Is it time to sell Barnes as Wood hits form for Burnley?

Ashley Barnes (£6.6m) has now gone four consecutive matches without an attacking return.

With so many blanks in a row, his owners are likely looking at whether they should be offloading the Burnley forward ahead Gameweek 8.

That said, the Clarets do face another favourable fixture this weekend as Everton come to Turf Moor. The Toffees have conceded at least twice in each of their last five matches.

However, the complicating factor in assessing Barnes’ potential is the recent form of Chris Wood (£6.2m).

Since the former Brighton and Plymouth Argyle striker last found the net, Wood has scored three times.

Is that a trend that will continue in Gameweek 8? We’ve assessed some of the most recent matches to find out whether Barnes is worth holding or if his colleague Wood is hogging the spoils at Burnley.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Has Barnes been unfortunate not to score recently?

    For GW9-12:

    a. Vardy + Son + Soyuncu (max 5.1 def)
    b. Auba + Mount/Maddi (max 7.2 mid) + Ota

    thanks

    A) save transfer
    B) Aguero to Auba for free
    C) Aguero to Auba and Wickham to Abraham for -4

Assuming both start who scores more this GW:

Wasn't first 11 tbf - when Sterling came on within 10 mins he scored.

I think it's a toss up, I guess I'd say Kun, I think he's more explosive, but I have no stats to back that up with

I don't think Sterling is much better without De Bruyne, but his output has improved slightly in the past.

Aguero's numbers absolutely take a hit without De Bruyne.

      That's a tough one.

Auba has been consistent this season, but at the same time not all that explosive at the Emirates. In fact, I don't think he's scored a brace in the league, at home in 2019.

Aguero comes with a bit of risk. Will he start? He played 89 mins last night, and Jesus started the same fixture last season, scoring twice. His appeal also takes a bit of a hit if De Bruyne is confirmed out.

I still think Aguero edges it, but its close and could go either way.

Cheers for the insights. If it's close between them this GW then I think Auba is the better bet seeing as he is guaranteed to start. Kun's minutes midweek already mean I wouldn't be comfortable captaining him in any case.

Yep that's true, Jesus played 66 mins on Sat tho 🙂

Tough one to call, and it makes giving Aguero the armband a bit of a risk. Glad I don't own him this week to be honest.

    TAA Tamori Lundstram

    Benched: VVD, Hanley

Is it wise to bench VVD in favour of Lundstram?

Personally I can see a Liverpool clean sheet. Even United kept Leicester out. Leicester aren't great at breaking down organised defences; I can see a 1-0 or 2-0 Liverpool win and I own both VVD and TAA. Lundstram first on my bench to cover KDB.

Poch's job has to be put into question. Last night was the culmination of his excuses, ego and inconsistency with team setup. The money excuse isn't going to work either, he's been backed heavily this summer and most of his stars got extensions - with absolutely nobody worthy of note being sold.

Ultimately he's been there 5 years and won 0 trophies.

        His words come across excuses.

        19/20: N'Dombele 60m, Lo Celso 50m, Sessegnon 30m. No big players sold.

Admittedly no players signed in 18/19, but worth mentioning Liverpool didn't sign anybody this summer either.

17/18: Sanchez 40m, Moura 30m, Aurier 25m, Llorente 15m, Foyth 15m. Only note worthy sale was Walker 52m.

If you ask me, that's some pretty nice backing considering they had to fund a spanking new, shiny stadium.

I don't think many managers are. Directors of Football choose targets these days - Txiki and Edwards do so at Liverpool. I think Poch is proving to be a world class development coach, but a not so special manager. The public handling of the 'rumoured' Vertonghen issue has been poor too.

Think is with Pep and Txiki is they are very much on the same page. I guess that's the same at Liverpool with Klopp and Edwards? I'm not so sure the same can be said about Poch and Levy. That's the impression I get anyway.

Perhaps so, but I don't get the impression that someone as savvy/stingy as Levy would ever sanction 50m+ signings on players his manager doesn't approve - especially when they need to pay for the stadium.

Aye, he's the reason they lost the CL final too. The difference in Son/Lucas CF against the top teams than Kane is very telling.

Given their crisis', you would have imagined bids from United and Madrid by now, if Kane was really worth what Levy would ask for him.

Tbf, 2 of his signings this summer are injured. I think if he was backed a couple of seasons ago, like Klopp was, then they might not be in this mess

    Which do you prefer:

A Hayden to Mcginn free - bench kdb and captain Aguero
B kdb and Aguero to sterling Aubameyang (-4) captain sterling

Feels wrong to take Aguero out for a hit but thinking I might’ve called it wrong going him over sterling on wc 2 weeks ago

Each week I’ve been happy enough with my team but I’ve been slowly dropping down the ranks (1.8m currently)

        Pope
        TAA / Digne / Lund
        Salah / Sterling / KDB / Cantwell
        Tammy / Pukki / Haller

        (Mings / Rico / Dendonk)
        2FTs 0.1ITB

Time for something a bit more adventurous?

        A. Salah + Haller to Auba & Mount (with Pukki to Vardy next week)
        B. Simple Digne to Soy/Pereia/Tomori/Ota and re-evaluate after international break?

The only thing holding me back are the fixtures for Pukki / Haller:

          P: AVL - bur - MUN - bha - WAT
          H: CRY - eve - SHU - NEW - bur

They look about as good as they're ever going to get, especially Haller.

But Vardy and Aub fixtures are solid as well. Too many good options...!

        KDB, Sterling, Cantwell, Salah*, Son*,

        TO:

        Söy*, Otam*, TAA*
        KDB, Sterling, Cantwell, Yarmo*, Mount*
        Vardy*, Aubameyang*

Yeah not great for gw8, but thinking long term.
Selling Pukki is the main risk, as Vardy has a much tougher task in gw8, but Vardy has decent record in tough games.
I don't mind losing Son, Salah and Zinch for gw8 so much, as they're replaced by Auba, Yarmo and Otamendi, so it's much of a muchness there for points potential this gw, but after this week Bournemouth and Leicester fixture list looks sweet.

Feels to me like Mendy is being eased back in to get back up to speed.
Think post-IB would be the time to give him a league start after a spell with Pep on the training ground, so I'm optimistic that Zinch gets one more week.

Bernardo Silva has been charged with an "aggravated breach" of FA rules for his Mendy tweet. Whenever punishments have been handed out for this kind of breach in the past, it's included a ban, small fine and "face-to-face" education.

I'm not sure what to make of the situation. I didn't find his picture offensive, but I did find his video offensive. I suppose people are offended in different ways, and some aren't at all.

tbh it doesn't really matter whether you, I or absolutely anyone is offended. Those kind of images and jokes have traditionally been used to actual, tangible effect that goes way beyond mere offence. I don't think for a second Bernardo intended that, or even to offend, but there is no place whatsoever for them anymore in this country so it is right that he (and Pep for his dreadful response imo) should be subject to the rules and disciplinary structure we have to prevent them.

I totally agree with you. There was nothing offensive in the comparison. The 'lookalike' culture had more absurd and bizarre comparisons and everyone was fine. And now it's - guys, let's just not do this anymore and pretend it's wrong. Was Mendy offended? Mbappe seemed to like the post. But the FA's Big Brother decided for everyone that they should feel collectively offended. And I totally understand Pep being pissed about it both in football and social terms. You must wear a poppy, but God forbid you wear a yellow ribbon. And now his player must apologise, be chastised and 'educated' like a child instead of playing. (What video?)

No. The 6 match ban is for face to face racism. For social media its situational and lot depends on intent. Could go off lightly with 3match ban as he dint have any malice in the video tweet, just ignorance.

The 6-match minimum only applies to incidents that happen during matches.

It's nuts that if it was the other way around and Mendy had compared Mahrez to say Snap, Crackle or Pop, because it was White vs White wouldn't be deemed racist.

The video earlier in the year about naked because dressed in black is racist, but the comparing Mendy to a character on a packet of spanish sweets isn't. IMHO of course.

If Bilva is banned for a bit, it enhances the chances of playing time for Sterling, Kev if fit and Mahrez.
I'm not doing anything until the international break when I know more about Kev, but my earlier plans were to swap Sterling for Mahrez to free up funds. That's still my plan and Bilva's issue makes me more confident about sufficient game time.

I think it's because in predominantly white countries, 'black people look the same' is a much more recognisable racial epithet than 'white people look the same'. One is seen as more unacceptable than the other because it's been used to justify malicious racism enough times for it to become more controversial.

Maybe 'racially insensitive' is a more accurate category for Silva's case though.

I think a comedian could possibly pull the joke that Silva tried to off. I mean the clothes bit.

But do we really need an outside arbiter to preach how two buddies should and shouldn't joke around? Was the problem that Silva made that joke public? Is Western society being over-sensitised to respond to certain triggers? Does Silva, or anyone, still has the right to a bad joke?

Morning all. This was my 4-4-2 lineup last week:

                          Pope
                          Otamendi Vert Söyüncü Lowton
                          Sterling Mane Son Lanzini
                          Auba Abraham

Thinking of moving Vertonghen and Dendoncker our for Rico/Kelly and Burundi’s as I’ve no Norwich coverage. That would give me:

                          Pope
                          Otamendi Lowton Söyüncü
                          Sterling Mane Son Lanzini Buendia
                          Aubameyang Abraham

What you guys think? Is Rico/Kelly nailed-on?

                          Hi all,

                          Team is currently:
                          Pope / Button
                          TAA / Soyuncu / Aurier / Lundstram / Otamendi
                          Salah / Sterling / KDB / Mount / Cantwell
                          Pukki / Abraham / Greenwood

Which of these do you think is best for this week?
                          a) Salah & Greenwood > McGinn and Auba (captain Auba) (-4 point hit)
                          b) Aurier > Diop
                          c) Hold FT

                          Thanks

if it's your plan & you're still ok with it belt away.

either can score well. Yes pool's fixtures aren't all green on the ticker but I'm expecting returns still from Salah tbh

Own both Son and Kane and was planning to hold both for at least a couple of weeks, but not so sure anymore. Do we think Spurs will kick back and go to Brighton determined to prove a point, or was last night more demoralising and is there risk for a free fall?

I was going to do Kane to Vardy... but gonna hold 2 more weeks at least... fixtures too good.

feels like i'd regret selling & missing out on points more than keeping & blanking... if that makes sense

They were embarrassed last night but Kane and Son still both scored.

Arsenal are atrocious, but people still want Auba.

Tbf Arsenal are in the top 4 after going to Anfield and OT in their first 7, they would have taken that before GW1 I think.

                                Scaping past sun-standard opposition.

Complete detachment between the front 3 and the rest of the team, and still one of the worst defensive units in the league.

I really believe Emery is one of the worst managers in the top 10.

Yeah agree the scoreline was embarrassing, but Bayern scored with pretty much every shot they took. So question is if Spurs can come back from it. I'm not convinced about Auba at that price. Fixtures are obviously ridiculously good, but I think he suffers from Lacazette being out. And I preferred Spurs fixtures to Arsenal up until last night..

If Auba is having his best season to date and offers better value than almost all premium defenders, does it matter if he would be better with Lacazette?

I think he benefits from Lacazette being out. Would he have been central against United to slot home the equaliser, or would he have been shunted out to one of the wings?

Neither are impacted by Spurs' defensive frailties, unless you bought Son for his 1point CS potential..

I own both too, as they continue to offer attacking returns, and now Eriksen is up and running, why would you switch either out because of defensive frailties? If Spurs have to score 10 to win a game, I'll take it 🙂

They will not be rolling over teams anytime soon though. And the fact that the opposition scores against them decrease their chances of BAPS as well. They are too expensive for 5-7 pointers for single attacking returns, we have McGinn and Mount for that.

They beat Palace 4-0 a couple of weeks ago, and play Watford at home GW9. I'd be very surprised if they don't roll them over.

... but they're still scoring goals regardless - two against Bayern, two against Saints with ten men for 60 mins etc.

There are clearly issues at Spurs, but Watford are dreadful. I can see why Kane/Son owners would hold for the next two, then reassess.

No need to remove them too.

As they are giving points, irrespective of how they are playing

Yes, your attackers are likely to get 1 attacking return most likely without baps, if they keep scoring 2 and also conceding.

There are issues at Spurs, we know that, but if they can hit two against an in form Bayern side, two against Saints with ten men for the majority of the game and four against Palace previously, they can do damage against Watford.

In a GW where Arsenal travel to Sheff United, Man City travel to Palace and Liverpool travel to United, I can see the merits in keeping them a little longer, that's all I'm saying.

Fair. I'm probably getting rid of Son for Mount this to free up funds for Lei assets next week

I do think Son is at risk of rotation GW9, and thats the one you want him for, so I can see why you'd make that move... but I also see why some would hold... if that makes sense 🙂

Stop trying to talk sense with this guy. He clearly has a deep hate towards Spurs(probably Arsenal fan) and been waiting years for this moment. I'd bet he won't drop Son as he's suggesting.

Which of my points made you think I have a deep hate towards them? I own and have always owned spurs assets and to good use. This year they are not freely attacking (except at palace) and Kane and Son are not worth it since they are unlikely to get you Mega hauls, Mount and McGinn are getting similar points and are much cheaper price points.

Also, they provide me with plenty of moments to make fun of them, this is not a one off. Its Spurs mate not Mancity.

And I even told AVFC82 that his point is fair, so it was less of an argument.

Fair point, McGinn and Mount are good options too.
Kane though has baps in each of his last two games, and I think Spurs' attack is just revving up having missed Son at the start of the season (& preseason), and Eriksen being distracted for the first few weeks by am impending exit from the club.
I struggle to see what impact a big loss in the CL has on their PL attacking potential. Kane and Son owners don't need 3-0 wins, 3-3 draws will do just as well.. (12pts vs 10pts, I'll still take em).

Its not just a big loss, there is internal turmoil at the club and its there for everyone to see. The big loss is more a consequence of that than something that will cause consequences.

The question should be, will Eriksen play regularly?
They scored 14 goals in 630 minutes, 13 of them in the 425 minutes Eriksen was on the pitch. 1 in 205 minutes without him.

Brighton at home this season - 3 games, 2 goals conceded.

When a club like Spurs loses like the way they did , you expect a huge reaction from the players. And they will be itching to go on the field and get back to winning ways.
