Scout Notes

How the final day of the season unfolded from a Fantasy perspective

Our final Scout Notes article of the season is a briefer-than-usual affair, recapping the events of Gameweek 38.

Despite all the interest in Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) and Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), it was the lesser-owned Fantasy assets who won the league for Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) and David Silva (£8.5m) proved to be the heroes as they were the only options to record more than one attacking return.

The former Leicester City midfielder scored the goal to put the title out of Liverpool’s reach, 25 minutes after his corner was nodded in by Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m).

That strike was welcomed by the owners of the centre-back and helped compensate for a lack of a clean sheet.

Despite their incredible record of ten shut-outs in the last 12 matches and Brighton’s struggles in front of goal, it was the Seagulls who actually took the lead at the Amex.

Glenn Murray (£6.1m) was the man to break the deadlock, converting Pascal Groß‘s (£6.7m) corner after 26 minutes.

It mattered little to City in the end though, with Aguero netting an immediate equaliser and setting Pep Guardiola’s side on their way to winning a second successive title.

City’s win meant that the result at Anfield was irrelevant to the outcome of the Premier League title race.

Owners of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.8m) and Sadio Mane (£10.3m) had a field day, though, with both Liverpool players delivering 15-points hauls.

Mane converted two Alexander-Arnold crosses either side of half-time and Liverpool went on to record their 21st clean sheet of the season – no Premier League club registered more.

Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), passed fit to start along with Andrew Robertson (£6.7m), blanked for the first time in seven Gameweeks and never really looked like scoring, despite his obvious desperation to secure a second successive Golden Boot award.

Talking of disappointments, Manchester United signed off for the season in inglorious fashion, slumping to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of relegated Cardiff City.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£4.8m) was the unlikely hero, first converting from the penalty spot after himself being felled and then tapping in from a Josh Murphy (£4.8m) pass.

Paul Pogba (£8.6m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) blanked again, while Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) was unable to deliver an attacking return on his full debut despite 15 penalty box touches and seven attempts on goal – two of which were big chances.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) wasn’t part of the matchday squad.

The real humdinger of the day, as perhaps anticipated, was at Selhurst Park.

There were a grand total of eight goals scored between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth and naturally, despite posting really encouraging underlying statistics in the previous four away matches, Callum Wilson (£6.9m) was not involved in a single one.

Neither was Ryan Fraser (£6.3m), who seems to only ever deliver when his colleague Wilson does.

The real winners of that match were owners of Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), who recorded three assists and was a constant menace throughout.

His haul was accompanied by a Michy Batshuayi (£6.2m) brace, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m), despite conceding three times, notched a rare assist.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) clawed his way to a shared Golden Boot award with two goals at Burnley and finished as the top-scoring FPL forward of 2018/19 in doing so.

The Gabonese striker was the lucky winner of Unai Emery’s rotation roulette as the Arsenal manager shuffled the pack after European commitments – Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) and Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m) among the players to drop to the bench.

Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) relieved the glory days of the winter period with one last goal of the season to ensure the Gunners’ defensive record on the road finished in true form.

There was a rare goal for youngster Eddie Nketiah (£5.0m) in the closing stages.

Arsenal’s north London rivals drew 2-2 with Everton, with those who hung onto Christian Eriksen (£9.2m) rewarded when the Dane scored the game’s fourth goal from a direct free-kick.

Several lesser-owned Fantasy assets were among the points, with Theo Walcott (£5.9m) and Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) – in for the injured Richarlison (£6.4m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) – on the scoresheet for the Toffees.

Erik Lamela (£5.9m) claimed the assists for both of Spurs’ goals, the first of which was an Eric Dier (£4.7m) strike on two minutes.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) signed off for 2018/19 with an assist for Walcott’s goal, with this campaign being the Iceland international’s most successful season from an FPL points’ perspective.

There wasn’t to be a ninth clean sheet in 11 Gameweeks for Marco Silva’s defence, however, while Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) was absent through injury.

Perhaps the most underwhelming spectacle of the afternoon took place at the King Power Stadium.

It was the only match in Gameweek 38 to feature no goals, despite Jamie Vardy‘s (£9.0m) impressive form in recent home fixtures.

There had been suggestions that Chelsea would look sluggish after playing 120 minutes and needing penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night, but they were arguably the more creative team in the opening stages.

Eden Hazard (£11.0m) was left on the bench and emerged for a short display in the second half in which he contributed little.

Vardy had a few opportunities to score but could not convert and was at the very least more composed than Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.0m), who was off target with several clear chances.

An error from the recalled Angus Gunn (£4.3m) cost owners of Southampton’s backline a clean sheet, with Alex Pritchard (£4.8m) pouncing on the Saints’ goalkeeper’s loose touch to hand Huddersfield a deserved point.

Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) had earlier put the hosts ahead with a fine effort from distance – that, indeed, was his only shot of the game.

James Ward-Prowse (£5.1m) was inches from an eighth goal of the season but his 46th-minute effort was tipped onto the bar.

Newcastle made a mockery of the interest in Sergio Rico (£4.4m) at Craven Cottage as they dominated Fulham.

Two quick-fire goals for the Magpies in the first half put it beyond the Cottagers and Scott Parker’s side never really threatened Martin Dubravka‘s (£5.0m) goal, with Ryan Babel (£5.6m) only coming on as a 65th-minute substitute.

Mid-price FPL forwards Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) and Salomon Rondon (£5.9m) each bagged a goal.

The feared pre-FA Cup final rotation didn’t materialise at Vicarage Road, with Javi Gracia naming a full-strength side for the match against West Ham.

He might have wished he didn’t, as the Hornets slumped to a 4-1 defeat and saw Jose Holebas (£4.8m) shown a straight red card early in the second half.

Gerard Deulofeu (£5.7m) at least rewarded his remaining owners with a consolation goal.

Watford haven’t kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 26 and their vulnerability at the back showed, with Mark Noble (£4.8m) grabbing a brace – one goal coming from the spot – and Marko Arnautovic (£6.7m) registering his fourth attacking return in three Gameweeks.

Michail Antonio (£6.8m) delivered a hat-trick of assists while Felipe Anderson (£6.8m) recovered from illness to record what was only his fourth attacking return of 2019.

Whatever you do, please please do not waste time on rotation spreadsheet.(defence)

It's is utter nonsense and a complete waste of time.

we were spoiled this year with attacking options (Robertson/TAA/Mendy/Doherty), and also had a £4m starter, so there was never any real need to, it might not be so easy next season

so, you're honestly saying that there is no relation between fixture difficulty and points? I get that attacking returns can be unpredictable, and that some teams do well in big games (Wolves/Leicester) some play better away (Palace), which both make it harder

No we are not saying that, what we are saying is that people(me included) have spend hours(days) plotting out a 19 weeks 4.5m def rotation spreadheet, only for it to come crashing down around week 3-4 when the likes of Laporte & Co have suddenly kept 3 CS's in a row and the likes of Kosielney have scored 2 goals for example.

By then unexpected gems like Wolves def's etc have raised their hands and we all tear up our teams and WC anyway.

I think this season has been exceptional in that sense though, we're very unlikely to have another £4m like AWB (who also made a mockery of rotation through great away form), and there will be a few interesting £4.5's again (Valery/Evans/a re-classified Maitland Niles(?))

            1. Christina.

no matter who the 4.5m gems are, we will most likely pick the wrong ones in any case to start off with. No one keeps their 4.5m def rotation pairs for long anyway.

Wan bisakka was a gem yes, but many lost pts because of benching him. (12 pts week 1)

I was lucky to start off with Holebas this season. He was racking up the pts. Then I bench him for an away game(as per rotation)..he scored something like 11 pts, then his leg falls off and he was never the same again.

                Week 1:Tomkins(6) , WanB(12) - both away games
                Week 2: Cook(14) - away

You're right saying there may be good value in some 4.5m assets, but not purely for rotation schedules and clean sheets.

Don't think it's a case of: avoid 4.5m defenders. More so that many (myself included) place too much emphasis on building these rotation schedules for them to flop, as the defences they invested in are no good (despite decent fixtures).

Couldn't have explained it better myself, thank you for typing for me, haha!

Already I'm looking at starting with TAA, Digne & Boly so I don't jump on the rotation hype when fixtures are released.

              This.

I think Digne, Trent and Laporte pretty much are fixture proof, so you can play them every week with 2 cheapies to stay on the bench in case of an emergency.

Laporte is another good pick although I'm conscious of overspending on defence.

He always does look great in highlights. Somehow both in real life and fantasy the returns never quite reach the promised land.

He could be a real monster as a player - he’s still young enough to find another level.

But that I suspect means leaving palace and then he may become Mahrez.

There was talk that Dortmund were interested in him. Rubbish news for Palace fans, bad for fantasy but perhaps what he needs to hit the heights.

        This, really.

They are dead lucky Cardiff had a bad start because that's the only reason they're not starting next season in the Championship.

Based on the way they finished this campaign I'd have said they were odds on favourites to go down next term. Even with Norwich and Sheff Utd coming up.

that was big message to Sane from Pep on final day of the season when he went with Mahrez, i can see Sane looking to leave, something definitely off in their relationship.I think he's got the talent to be even better than sterling but just doesn't seem to be able to do what Pep wants him to.

No joke, does anyone expect him still to be in post by Christmas if United aren't basically challenging for the title by that point? I'm not trolling or being difficult but just realistic. 7m isn't an awful lot to a club of that size. If they can get Pochettino or similar by then they would write OGS off as a bad debt and move on.

If OGS fails miserably, 7×3m contract is peanuts for United to pay off.

Sorry - misread. 3x7 of course... but still! They will have all sorts of clauses in there to minimise their losses. It won't be the full amount.

He probably has a "contract voided if you lose 2-0 to Cardiff at home" clause in there.

I just mean that they will be desperate to get rid, so anything other than an amazing start to the season will give them just the right excuse. I don't think for a moment that they will be challenging for the title at any stage of the season.

hindsight is great but why in the f *** did they not wait until may 12 to assess his position? its one of the strangest appointments in terms of timing in recent memory, maybe ever. new manager bounce (granted they were more attacking) against poor opposition and a fortunate victory over PSG.

Spare a thought for the guy who finished last in FPL https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/5832108/event/38

Seems like he put in more physical effort than anyone else, to make as many transfers as possible 🙂

Poor show. He didn’t come last despite the effort

He was 6,296,699 out of 6,324,237

Is there even a wooden spoon prize to justify this insanity?!

Hope Brighton go down next season with their new random foreign manager nobody has heard of.. What do they expect?! Survival and an FA Cup semi final not enough?! Reality check needed for some lunatics running clubs.

You know, I actually don't think it's the worst manager related decision we've seen in recent times.
The club seem to have acted appropriately, waiting until the end of the season rather than a knee jerk reaction.
Brighton have been pretty poor this season, and last season too, to be fair.
They are an established PL team now, good stadium and decent supporter turn out, if they want to progress I don't think Chris Hughton was the man to do it.
To clarify progress - mid table safety, ala Bournemouth, Palace levels with games to spare, rather than being in a relegation battle every season.

Is it a settled club though ??
We can only judge it after next manager performance right ??

It'll be clear whether CH was underperforming or Brighton isn't a good team at all & he helped them to survival & PL status again.

Been an established PL club for 4 years at least now, that's enough to have regular TV revenue, and gate receipts to make the next step, not like how Fulham just gambled all their promotion money on a few players.

Again, that Brighton team is his team, so regardless of whether or not they're under performing, it's his players who are doing it.

I can see that point of view. Maybe he got to the natural end of his progression, but clubs have to be careful what they wish for. Could easily backfire here. Best case scenario for them what happens? 12th maybe? He made some decent buys on paper, they just didn’t come through for him. Still thinks a bit harsh to say the least.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with that point, natural end of his progression. And it's exactly what I'm saying, he deserves enormous credit for how he's transformed the club, as you noted yourself, heading to League One when he took over, and the club statement sounded very genuine that they're thankful for all that he's done.
But is he the man to take the club forward, personally I think he's reacted his limit.

        I agree with you.

I couldn't see Brighton lasting another season based on the last month's worth of evidence.

If I'm their owner looking at the very real prospect of losing their Prem status next season I'd be looking to take some form of drastic action too.

Yep, it's what I'm saying, I mean they've not even reacted 40 points this season, most seasons that's not good enough.
It'll be difficult next year for Norwich, and Sheffield Utd, but honestly without a change at Brighton I think most people would tip them for bottom three.

    Completely Off Topic

Has anyone ever went to watch a game in Germany?

Myself and 3 mates are planning a lads weekend in November. Heading to Dusseldorf and hoping to catch a game either there, Cologne, Leverkusen or Dortmund at a push. Surely one of them will be at home.

I was just wondering how you go about getting tickets for the games? Or do they operate a pay on entry system etc.

    Any tips would be great!

I saw Hannover vs Mainz a few years ago, when I was in Germany for work.
Basically just went to a ticket booth outside and brought some tickets, pretty straight forward.
You can buy beer in the stadium, but you needed some kind of coupons to do so, I guess it was a proof of age thing, so maybe look into that. Although we still got served anyway somehow.

Go to a club shop in the city centre. They usually sell tickets there too. When I was in Germany last the ticket also included travel to and from the stadium

After guessing who would you pick for your team next season try to think who are you definitely going to avoid (taking account possible price change.)

I will avoid Walcott & prob B.Silva and Willian, B.Silva playing really well but just can't get enough points - his price is prob going to be 8.0 or 8.5 next season

    Modern football rubbish strikes again.

Chris Hughton, gets a club up with 10,000 fans. Turns them into a 30,000 (plastic fan) filled Premier League team for 2 seasons, gets to the FA cup semi final too.

Spent a bit of money yes, but not much.

Where do BHA think they should be? Bournemouth aside (no offence to Bournemouth who have been amazing(, who would be a 'smaller' club above them?

      • 5 Years

Not much money? I think only 5/6 teams have spent more in the last 2 seasons.

I think this goes under the radar as so few of their new players make it out onto the pitch consistently- people just forget about them. Also he’s bought quantity - pretty much a whole new squad - as opposed to marquee signings.

In game week 24 there was some speculation about how low you could be in the final GW24 standings and yet still have a chance of winning the FPL title. I said that I would do a quick analysis of the top (50) positions at the end of the season and report the results.

Of the top 50 managers at the end of GW38:-
3 managers were in the top 10 at the end of GW24
13 managers were in positions from 11 to 100 the end of GW24
21 managers were in positions from 101 to 1000 the end of GW24
12 managers were in positions from 1001 to 10000 the end of GW24
Only 1 manager was outside the top 10000 the end of GW24. He was in position 13899.

It is the extraordinary performance of this last team, Jack March’s “Shark Team”, that I will use for my final calculations. Jack scored an amazing 1082 points in the last 14 game weeks, at an average of 77.29 points per week. He went from overall rank 13899 to 9! However, assuming that he would need this 14 game week haul of 1082 to overtake everyone, he would have needed to be on 1578 points after GW24 to finish ahead of the eventual winning #1 team of Adam Levy. 1578 points after GW24 would have put a manager in around the #250 position.
So, in conclusion, if you were outside the top 250 after GW24 had finished then I would say that you would have had an extremely small chance of winning the overall FPL title.

Very interesting, thanks. I think people forget that a lot of the hope that comes from thinking that you can claw back ranking works both ways - you could always do even worse, or do well but be overtaken by people around you who do even better.

    3 happy with your season?

For the second year running the chips have also been a bit disappointing, tc aguero gw 32 could have been such a success story though. anyway have a good summer all and speak in August for new rmt posts 🙂 and thanks for all your help during the season !!!

Happy with the end of the season run. Was 720k in gw 27.
But very unhappy with 2 main down falls of my second:
      1. Going with Sane Sterling instead of Salah Son in Christmas. Lost at least 50 points there.
      2. Hazard to Sane TC in gw 25 instead of Auba to Kun. 100 points swing in 3 gw's 25-27.
Hopefully next season I'll start well as I'd join from gw 1 unlike of gw 5/6 this season. My first season of serious effort in fpl. So, I'm expecting much better next season 🙂

Review point. FA cup success and bottom 14 clubs.

Brighton only started to bomb once their cup run too hold. They looked comfortable around week 27. Anyone go all in on defence? Would Hughton now be in a job if they had gone out to Millwall?

The other one is Watford. They were in the 7tg place shake up but finished a point ahead of Palace. There were more fantasy returns there but still I suspect falling assets.
