Burnley defensive assets on the rise as home form impresses Fantasy bosses

Burnley 1 Everton 0

Goals: Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: James Tarkowski x3 (£5.0m), Hendrick x3, Nick Pope (£4.6m) x1

A Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m) goal earned Burnley a hard-fought three points as Everton slumped to a fourth straight Premier League defeat.

The Republic of Ireland international volleyed home an Ashley Westwood (£5.4m) corner to underline the Toffees’ inability to defend set-pieces.

That was the sixth time Everton have conceded from set-plays this season, a league-high figure, and once again highlighted manager Marco Silva’s Achilles heel – his time in England has now involved 45 goals allowed from dead-ball situations.

Hendrick scored for Burnley as Barnes (left) blanked once again

The beleaguered boss was not helped by the dismissal of Seamus Coleman (£5.4m) for two yellow cards; one either side of the break. The right-back will now miss the Gameweek 9 visit of West Ham to Goodison Park.

The first came for a late challenge on Erik Pieters (£4.8m) which left the Clarets defender in need of treatment on his ankle. He never truly recovered and was taken off after 54 minutes, thus denying his 12.8% ownership any vital clean sheet points.

Only goalkeeper Nick Pope (£4.6m and 14.9%) is owned by more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers among Burnley’s players, but the combination of this week’s international break and boss Sean Dyche’s post-match assessment suggests Pieters should be okay for Gameweek 9 in a fortnight’s time.

“I am waiting to find out the exact details, but it is a sore one that is for sure. He has tried to carry on but couldn’t quite finish the game, but hopefully it is not too serious. I will find out more in the next 24 hours.” Sean Dyche

Erik Pieters had to be withdrawn at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon

Coleman (2.5%) will definitely miss the next fixture through suspension, although it is his fellow full-back Lucas Digne (£6.0m) who remains the bigger concern.

His 22.7% ownership have now endured four straight blanks, having banked consecutive clean sheets at the start of the season and two assists by Gameweek 4.

Digne’s attacking threat has stayed consistent throughout, but the team as a whole have lost their way as an offensive and defensive force, with only two goals scored in their current winless run – and a minimum of two conceded in all but one of their last six matches.

Digne owners have had a frustrating time with the Frenchman this season

Not that either side were exactly bristling with danger at Turf Moor.

They managed only 20 attempts between them – one fewer than Norwich City had on their way to a 5-1 beating by Aston Villa.

Hendrick’s goal was one of only five shots on target in the whole match, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.6m) and Richarlison (£7.9m) both forcing saves from Pope, while Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) should have done better from close range, only for his tame attempt to be blocked by Matthew Lowton (£4.5m).

Sigurdsson was substituted in the 59th minute as a result of Coleman’s red card

It was no surprise, then, that members of Burnley’s backline brought in most of the bonus points, with Pope earning one and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) sharing the maximum award with match-winner Hendrick.

The centre-half topped the clearances, blocks and interceptions chart (CBI) with 11 and won six of eight aerial duels.

That helped the Clarets to a second clean sheet in three outings, and three out of four home matches, ahead of a schedule that suggests more of the same in the medium term.

Nick Pope and his Burnley colleagues are providing regular defensive returns in home matches this season

Burnley might be hard pushed to keep out both Leicester City and Chelsea after the international break, but the four games that follow – away at Sheffield United and Watford and home to West Ham and Crystal Palace – look much more promising.

And if Pieters’ injury proves to be something more serious, his replacement against Everton, Charlie Taylor (£4.2m), offers a low-cost way into an efficient defensive unit.

Such efficiency is less pronounced up front, however,

Midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) led the team with three attempts on Saturday – a total that strike partners Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) and Chris Wood (£6.2m) could only muster between them.

Barnes is now without a goal in

Barnes, in particular, has gone completely off the boil since scoring four times in the first three matches of the season.

His ownership peaked at 760,000+ managers in Gameweek 5 as a result, but that’s now down to less than half a million, or 6.9%, and it’s easy to see why when you take a look at his output during his five-match drought.

He has led the way for attempts, with ten, over that period, but only one of those was on target. During the same spell, Wood (1.3%) has managed three goals from nine shots, five of which were on target.

We recently did some research into Burnley’s two main strikers to see which had the better Fantasy potential, CLICK HERE for the results.

Barnes and Pieters now find themselves in the top 30 for sales ahead of Gameweek 9, with Digne in the top ten.

Fantasy managers may still have a hard time giving their Everton assets the red card in the coming weeks

The temptation to hold on to Everton assets is still just about there, however.

The Toffees have a solid run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, with their trickiest task probably a visit from Spurs – a club as deep in the mire as they are at the moment.

Perhaps the key factor in deciding whether to retain Everton players will be the future of their manager.

The international break could be the ideal time for Silva to reset and redirect his players. It could also be a nice long stretch for the board to fire him and find a replacement.

Silva himself was in no doubt as to the importance of Gameweek 9’s visit from West Ham.

“The players know what we are doing but we need results. At this club, we had worse moments than this and we reacted well. We had a fantastic period and showed what we can do. I don’t have doubts about doing that again. We have to stick together to change things and the next one is a must-win game.” – Marco Silva

Unfortunately for him, the Hammers are proving no pushovers on the road this season – they’re unbeaten across their four away days to date.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters (C Taylor 55′), Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Hendrick, Gudmundsson (Lennon 84′); A Barnes (Rodriguez 73′), Wood.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Mina, Keane, Coleman; Delph, Schneiderlin (A Gomes 84′); Iwobi, Sigurdsson (Sidibé 59′), Richarlison; Calvert-Lewin (Kean 74′).

TTA for Robbo. TTA on corners and free kicks. Looks more dangerous vs Robbo.

He's a rotation option, especially with Europa and will predominantly be playing at RWB. Moved up front for the last 20 minutes against City when Doherty came on.

Is Gazzaniga at 4.4m a decent option considering:

    - I could play the WC this IB - Lloris is out until January?
    - I’m happy with Pope as my no 1.
    - I’m happy with spending 0.5 to rotate keepers (currently Heaton)

      Stay on Pope and Heaton.

I’m no longer on Heaton/ Pope rotation but wish I still had the option (Pope/Button now after WC6)

38 keeper points from Pope then Heaton for 4 games and last 3 Pope. Pope 22 Heaton 16

I think the option to move to double Pool def is a good point. For now I’m on cheapos so would need more moves to make the switch.

Trouble is Ota and MCI defence really doesn’t look worth using up valuable funds on atm

        This is my wildcard team:

        Pope McGovern
        TAA Pereira/Tomori Soy Rico Lund
        Mane Sterling KDB/Mahrez Mount Dendo
        Vardy Wilson Tammy

Sold Otamendi due to my lack of faith in City CS potential for now. Same reason I wouldn't have VVD until Alisson returns, and even then, I'd rather have Robbo

        1. Pukki Blinders

My structure is very similar, still tinkering though. Just a matter of Vardy v Maddison and whether to have Auba or not

            4 years, 5 months ago

I haven't been tempted by Auba this season. Not with that midfield behind him

If I had somehow played a Free Hit for GW8, I'd have got him and capped... And look what happened

Not his fault, but Emery's. And that's a lingering problem

I know. That's the type of consistency I like... But somehow won't cap

Knowing myself, my captaincy would be on Salah/Mane and Sterling for most of the season, except if they prove themselves to be crap. This makes Auba a luxury premium, much like Kane

Would have been a good idea, but see my team without Auba and try to squeeze in a team with more non-captaincy points with Auba in it. That's the problem

I can't afford your team, my TV is pretty bad, didn't get on Mount or Tammy early. Similar structure and same forward line though.

Took some crazy early-season hits that somehow worked out. I think I'll do the same again next season

Some bandwagons died: Pukki, Barnes, Cantwell, Martial

Some have stayed. The benefit of my early moves is that I've been able to sell the dying wagons for profits and keep the sustained wagons. Set me up for this luxury wildcard, as I could have gone without it and just taken -8, but didn't see the point

I think I'll do the same next season. Would have worked last season with Mitrovic, Moura, Jimenez, Doherty, Wilson and Fraser, but I was still relatively new so I stuck to the patience advice from veterans

Do you also think it's a valid strategy for future seasons?

      Evening gents!

I decided last night to take the plunge with a -8 which gives me this team:

      0itb
      Heaton*
      VVD*, Soy, Rico/ Lunds
      Mané, Sterling, KDB, Mount
      Vardy, Wilson, Abraham
      (Button) (Lunds/ Rico, Cantwell, Kelly)

Plan is either to play WC later before deadline if needed or to stick with this and save WC.

My only remaining “concerns” are Heaton and VVD (i.e not having TAA) but no cash itb so beyond dropping Sterling on a WC I don’t see a solution for now.

      Thoughts?

      Thanks

Yeh Heaton has been really frustrating to own!

Just feels a bit of a waste to use WC when already so close to a good team with a -8

      2. Ze_Austin

        WC for these reasons:

Cantwell to Dendo to raise funds; Heaton to Pope (not sure why Heaton hasn't been getting many save points); Button to McGovern

They sound like small moves, but I hit the button for a similar reason. Not sure we'll really need a WC badly for GW13 anyway. as the major move then would be to get Robbo

Next chance to WC is... Err... GW19?

Thanks for the detailed reply mate!

I’m seriously tempted to play it. Just feels wrong when I’m already so close to the template WC after only -8.

Feels like a WC should involve more wholesale change

            • 5 Years
            4 years, 5 months ago

Accept the fact that you have a good team, no matter what your rank is

Salah/Mane + Sterling means you won't be making wholesale changes anyway. Not with the value in Mount, Tammy and Lund

You have the luxury of making 6 changes without hits. Do you see yourself needing it later?

Of course, having a red-flagged team can occur, but I feel those would be more justified with hits 🙂

              • 6 Years

              All good points.

I guess the “will you need the WC later” question is impossible to know. I just like the idea of having it as an advantage over the tons of people that have already played it!

What are your thoughts on going TAA and Robbo double up now? Utd can't attack, Spurs are awful away, Alisson back and they might look to keep it tight in those games, would also save surgery getting Robbo in the future.

One of the reasons I refuse to Wildcard, is about the lack of options in defense. Everyone is going cheap and most teams doesn’t seam balanced. So, I think you are probably right and can be a nice diferencial.

Liverpool has been playing a higher line than usual this season. It's not only the Alisson absence, to be fair

That's why we see Robbo and TAA going even crazier in attack. I think it started midway through last season... When TAA became nailed

I'm staying away from the double-up until a clearer chance of clean sheets than Spurs, Man U and City. I agree that Man U and Spurs aren't good enough now, but they're still good enough to score once against a high line. Compounding this tale is my love for Rico, Lund, Wilson, Vardy and Tammy... Taking up the funds and slots for a double-up

If Robbo + TAA would fit nicely into your squad due to funds and structure, go for it. Robbo has hauls in him from any game anyway

Of course i am. But only if I downgrade Otamendi to 4.4 in order to get Maddison for Mcginn. Don’t know if it’s worth it.

To get Vardy, would have to sacrifice Sterling or Salah.

In either way, I had to hit WC to do that kind of surgery.

Course he will. Ownership of a lot of those players is small, Vardy, Madison, Soyuncu, Mount & Abraham sword.

If they bang, he’ll climb. Ignore them, remember the community is such a small bubble of the actual game. Example: everyone owned Pukki after GW4? Actually, almost 60% didn’t.

West ham defence with no fabianski? I don’t mind the triple Leicester either

That spot is up for change, thinking maybe Lowton but west ham fixtures look good

Can I get some love for my team?

      RMT

      Ota / Soy / Tomo / Rico / Lund
      Mane / Madd / Mount / KDB / Cant
      Kun / Auba / Tammy

        3-4-3?

That front three is pretty terrifying, but lot of value tied up there, esp with kun at risk of rotation. Unless you are wedded to having all three, could downgrade kun/auba to upgrade 3rd mid or fit TAA in

Nice TV, I’m not near that but can do a decent 442 with my TV fitting in Mane salah and KDB and vardy and Tammy up top

Is it crazy to go without Auba or Vardy on WC?
I like Wilson Tammy and Jimenez more right now

Not at all, other places you can spend the saving well

I think it's crazy to go without either.

I think Tammy for sure. But then you gotta pick between the other two. Jimenez being cheaper appeals, but Wilson also a good pick. Although if he blanks vs Norwich, his fixtures suddenly look bad and his underlying stats are not good either.

Yeah I will probably have some money in the bank
So maybe I will go for those 3 this gw and then get Vardy for Wilson after Watford game

            1. AndyCook
                4 years, 5 months ago

If I had money in the bank I’d have Vardy now, showing himself to be a flat track bully. Wilson to Jiminez then if needed?

          Gazzaniga / McGovern
          TAA / Pereira / Tomori / Lundstram / Rico

I think Abraham is the best value striker right now especially given the fixtures

Need to lose one of Mane, KDB or Sterling on WC for funds - who goes?

Was thinking mane before last weekend but with recency bias now not sure?

Not sure about Mane and Sterling, but providing he is back the next GW, I wouldn't touch KdB
