Wolves defence impresses as popular FPL forwards blank

Owners of attacking assets from Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers were left disappointed as the two clubs played out a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

We’ll assess how Messrs Vardy, Jota and Jimenez performed in our Scout Notes article below, as well as looking at the other Fantasy talking points – including a disallowed goal after VAR intervention – from the Gameweek 1 stalemate.

Leicester City 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Defences were on top at the King Power Stadium in a match that featured just three shots on target.

Of the two sides’ backlines, it was arguably Wolves’ that impressed the most.

The now-familiar back three of Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett (all £5.0m) were imperious, limiting the hosts’ attacking trio of James Maddison (£7.0m), Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) to just one shot in the box all game.

Boly deservedly walked away with maximum bonus points as Wolves banked a well-earned clean sheet, with Rui Patricio (£5.0m) barely dirtying his gloves and only having to deal with one effort on target from the Foxes – an ambitious 25-yard effort from substitute Harvey Barnes (£6.0m).

The one glaring chance that Leicester had wasn’t even a shot: Vardy failing to make contact from three yards out when Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) fired over a low cross from the right.

The fact that Vardy had fewer touches than any of the 22 starting players in this match, and indeed one fewer than substitute Marc Albrighton (£5.5m) managed in a 14-minute cameo, was a testament to how expertly Boly and co handled the 32-year-old striker and his teammates.

Last week we wrote how Wolves had arguably underachieved on the clean sheet front in 2018/19 given their otherwise excellent underlying defensive stats, and there is every chance that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will crack double figures for shut-outs this campaign on the further evidence of Sunday.

Santo said of the game and his defence:

I think it was a very good game of football. Leicester are a very good team in possession of the ball.

It requires a lot of effort from us, playing together, in shape. We defended well and didn’t allow too many chances to a very good team, and we had some good chances.

Despite the Foxes having 70% of the possession, it was Wolves that looked the more likely to score.

Caglar Soyuncu (£4.5m) earned praise for his display at the heart of the Leicester defence but as a collective, the Foxes’ high backline was exposed on a handful of occasions by a direct Wolves attack.

Brendan Rodgers’ insistence on his side playing out from the back also led to a dicey moment or two.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£6.5m) both broke free of the home side’s defence early in the second half but made a hash of their chances, Jimenez dallying before producing a tame shot that was comfortably saved before Jota screwed an effort horribly wide when racing clear of Jonny Evans (£5.0m).

Jota had earlier dispossessed Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) on the touchline but could only stumble into the turf when bearing down on Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m).

The Portuguese striker’s shooting boots may have been misplaced this weekend but he was by far Wolves’ biggest threat on Sunday, his now-familiar driving runs from deep causing problems in the hosts’ backline and leading to another chance for the recently reclassified FPL forward on 40 minutes.

Indeed, no Premier League player registered more successful take-ons than Jota in Gameweek 1.

Jimenez was relatively anonymous by comparison and certainly has much to do to convince Fantasy managers that he is worth one million extra than Jota in FPL, even if he does take the odd spot-kick.

Like Wolves’ strike duo, Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) is owned by more than 10% of managers in FPL.

No Fantasy midfielder priced under £6.5m is owned by more FPL bosses and the budget Belgian almost rewarded those who started him in Gameweek 1 with the perfect gift, only for his 52nd-minute goal to be chalked off after VAR intervention following a Boly ‘handball’.

Boly would have been given an assist for that goal, had it stood, and the French stopper had earlier been in thick of the action when a Wolves set-piece caused havoc in the Leicester box.

FPL managers may baulk at the price rises handed out to Matt Doherty (£6.0m) and Jonny (£5.5m) – neither of whom, for once, was involved in the opposition box on Sunday – but Boly, who scored the same number of goals as the Irish wing-back in 2018/19, is an intriguing cheaper alternative.

Boly and his fellow defenders pretty much nullified all four of Vardy, Maddison, Tielemans and Perez, with Rodgers saying of the latter’s debut:

Just going to take that bit of time. Just that little bit of fitness, he’s a little bit behind because he’s missed a little bit of pre-season. But he’s always a threat, he finds the spaces and he’s always looking to link the game and he wants to get in and score. It’s just time with him.

The Leicester boss was perhaps wary of Wolves’ attacking threat, meanwhile, opting to start defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) over Albrighton and roll out a 4-3-3.

Explaining his formation, Rodgers said:

We played what would be 4-3-3 and that would put our front three up against their central defenders. Then, obviously, we looked to control that midfield area.

The threat that they have is that when they win it, they get two strikers through the middle and they spin out off that

I thought, in all fairness, that the players coped with it well. Cags (Soyuncu), who came in, I was really pleased for him.

Members Analysis

Leicester City XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Pereira, Soyuncu, Evans, Chilwell; Ndidi, Tielemans, Choudhury (Barnes 61′), Perez (Albrighton 76′), Maddison, Vardy.

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Neves (Saiss 81′), Jonny; Jimenez, Jota (Cutrone 76′).

Geri D gets another week in my team. He is my problem child at the moment though. Pukki I like but his fixtures are keeping me away. Kean is a wait and see. Everton can't hit the broad side of a barn at the moment.

Liverpool away didn’t deter them from attack. That makes a huge difference in evaluating fixtures for Norwich attack imo

Don’t see it immediately anyway. That was as hard as it gets.

It’s a settled side from last season with a settled pattern of play. They know the manager and he knows them. Contrast with Fulham last time out who had similar early ambitions to play. Also contrast with Villa who are at squad level quite different and harder to predict.

Not saying they’ll succeed (think they’ll do okay though) just that I don’t see them changing ideas.

Anyone watched Everton's game? Were Sigurdsson and Richarlison good? I think I'll transfer out Bilva and my options are:

    A) Sigurdsson
    B) Richarlison
    C) Martial

I already have Rashford and IMO Martial was pretty poor yesterday.

Everyone rated Mings' performance as well. Think fair to say Bmouth double up might not be as amazing as hoped so one ft be worth it to utd that look decent. Martial is very interesting value at 7.5 but rashford does look good - so maybe a question of which B player you would rather keep

Obviously going to save this GW but wondering where to begin with changes next GW.

Not liking the overall structure of my team-
Double Pool defence looking too expensive.
Is KDB too much of a luxury pick? Martial saves some urgent cash for example.
Adam Smith/King/Wilson/Perez already on the firing line too.

    Any tips here?
    Ryan.
    Robbo, VVD, Adam Smith, Coleman.
    Sterling, Salah, Perez, KDB.
    Wilson, King.
    Button, Lundstram, Wickham, Dendoncker.

If Liverpool didn’t concede against Norwich would you still be saying that?

The Bournemouth lads need to go after week 3 for sure.

Perez is absolutely fine - he is a 6.5m OOP he will be great value - can’t expect goals every game.

I’ve got KDB too and wondering the same thing. Think he is value still

It’s hard to answer any questions until we get a bit more data and see what happens in week 2.

Martial appears to now be flavour of the month but he didn’t play well yesterday so it’s just a huge bandwagon without much substance currently

Hold onto Perez, maybe review Bmouth double up after next week, possibly Pukki or Rashford with bit of changing around. Maybe one of Pool defence to a City one - still good assets but may be a bit harder without Allison and City looked strong.

I’d wait. I have King and probably he will be first to go (if I don’t get Adrian)

KDB got an assist. Could have had another and maybe even a goal. Even one assist every week over the season would be amazing. No reason to take him out yet and he’s just getting going...

How did Brighton look in attack? 3 goals flattered them?

Seriously considering Buendia in for Trossard right now . He’s going to play whatever and Norwich are obvs going for it and have a settled side. I can see them struggling perhaps midterm if the goals pile up against them. Short mid term they have a manager and team committed to a style and they know their roles. Goals should happen.

Part of the mix here is that Dendoncker looks great value at 4.5 and if Trossard is in and out I’d prefer a 4.5 first sub who is nailed and offers some threat.

Alternatives to monitor are McGinn and Robinson. But AV second half bothered me with that retreat. Not sure I want to be in a midfielder in a team that is going to try and soak it up.

Brighton had an xg of around 0.85 if im not wrong.

Some seem to think Trossard will be eased in over the next 2 games home games. Maybe come of the bench 1st and start the 2nd.

Im also looking at one of Buendia or Mcginn to replace Trossard.
But dont want to knee jerk im open to keeping Trossard for a week or two.

Sorry how does that XG translate? Did they overperforn? Think that’s what I read

Watford had similar xg and scored 0 goals.
Yes they did over perform but they do look better going forward now.

Its a tough one with Trossard tbh.
2 Fts could be worth a lot next week.

            Agreed on two FTs

I’ve always kept the hit in 3 in budget though. Question whether it’s better to do it with 3 transfers or 2 if I want it. 3 I guess us better as it leaves more options open

Trossard I could even bench next week as he looks a 60 minute player!! Kicking myself for not listening to my Potter doubts especially with all the options he now has.

Looking forward I’m very unlikely to want to keep Trossard as I’m looking for a regular there and not wanting to switch in and out at the 6.0 level.

Moutinho is still on my radar. He had the assist for Dendoncker non goal!

Ill probably sell Trossard next week for Buendia or Mcginn as I would need the money to upgrade Fraser/Wilson to Martial/Rashford.

      New manager.
      Better organised.
      Scoring goals.

Hard to say if this will continue but on the face of that game (only seem extended highlights on Match Choice), I’d say Brighton could use their fixtures to get off to a flyer.

Dilva a major doubt imo. Perhaps Bilva comes in on wing but I’m pretty sure he’ll pkay one way or the other and central must be a strong possibility

As the guy above says even if that is true it would only be a UI thing, FPL knows you made that transfer so will deduct your points accordingly. Not cool to tell people they can have unlimited transfers to ruin their seasons.

Against a well fancied Leicester side a 0-0 draw away is a good result. Will be same vs man utd at home but then fixtures begin to open up. They're unlikely to win games by 4 or 5 but Jota and Jimenez are involved in more or less all their goals one way or another. Keep the faith

Moura didn’t score and some people don’t want him this week because he got city (honestly a lot of people set their teams up
Solely for GW1 - further showing week 1 rank is irrelevant)

Martial scored a goal so in peoples minds they extrapolate from
There that he will score every week and points are good

His stats are great which is weird because I don't remember him doing anything apart from his goal and another weak SOT watching the whole match
pretty frustrating as an owner, but he's up front for United, he's going to get attacking returns
