Captain Sensible

Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 8?

Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with another tricky captaincy debate for Gameweek 8.

Liverpool host a Leicester side looking very committed to breaking into the top four while rotation and injury fears plague our Manchester City assets.

We’ve assessed the key candidates for the armband this weekend using individual and team data.

As this uses information from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

After ending his Premier League goal drought in Gameweek 7, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) has returned to the summit of the latest captain poll.

The Manchester City midfielder comes into the weekend backed by 28% of those that have voted so far (as of Thursday lunch-time).

His owners will have been encouraged by two things they saw of Sterling midweek.

Firstly, he was rested for the majority of the win over Dinamo Zagreb, emerging only as a 56th-minute replacement for Bernardo Silva (£7.9m).

Secondly, Sterling was involved in both goals after he arrived on the pitch, reminding his owners what he is capable of.

Playing in a much more central location than we have seen in recent Premier League outings, the England international scored the opening goal and provided the assist for Phil Foden‘s (£5.2m) stoppage-time strike.

Meanwhile, Wolves come to the Etihad Stadium with just one clean sheet in their last six and a goals conceded tally that reads 11 in that time – an average of 1.8 per game.

We thought that Sterling might have to fight off some interest in Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) for the Gameweek 8 captaincy but his recent groin problem has drastically affected the poll results.

Before the injury was confirmed, the Belgian ranked third with a 15% share of the vote but in the last few days, he has dropped to eighth and the backing of just 3.2%.

Currently second in the poll is Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who is still yet to blank this season.

He has scored in all but one Premier League match in 2019/20, and in all three at the Emirates Stadium so far.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth come to north London with no clean sheets on the road yet this season – which is why 20% of those who have voted in the poll fancy more attacking returns from Aubameyang on Sunday afternoon.

Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) has a fairly strong hold on third place in the poll, garnering the support of 12%.

His benching for the trip to Everton is probably enough to put some Fantasy managers off the Argentinian, especially given he registered 88 minutes against Zagreb.

However, if he does start, which he often does at the Etihad Stadium, Aguero is also without a blank this season. In three home matches, he has a total of four goals and two assists.

Teemu Pukki (£7.2m) may be without an attacking return on the road since Gameweek 1 but the Norwich forward has scored five of six Premier League goals at home.

Aston Villa come to Carrow Road this weekend having conceded seven times in their last three away matches in the top flight.

That combination of statistics will be why Pukki is the best of the rest in the top this week, pulling in 7.2% of the vote in the captaincy poll.

In fact, the Finnish striker has more support than Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) for the Gameweek 8 armband.

The Egyptian does arguably have a trickier fixture as Leicester come to Anfield in good form and praised for recent defensive displays.

However, Salah has been in exceptional form at home this season. In his first three Premier League matches at Anfield he has registered four goals and one assist, for an average of 12 points per game.

Should that form continue, the 6.7% of managers who captained him for Gameweek 8 will feel very happy indeed, especially with many looking elsewhere both for the armband and for transfers.

Son Heung-min (£9.7m) now has attacking returns in each of his last three league outings, and was one of the few players to score for Spurs in their absolute humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich midweek.

That has led to 4.7% of our voters backing him for the captaincy in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off at Brighton.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) also found the net in that 7-2 defeat and has scored or assisted in each of his last four Premier League matches – hence the 3.2% interest.

Tammy Abraham (£7.6m) may have blanked in each of his last two at Stamford Bridge but he travels to Southampton on Sunday afternoon with six goals in each of his last three away matches in all competitions.

Therefore, 2.9% fancy him as an outside bet for the captaincy in Gameweek 8.

Sadio Mané (£11.6m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) are the only other options with more than 1% backing.

Is Sterling this week a great example of mass captaincy being based on a player being “due” rather than based on his eye test, statistics or performances? I’m not necessarily saying that’s a bad thing btw as he is almost certainly “due” tbf

But whilst he has a nice fixture and a bit of a rest, he has pretty much failed to deliver FPL points on every occasion it’s been expected of him season to date (but, but - he’s Scored 6 goals in 6 appearances!)

Let’s be honest - 6,8,3,2,0,7 is a terrible run for a 12.0+ player... particularly when he’s gone 3,2,0 against BHA, nor, WAT

Yet he *should* be hauling this weekend given the circumstances

It's more the herd mentality. The fear of missing out. If I had Sterling in my squad - I also would probably captain him, so I am no different in that respect. Would love to be brave enough and stick in on Pukki, but as it stands, I have second-best option this week of Auba and that's whom I've captained. I agree that so far Raz has failed to live up to expectations. I tilted and got rid of him after the 8-0 Wat game. Not a proud moment, but here we are...

    2. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 5 months ago

Well you can't really count the zero against him since he dint play.. So that's 2 blanks out of 6 games. And you conveniently chose the games just after his 20 point haul. He also looked fantastic midweek so is not in bad form at all. Looks nailed to start this week since he just got 30 odd mins midweek too. Very good captaincy choice imo

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

The zero has to count - it’s part of the package with Raz, it can’t be brushed under the carpet

Similarly the 20 was 7 games ago, in a match he wasn’t really expected to deliver in (Mo ran away with the captaincy poll)

He definitely looks a good captaincy choice on paper as I said above - despite his failures season to date - which is an interesting dynamic that clashes somewhat with some of the FPL fundamentals of (premier league) eye test, statistics and performances over last 5-6 games. A class over form situation if you will

At the end of the day his team have had 3 home games - he’s gone 6,3,0... Auba has had 3 home games he’s gone 6,9,5... Mo has had 3 home games he’s gone 12, 15, 9... Kun 6, 16, 9

It’s just interesting that “due” will (and should?) take priority over other fundamentals in certain situations

Due for what ? he just scored in his last game and any other day would have scored another. Hes the 3 rd highest scoring mid in the game and will amass 200 points. not to mention he has the most goals out of any midfielder in the game. There are just some debates that dont need to take place

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 5 months ago

“Due for what?” Maybe for having his living room replastered?

2 blanks in 7, most goals out of any midfielder, 3rd highest scorer in the game - all true

          6,8,3,2,0,7 is a terrible run for a 12.0+ player - also true

Poor premier league performances for 5-6 games also true

A hugely interesting situation, and one that will obviously get people’s hackles up at the slightest hint of a discussion on the
          topic

I’m a non owner btw just to be transparent, and I *probably* would captain him over Mo or Auba although possibly not as Mo’s home form has been so strong to date, despite Leicester obviously being a much improved outfit this year

Yeah I’d say there’s no chance of truncated minutes and/or a benching with Pep in charge, and with 180 England minutes looming over the IB

You asked if he is going to be used as an impact sub vs tired legs more frequently. I get that you're trying to sound cool with the sarcasm but what you said is Unrealistic, and different from what Pep Roulette means.

So we’ve solved the first problem which was likelihood of Pep repeating what he did 2 days ago (sounds like zero chance?)

And we’ve also solved the follow-on problem of chance of truncated minutes and/or a benching with Pep in charge England duties and the IB looming? (Sounds like zero chance?)

Is there even potentially a third problem of those dreaded “international injuries” rearing their head?

I find it a fascinating situation - particularly if Man City are anywhere near comfortable around the 50 minute mark

For me he's one of the best players for the highest scoring team and with a very high ceiling. Both kdb and aguero are risky this game week, therefore sterling is the obvious choice. For me he has passed the eye test of late and has been unfortunate to hit the bar once or twice (although maybe his goal on the weekend was a tad fortunate). I don't own Auba and Salah has a tough fixture, therefore i'll captain Sterling and vc Tammy or Pukki. Nothing to do with the masses. I think perhaps you're overthinking thinking this.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

Well I have (repeatedly now) pointed out that he looks a good captaincy choice on paper tbf - but there just seems to be very little acknowledgement of his poor run of premier league form (6,8,3,2,0,7 - for 12.0+), and/or the chances of truncated minutes with an IB looming, an “international break injury”, and/or even the dreaded benching with Pep in charge

No doubt he’s basically a forward scoring points as a midfielder for an absolutely lethal attack though, you won’t hear me trying to disagree with that - but that has also been the case for the last 6 GW’s

        1. Bushman
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 5 months ago

Yeah I know you didn't call him a bad choice. I haven't captained him all season despite owning since the beginning because you never know which citizen is going to take home the points. And I don't trust him as much as I do say Aguero. However on this occasion, given doubts around Aguero and KDB, he is the best option for me and despite his form being faltering, he has passed the eye test over the last few games and he should be nailed.

This might sound a bit silly but would you sell Son?
Bri and WAT are tasty it WAT arrives just 4 days after Son plays in Korea so a clear rotation risk here.

Planning to drop him after WAT anyway so is it worth doing so right now and go for a better option/punt ?

When is the Tierny bandwagon due to start? Give it a couple of gameweeks to see if Arsenal start keeping clean sheets + Tierny a regular starter (which he should be)?

He looked very good against whoever it was Arsenal played in the EuroVase last night. Sadly, it's the midfield giving the ball away endlessly that causes the problems.

Who would you captain out of those:
    A) Son
    B) Salah
    C) Pukki
    D) Tammy
    E) De Bruyne (if fit)

    Pope,
    Otamendi, TAA, Lundstram, Dunk
    Mane, Sterling, Son, Cantwell
    Tammy, Pukki

    Button, KdB, Greenwood, Hanley
    1FT, 1,2 ITB

    A - Mane, Greenwood -> Yarmolenko, Auba (-4)
    B - Son, Greenwood -> Yarmolenko, Vardy (-4)
C - KdB, Greenwood -> Yarmolenko, Vardy (-4) (if KdB is ruled out for long today)
    D - save FT

How would you fix this team with 2 frees?

    Pope
    Trent lundstram Hanley*
    Salah (c) KDB* Son Cantwell*
    Kun* Abraham Pukki

    Bench, Woodman*, Hayden*, Mings, Soyuncu.

    2FT 0.1ITB

Best I've come up with is Son, Hayden, Hanley to Otamendi, Mount, McGinn for a -4...

Any thoughts on these moves or better ones?
