Antonio Valencia looks irresistible right now. While you read this, at the current rate of acquisition, a dozen or so Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will have snapped him up for their squads. By the time you stop reading this, you may well join them.

Is it unthinkable to ignore Valencia’s appeal? Certainly there are alternatives for a midfield slot in our squads – notably Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, a player who has grown in stature this season, not least in the recent run of results that has seen the Gunners push Spurs aside in the race for third.

Using the data available, including our own ICT Index and Opta’s statistics, we examine Valencia and Walcott’s credentials, weighing up the value of the United man whilst discussing a scenario where the “unthinkable” could apply…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So hows this looking for this GW?:

    Vorm
    Kompany | Cahill | Evans
    Valencia | Sigurdsson | Silva | Bale
Pogrebnyak | Van Persie | Rooney

    Krul | McClean | Caulker | Kilgallon

Should I play McClean or Caulker ahead of Pogrebnyak?

Think i’ll be shipping Pogrebnyak out next GW, maybe doing Pogrebnyak & McClean > Hoilett & Sessegonon.

Long been needing to get rid of Kilgallon but think the above maybe more beneficial.

    SAF on Scholes:

"If it’s desperation, bringing the best mid in Britain for the last 20 years back, then I think we can accept that. If you talk about desperation, they played a player [Carlos Tevez] the other night who refused to go on the pitch. The manager said he’d never play again and he takes a five-month holiday in Argentina…What is that? Could that come under the description of desperation?"

    Absolutely spot on.

I think both instances were desperation. Scholes came back because United were crippled with injuriesat the time like Jones, Cleverly, Anderson, Smalling, etc. The same for City, Tevez came back because City are lacking something big time.

Exactly, so it was to United's advantage to have him back, as he wouldve known the way they play and saves time weening in some fresh meat on short notice. Both were desperate moves just different circumstances

    Hi all.
There seems to be a lot of love around these parts for a certain Mr Thomas Vermaelen since his recent match winning, goal scoring and clean sheet heroics. I have no doubt that he is virtually unrivalled as a defender in his potential to provide big points hauls, however, a note of caution:

Despite tightening up a bit recently, Arsenal still don’t keep that many clean sheets compared to Utd/City for example. Clean sheets are obviously the bread and butter points for any decent defensive pick, (and especially one with his price tag) attacking points are a welcome and highly profitable bonus, but a bonus nonetheless. What I am trying to say is that as much as I really like the Verm and am very tempted to get him in myself, I’m just not sure whether I should. He certainly wasn’t in my plans prior to his last 2 matches, with a return in the previous 6 that read: 1, 5, 1, 2, 1, 1.

It’s possible that he may continue his goal scoring form but how likely do you think that is? He had a little purple patch earlier in the season, loads transferred him in and then promptly transferred him back out again as the attacking returns dried up and left him without the backup of a decent return of clean sheet points to keep things ticking over.

I’m really undecided over this and could do with some opinions, one way or the other as to whether you think he’s worth getting in when possible, or if it just seems like chasing after last week’s points with crazily jerking knees?!

I guess for those still doubled up on Liv defence from the double gameweek it’s an easy decision but if not, who are people selling to accommodate him?

One thing that does seem slightly bonkers to me is when I see people saying they are taking points hits to swap out someone like Kompany for Verm. Komps next 6 (assuming he is fit this weekend) are: (sto) (SUN) (ars) (WBA) (nor) (wol). I reckon there could be 3-4 clean sheets amongst those and every chance that Vinnie could possibly score/assist himself, don’t you think?

You always go on about how they don't score goals.
anyway, the 2 goals in 14 is hardly fair, considering he was playing out of his natural position the majority of the time.
Nor does it matter in the long run, his PPG is higher than any other regular playing defender (Only Kolarov and Vidic are ahead of him)

I make fun of Chelsea's defense way more than their scoring. Their scoring has, indeed, been down lately. That doesn't mean its not a tough fixture, it just means I think their fantasy assets are poor.

Also, I though the case was that Verm is super deadly on set pieces? He was on just as many set pieces playing LB as when he was playing CB.

PPG is well and good, but a defender on a team that struggles for clean sheets and went 12 games without any goals or assists isn't much to pay 6.7 for.

Yea I was tempted to hit the transfer button for Skrtel --> Vermaelen but i took a deep breath and realised it'll probably end in disaster. No point in knee jerking and taking hits at this stage of the season when ya have other players who can still rack up the points

Exactly the transfer I would make to get him in but I'm not convinced. Despite the QPR debacle, Livs fixtures are good and who knows by 5pm tomorrow Skrt could be sitting on 12 points with a goal and clean sheet....fingers crossed. Alternatively we could be ruing the fact we didn't swap him for the Verm!

Paying extra for offensive defenders = one of the bigger mistakes people make in this games.

      2 goals in 2.

      or, wait.....

      2 goals in 14, really.

Save your cash. Arsenal defense is still poor.

It comes down to the players who patchy but big scorers or consistent scorers. (see Chris Glover's last article) Eg:

      Verm's:1, 5, 1, 2, 1, 1, 10, 15 = 4.5 PPG whereas let's say....

      Evra: 1, 6, 3, 2, 2, 5, 6, 6 = 3.875 PPG

Evra is arguably another option around Verm's price but even with far more clean sheets isn't matching Verm over a long period due to his goal threat.

It depends whether you want him for a long period or not. With these fixtures:

ASTON VILLA qpr MAN CITY wolves WIGAN

I'd argue the sooner the better 😀 Patience may be required but ultimately the transfer comes off!

Exactly as you say: If you buy Vermaelen you've got to stick with him really to reap the rewards. He will deliver a monster score from time to time but you have to brace yourself for all the 1 and 2 pointers that may come in between and decide if you're happy with that.

Is Verm an Ars. Corner target? (Like Hangland was last season.)

If Chelsea beat Benfica then their game against Newcastle can't be arranged in GW34 as they will be playing Champions League semi-final first leg. it also couldn't be in GW35 as that would clash with the second leg.

Which leaves two choices - GW36 which would be good for Chelsea (QPR, NEW) and ok for Newcastle (wig, che) or the less enticing GW37 option of Chelsea (liv, NEW) and Newcastle (MCI, che).

GW36 is probably the more likely option, especially if Chelsea make the final as their Liverpool match would have to be rearranged for mid-week 37.

So worth thinking about working Chelsea and Newcastle players in for GW36 if they go well against Benfica.

Could be any of GW34-37. Bolton will also have the match against Spurs to rearrange. Think it is likely one of the two will be in GW34, but is possible that Bolton could have two DGWs as there are no European fixtures to worry about.

Seems the consensus is for Silva to be benched.. So, may need to rely on first sub..

Current bench order: Dempsey MartinR Kelly

Demps unlikey to score... Norwich clean sheet worth a punt except It seems Martin has fallen out of favour in recent weeks...

Question is.. Do I bench Martin ahead of Demps with the slim chance of his start + risk of him coming on as late sub... Or stick with Demps as first sub and expect Fulhams first goal at OT nice 2006??

A or B guys, I would really appreciate any advice:

A: Sorensen to Bogdan or Vorm (Krul other keeper)
B: Moses to Siggy (other mids: Bale, Demps, Valencia, Rosicky - this will mean I can bench Demps)
