Captain Sensible

Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 8?

Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with another tricky captaincy debate for Gameweek 8.

Liverpool host a Leicester side looking very committed to breaking into the top four while rotation and injury fears plague our Manchester City assets.

We’ve assessed the key candidates for the armband this weekend using individual and team data.

As this uses information from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

After ending his Premier League goal drought in Gameweek 7, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) has returned to the summit of the latest captain poll.

The Manchester City midfielder comes into the weekend backed by 28% of those that have voted so far (as of Thursday lunch-time).

His owners will have been encouraged by two things they saw of Sterling midweek.

Firstly, he was rested for the majority of the win over Dinamo Zagreb, emerging only as a 56th-minute replacement for Bernardo Silva (£7.9m).

Secondly, Sterling was involved in both goals after he arrived on the pitch, reminding his owners what he is capable of.

Playing in a much more central location than we have seen in recent Premier League outings, the England international scored the opening goal and provided the assist for Phil Foden‘s (£5.2m) stoppage-time strike.

Meanwhile, Wolves come to the Etihad Stadium with just one clean sheet in their last six and a goals conceded tally that reads 11 in that time – an average of 1.8 per game.

We thought that Sterling might have to fight off some interest in Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) for the Gameweek 8 captaincy but his recent groin problem has drastically affected the poll results.

Before the injury was confirmed, the Belgian ranked third with a 15% share of the vote but in the last few days, he has dropped to eighth and the backing of just 3.2%.

Currently second in the poll is Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who is still yet to blank this season.

He has scored in all but one Premier League match in 2019/20, and in all three at the Emirates Stadium so far.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth come to north London with no clean sheets on the road yet this season – which is why 20% of those who have voted in the poll fancy more attacking returns from Aubameyang on Sunday afternoon.

Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) has a fairly strong hold on third place in the poll, garnering the support of 12%.

His benching for the trip to Everton is probably enough to put some Fantasy managers off the Argentinian, especially given he registered 88 minutes against Zagreb.

However, if he does start, which he often does at the Etihad Stadium, Aguero is also without a blank this season. In three home matches, he has a total of four goals and two assists.

Teemu Pukki (£7.2m) may be without an attacking return on the road since Gameweek 1 but the Norwich forward has scored five of six Premier League goals at home.

Aston Villa come to Carrow Road this weekend having conceded seven times in their last three away matches in the top flight.

That combination of statistics will be why Pukki is the best of the rest in the top this week, pulling in 7.2% of the vote in the captaincy poll.

In fact, the Finnish striker has more support than Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) for the Gameweek 8 armband.

The Egyptian does arguably have a trickier fixture as Leicester come to Anfield in good form and praised for recent defensive displays.

However, Salah has been in exceptional form at home this season. In his first three Premier League matches at Anfield he has registered four goals and one assist, for an average of 12 points per game.

Should that form continue, the 6.7% of managers who captained him for Gameweek 8 will feel very happy indeed, especially with many looking elsewhere both for the armband and for transfers.

Son Heung-min (£9.7m) now has attacking returns in each of his last three league outings, and was one of the few players to score for Spurs in their absolute humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich midweek.

That has led to 4.7% of our voters backing him for the captaincy in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off at Brighton.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) also found the net in that 7-2 defeat and has scored or assisted in each of his last four Premier League matches – hence the 3.2% interest.

Tammy Abraham (£7.6m) may have blanked in each of his last two at Stamford Bridge but he travels to Southampton on Sunday afternoon with six goals in each of his last three away matches in all competitions.

Therefore, 2.9% fancy him as an outside bet for the captaincy in Gameweek 8.

Sadio Mané (£11.6m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) are the only other options with more than 1% backing.

    Pope / Button
    TAA / Otamendi / Soyuncu / Lundstram / Rico
    Salah / Sterling / KDB / Mount / Cantwell
    Barnes / Pukki / Abraham

Listening to AZ and Luke's FPL Top Guns podcast and they make a great point that FPL should be seen in 'blocks', i.e. fixtures:

Arsenal: BOU, shu, CRY, WOL, lei, SOUT
City: WOL, cry, AVL, SOU, liv, CHE
Lei: liv, BUR, sou, cry, ARS, bha
West Ham: CRY, eve, SHU, NEW, bur, TOT

L'pool: LEI, mun, TOT, avl, MCI, cry

Personally, I'm looking to do Salah and Barnes > Yarmolenko and Pukki this week, and Pukki > Vardy next week.

I have no other pressing concerns in my team (unless Cantwell/KDB's injuries are long-term), and I see this fixture block as a great time to try and get ahead of the curve.

Of course, getting rid of Salah doesn't come without its risks. But Mane looks like the superior, central goal threat during games where they play 4-3-3, and Firmino's GI has massively improved.

People (rightly) point to Salah's home returns this season, but they were against Norwich, Newcastle and Arsenal; 3 of the poorest away teams in the league. His next 3 home fixtures are Leicester, Tottenham and City - who are arguably 3 of the toughest away teams. Combine that with 2 assists (his 'assist' against Chelsea was hardly an assist; Mane actually won the free kick whereas Salah just nudged the ball to TAA) and no goals in 4 away matches and suddenly I think you have an argument that Salah could be *considered* as expendable for this next block of fixtures.

Salah is always expendable when an alternative exists, which is almost always

If you want his relative consistency (over a season) then your lump your money on him and defend him until the cows come home. He's headache free. But he's also completely expendable. It's not 2017 when he was 8.5m or whatever

Exactly. I guarantee that a lot of the highest ranked managers so far this season do not have Salah.

I think that's the reason why most on FFS are having a difficult season - because so much of their money and captaincies have been taken up by Salah without as much reward as we'd hoped.

Virtually the same team as me and I had the same plan
Salah,Barnes > Yarmolenko, Aubamayang then Pukki > Vardy next week.

However with the KDB injury I’m now looking at KDB,Barnes > Yarmolenko/Maddison,Aubamayang instead.

Means I can hold Salah and Pukki but miss out on Vardy.

Salah > KDB later is always an option.

Good plan. Salah is my cash cow for Auba (can't afford it if I only downgraded KDB), so I'm hoping Cantwell can come on as my first sub for KDB!

Fortunately I have 1.8m itb to do that.
Torn between Maddison and Yarmolenko if I go this way.
          Yarmolenko better this week.

Pellegrini's been talking him up too. Saves you 1 mil and you won't be doubled up on Leicester if you move for Vardy.

More relevent here is arsenal have been average, not terrible, and yet he has scored every week.

Salah and Auba are tied on points at the moment. Auba is 1.5 cheaper than Salah and has significantly better fixtures than Salah.

Of course there's a risk involved but I can see why people (myself included) are considering it.

      Sterling, however, is going nowhere.

Teams Salah HASN'T scored against so far this season:

              Southampton
              Burnley
              Chelsea
              Sheffield Utd

The teams you listed are, on paper at least, generally more difficult to score against than the ones I've listed.

Conversely you could list the teams that Salah has scored against. Can't see the relevance of this with regard to the state of the defences of the sides he is about to face.

I am greatly optimistic after their kids performed so well in the EL. Bellerin is back and if crucial to their link to Auba, Martinelli offering a threat to Auba himself. Doing fine points wise in the league. Fought back well shading Villa with ten men. Good fixtures. Reasons to be optimistic about attacking returns

Well some of those "kids" should be starting in my opinion. Hector and Tierney soon rather than later, but I would also play Chambers as centre half and Willock as well. And have Martinelli at least in the bench ready to go. Very impressed with the brazilian kid... is gonna be FPL gold at some point.

Have an almost identical team (Salah over Mane, and Cantwell over Dendonker), and I'm just wondering why you are wildcarding next week? I don't see how you can really improve on that lot.

There is a possible option to to save a FT and get Auba in with 2FTs next week, but aside from that can't think why you'd wildcard

Do we think the Lingard injury improves Greenwood's chance of a start this weekend? He's my best bench option if KdB is out, already starting Lundstram!

Think of it this way. If it does turn out that he's just sitting out this one for safety, you'll be using 2 X FT and about 0.2 in value for an average return of maybe 5-10 points minus whatever your fodder would score. That transfer based on averages would

                Make 2-7 points
                Cost 2 FT + 0.2m

Not great value for those points

How is that a worst case scenario?!?

A worst case scenario is your player blanks and you used 2FT and burned 0.2, possibly more FTs if you can't afford to replace directly.

That's a totally possible, not even very unlikely WCS

                        Whatever works for you

I already own Son. I'd rather bench KdB for a couple of games and go with Lundstram. Fingers crossed he'll be back after one. No indication yet he won't play tomorroe

I lack trust in Pep’s words so I think it’s better to sell now. I am getting Anderson in a prep to do Pukki/Abraham > Vardy if KDB is actually out longer but if not I will get him straight back if not. Just keeping my options open rather than tying my hands behind my back. My bench options are not very good this week which is adding fuel to the fire

Pereira for sure. KDB obviously unlikely to play but wouldn’t be the end of the world as big P could find himself on the wing given his goal scoring form and the need to double up on mane

Need to make a move in case of KDB no show:

              1) Hayden to Saka
              or
              2)Aurier to Tomori

Tbh Saka punt looks tasty but maybe it's too much?

Hayden's bad is longer, right? More of a priority sale than Aurier, I think

My captaincy is between Sterling and Pukki, and I’m currently leaning towards Pukki.

His stats at home are better than Sterling’s while Aston Villa is worse defensively than Wolves.

              Any takers?

Have seen people point to Bernardo coming off early in the CL in midweek as a sign that he'll start over Mahrez on the weekend. So I decided to look into how being subbed at 60' or earlier in games Man City weren't winning comfortably impacted minutes in the next game. Using data since the beginning of last season, I discounted instances where City were 2 or more goals up, the substitution was made due to injury and I only included Community Shield, PL and CL games.

All relevant examples are listed below:

Chelsea 0-2 Man City (Sane subbed 45')
On the bench vs Arsenal 7 days later

Arsenal 0-2 Man City (Mahrez subbed 60')
On the bench vs Huddersfield 7 days later

Man City 2-1 Newcastle (Jesus subbed 58')
On the bench vs Fulham 14 days later

Man City 1-2 Lyon (Gündogan subbed 55')
Starts vs Cardiff 3 days later

Chelsea 2-0 Man City (Sané subbed 53')
Starts vs Hoffenheim 4 days later

Man City 2-1 Hoffenheim (Stones subbed 45')
Benched vs Everton 3 days later

Man City 2-3 Crystal Palace (Otamendi subbed 50')
Benched vs Leicester 4 days later

Everton 0-2 Man City (Sané subbed 59')
Benched vs Chelsea 4 days later

Man City 1-0 West Ham (Mahrez subbed 55', Sané subbed 57')
Both benched vs Bournemouth 3 days later

Man City 1-0 Leicester (Foden subbed 56')
Not in squad vs Brighton 6 days later

Bournemouth 1-3 Man City (Gündogan subbed 58')
Benched vs Brighton 6 days later

Norwich 3-2 Man City (Gündogan, D Silva subbed 57')
Gündogan starts, D Silva benched vs Donetsk 4 days later

              What does this mean?

Of the 14 times this has happened, only 3 players went on to start the next game. Therefore, any Mahrez buyers/owners should be encouraged by the fact that he wasn't the one to get substituted early in midweek. Also, it suggests that Pep isn't necessarily the fraud that he's made out to be, as there is a strong and logical pattern (in this instance, at least).

I dont think there is any pattern whatever in Pep's mind.
he just pick the guys he deems fit and needed to win the next match.
So please, don't waste you time proving some patterns guys.

When you have a squad like his, its normal to choose the fittest players to win

Looking at alternative options if I don't wc during the IB. Best multi move?
              A. Salah and Pukki to Vardy and Mane (safe route).
              B. Salah and Gwood to Auba and Maddison.
              C. Salah Pukki and Gwood to Auba Vardy and Guendouzi (or sub 5m mid - won't play much) (-4)

Rico or Lundstram (4.4) on WC? Bearing in mind Howe's comments today:

Howe on Diego Rico: "I've been very impressed in recent weeks, I think he's had a decisive say in a lot of games, if you look at the assists that he's made for the team. His corners and free-kicks in recent games have been really valuable for us. He's grown into the position, he's growing in confidence all the time. The challenge for him is to maintain that progression and if he does, with his qualities, he's going to be an important player for us."
