog scored 4 over those 2 weeks!

Since GW 7 I've only had 10 point plus captain twice, it's bloody ruining my team.

the game will be on......i'm sure they would have called it off by now to stop the 27 chelsea fans travelling north.

Fair point, but they won't call it off until the next motherload of snow has actually fallen......

I'm pretty sure the folks at St James' will have a cover on the pitch and the undersoil heating on high tomorrow morning! I'm sure it'll go ahead.
