Deeney forces rethink as Wildcard week worsens

Covering Watford’s two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35 became a lot harder after the events of Monday night.

There was a no-show from injured midfielder Gerard Deulofeu (£5.6m), while Troy Deeney (£5.9m) will now miss the next three matches after being sent off.

We’ve got all the effects of Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Vicarage Road in this latest Scout Notes article.

Watford 0-1 Arsenal

Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m)

Assists: None

Andre Gray (£5.9m) may receive some transfer attention in the build-up to Watford’s involvement in Double Gameweek 35. He now looks the most likely of the Hornets forward players to start both matches next week, which see them travel to Huddersfield and host Southampton.

That’s because Deeney is now suspended for three matches following an elbow to the head of Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) in the first half. His sending off was a truly devastating development for those on Wildcards in Double Gameweek 34, when it was already looking bleak anyway. Deeney was selected in 43.59% of Wildcard squads among the top 10,000 managers this week, only Raúl Jiménez (£6.9m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.7m) achieving more backing at that level. Those managers all now have at least one transfer booked in for Double Gameweek 35.

They are probably best holding off for a few days though just to get more information on the fallout. Watford manager Javi Gracia was adamant in his post-match press conference that the referee had made the wrong decision in sending Deeney off, and an appeal could potentially be forthcoming.

“I don’t agree but I respect the referee’s decision. It’s maybe a yellow card. He doesn’t have to explain to me anything. I could see the play. I could see the contact with his arm but never his elbow. I don’t understand that decision. I never saw an aggression in the movement. I don’t understand why the referee took that decision.” – Javi Gracia

Meanwhile, Deulofeu was not in the matchday squad after picking up an ankle injury in Watford’s FA Cup semi-final earlier this month.. He now has just two starts in the last four matches and is now even less likely to get significant game-time in the Double Gameweek. Obviously, we should wait and see what Gracia says in the coming days but for now the situation does not look too positive for him, furthering the claims that Gray is perhaps the best option to look at. In the last six Gameweeks, Deulofeu is the only Watford player to boast better minutes per chance than Gray.

Gracia initially diverted from his usual 4-4-2 formation to line the Hornets up in a 3-5-2. Daryl Janmaat (£4.9m) joined Christian Kabasele (£4.4m) and Craig Cathcart (£4.5m) in the back-three with Adam Masina (£4.3m) and Kiko Femenía (£4.2m) flanking central midfielders Will Hughes (£4.9m), Etienne Capoue (£4.8m) and Abdoulaye Doucouré (£5.9m).

The latter has been considered as a viable option for investing in Watford’s upcoming pair of fixtures based on his security of starts and two goals in Double Gameweek 32. In the last six Gameweeks, he is also top for goal attempts, shots in the box and joint-top for efforts on target among Watford players. Also of encouragement for those looking to Doucouré in Double Gameweek 35, was that he took up some advanced positions in the early exchanges on Monday night. That ended as soon as Deeney was sent off and Gracia had to change shape, but it could be something he has the licence to do next week.

Ben Foster (£4.6m) was at the heart of the only goal of the game ahead of expected significant involvement in Double Gameweek 35 Bench Boost squads. Receiving a pass back from Kiko Femenía, he completely underestimated the pace of Aubameyang, who closed him down in time to block the goalkeeper’s clearance and direct it into the net. That obviously won’t inspire a huge amount of confidence in Foster owners, but he does have the benefit of playing goal-shy Huddersfield Town in the first of his Double Gameweek matches at least.

“I’ve gone to kick it and before I know it he’s bloody on me. To be fair, he’s absolutely rapid. I spoke to Bernd Leno at the end of the game and he said ‘it’s not your fault, he’s too quick’. I’m gutted for the lads, though.” – Ben Foster

Unai Emery pulled the rug from under the feet of Fantasy managers once again as he benched Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) for Monday night’s game. The Frenchman seemed the more likely of Arsenal’s senior strikers to start the match considering it was him who had his minutes managed against Napoli last Thursday, not Aubameyang. It was simply another example of how unpredictable Emery’s team selections are this season.

His decisions on the back-four ensured that Arsenal kept their first clean sheet away from home this season when their most popular defender was on the bench. Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m) was left among the substitutes, with Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) deployed at left-back. That meant Konstantinos Mavropanos (£4.7m) earned his first start of the season at centre-back alongside Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m), with Sokratis Papastathopoulous (£5.1m) suspended. Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m) was used at right-back again and was arguably one of the better players on the field, top of clearances, block and interceptions among Arsenal players in the match.

Arsenal lost a little bit of control in the second half when Emery started to make changes. He went to a back-three of Monreal, Mustafi and Koscielny but in bringing on young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi (£4.4m) for Mavropanos only caused confusion at the back, which Watford thrived on. Emery then had to revert back to a four-man defence by bringing Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) on for Aaron Ramsey (£7.1m).

“I didn’t do these decisions to get all the control I want. I changed to a 4-2-3-1 with Ainsley. The anxiety in our team was also because in the second half they can take some moments to score. We worked well on set pieces and second actions.” – Unai Emery

As for that clean sheet itself, Arsenal probably owe it to a combination of Deeney’s dismissal and an impressive performance from Bernd Leno (£4.9m). Watford were obviously limited to a certain extent in their captain’s absence and a man down but still fashioned chances, hence why Arsenal’s goalkeeper was called into action regularly. After a shaky start to life in north London, Leno has gone from strength-to-strength in recent weeks. He made some excellent saves from Cathcart and Capoue to earn huge praise from the local press and by the end of the evening, the Arsenal fans were chanting his name.

“(Leno) has confidence and helps us a lot. He is competitive with Cech, giving them two competitions. They are both giving us a lot in goal.” – Unai Emery

Emery will now be sweating on the fitness of Torreira after he had to come out of the game at half-time. It was reported after the match that he was feeling some pain in his groin and that he might miss the Europa League quarter-final second leg in Naples. To stress his contribution to the team, Torreira won the ball back 10 times at Vicarage Road, more than any of his team-mates, despite playing just 45 minutes.

“It was a very physical match today but we can respond well. Torreira is the same problem like Thursday. It’s the same problem as Thursday.” – Unai Emery

Watford XI (4-3-1-2): Foster; Masina (Sema 86′), Cathcart, Kabasele, Janmaat; Doucouré, Capoue, Kiko Femenía (Success 59′); Hughes; A Gray, Deeney.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Monreal, Koscielny, Mavropanos (Guendouzi 59′), Mustafi; Xhaka, Torreira (Özil 45′); Iwobi, Ramsey (Maitland-Niles 68′), Mkhitaryan; Aubameyang.

anyone with the BB chip left saving it instead...?

    my bench is currently:

    Speroni Dunk Duffy Hudson-Odoi

pre transfers, so not sure its worth it at the moment.

Mine is Ryan / Duffy / Deeney / Valery.

Can't use it with that. Looking at alternatives. Most likely 36.

Think if you've got (for eg) Deulofeu and Bertrand instead of my two, then it's potentially still worth doing in 35.

Built team around using it in 35 so not sure I’d be able to change lanes now (although bench currently includes Deeney, Knockaert and Kolasinac - hold on!).

Last few weeks feel like they’ve been most tactical to prepare for in the 10 years I’ve played this game, yet the outcome has been the most unpredictable I could have imagined (and sh!t for me) so think will just let fate take its course now...!

I only have 4 DGWs currently and some SGW players with bad matchups. So I'm looking at 36 or 37 to BB.

Feel very fortunate the WC template had a bad week, but I'm dreading all the BBs that will be in play next week.

So with two transfers I can change my Bench Boost from this in 35:
Ryan (wol/tot); Duffy (wol/tot); Deeney (ban); Valery! (new/wat)

      To this in 36:
Ryan (NEW); Duffy (NEW); Zaha (EVE); Doherty (wat).

So 6 away games with one injury doubt vs 3 homes.

Or, I just do Deeney -> Gray and roll with it for 35.

Morning people. I need your help. Like many of us I've completely ruined my very decent team with my wildcard and need help to know what to fix first for DGW35.

Players that are on the chopping block : Duffy, Dunk, Valery, Kolasinac, Deulofeu & Lacazette.

Players I'm reasonably happy with: Edersen, Foster, Doherty, Jota, Son, Eriksen, Sterling, Aguero, Jimenez.

Q1 - 1FT - what would you do to get a decent XI out for DGW35 (happy to take a -8)
Q2 - BB - was planning to use this in DGW35 - is it worth it now or wait until a later GW when I might have patched my team up a bit.

With Deeney out, worth doing some of the following for -4?

    A) Deeney/Eriksen to Llorente/Salah
    B) Deeney/Camarasa to Firmino/Højbjerg
    B) Deeney/Camarasa to Ings/Højbjerg

Also have Son, Sterling, KDB, Aguero and Jimenez

      Got same challenge:

      A) Eriksen/Deeney (-4) to Moura + Rashford/Wilson.
      B) Eriksen/Deeney (-4) to Doucore + Firmino
      C) Dunk/Deeney (-4) to Bednarek + Gray/Ings
      C) Deeney to Gray/Ings

      Have no other Watford atm.
Have 3 x Brighton def atm.
      Got Salah/Son/Lloris

Does anyone know the EO of Brighton defence this week?

Only got Duffy. So obviously need a goal, just wonder how badly off I would be if they do keep a CS.

Probably the difference between a red and green arrow. Either way I think it's been a fairly successful week without a wildcard.

      Duffy 71%
      Dunk 29%

Duffy with 23% captaincy in top 10K so an EO of 94%

For those who own Deeney, does his red and three match ban significantly change your post-wildcard plans?

Who are the options you're looking at for replacing Deeney? What are the pros and cons of those options and who are you looking at going with?

Is anyone who was planning on GW35 BB now looking at GW35 TC, and GW36 BB?

Duffy is my only Brighton player and I don't have my triple captain chip left so no point in me not bench boosting this week other than to strop.

Deeney to Gray looks the logical option. But also tempted by Long who should get some minutes in the doubles, frees up some funds and can then be my 3rd sub for the rest of the season. Annoying that I won't have 2ft for week 36. Would also consider Llorente but already have 3 Spurs.

I'm the same. I went for KDB rather than Sterling and left 1.8 mil in the band while I weighed up the best Liverpool triple up for GW36. I currently have Robertson and Mane, I could then change Aguero & JWP for Salah and Ings.

However this is one of the best reasons for not booking a transfer when you set your wildcard. I now have 7.7 mil to spend on a replacement. Wilson is an option but every time I've got him in it's not worked out for me. My other option is to bring in Gray and do Aguero to Firmino for GW36.

It’s not just the deeney red card - it’s the thought of playing terrible Brighton players in their double. All of a sudden the bench to be boosted looks dreadful.

Same, struggling to pick a captain, so no chance I'll TC.
BB35 for me, but yes that does mean double Brighton defence and Camarasa as BB players.

That’s the problem - obvious TC options are salah and mane in gw36, but 36 is also now the best time to bench boost (it’s the last time Brighton have a decent game).

      reply fail.
I'll probably get Gray instead of Deeney. Feels like a waste of FT but don't want to completely change my team structure. Did look at playing TC instead of BB, but I don't see a very obvious TC candidate and bench will be even worse in the other GW's with 3 Brighton players just playing one match instead of 2.

Bit of a nightmare! Think I will use it as an opportunity to save cash up front with Long or Success and move to 442 with Laporte in defence. Have no choice but to bench boost next week as I've use my TC already.

Another option is Wilson but don't like his run in. Long or success most likely as they should get a few appearances points and maybe a lucky attacking return next week and then can be benched for the rest of the season.

Deeney to Ings or Gray the most likely transfer for me.

Think im going to stick with BB35 as I think Salah/Mane TC in 36 could score more than using BB in 36.
Also even if I BB36 the Deeney replacement problem will still remain.

Bit frustrating as I had some plans around loading up on Spurs (triple attack including Moura), then Watford, and then Liverpool to take advantage of fixtures against Huddersfield. Losing Deeney means I have to spend my FT just to deal with him, probably for Gray, which makes the other moves hits I wasn't preparing for.

I'm considering a -8 now for Deeney, Eriksen and Sterling to Gray, Deulofeu/Redmond, Salah. Very borderline decision, mostly based on gut feeling about Eriksen and Sterling in the DGW and expecting Salah to go mad at some point with 20-pointer.

Had not gone with Camarasa and money to upgrade, in order to save an FT this week and have two FTs to clear out DGW players I no longer wanted next week! Now I have Deeney, Valery, and a non-starting Bennett on Bench Boost week. Great. Only got 0.5m spare too. So it looks like Gray or a Soton player Long I guess?

    18. Kingsley Royal
      • 7 Years

I'm considering the TC on Jimenez / Aguero rather than a BB in GW35 of Ryan / Duffy / Valery / [Gray]. Not expecting many points from that on a GW35 BB.

Could then BB in GW36 when Brighton have NEW so potentially better points prospects than wol / tot

Added benefit would be saving a FT for GW36 to replace Deeney and bring in another Liverpool player (maybe Firmino) for HUD

If I BB in GW35 then TC will likely be on a single GW 36 or 38 (Liverpool or [United])

Still undecided though. Will be interested to hear the scoutcast discussion on this.

Deeney to Gray. No change in strategy. We should all have strong enough squads to cope with the benchings Gray will likely get when Deeney is back. Will just have to take a -4 in GW36 to get Salah in - pretty small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. Assuming there are no further injuries of course...….!!!
