When are the FPL Blank and Double Gameweeks likely to happen?

The upcoming Fantasy Premier League Blank and Double Gameweeks are now starting to come into focus.

Preparing for these early on can provide you with an opportunity to climb the ranks and outscore your mini-league rivals later in the campaign.

In this article, we’ll be assessing when the altered Gameweeks are likely to fall.

What are Blank and Double Gameweeks?

A Blank occurs when a Premier League fixture is postponed and rescheduled to a different Gameweek.

The two teams involved in the postponed fixture will not play in the Blank Gameweek, but they play two matches in the Gameweek that the fixture is moved to. This creates a Double Gameweek.

The most common reason for postponements in FPL is when fixtures clash with the later rounds of the two main domestic cup competitions.

This season, postponements will be caused by clashes with the EFL Cup final (Gameweek 27), the FA Cup quarter-finals (Gameweek 31) and the FA Cup semi-finals (Gameweek 33).

The postponements in Gameweeks 27 and 31 are certain to cause Blanks as there is a full round of Premier League fixtures in the midweek after Gameweek 27 and there’s an international break immediately after Gameweek 31.

The postponements in Gameweek 33 are also very likely to cause Blanks because there are Champions League quarter-finals in the following midweek. Premier League matches are rarely played on the same night as matches from UEFA’s elite club competition.

What do we know about this season’s Blank Gameweeks?

We will start by looking at the fixtures in each of the upcoming Blank Gameweeks.

You will notice in the screenshots that each fixture has a “Blank Percentage” which is the probability of the fixture becoming a Blank, calculated using the bookies’ odds for either team to reach the stage of the cup competition that occurs on the same weekend.

Gameweek 27

Although it has not officially been postponed yet, we can safely assume that Everton vs Manchester City will be a Blank fixture. Pep Guardiola’s men won the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Burton Albion by a 9-0 scoreline, effectively sending them to Wembley already.

The second Blank fixture in Gameweek 27 will either be Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea vs Brighton.

This Blank will be decided next Thursday night when Chelsea host Tottenham in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final. Spurs won the first leg 1-0 but will be without Harry Kane and Son Heung-min for the second.

Gameweeks 31 and 33

The FA Cup third round has now been completed, which saw seven Premier League teams already falling at the first hurdle.

We now know that Fulham vs Liverpool will definitely go ahead in Gameweek 31.

We also know that Huddersfield vs Leicester and Southampton vs Liverpool will both be played in Gameweek 33 as planned.

The other 17 fixtures in these Gameweeks are still at risk of becoming Blanks.

Crucially, that means Liverpool are currently the only team who we know will not have a Blank fixture caused by clashes with the EFL or FA Cups.

Furthermore, the Reds will only get a Double Gameweek this season if one of their fixtures is postponed (and moved to another Gameweek) due to another reason, such as bad weather.

Gameweek 31 will clash with the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, causing a maximum of eight Blank fixtures. Gameweek 33 will clash with the semi-finals of the FA Cup, causing a maximum of four Blank fixtures.

The fourth round of the FA Cup is on the weekend of January 26th, which means it does not clash with FPL. It takes place a few days before the Gameweek 24 deadline.

Likewise, the fifth round of the FA Cup does not clash with the Premier League either. It will be played on the weekend of February 16th, a week before the Gameweek 27 deadline.

Also, there won’t be any fifth round replays in 2018/19. That means all the Gameweek 31 Blanks will be confirmed before the Gameweek 27 deadline.

In each of the last two seasons, the FA Cup quarter-finals have caused six postponements and the semi-finals have caused four. It is unlikely to create that many again this year.

Based on the Blank percentages, there will probably be three to five Blank fixtures in Gameweek 31 and two to four in Gameweek 33.

What do we know about this season’s Double Gameweeks?

It is impossible to predict exactly how the Blanks fixtures will be rescheduled but we can make logical assumptions based on what has happened in previous years.

In the last three seasons, the later rounds of the domestic cup competitions have caused a total of 33 fixtures to be postponed, 29 of which have been rescheduled to the midweeks in Gameweeks 34 and 37.

These have been the only midweeks towards the end of each campaign that didn’t feature Champions League matches.

It appears as though the Premier League have reached an agreement with UEFA so that rearranged fixtures are only played on the same night as Champions League matches if there are no other available dates.

In 2018/19, the two free midweeks towards the end of the season without Champions League ties are in Gameweeks 32 and 35. Therefore we can confidently predict that the majority of the Blank fixtures will be moved here.

The Gameweek 33 Blanks will be confirmed on the weekend of March 16th, which is only two-and-a-half weeks before the midweek in Gameweek 32

This could mean that the Gameweek 33 Blanks are more likely to be moved to Gameweek 35, and the Gameweek 31 Blanks might be more likely to be moved to Gameweek 32.

Here is this season’s probable Blank and Double Gameweek schedule:

Gameweek

Reason

Blank Gameweek 27

EFL Cup final

Blank Gameweek 31

FA Cup quarter-finals

Double Gameweek 32

Blank Gameweek 33

FA Cup semi-finals

Double Gameweek 35

There is also the possibility that there could be another smaller Double Gameweek if a team gets three Blanks. However, there is no obvious space in the schedule for this.

A rearranged game could perhaps be moved to the same midweek as the Champions League semi-finals in Gameweek 36 or 37 when there’s more likely to be a night when another Premier League team isn’t involved in European action.

In the last six seasons, a total of three top-flight fixtures have been moved to the same night as the knockout stages of the Champions League but, on each occasion, they have been on the same night as fixtures between teams from other European nations.

Chelsea, Man City and Spurs are three of the teams who could get three Blank fixtures due to clashes with the domestic cup competitions but there might not be enough available midweeks to accommodate three rescheduled fixtures if either team were to also reach the semi-finals of the Champions League or Europa League.

To avoid this potential backlog of fixtures, a Gameweek 27 Blank could potentially be brought forward to the midweek in Gameweek 25.

This would not be possible if either team involved in the Blank needed a replay in the FA Cup fourth round and it would also only give fans planning to attend the rescheduled fixture around 11 or 12 days’ notice. This would be particularly unfair to Spurs fans planning to travel to Lancashire to attend their fixture away at Burnley.

If a Gameweek 27 Blank is moved to Gameweek 25, it will be announced a few days before the Gameweek 24 deadline. It seems unlikely to happen, but it is a possibility.

A Gameweek 27 Blank could also be brought forward to the same weekend as the FA Cup fifth round in Gameweek 26 if both teams were to be eliminated in the fourth round.

Stay tuned for another article from Ben Crellin later this week, focussing on the potential strategies to help us navigate the Blank and Double Gameweeks.

When we know more about which teams will and won’t be affected by fixture changes, we will publish some more content.

Who to bench out of this lot?

    Alisson
    Doherty, Robbo, Digne, Shaw, AWB
    Salah(c), fanderson, Rich, Pogba, Deulofeu,
    jiminez, Aguero, Rashford

Thinking AWB, Deulofeu, and one other?

Benching Deulofeu at home to Burnley is mental. That front 8 is a benching headache. If Rich blanks for 4th game in a row you going to keep playing every week?

Maybe only dont like Auba vs Man City but oh well

    Fab
    Doherty VVD Robbo Digne
    Salah Pogba Anderson Richa
    Rashford Auba

    Subs: Button, Camarasa, AWB, Success

    GW23: TAA to VVD(-4)
    GW24: Fab to De Gea
    GW25: Save
    GW26: Digne to Pereira
GW27: Richa VVD to Haz/Eriksen Diop

    Gives this for 27:
    De Gea
    Doherty Rice Robbo Pereira

Considering kiko has a string of 1pters since forever and Watford don't seem to care about defending is it worth taking a -4 to get either Alli or firmino in and drop kiko to the bench? Got 5.4m itb, so success or camarasa can be upgraded.

RP. Any more thoughts on which fodders you have and want? Midfield or Forward?

My biggest dilemma right now is what to do with Kamara.

I want 3 outfield players with a blank in GW27 to hopefully give me more DGW players going forward. At the moment I have 3: Digne, Sterling and Sane, but contemplating buying another in Alli (potential blanker) or maybe late, KDB (cert), and then selling Digne for Pereira or something.

However, Kamara is screwing it all up, as I can only bench 2 GW27 blankers instead of 3. It's possible to switch the fodder to a decent midfield option in Puncheon or Camarasa, but I don't really want to spend the extra transfer re-jigging, nor lose a midfield slot.

Does anybody have similar frustrations with Kamara or where to save the most money in their team?

Who are the best cheap forwards to consider with GW27 in mind? If we're lucky, Kamara will still exist and could feature away to WHU. If we're not lucky, who is there?

    - Success (4.6), with a great fixture (car) who isn't worth the FT at the moment as his place is far from secure.

    - Zahore (4.6) (WAT), who could be a saviour if he's fit and preferred to Niasse

    - Niasse (5.0) (WAT) if he's preferred to Zahore (but this would probably be the limit of my budget)

    - Andone (5.0) (che) seems too much for limited minutes and tough fixture

    - Vokes (5.3) (TOT) could be a blank gameweek. If not, he's not worth the money for the fixture imo.

    - Caroll (5.4) (FUL) could be the answer if he playing time increases, which it may well do. He could even be useful as a rotation option in general, but currently not worth the investment.

    - Ings (ars) (5.5) again seems too much for this role as an injury risk and away at the Emirates

    - Llorente (5.6) (bur) again too expensive. If you go here, you would likely restructure your team with a Camarasa anyway.

Basically, it looks worse than slim pickings. It looks likely that those with Kamara will have to let him rot (which I don't want to do with blanks coming up) or restructure. What do you reckon?

Morning D. You're a hot topic machine these days.

A bit of background/waffle first to preface my thoughts on your question.

It's not how I'm set up at the moment, but for me the key us to maximise the number of playing midfielders. This is for several reasons, the main things for me being that midfielders more than ever are playing in the front three of an attacking team (and FPL hasn't really caught up with this phenomenon with its scoring system).

Given that some midfielders can score as many goals as many strikers do, you can add an extra point per goal and the occasional clean sheet point as well.

So If we are playing with five midfielders you can only have two forwards. One of those HAS to be bargain basement in my opinion. We discussed a while back the issue of a playing vs. a weak bench. My argument for a weak bench was that you often need to pay a lot of money for the player to consistently outscore the most likely possible score which is 2 points. If you are counting on a player coming off the bench, you don't have the luxury of significant investment in that player, nor are you likely to have chosen him for the fixture in question.

This means that as long as you can be fairly sure of getting 2 points off your bench, with an outside chance of further returns, this is enough.

With all this said - I wouldn't spend more thasn about 5m and I don't like any of the options you outline! It's unfortunate timing that there are no secure 4.5-5m options available at the moment.

So, in honesty, take a punt. Go leftfield. Maybe go for low ownership. Does it matter if your third striker gets one or two points off your bench considering the fact that a.) it's one point and b.) you probably won't need that point anyway.

Long is probably one to monitor, at least in the very short term, considering Gabbiadini's departure. Ings is back but he never stays fit for long. You won't get 2 points from Shane but you will get the occasional late goal/assist from him.

Solanke is a great shout too.

Hey RedArrows. Some other replies to this thread: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19728568

Yeah it's a shame that HTs become dead within a couple of hours normally. Wish there was another way.

I think I agree with your assessment that midfield is too precious to waste a spot, at least at the moment (don't forget fewer baps for goals, though). It more depends on the individuals available than trying to cover a trend in football imo, but the result is the same right now. There could be benefit from having a decent fodder option, but probably not likely enough (or not enough points) to outweigh the extra points from playing 5 mids, especially since it would cost FTs to switch.

I need someone for GW27 though at least, so I don't expect Long is worth it, without even the security of 2 points. May as well stick with Kamara, even for 0 points tbh, but will monitor them both along with Solanke 🙂

        Many thanks for your reply

Could switch out Wilson for Jimmy but thinking of saving FT until next week.

    Agree?

Good feedback - will look at who to bench this week. Going forward (e.g. next week with 2 ft) need to look at an upgrade and a downgrade to avoid may too much cash sat on bench!

    What would you do?

    Fab Pat
    Alonso Kola AWB Doherty Schindler
    Hazard Salah Pogba Richo Martial
    Rashford Jimmy Kamara

    1 FT, 5.1 in bank

    a) Pool defender
    b) Man City mid

    d) save FT
    e) something else

    Cheers.

I think I'd want a Pool defender in, probably for Kola as I just can't trust that Arsenal def although I see his appeal due to attacking threat.

However, depends how you feel about the triple Man U attack. I have the same 3 but am considering selling Martial (instead of Rich) for Salah this week. You confident on Martial game time ? If not maybe ditch him for a City mid and wait on Pool defence for another week.

Maybe my view is skewed as a frustrated Arsenal fan who are sick of watching the team concede time and again. Defence a major issue for the Gunners. That said I own Digne for attacking threat so I'm a little hypocritical I guess.

Late reply here (US west coaster)... nice team you've got. I did your "B" choice this week with Sance since I already had a Pool defender. I'd be tempted to do C for a hit if I were you because of the cash you have on hand and the odds of both a good Man City haul and a Pool clean sheet (and tough games for Kola, AWB, and Schindler this GW). I'm hoping I get at least 3-4 starts out of Sane before their blank in GW27... and may keep him beyond that depending on how Pep lines up with Mendy back around that time.

Anything worth a hit here? 3.4itb. Basically, would you take a hit to get rid of TAA or just wait for next weeks FT? Was hoping to bring in a City mid soon too.

    Alisson
    Doherty, Luiz, Digne, Shaw
    Salah, Haz, Rich, Anderson, Pogba
    Jimenez

The RMT tool telling me to bench F.Anderson!
    What do youse think?

    Fab (Hamer)
    Doherty, Kola, Bednarek (Luiz, AWB)
    Salah, Fraser, Hazard, Pogba (F.Anderson)
    Auba, Rash, Jim

Was Jim rested last game? I've a feeling he's going off the boil and should be the one to make way for Fando.

Jiminez was only taken off cos of the Boly RC. Twas tactical.

He hasn't gone off the boil...24pts in the last 6 games. 4ppm in games including City, Liverpool and Spurs! That's very decent especially for the price.

Fixtures easing, Leicester is a great game for him, I expect returns.
