Captains

Liverpool options dominate Gameweek 36 captaincy in spite of Salah’s USA trip

Liverpool players are going to be the most popular in the Gameweek 36 captain poll.

After witnessing Manchester City reclaim the Premier League top spot outright on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp’s men will almost certainly be at their best when Huddersfield come to Anfield on Friday night.

However, selecting the right Liverpool player may take some work ahead of the Gameweek 36 deadline.

Sadio Mané (£10.0m) has already taken an early lead in our latest captain poll, which you can vote in below or on the sidebar of our website.

The Senegalese international has 10 goals in his last 10 Premier League home matches, making him the most reliable in terms of form in front of his own fans.

However, Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) may give Mané a run for his money given his impressive performance in his last Anfield match, against Chelsea in Gameweek 34.

The Egyptian’s spectacular strike in that game marked the first time since Gameweek 23 that he had scored in back-to-back Premier League games.

Salah also picked up an assist for James Milner‘s (£5.6m) penalty against Cardiff and has won more spot kicks in the league for Liverpool than any of his colleagues this season.

There may be some reticence from his owners to captain him though, after he spent some time in New York this week.

Salah was recently named one of the world’s most influential people by Time Magazine and was in the USA to attend the prestigious Time 100 Gala.

He has reportedly returned to the UK now but his travels (to a different time zone) could affect how much faith Fantasy managers are willing to place in him for Gameweek 36.

There are a number of options worth considering in Liverpool’s defence too.

Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.6m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.6m) could all benefit from the fact that Huddersfield remain the division’s lowest scorers and Liverpool have more clean sheets than any other side.

While Barcelona await Liverpool next week, the fact that they are playing Huddersfield on Friday night should ease concern over rotation.

Outside of the Reds, it is hard to truly find much inspiration for a differential captain, such is the quality of Liverpool’s fixture.

Manchester City are the only team whose form is comparable as they travel to Burnley but backing Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) or Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) may still be seen as a risk.

The two players combine for just five attacking returns in their last four away matches, each player blanking twice in that run.

That said, Burnley look safe from the drop this season and have little to play for, so there’s every reason that Manchester City could record a heavy win, especially with no Champions League to consider any more.

Spurs, on the other hand, do have to concern themselves with European competition still, which could affect how they line-up against West Ham on Saturday lunch-time.

Son Heung-min (£8.8m) is banned from the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Ajax so he should feature, and is probably the most likely to succeed out of his colleagues.

West Ham have one of the worst defences in the league over the last six Gameweeks, so there should be plenty of chances for Spurs.

Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) has been a key player for them in that time but he could be finally handed a rest ahead of midweek after starting every league game since Gameweek 18.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) remains in the picture as a differential captain too after he extended his scoring run to eight goals in as many league matches in Double Gameweek 35.

This weekend he faces an Arsenal side that continues to struggle away from home, most recently outperformed by Wolves in a 3-1 defeat at Molineux.

After City's result I think it's more likely he now does rotate a bit. They're now only 3/1 to win the league and realistically have the same chance of winning the CL.

It def won't be mass rotation but I imagine Salah will be benched and Gomez to play CB for Matip (so that he can play RB potentially vs Barca) - maybe some midfield rotation too but other than that full strength.

I can't see this happening at all. There are no signs of fatigue, everything to play for... the only reason would be that they estimate huddersfield to be such a non-threat they can coast without their best players.

        I'm a non-Salah owner. I hope he doesn't play. But it's not gonna happen.

        never had him

no easy way of bring him in without doing one of the following moves:

        aguero + jota > salah + dcl/barnes/llorente (-4)

        OR

        aguero + eriksen > salah + zaha (-4)

currently don't like either, just seems a one week move akin to the kane frenzy when he had cardiff at home

Only a 25 point lead in ML.

    Ryan (Foster)

    Robbo Duffy Doherty (Val Bed)

    Sterling Mane Erik Son Deu

    Kun Jim (Gray)

Any advice on holding the lead n plans this week? Rival doesn't have Salah but I'd have to take hit to get him in. Also I've not been impressed with Kun recently but don't have the nuts to get rid. Surprised there's not been much discussion on his form here unless I've missed it.

    A. Aguero, Jota ----- Salah, 4.6m( bench) -4
    B. Etiksen, Tripier, Jota---- Salah, 4.3, 3.9m (bench) -8

    Ryan, Gunn
    Taa, Tripier, Doherty, Yoshida, Valery
    Mane, Sterling, Son, Eriksen, Jota
    Aguero, Wilson, Jiminez

Main rivals have no Aguero but have Eriksen so A. Sounds better but rly dont want to lose Aguero, pls help.

If there wasn't doubt over Salah, I think I'd be getting rid of Kun to fit Salah in my team. I guess the other problem is who for though - obviously if it's to get Salah I need a cheaper option and nobody really appeals that much to me. Zaha/Mitrovic/DCL... all options I'm considering but not sold on.

When voting on the captain poll, do you:

    a) vote for the person you will captain
    b) vote for the best captaincy option

Even as a current Mane owner and Salah non-owner, there is no way I could possibly tell you that Mane is a better captaincy option than Mo Salah this week.

It says ‘best captain for GW__’

That’s how I take it. I also feel that’s the way the poll would be optimised.

Although looking at the results, and I struggle to believe people do.

I imagine most here played our chips the same way. In doing so they own Mane over Salah as he was cheaper and enabled funds to be used on DGW assets.

        Agreed.

There could be two polls. One to determine who is the best option to choose (which I believe is the purpose of this one) and a second to determine who we are going to captain (which could also serve useful to get an idea of %s and play on EO etc).

      Tough call.
Dunk if you think Brighton will build flock seagulls in formation which are difficult to break down even for the flying Magpies,

Yosidha if you think Bournemouth are really on the beach at this stage and Southampton's form continues.

I've never owned a Cardiff player and never played a Fulham player.

    Who have you avoided?

Laca to Bobby looks like a nice move.

Maverick move would be to stick the armband on him too

    FINALLY a good game week!!!

How did all your bench boost go? Being realistic with the players that you would have actually benched?

For me it was 2 blanks in Hojberg and Bebna and then 2 decent scores in Ryan and Duffy to get 26points.

Really well here - Ryan, TAA, Vardy & Valery

Though I’m not sure if I’d have played Wilson or Vardy if I didn’t have BB

I got 28 on BB by some miracle

      Foster (5) - Gray (11) - Valery (1) - Jota (11).

I will take that considering it looked like a waste for a long time.

    1.5M itb, no Lpool atm

    Pogba or Eriksen -> Mane?

Thinking Pog, but ideally wanted to keep him for good fixtures in GW37&38. Also wary of Erik being rested for Ajax

Don't understand the panic around Salah, he would have had the clubs permission to take the trip, it's not like he disappeared and went on a week long bender at Blackpool pleasure beach.
