Is Richarlison or Gylfi Sigurdsson better FPL value at £8.0m?

The release of the Fantasy Premier League price list has seen Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson both priced up as £8.0m midfielders.

Everton sit top of our Season Ticker for the first ten Gameweeks of the season and are the only Premier League side to avoid a ‘big six’ club in their opening half-dozen matches, so interest in the Toffees’ Fantasy assets will be keen.

Both Richarlison and Sigurdsson scored 13 top-flight goals last season and recorded their best-ever FPL points hauls.

Given that the Everton midfield duo can’t be separated by price, we will run a direct statistical comparison in the Members’ article below to weigh up the pros and cons of each asset.

As well as the usual goal threat and creativity comparisons, we’ll be assessing their record against ‘lesser’ sides (given Everton’s favourable run at the start of 2019/20) using our new Flat-Track Bully tool.

I'm looking at two cheap 4.5 def rotation for my last starting 11 spot in my team, has anyone looked at a rotation or looking at taking a similar approach?

I'm currently landing on West Ham, Villa and Bournemouth. Targett interests me now signed for Villa fur I feel they could be another Fulham with a mass over-haul of their squad. Has Fredericks gone above Zabelta in the pecking order?

This is probably a good reason for Burnley 4.5 and whoever they rotate with is a good idea as it’ll be a seamless switch to Gibson at 4.0 if Sean Dyche makes our dreams come true.

Targett and Fredericks the best for me. Fredericks is the most nailed WHU full back, but Masuaku is likely to remain first choice this season too

  2. Is Lucas Digne an FPL dream?

Hi all, now that the game has been released and interest among the FPL community at its peak, I’ll be releasing a series of articles trying to answer some of the most popular dilemmas which FPL managers are facing. As a long time admirer of statistical analysis, I will be basing my research on previous underlying data - corroborating that data with the FPL player prices, player pedigree and the fixtures based on the season ticker. Today, I have penned my thoughts on the curious case of Lucas Digne, who has been intriguingly priced at £6m.

Statistically, some of the numbers that Digne posted last season have been nothing short of staggering. Before I was writing this article, I expected his numbers to be impressive but upon further investigation I was amazed to find that they would be this monstrous. Last season, Digne created 71 chances which was the most of all defenders. This was 21 more than the 2nd placed Robertson - all the more impressive given that Digne managed to do so despite not featuring in August at all. Furthermore, out of the midfielders and forwards, only Fraser, Salah, David Silva and Hazard managed to surpass Digne’s total of 13 big chances created last season.

To put these numbers into context, I compared Digne’s stats with the defenders of the yesteryears. The key finding is that Digne’s tally of 71 chances created last season is the highest ever registered by a defender, as per OPTA. Compare this to the highest tallies of defenders for the previous seasons and it is evident what a force of nature Digne has been (2017/18 Ben Davies 46, 2016/17 Cedric 33, 2015/16 Moreno 34, 2014/15 Trippier 44, 2013/14 Baines 27). This glaring disparity also further strengthens the notion that the winds in FPL are changing, perhaps it’s time to abandon the age-old strategy of a rigid team structure for a new approach where we invest more in defence? Do not get conned by the hefty price tag, for there is no defender in the history of the game who has produced such numbers before.

With the sheer volume of chances created, it comes as no surprise that Digne had the most favorable baps per minute ratio over the season as compared to his peers (Digne:6.2/min, Pickford:6.3/min, Keane:6.7/min, Zouma:7/min, Coleman: 7.3/min). In simple words, what this indicates is that even if Digne is unable to register attacking returns in a particular game, FPL is likely to award him with bonus points for the chances he creates whenever Everton are to keep a clean sheet – which is why I think he is well worth the premium over his counterparts. Fixtures for Everton are as good as they come. With the exception of Man City and Spurs, 11 out of the first 13 fixtures look good on paper for returns (cry WAT avl WOL bou SHU bur WHU bha sou NOR). What breeds further confidence in FPL managers is the strong end to Everton’s season (8 clean sheets in the last 11 fixtures), which is also supported by the underlying statistics. In the second half of the season (sample size GW 23:38), only the juggernauts that were Liverpool and Man City bettered Everton for big chances conceded, shots in the box conceded and expected goals conceded. It’s also worth mentioning Digne has some decent goal threat too. His goals from direct free kicks against Burnley and Watford certainly show that he can strike them well from range. This makes him a three-dimensional explosive asset.

This brings me to the end of my article. TLDR: At £6m, investing in Digne is a low risk strategy, given his freakish numbers, Everton’s new found defensive resurgence and their kind opening fixtures.

      Lovely stuff

Even before the prices were released Digne was conditionally one of the first names on my teamsheet (that condition being Gueye staying) & I expected 6.0 so wasn’t at all put off by his price

When I saw Coleman outscoring a player of that quality in 2019, and from less games, it hints that we have something special on our hands with the current crop of Merseyside fullbacks from an FPL perespective

The easiest of easy double ups for me personally 🙂

(Just don’t go anywhere Mr. Gueye!!)

Yeah Gueye is Mr. Everton from a defensive perspective, so much so that I’d be hesitant even on Digne without him there....

Check out their defensive record with & without him - I think 13 conceded in the last 5 games he missed (!)

Zouma & Gomes both get touted as important to everton, and they are very good players, but Everton actually managed ok when they missed games (4 CS in 6 that Zouma missed... nearly 5 CS in 6 only for Origi’s bizarre winner at anfield in the Derby)

Nirvana scenario is they start Schneiderlin & Gueye in the double pivot - some very impressive cleansheet records in those games, and it totally plays to Digne/Coleman’s strengths turning them both into fully fledged FPL beasts

Thanks for the supporting analysis. I'll look into it as well. I also think Marco Silva's history of being an all out attack manager also clouds our judgement sometimes, credit to him for sorting out the defence from the shambles it looked early on in the season.

      A) yet.. His ppm is only 4.5? Maybe because the striker is DCL? Not clinical enough...

      B) Yesterday, article said that Coleman is better.. Then.. Here it comes, Digne's montrous big chances created... Well, it only worth if that can be translate to higher points. At least 5.5 PPM , same as Laporte... If not, premium place is already full. TAA, Robbo, Zinch / Mendy, VVD and Laporte. Already 5 without counting Coleman and Digne !

        A) No midfielder or forward in the Everton team had a conversion rate of over 15%, which is relatively low. DCL had a conversion rate of 12%, Tosun 8%, which tells a story in itself!

        B) I think for me personally it's more about the potential that he offers for next season, rather than historical points. Fair point, Coleman might have outscored him in the second half of the season but I don't expect that trend to continue - particularly if they sign a prolific forward who starts to convert Digne's potential assists into goals 🙂

Always planned to get Digne in before the prices were released no matter what. I thought he would be 5.5m or 6m, and in a weird way I’m glad he is 6m as he then loses a fair amount of owners who don’t want to pay that premium for an Everton defender.

        Thank you Virg.

Firstly, I'd like to point out this is an article primarily on Digne as a standalone option rather than Digne vs Coleman + £0.5m as per se. Secondly, I've read that article and personally I find a couple of loopholes in it. It takes into account a very selected sample size for GW's (for defenders I think the more representative sample size should be the whole season especially as there was no change in system). Further, it uses the xG model to illustrate Coleman's far superior goal threat which doesn't take into account Digne's threat from direct free kicks. I made the mistake of ignoring Maddison and opting for Barnes based on that model last year, so I'm once bitten twice shy... 😉

I completely agree about your critique of the members article. Looking at the whole season produced very different results and I refused to switch out Digne for Coleman and save 0.5 in my FPL team.

Excellent point about Digne's free kicks and xG. Those free kick worldies of his have a very low xG but Digne has proven he can score them.

Tempting but still not convinced. 6.0 is a lot. His -1 followed by a -2 last season still hurt.

Also, not possible to afford Digne if I want Kane, Vardy, one of Salah/Mané, Siggy, TAA, VVD and one City attacker.

A high number of chances created doesnt necessarily lead to a high number of assists. Quality is better than quantity when it comes to assists, I seem to remember a player a few seasons ago who the guys on here were raving about due to chances created but what they didn't realise is the chances were created from corners and crosses which can have notoriously low conversion rates (which may partially explain the eve forwards low conversion rates).

Yep absolutely agree with that. But as mentioned above, Digne's big chances created are right up there too, and because he creates so many chances that also helps his baseline bps.

Here is some key stats to compare McGinn and El Ghazi
      Championship :

      Mc Ginn:
      Shots per game: 2.5
      Key passes : 1.8
      Successful dribbles : 1.9

      El Ghazi:
      Shots per game: 1.9
      Key passes: 1.3
      Successful dribbles: 1.2

Clearly Mc Ginn has bettered El Ghazi in every stat.
      I am going with him.

Aye, we fell lucky to have Lewis, tbh. Could become NI's best player in time. Looks really settled. Think he has a little to learn defensively, but going forward he is superb. He's really fit individual, too...

I will treat you to the best draft you’ve seen so far since release.

    Pope (SOU)

TAA (NOR) VVD (NOR) Laporte (whu) Coleman (cry) Digne (cry)

Salah (NOR) KDB (whu) Siggy (cry)

    King (SHU) Vardy (WOL)

    Ryan Jorginho Dendoncker Greenwood

    You’re welcome

      Love a good back 5 🙂

      I’d prefer Sterling & a 6.0 with a Jorginho downgrade to KDB & Siggy

My hesitance with Siggy is that Digne has DFK’s & Corners + Siggy has missed 4 of his 7 pens in the last year... but equally he could smash it

KDB - I want to be a couple of games late for him rather than early... those knee issues surely mean Pep treats him with kid gloves for a while... but again he could do very well & looks great value when he’s fully fit

      1. Ask Yourself
        • 7 Years

Sterling and yarmolenko is alternative thing I have my eye on. I too am currently unconvinced by Siggy but there is a lot to said for him. Siggy and Digne share the duties and I want every bit of that.

But as it stands KDB looked world class at the end of last season, the best i’ve Ever seen him.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

I saw Yarmolenko at 6.0 all right, very intruiging, but he has his own fitness issues I think...

Personally I reckon at 6.0 its JWP (94 points from sub 2000 minutes, great long range shot, set pieces, and now nailed) Ings (great when fit, but rarely fit) or CHO (could be the new Raheem Sterling of FPL at that price, but injured for gw1 apparently)

Which games in particular stood out for you with KDB? The guy is an absolute superstar - but his knees issues were starting to get seriously disturbing - I hope it’s solved now & not something chronic he’ll have to manage through for the rest of his career

          1. Ask Yourself
            • 7 Years

Fair point. His fitness has generally been good it was just a bad bad injury. He was “fit” for the end of the season but pellegrini deemed it more important for him to recover fully to play a big role this season.

Can never get excited about JWP or CHO. Good players but their GI isn’t great for FPL.

Just every time I saw him play he is intellectually miles ahead of anyone he plays against. His through balls, free kicks, trickery on the edge of the box and shooting made me think he is now the complete package.

            https://youtu.be/pm0TFUndj8Q
This goal and the one he did with his left foot in particular stand out to me

Looks good. But I'm pretty settled on starting with Aguero from the off. Also not keen on Coleman. He's getting on and isn't the player he was. Although he has historically had a good start to FPL in previous seasons...!

Why is there a lack of takers for Aguero and Kane this off season. Consistently 20 goals a season and on pens in this new VAR world

also surprised to see so few teams with Raheeem

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

It’s just hard for strikers the last few years to keep pace with the attacking mids - they’re handicapped quite significantly by the scoring system

Salah, Sterling, Mané Hazard... they’ve all been getting +1 per goal, and a 20 point per season boost from cleansheets - strikers haven’t been able to compete with that the last 3 seasons - maybe this is the year they do?

Salah & Sterling from the off for me anyways.

Vardy interests me a lot more than Kane, Kun & Auba

Pointed this out a few times. Interesting to me anyway

Up to GW22 when Auba was nailed and Kane injury free there was zero difference in their returns and Sterling. All 3 came in within a point of 133. Tge only distinction was Sterling was rotated twice in that time - but that’s the deal with him.

I’m thinking Sterling and Kane are now in diametrically different positions in value when you look at last season.

Thoughts on this bunch, playing around with structure to find the right balance. I really want Siggy so present two options

    A) Settled starting 11
    Ederson (Button)
    TAA VVD Coleman Digne (Gibson)
    Salah Sterling Maddison Zaha (Dendonker)
    King Arnie (Wickham)

    B) Rotate 4.5 def team

    King Arnie (Wickham)

Considering there are 2 to 3 mids who'll start and get 2 ppg at base price ie 4.5 million.. 0 defenders at base price ie 4 million and 0 forwards at base price ie 4.5 million I'm considering going with a 5 3 2 / 4 3 3 at the start atleast. Are there any potentially straying 4.0 defenders that I may have missed? Rico?

id go for a 4.5 mid over jorginho, and use the 1.5 to upgrade defence
also think about captains - Mane/Kane how does that look fixture wise?

Will swap Jorg out, not too worried about captain picks now, that will be up to the form of the player for me anyway.

Ghost team (no transfers allowed restriction)

    Ryan/Button
    TAA VVD Digne Walker Dunk

    Arnie Jota King

Arnie is risky if you can't transfer him in/out given his injury/disciplinary record.

I agree injury is always a factor but his disciplinary record? He played a fraction under 2000 minutes last season and got 3 yellow cards!

risky - but have to balance between maximising potential and putting out an 11 every week.
its actually a much more interesting thought experiment than picking a real FPL team which basically only has to be good for the first 4-8 weeks until first WC

First choice RW, was rested at the end of last season despite being “fit” to make sure he was at his best to succeed this season. Fornals signing means noble goes to the bench, yarmolenko set to take on penalty duties after him I think. Proper bargain at 6m

around the same. the second half of the season is very tough as injuries and droppings kick in.
really important to pick a squad and also not to overfit to the template which is often only short term in nature (e.g. too many everton etc).

    Button - Long - Kelly - Greenwood

Ooooh didn’t realise Townsend was 6.0

That’s him in along with JWP, Ings & CHO - at least there are some names in the 6.0 frame that can pop up with G & A on their day

If CHO is fit he come straight into my team.

I could see CHO potentially becoming a bit like Sterling a few years ago - criminally under priced and seriously productive for FPL

I’m a utd fan & I still can’t believe they signed Daniel James, his championship record does not suggest he is anything other than average. Darius Vassell had lightning pace, probably quicker than James... it didn’t make him a top player...

I really (really!) hope I’m wrong though!

He does look great on a YouTube reel for sure, and players have made the step up from the championship before (Robertson with hull and Jota with wolves recently)

But I am beyond sceptical unfortunately - I think Man utd’s Recruitment department jumped the shark a long time ago & this is the result. They could’ve gotten Ryan Fraser for a small bit more for example - his contract has 11 months left now

As I say, I will gladly eat a full table of humble pie if he makes he grade though, it would be super - but I don’t see it personally 🙁

To anyone wondering why Dendoncker is in our teams. These are the runs in to the box he makes since they changed their system to 352. Given freedom to run into the box and get chances. Plays every week at 4.5 million in a top 7 team it’s a steal.

Everton have great fixtures and Coleman was putting in decent numbers at the back end of last season.
