Captains

Captain Sensible – Blank Gameweek 27 a tough call

Fantasy Premier League managers face one of the hardest captaincy decisions of the season so far in Blank Gameweek 27.

The absence of fixtures for Manchester City and Chelsea, who were originally scheduled to play favourable opposition in Everton and Brighton, has removed several options from the debate already.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Liverpool, two clubs who normally provide a handful of captain candidates each week, go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

That leaves Fantasy managers with the choice of either boldly handing the armband to one of those players or to look elsewhere.

Arsenal are currently the popular alternative in the search for a captain this week, but with many managers avoiding the Gunners for longer-term reasons, and plenty of viable alternatives elsewhere, we could see a whole host of different skippers this weekend.

As usual, we’ve had a look at the results of our latest poll, analysed each popular player, and some of the less fashionable options, using our members’ data and assessed the offensive and defensive statistics of all the teams involved to find the best candidates.

Captain Poll

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is this week’s poll leader ahead of Southampton’s trip to the Emirates Stadium. The absence of Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) and the meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United will have played a part in Aubameyang’s popularity for this Gameweek, amassing 32% support at the time of writing. Although he has just one goal in the last five Gameweeks, you do have to go back to Gameweek 16 for the last time he failed to find the net at home against a side outside the top six.

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.0m) trip to Burnley has captured the attention of a healthy number of Fantasy managers too. His case appears to be centred around form rather than fixture, the South Korean averaging 8.9 points per appearance since Gameweek 13.

Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) heads up a crop of differential options as West Ham prepare to host the worst defence in the Premier League this season: Fulham. The Brazilian does only have one attacking return in his last seven outings, but the appeal of a home match against such poor opposition may be too much to resist for his owners. Currently, the West Ham midfielder has the backing of 9% of our voters.

Just behind Anderson is Liverpool’s star man Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) on 7% ahead of a trip to Old Trafford. The Egyptian’s form may have slowed a little in recent weeks but he still has six double-figure hauls in the last 11 Gameweeks and remains a key FPL asset to own. The fact that Manchester United are still without a clean sheet at home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may suggest that Sunday’s encounter may not be as tricky as first thought for Salah and his Liverpool attacking colleagues.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) also features in the top five captain candidates for Blank Gameweek 27 according to the poll. The 6% who have backed the Frenchman may have found themselves a shrewd option here. Lacazette was not involved in Thursday night’s Europa League action for Arsenal, which gives him a slight edge over Aubameyang, in terms of security of start.

A few more managers are proving bold enough to look to that Old Trafford showdown as 3.8% have voted for Paul Pogba (£8.8m). The Manchester United midfielder has blanked just once since Solskjaer took over and has averaged 12 points per game at home in that time. With Liverpool’s defence not quite as strong as it was earlier in the season, Pogba looks the most likely of any Red Devil to breach them.

Some slight interest in Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) confirms the popularity of West Ham’s home match against Fulham. 2.5% have selected the Austrian as the best captain candidate for Blank Gameweek 27 despite the fact he has started just once in the last four Gameweeks.

Salomón Rondón (£5.8m), Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) and Callum Paterson (£5.0m) are the only other options above 1% while Harry Kane (£12.4m) is not far behind them on 0.9% backing.

As a West Ham option I'm tempted by Antonio over Anderson - what are people's thoughts on Antonio? Is he nailed on?

I am deciding between Arnie and Anderson. Currently on Anderson, but might switch to Arnie still undecided.
I am in top 7k in the world - if this fails - huge drop incoming but I am willing to take a punt on one of the 2 Hammers.

I was very tempted to hold as a differential but gave in and sold. If it doesnt affect your team this week too much then yes could be worth keeping for at least one more gw

I was all set on getting rid before he came on and scored that worldy against Schalke. I don't think Bernado is as effective on the wing either (especially not in that match) so theres a chance Sane plays his way back into the team.

Tempted now to roll this week and see if Sane starts in the cup final. If he does then that would indicate he's back in favour I feel.

yeah it's a tough one, I don't really see that he didn't anything that warranted being dropped (unless he's being lazy in training or something), firmly believe Sane-Kun-Sterling is their best front-3, seems fairly obvious tbh but who am I to question Josep

Think the wrinkle is that KdB is now back in as a 90% starter and that shifts Bilva out wide.

KdB is looking increasingly good to me and is the long term transfer or hold imo

Yeah he scored the winner against Liverpool (a critical goal in the title race), then backed it up with goals against Wolves and Huddersfield. Had a bit of an off day against Newcastle (the whole side did though) , and has been dropped ever since. Maybe it was to guard against complacency for places in the squad? Who knows.

What I would say though is that Sterling (and Aguero) are certainly more nailed this season. More so than I thought they would be anyway. Don't think Jesus and Mahrez have been in good form this season at all, apart from for brief periods.

KDB is a graveyard player for nostalgic people that have fallen far behind trying for a clever differential that's backfired

                Ha

Not going there just yet. But if he continues to get 90% of matches and takes the creator role in midfield I’m going to look seriously around 32.

Main point is that if Billva remains essential to Pep and KdB plays most that only leaves Sané rotating with Sterling at best and Sterling is unlikely to get much rotation

My best ever OR finish I started with him for 8-10 weeks then killed it for rest of season after I sold him but it wasn't a bad move because I covered it with cheaper players. He never scores reliably high but did enough to keep you hooked. Like Mane this season

Taking into consideration GWs 27-33 (minus GW31, when I'll Free-Hit) would you rather have:

Jimenez & Barnes (or other midfielder up to 6.7)
Rondon & F.Anderson (or other midfielder up to 7.2)

Schlupp seems to have nailed down the left hand side of the midfield 3. Great praise from Hodgson and the fans (who were previously on his back.

Does he have any real competition or is he well set for the next few matches (I need him to stick in the team until GW32). He looks very attacking on games I have seen and is finishing well.

Am I missing anything with him?

think selection is a choice between him and Meyer, they could play both against easier teams but generally only 1 of them I believe

Panic. If I were in your position I would prioritise the doubles. Free hit in one of the blanks and write off the other blank

Blessing in disguise in that surely some of Hudson Odoi, RLC et al will be prioritised. Especially if a manager who focuses on youth is found.
                  Pulisic move unaffected?

70/80 pros on their books. 30 odd out on loan around Europe. one of the strongest youth set-ups in Europe.
Maybe it's time they (like many PL clubs) stopped managing by cheque book.

                Need an advice lads.

Should I play Peltier and roll transfer or should I do Shaw to Chilwell?
I will bench Shaw if I won't ditch him.
