Why has Everton’s attack been so underwhelming so far this season?

Everton’s popular attacking assets have underwhelmed Fantasy Premier League managers so far this season.

After two matches, they have scored just once, only Crystal Palace finding the net fewer times than the Toffees at this stage.

Perhaps we should not be too surprised to see Marco Silva’s men struggle in front of goal at this stage.

During their pre-season campaign, they scored just three goals in seven matches, with Richarlison (£8.0m) the only key figure missing for most of it.

One was registered against Kenyan side Kariobangi Sharks, while Monaco and Mainz were the only other teams to concede against Everton.

The Toffees drew blanks in four of their summer friendlies, against FC Sion, Wigan Athletic, Sevilla and Werder Bremen.

Of those who found the back of the net, Joe Williams and Lewis Gibson are not first-team regulars, the former now a permanent Wigan player, while Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) is the only summer goal-scorer to have played in either Premier League match so far this season.

Accordingly, ahead of a Gameweek 3 trip to Aston Villa, Fantasy managers might be looking to move on their Everton attackers.

We have assessed the underlying statistics from their first two matches of the campaign to find out if the Toffees have simply been unlucky not to score more often, or if there are some tangible reasons for concern.

Looking at defensive stats for shots in box and XGC there’s really very little between Arsenal and Newcastle. You’d take Norwich as one of the most attacking sides in the division and that probably explains the small margin that Arsenal have in fewer shots conceded.

Which do you think is the more potent attacking side at home? Spurs or Liverpool?

    1. Pukki Blinders
      • 4 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

Newcastle are poor away from home though. If I had a spurs player I'd be captaining over Pool

You think Arsenal are good away from home 😉

In comparative terms I’d say they were poorer away than Newcastle last season. Newcastle were pretty equal home and away: Arsenal strictly a home team. No meaningful data really this season for home away form.

Arsenal a top 6 team, Newcastle look like a relegation bound team right now 😉

Looks a clear difference to me.

0.8 doesn’t look that clear to me. Both are around the bottom middle group of teams. Neither clearly at either end of the scale when you look at the table as a whole.

Could the difference perhaps be that Norwich at home are rather more incisive than Newcastle at home? Liverpool of course have a worse XGC than Newcastle - also faced Norwich perhaps?

            True

But simply looking at data this season so far - which most seem to be going on - Arsenal look little better than Newcastle. I’m thinking that the Liverpool attack is more coherent than Spurs where no one knows who’ll play.

      Seem reasonable only imo

I’m seeing a few of teams there that are likely to be defensively solid and unlikely to go for more many.

SU and Palace (who should have first choice defence by then) are two examples of fixtures that could be frustratingly tight at the back despite looking great on paper

Wolves and United so far look very decent defensively.

Since you have six defenders, you can throw one out and can upgrade your mid/striker.

You risk you def for 3 player above 11.5 and 1 player 9.5, no doubt you will have poor def. Maybe avoid Mane if you wanna keep Sterling+KDB+Kane and get him when fixtures swing (by replace one of them).

But if you wanna stick with your mid+fwd, change your def to 5.5+5.0+4.5+4.0+4.0 just to strength your bench

Depends slightly if you want Sterling Kane captain rotation - it’s great.

KdB may be better value but you’ll never captain him with Sterling in your side. Captain Kane is an extra player every other week.

Also in Kane’s favour is that he purrs you in easy reach of Auba or Vardy Laca Kun if need be. (Got 250 points from one premium forward spot last season just using 2 forced transfers - they can be value)

I've got no issue with an early'ish Wildcard, but the question I would have asked myself before playing it this week is how many hits over the next 2 gameweeks would it take to get something very close to my preferred WC team? I think many managers would find a hit this GW and another next GW and you would basically have the players you're using the most valuable chip in the game for. That's the part I don't understand.

In GW5, with a bit more info to work with, a WC makes sense - it's early enough to get ahead of the pack but not so early that you regret it. I know every team is different, and sometimes you do just need to pull the trigger if there are loads of fires to put out, but I'm not sure that's the case for many.

I'm doing a mini-WC this GW with 3 transfers (-4) and there's hardly a significant difference between my starting 11 and some of the WC teams I'm seeing posted. If you want KDB and Martial, just squeeze them in. Take a hit, it's not the end of the world surely.

The problem for some is Pukki, KDB, Kane, Martial, defenders etc etc.

Still only 4-5 players, which if you saved a FT from last GW means you're a couple of hits away from your WC team in theory.

          it is what it is

Some people play aggressively, some wildcards will come off and some will be wishing they had another wildcard in 2 weeks as their previous team outscores it.

I can see a wildcard needed if your not happy with your spread of funds and it takes at least a -12 to change it about. Lots of people started with a premium defence and immediately want to shift to 3 premiums in midfield or Kane, for example.

-12 is about where it becomes a strong consideration, I agree. But at -8 I would not pull the trigger on a WC this early. Most teams I see around here could become very, very strong (read template) with a clever -8.

Agreed, some people have blown transfers in GW1 and were left with a horrible structure and no FTs after gw2... leaves them no choice really. Using WC this early on is something I'd never do, its simply too early, not enough data.

Trying not to be biased haha, but I actually prefer my non-hit team to most wildcard teams for this GW:
              Heaton
              Robertson / Digne / AWB
              Sterling / Martial / Fraser / Ayoze
              Kane / Firmino / Pukki

A lot of WC’s are anticipating a couple of (arguably controversial) things:

          1. A lack of captaincy for Salah - looking at his fixtures out to GW13, aside from GW5 & GW8, there aren’t really any obvious captaincies (Sterling & Kane have good fixs those weeks also). Always a dangerous player to sell - but there’s method in the madness.

          2. Liverpool to continue conceding the odd goal or two while Allison is out - leaves their defs very reliant on attacking returns in the short term... even though statistically TAA & Robbo have been excellent - so again - a risky, but potentially rewardy move

          3. Son to shine - he’s their best pacy forward by some distance & should start v Newcastle & Arsenal

          4. The “form” players (and form teams) to continue - Pukki, Martial, KDB, Kane, Sterling - all looking good value, nailed, with excellent fixtures also in the case of the latter four

          5. The bargains - from a squad shaping perspective we now have more certainty on a larger pool of reliable fodder to select from - so whilst addressing starting XI’s above, benches can also be very cheaply padded out now with Uber cheap players still relatively assured of minutes... incidentally those guys are already starting to creep up in 0.1’s... Also when a 4.0 OOP defender starts scoring and keeping CS’s, it’s time to get him in your squad, regardless of his indirect statistics 🙂

Put all that together and for many it’s resulting in 5, 6, 7+ transfers - IB’s can also be a good time to use the WC - in the same way that there’s more information after IB1, there’ll be even more after IB2, and even more again the following week, and so on and so on - there’ll always be more information in the future, but for many the timing is also “right” now.
