The best West Ham players for their appealing fixtures

West Ham players are now on the Fantasy Premier League radar after their 3-1 win over Watford.

The Hammers have also have a favourable streak of fixtures coming up to further interest in their assets.

Norwich come to the London Stadium in Gameweek 4 having conceded eight goals in their first three matches of the season.

After that, West Ham travel to newly-promoted Aston Villa, who have just one clean sheet in 2019/20 thus far, which came against a goal-shy Everton side last Friday.

Manchester United and Crystal Palace are the next two sides to travel to East London (in Gameweeks 6 and 8 respectively), before Manuel Pellegrini’s men travel to Bournemouth and Everton.

However, Fantasy managers will still have to ensure they choose the right West Ham player to capitalise on the form and fixtures.

We have gone over the numbers from their first three matches of 2019/20 to work out who that might be.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the new campaign can access it in full.

This week is more likely to be decided by captains than much else, with both the preseason and early season templates having good fixtures. Last week was decided by squad strength

They have an amazing run of fixtures.

“If” Martial is out you could do something like KWP, Martial and Jota to Laporte, Cantwell and Pukkhi.

Not sure what you heard, but Martial isn't confirmed out by any official source. Wouldn't be panicking about selling him yet

KWP more likely to be out, but no official word as yet either

Maybe hold the moves until you know who's in and out? Heck, Mount is a slight doubt, but I don't expect that to amount to much

I see nothing to do there. Roll, maybe? Perez to McGinn/Mount is a possibility but can be delayed for GW5 instead, in a likely double move with Wesley to Barnes for those fixtures... But I don't see...

Wait. No Pukki? Your OR explains the statement that no player is essential 🙂

It's it easier to just stick with 2/3 premiums and rotate the fringes of the squad with bench and transfers?

Premiums can get points against any team, big or small. Also almost equally capable of blanking against any team, big or small. The unpredictability makes me feel more comfortable with owning S + S + 9.5 mid for some captaincy returns (hauls are a bit more predictable) and their points over the course of a season (or long periods of it), while moving the likes of Pukki and Perez in or out in short to mid-term moves based on the eye test, stats and fixtures... Since they are more predictable

I feel uncomfortable with moving on from Kane to Kun to Auba based on recency bias (the same Kane being sold en masse actually got a brace a fortnight ago, didn't he?). Or from Salah to/fro Mane for similar reasons. I feel they'll end up at around the same points anyway, so I plan to keep until stuff like injuries, severe sudden rotation risk, and suspension

    Is there something I'm missing?

i also tend towards choosing 2 premiums and more-or-less sticking to them (salah and sterling), then rotating mid-level players based on fixtures.

not a bit fan of peter blake, or of this article actually, but if you want to hear arguments again that strategy there are some here: https://mathematicallysafe.wordpress.com/2019/07/01/fpl-analysis-what-five-seasons-of-data-modelling-have-revealed-about-predictive-analysis-fixture-impact-and-optimal-team-structure-in-fantasy-premier-league/

What do you mean? You don't want to rotate premiums, but you're fine with rotating anything else as form comes and goes?

You can argue that some premiums are fixture-proof, sure, but there is still some room to move around based on the exact same logic you use to rotate between cheaper options.

Will they end up on similar scores at the end of the season? Perhaps. Having them in your team when they haul is the important part though.

Sure, but you're still much more likely to get the big (c)hat-tricks+ with premiums with plum home fixtures over difficult ones. Just depends on how willing you are to chase the fixtures.

think having 1 city and 1 lfc premium is probably optimal, which (imo) means salah and sterling - which makes it hard to get 11m+ strikers without taking hits. arsenal/spurs have no premium mids so thats how i end up there

Yep, I'm inclined to take this point of view. I like to try and pick players I'm happy with regardless of fixtures, but I think it's wise not to be too rigid, whatever the price bracket, so that you can bring in whoever is showing form, or has irresistible fixtures.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 7 months ago

Okay, on the form point: what I'm saying is that premium assets do not generally follow the rule of form. Except for wild events like injuries, suspension and drastically increased rotation risk or clearly reduced quality (Ozil, Sanchez), premiums tend to go on unpredictable runs of, say, 3 to 4 blanks or one assist per game... Then show up with a hat trick against Arsenal/Chelsea/Man U/Bournemouth/Norwich. It's easy to miss this with captaincy, yes. But owning covers a lot

The other premium you're switching to could then start his own run of 3 to 4 blanks or sub-10 points, regardless of fixtures. It's easier to predict this with smaller teams because they tend to do better and be more expressive against fellow small teams, then focus on damage-control when facing a run of big-6 games so tend to play more on the counter or just park the collective bus

"It's easier to predict this with smaller teams because they tend to do better and be more expressive against fellow small teams, then focus on damage-control when facing a run of big-6 games so tend to play more on the counter or just park the collective bus"

Even that is questionable. It's true for unambitious teams that you probably avoid anyway, but last season Wolves would go for it against Big-6 sides, and now it looks as if Norwich are determined to play that way, with Villa and Blades not being ruled out either.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years

Out of 14 "smaller" teams than the big 6, the teams I can pick out that would pay no attention to damage control but attempt to outscore their opponents are West Ham, Norwich and maybe Leicester

Wolves don't alter their playstyle due to tougher opposition. Their playstyle just makes them better against tougher opposition, as they'll always let you have the ball anyway. So we don't get high-flying 3-2 or 4-1 scorelines as Wolves would normally contain the game to a max of 3 goals. Everton has clearly focused more on defence than attack since around GW21 or so last season, so they are not expected to come out guns blazing against City

Leaving 11/14 teams who "tend to do better and be more expressive against fellow small teams, then focus on damage-control when facing a run of big-6 games so tend to play more on the counter or just park the collective bus" - my original point

Also, recognizing the fearless teams and adding them to your team spine with S + S then rotating the other spots in your team - rather than trying to fit in a 3rd 11+ player by sacrificing other price points - might prove to be a shrewd tactic this season, especially with how unignorably cheap Pukki and Cantwell are, then the small outlay for the likes of McGinn, Barnes and Haller who might be less fixture-proof but have good runs of fixtures now and then

      3. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

It is far easier to shift cheaper options based on fixtures than premiums

This is because I would not expect Vardy to bag hauls between GWs 1 and 9 because of the block of difficulty he faces, while I would still expect Salah and Sterling to get goals and assists against the likes of Spurs and Arsenal while getting captaincy-level hauls in many games against the smaller teams they inevitably face in any block of fixtures

        I'll give examples:
West Ham from GWs 2 to 13
Leicester from GWs 9 to 18
Crystal Palace from GWs 14 to 21

Except for the wild outlier that is Wolves, most teams outside the big 6 have recorded more goals and clean sheets against fellow "small teams" than against bigger sides. This feels more predictable to me than the likes of Aguero's serial hat tricks against big 6 clubs, or Salah scoring 15 against Arsenal while Sterling had 8 against the "leaky" Bournemouth

I prefer missing hauls with captaincy to chasing hauls with transfers

Now this seems to make more sense (I'm so easily persuaded) and is closer to how I try to set up my team; a core set of players, generally big hitters and then cheaper solid players who I think are great value, and then rotate the remaining players based on fixtures and form.

However, I've been burnt in the past for ignoring players like Kane, Vardy, Hazard when they've started showing form (sometimes coinciding with fixtures) but I've stuck with my big guns because I've been busy rotating my filler players.

There's a fine line between pragmatism and stubbornness in FPL. Hard to properly catch self when drifting towards stubbornness, but I guess that's part of the fun of this game

On the Kane/Vardy/Hazard point, I doubt we have anybody who matches the pure royalty status of S+S this season. Maybe someone would emerge soon enough. Mane could stake a claim, but Salah's superior stats plus pens and pedigree still give an edge over him. Strikers have a lot to do to come near to the mids due to the unfair nature of points per goal in FPL, so it feels like Kane/Aguero/Auba would be in addition to S+S, not a replacement of either. Therein lies the temptation to rotate, as premium forwards give a true roulette when it comes to points they can grab in any week against any opponent. A Kane brace or hat trick in the NLD could have transfers flying again

            1. EMBOLOFAN
              • 5 Years

feel people overlook this. last weekends implied anytime goalscorer odds for example:
              kane 67%(*4/100=2.68pt)
              sterling 59%
              (*5/100=2.95pt)
              salah 52%
              (*5/100=2.6pt)

factor in increased odds of assist for s+s, plus decent chance of cs point, and kane is a clear 3rd in captaincy choice, even vs newcastle. and yet on here almost all kane owners who also owned one of s+s (sometimes both) captained the former.

I think its good not to have too much of a fixed / rigid strategy, as the FPL landscape is continually changing...

eg 5 premiums defenders, double Pool defence (which could still come good), double / treble BOU attack, Mane better option than Salah etc...

Budget forwards could easily go on a dry-run, and then there will be a scramble to get whatever premium forward is on a hot streak...

I think when a premium forward goes on a run, which is likely to happen, and could well be Aguero over the next few, its good to have that flexibility to get in...

The Kane move always had known risks ie Eriksen situation and tendency to drop deep / struggle against weaker teams defending deeply, even against Villa they struggled for most of the game from previous experience...

Man City situation has changed with Jesus injury and Aguero scoring 4 in 3 and a bit matches....

            1. Alan Watts
              • 5 Years

And the Eriksen issue / lack of creativity, is a change in the Spurs dynamic....which justifies moving Kane out

depends if you believe “runs” (consecutive overperformances) are predictive or largely down to variance

OK call runs form then, Aguero is currently on one, premiums tend to maintain a run of good form over a set of fixtures...particularly easy ones...so Id say there a pretty good probability of Aguero scoring well over the next 3-4 games, based on his current form, team form, previous history, and fixtures...

I did call it what I wanted - simply runs of good form scoring lots of points, not "consecutive overperformance / variance"...

We've seen Kane and Aguero do it many times before, likewise Salah / Sterling...

Auba is a more difficult call due to Emery farting around with formation changes / benchings etc

I don’t have Sterling and have Kane.

If Martial is out more two weeks then Martial > Sterling and Kane > Barnes/Haller seems sensible. If he’s fit for GW5 then it’s between Kane > Kun and Kane/Dendoncker > Greenwood/Sterling.

Does that all sound right? Or do I just do the last move and hope Greenwood plays if Martial out?

All sounds sensible. Though I would like Sterling over Kane or Kun long term, so possible the first move even if Martial is only out for a week, or find another way to bring Sterling in.

Kun looks good for at least the next game. Jesus news would be welcome.

If you're that averse to a drop, i'd go with Haller and play him in gw5 as well before reassessing from there.

      A. Haller now, Barnes GW5. You'd need some spare cash though. And I hope you aren't planning to sell Haller for Barnes, as one-GW moves should be left for Free Hit or pre-wildcard weeks

      B. VVD by quite some margin, until Gomez is injured or clearly becomes a backup

Hey DZ, which front 8 do you prefer, please?

    Sterling, KdB, MANÉ, Ceballos, Cantwell
    FIRMINO, Pukki, HALLER

    Or

    Sterling, KdB, SALAH, Ceballos, Cantwell
    KANE, Pukki, GREENWOOD

    Thanks!

Hard to look past Barnes, but it also depends if you think you could use the extra funds elsewhere.

Mane/Firmino is a snug fit I guess. Firminho has just never really seemed to get the hauls I'd want for someone at 9.5.

Price falls are based on net sales as percentages of their own ownership.
Large numbers of low-ownership players selected mainly by casuals who turn out to be non-starters are likely to see early price falls.
A smaller number of over-hyped players who are favoured by non-casuals but are not owned by many casuals, and who have disappointing early returns may also see their prices fall.

Price rises however are based more on volume, and many transfers in are for a smaller number of template players some of whom already have fairly high ownership, so there aren't so many of them.

    Salah sterling kdb perez (trossard)
    Haller pukki (greenwood)

    A......perez to mount - 4

Any recommendations for this team? Was thinking to hold the FT.

    Pope (Button)
TAA Digne KWP (Lundstrom, Rico) - will play Rico if KWP out
    Sterling Salah Maddison Mount Trossard
    Kane Deulofeu (Greenwood)

Deulofeu already dropped so may as well keep (Newcastle) and he had 113 Threat rating last week - to put that in perspective, Pukki had 114 in his hat trick game against Newcastle.

Would be nice to have 2 FT going into the international break. Still holding my WC too.

Any chance of Perez returns this weekend against Bournemouth?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

Same as any other right-winger facing Bournemouth. Not the strongest defensive opponent, so there's the possibility of a gifted goal/haul

I'd feel comfortable selling Perez though. Even with a hat trick vs Bournemouth, the replacement could outscore him and rise in price between GWs 5 and 8

I might be biased from selling Perez in GW3. Felt like a huge weight off my team after the eye test had him on negative scores two GWs in a row
