Manchester United bowed out of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were outclassed for much of the second leg in the Nou Camp, losing 3-0 on the night following their narrow loss in Manchester last week.

Attention now turns back to the race for a Champions League qualification spot which, for those interested in United’s Fantasy assets for the season run-in, can only be a positive regarding rotation and managed game-time.

The Red Devils’ double-header against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City in Gameweeks 37 and 38 certainly appeals, with their participation in European competition now at an end (the Champions League semi-finals are scheduled to take place around those fixtures).

Whether many FPL managers will take a punt on a United asset or two for their upcoming Double Gameweek against Everton and Manchester City is another question, of course, given the calibre of the opposition and their so-so form.

We assess their latest display in the Scout Notes article below.

Barcelona 3-0 Manchester United

Manchester United’s current B-list status in European football was underscored on Tuesday evening as they fell to a 3-0 defeat in the Nou Camp.

There is no disgrace in losing to Barcelona, of course, particularly when Lionel Messi is in full stride.

The Argentinean highlighted the gulf in class between the two teams with a virtuoso display, scoring on two occasions and causing plenty of problems for United’s makeshift, ramshackle defence.

The visitors actually made a bright start before Messi’s two-goal salvo effectively killed the tie after just 20 minutes, with Phillippe Coutinho finishing the scoring with an excellent curling effort in the second half.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) struck the bar with a toe-poke from a fine Paul Pogba (£8.7m) pass before the England striker called Marc-Andre ter Stegen into action with a scuffed effort from distance.

Barcelona had an early spot-kick award overruled after VAR intervention but it was a positive opening quarter of an hour for United, as Solskjaer was keen to stress after the game:

We did well to get here and we could see the difference between the two teams. The quality of finishing was outstanding. We started well for the first 15 minutes and we thought we’ve got something here, and then in four minutes they scored two goals which made it so hard.

The attitude was right. We knew we were fighting against a good team with good players. We know there’s work to do. We’ve said all along that this won’t change overnight and the next few years will be massive to get to the level teams like Barcelona are at.

Messi capitalised on poor play from Ashley Young (£5.7m) to open the scoring on 16 minutes before swiftly doubling Barca’s lead with an effort that squirmed under the body of David de Gea (£5.7m).

Solskjaer backed his under-fire goalkeeper after full-time, saying:

That’s unfortunate with goalkeepers. When you make an error it can get highlighted and that’ll be remembered tonight. But he made some fantastic saves as well, which all in all, his contribution to the team is good but sometimes that happens in football.

From the point of Messi’s opener, United didn’t have another attempt from inside the Barcelona box until substitute Alexis Sanchez‘s (£10.0m) late header drew a superb save out of ter Stegen.

Pogba tested the home goalkeeper from distance while Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) whistled a rising effort over ter Stegen’s bar but attacking forays were few and far between once Messi had put the tie to bed after 20 minutes.

Lingard and Rashford dovetailed between the right flank and a more central position to little effect, while Anthony Martial (£7.2m) was disappointing (and looked borderline disinterested) on the left-hand side of a 4-3-3/4-3-1-2.

Having lined up as part a deep-lying two against West Ham on Saturday, Pogba was back on the left of a central midfield three in Catalonia but had no real impact on the game and both of his shots came from well outside the Barcelona box.

With Luke Shaw (£5.0m) suspended, Young was moved over to left-back with fairly disastrous consequences while Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) shifted across to right-back to allow Phil Jones (£5.1m) and Chris Smalling (£5.6m) to continue their unconvincing partnership at centre-half.

It needs to be stressed that United won’t face a team like Barcelona (or a player like Messi) every week but the Red Devils do face City and Chelsea in the next two Gameweeks and were far from convincing even in recent victories over Southampton, Watford and West Ham.

It is now nine matches without a clean sheet for Solskjaer’s side in all competitions, which will be of interest to owners of Sergio Aguero (£11.7m), Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) et al ahead of the Manchester derby next week.

Whether their European exit can refocus their efforts on the Premier League remains to be seen – if United can swiftly recapture the form they showed in Solskjaer’s honeymoon period, then their final two fixtures of the season will firmly enter Fantasy managers’ thoughts.

The Norwegian said:

We want to play these [Champions League] games again next year, so we have a massive week coming up with Everton, City and Chelsea.

They’re disappointed but there’s no point dwelling on what could have been. It could have been different if we had started better and we got the first goal but now we have to concentrate on next week.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m) may get more of a look-in this weekend after only being thrown on as a late substitute, while Solskjaer welcomed back Sanchez from injury and suggested the Chilean will have a part to play in the final month of 2018/19.

The United boss said:

Alexis has been injured now since the start of March so he’s been out for six weeks. It was important that he got 15 minutes on the pitch and for his mentality as well – he knows his knee is okay. He was close to getting a goal.

Hopefully, he can give us a bit towards the end of the season so we can push to get into the top four.

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Jones, Lindelof, Smalling, Young; McTominay, Fred, Pogba; Lingard (Sanchez 80′), Rashford (Lukaku 73′), Martial (Dalot 65′).

Is it worth doing Eriksen/Deeney > Moura/Kun for a hit to make BB viable again? Would still have to play the 2 Brighton idiots, but hey ho.

GW36: FT Vardy > Firmino to set up the Pool double up with Mane & strikeforce of Kun/Bobby/Jimenez for the rest of the season.

Haha see below, thinking the same essentially, but going for Firmino to solve the GW36 Pool issue one week early. Will wait to see if Spurs get through or not first. If they get knocked out I'd like to keep them.

I definitely think a bigger front 3 is the order of the day now Deeney is no longer an option. Would rather find money to upgrade than scrat around for the likes of Wilson, who I've only had bad experiences with this season.

I think an additional -4 to lose a brighton defender is possibly also worthwhile, will wait and see what happens in CL.

Im looking at Firmino, Llorente or Rashford really, which means downgrading Son or Eriksen. I think one positive is that Pool have great fixtures this week as well as next, so going triple now is still very viable despite them not having a double.

In all likelihood I'll take a -8, and ditch one of my two Brighton defenders also, either for TAA if I don't get Firm, or to a SOU/WAT defender - both of which I expect much better from than Dunk and Duffy.

Wilson rules out a third Liverpool player for me. Unless I take another hit the week after and do the midfield downgrade then. Doesn't seem worthwhile when I wouldn't want to keep wilson for GW37 and 38 anyway, would much rather have Rashford vs HUD and CAR.

The alternative is terrible though. A -4 most likely for Andre Gray or Ings, who would need to be sold the next week anyway. For many of us going more expensive on a Deeney replacement rules out getting a third Liverpool player without a downgrade elsewhere and an extra hit to boot.

Feel like you have more chance of winning out of this transaction by upgrading Deeney than downgrading him.

          Why is it a -4?

Also, if Gray gets his chance and takes it, he'll be safe till GW37 due to Deeney's ban.

Would you be tempted by the following if Spurs qualify tonight?

    Deeney, Eriksen/Son > Firmino, Redmond

Saves me an FT removing whatever other dross I would be forced to get in for Deeney after the DGW if I dont get money from my midfield. Redmond would be rotating 4th/5th mid with Jota in a 343 for the rest of the season - fixtures work out reasonably well for that.

Spurs still in top 4 pursuit and don`t like the idea of dropping Eriksen/Son.

Neither do I, but the alternative is using a transfer now on a striker, none of the options for which I would want to keep after this week. Rashford, Llorente and Firmino i'd consider keeping till the end. Can't get Llorente without selling a spurs mid, dont trust united really (rashford would still require a midfield downgrade anyway) and Firmino solves two problems at once for me, giving me a 3rd Pool player for that HUD game.

A hit for someone like Gray (presuming I also ditch a bha defender), followed by another hit the week after to upgrade him for Firmino has 0% chance of working out IMO.

Yes I think this is a good move

Was a consideration of mine but have decided to just improve for BB this week and not look to rip up the team for another LIV attack (have Salah for TC GW36 anyway) - see below

The deeney RC and triple Brighton defence has really thrown the cat amongst the pigeons, half tempted to keep triple brighton (and not take a hit) and take the punt on BB this GW still, what's to say Brighton will fare any better v New gw36?

    Thoughts?

Could be a good punt. Played RM against Arsenal, just security of starts is an issue.

I would also like some clarity on potential line up in Watford's defence. No Hornet fans on here ATM?

Like you I can see the potential for Feminia attacking points but went with Mariappa as he seemed more nailed on, now I have no idea on his chances of playing, after his blank against Arsenal.

What's the crack with Kabasele...is he back after injury?

Does Gracia regularly rotate defenders or has he a preferred back four?

Cathcart seems the most nailed on

Agreed in principle, but I am stuck with Duffy and Dunk currently (want to do away with double BRI defence), plus need to raise funds for Deeney - > Wilson. So a - 4 with one of the above would serve a dual purpose!

i have hazard and want sterling but just know haz will burn me if i get rid so think we have to just keep hazard and hope he doesnt feature tomorrow and gets a good scoring run out v Burnley, who now have nothing to play for while Chelsea chase 4th.

      Ederson Speroni
      Bednarek Robertson TAA Duffy Dunk
      Hudson Son Pogba Hazard Mane

Hazard v Burnley is a great fixture.

Scrap all the undecipherable posts before. What do you think of this plan (CL result-depending)?

GW35 - Deeney, Duffy > Wilson, Yoshida (-4) and BB this:

    Foster, Lloris
    Robbo, Laporte, Doherty, Yoshida, Valery
    Salah, Eriksen, Son, Jota, JWP
    Kun, Jimi, Wilson

    GW36: Save FT and TC

    Lloris
    Robbo, Laporte, Doherty, Yoshida
    Salah (TC), Eriksen, Son, JWP
    Kun, Wilson
    (Foster) (Jimi, Jota, Valery)

    GW37 - Jimi, Foster > Rashford, sub 4.2 GK (2FT)

Good or no good? Looking at the benches I could also feasibly switch BB/TC between GW35/36

    Thanks!

      I'd go with BB option.
Those transfers look good to me.

Thanks mate - so you think the plan make sense?

Alternative is to hold Duffy for the DGW and do:
        Eriksen, Deeney > Firmino, Deulo/ Douco/ Redmond

And then take out Duffy for GW37

Yeh I know. So that plan for 37 may get scrapped!

What do you think of plan for 35/36 though?

        Alternative is to do:
Deeney, Eriksen > Firmino, Deulo/ Redmond now and hold Duffy until 37 when I will dump

Looks good but any way of squeezing in Mane GW36 for HUD?
Perhaps delay the Jimi >Rashford move until GW38 if it helps.

        I could do:
Same plan for this week, then Eriksen, Foster > Mané, 3.9 in GW36 and then save in GW37 and get Rash in for Jimi for GW38?

Could save the Duffy transfer GW35 and spend the -4 in GW36? Dump Duffy GW37

I need the Duffy ref to afford Wilson. Both GW35 and 36 will be a -4 but all I think are value-add transfers

    Best option for 35:

    A) van Dijk or Robbo
    B) Monreal
    C) Duffy + 4

This could change with injuries tonight but my original WC plan was to save this week's transfer, before downgrading Eriksen and bringing in Firmino for Deeney GW36. Troy messed everything up.

Should I take a one-week punt on a striker, or bring this plan forward early: Deulofeu & Firmino for Eriksen & Deeney?

For different reasons I am thinking the same.
I have Vardy Valery Dunk and Ryan who I don't want. I have Laca ans Alders who I could do without.
I have already moved Kockup and now I wonder about taking 2 hits and preparing for 36.
If Valery fit I could do Dunk to Watford and Vardy to Firmino.

Do we know if Deeney red card has been appealed, if so when would we know the outcome?

    Thanks.

I believe they were planning to appeal it, god knows why as no chance it would be overturned, but I haven't seen an appeal go in yet, so maybe they decided against it.
If they have appealed it will be decided on before the next game.
..but as I say, it won't be overturned. Deeney even gestured to the Arsenal bench on his way off the pitch that he didn't elbow him, he hit him with his forearm, which is still a red card offence.

    Captain who?

    1. Andre Gray
    2. Mane
    3. Hazard
    4. Son
    5. Sterling
    6. VVD or TAA
    7. Jimenez
    8. Wilson

Manchester has been the preserve of Utd for decades. Will take time for City to build up. Give it another 5 successful years and they will be filling up the Etihad IMO.

Does this look ok to BB? 1ft and 0.5itb...

    Foster/Ryan

    Valery - Bednarek - Duffy - Laporte - Robbo

    JWP - Sterling - Son - Jota - Mane

    Vardy - Aguero - Jimenez

Any obvious transfers to make? If not I was going to roll one to have 2ft so I can bring in Salah(tc) in GW36.

I would say Duffy > Cathcart but if you're plan is keep the 1ft for Salah TC then leave for sure.

Yeah I am. JWP & Aguero for Salah & Quaner.
That would give me Robertson, Mane, Son, Erikson, KDB, Jimenez & (Deeney Replacement TBC)

I think Liverpool will see that as a chance to claw back the goal difference, could be a bloodbath.

You would have thought so. The only question is which 3 to have. Mane and Robertson are definates. You could easily make a case for Salah (funds permitting), Firmino, VvD or TAA.

Is there anyone going with Shane Long as a BB enabler?

To my mind getting him with limited expectations and boosting a Brighton defender to a premium defender can rebalance a team a bit better, especially if it helps you with the Salah conundrum.

Salah and Mane will both start against huds, imo. But if its a walkover, they may be subbed earlier than usual.
