Burnley defensive assets on the rise as home form impresses Fantasy bosses

Burnley 1 Everton 0

Goals: Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: James Tarkowski x3 (£5.0m), Hendrick x3, Nick Pope (£4.6m) x1

A Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m) goal earned Burnley a hard-fought three points as Everton slumped to a fourth straight Premier League defeat.

The Republic of Ireland international volleyed home an Ashley Westwood (£5.4m) corner to underline the Toffees’ inability to defend set-pieces.

That was the sixth time Everton have conceded from set-plays this season, a league-high figure, and once again highlighted manager Marco Silva’s Achilles heel – his time in England has now involved 45 goals allowed from dead-ball situations.

Hendrick scored for Burnley as Barnes (left) blanked once again

The beleaguered boss was not helped by the dismissal of Seamus Coleman (£5.4m) for two yellow cards; one either side of the break. The right-back will now miss the Gameweek 9 visit of West Ham to Goodison Park.

The first came for a late challenge on Erik Pieters (£4.8m) which left the Clarets defender in need of treatment on his ankle. He never truly recovered and was taken off after 54 minutes, thus denying his 12.8% ownership any vital clean sheet points.

Only goalkeeper Nick Pope (£4.6m and 14.9%) is owned by more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers among Burnley’s players, but the combination of this week’s international break and boss Sean Dyche’s post-match assessment suggests Pieters should be okay for Gameweek 9 in a fortnight’s time.

“I am waiting to find out the exact details, but it is a sore one that is for sure. He has tried to carry on but couldn’t quite finish the game, but hopefully it is not too serious. I will find out more in the next 24 hours.” Sean Dyche

Erik Pieters had to be withdrawn at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon

Coleman (2.5%) will definitely miss the next fixture through suspension, although it is his fellow full-back Lucas Digne (£6.0m) who remains the bigger concern.

His 22.7% ownership have now endured four straight blanks, having banked consecutive clean sheets at the start of the season and two assists by Gameweek 4.

Digne’s attacking threat has stayed consistent throughout, but the team as a whole have lost their way as an offensive and defensive force, with only two goals scored in their current winless run – and a minimum of two conceded in all but one of their last six matches.

Digne owners have had a frustrating time with the Frenchman this season

Not that either side were exactly bristling with danger at Turf Moor.

They managed only 20 attempts between them – one fewer than Norwich City had on their way to a 5-1 beating by Aston Villa.

Hendrick’s goal was one of only five shots on target in the whole match, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.6m) and Richarlison (£7.9m) both forcing saves from Pope, while Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) should have done better from close range, only for his tame attempt to be blocked by Matthew Lowton (£4.5m).

Sigurdsson was substituted in the 59th minute as a result of Coleman’s red card

It was no surprise, then, that members of Burnley’s backline brought in most of the bonus points, with Pope earning one and James Tarkowski (£5.0m) sharing the maximum award with match-winner Hendrick.

The centre-half topped the clearances, blocks and interceptions chart (CBI) with 11 and won six of eight aerial duels.

That helped the Clarets to a second clean sheet in three outings, and three out of four home matches, ahead of a schedule that suggests more of the same in the medium term.

Nick Pope and his Burnley colleagues are providing regular defensive returns in home matches this season

Burnley might be hard pushed to keep out both Leicester City and Chelsea after the international break, but the four games that follow – away at Sheffield United and Watford and home to West Ham and Crystal Palace – look much more promising.

And if Pieters’ injury proves to be something more serious, his replacement against Everton, Charlie Taylor (£4.2m), offers a low-cost way into an efficient defensive unit.

Such efficiency is less pronounced up front, however,

Midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) led the team with three attempts on Saturday – a total that strike partners Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) and Chris Wood (£6.2m) could only muster between them.

Barnes is now without a goal in

Barnes, in particular, has gone completely off the boil since scoring four times in the first three matches of the season.

His ownership peaked at 760,000+ managers in Gameweek 5 as a result, but that’s now down to less than half a million, or 6.9%, and it’s easy to see why when you take a look at his output during his five-match drought.

He has led the way for attempts, with ten, over that period, but only one of those was on target. During the same spell, Wood (1.3%) has managed three goals from nine shots, five of which were on target.

We recently did some research into Burnley’s two main strikers to see which had the better Fantasy potential, CLICK HERE for the results.

Barnes and Pieters now find themselves in the top 30 for sales ahead of Gameweek 9, with Digne in the top ten.

Fantasy managers may still have a hard time giving their Everton assets the red card in the coming weeks

The temptation to hold on to Everton assets is still just about there, however.

The Toffees have a solid run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, with their trickiest task probably a visit from Spurs – a club as deep in the mire as they are at the moment.

Perhaps the key factor in deciding whether to retain Everton players will be the future of their manager.

The international break could be the ideal time for Silva to reset and redirect his players. It could also be a nice long stretch for the board to fire him and find a replacement.

Silva himself was in no doubt as to the importance of Gameweek 9’s visit from West Ham.

“The players know what we are doing but we need results. At this club, we had worse moments than this and we reacted well. We had a fantastic period and showed what we can do. I don’t have doubts about doing that again. We have to stick together to change things and the next one is a must-win game.” – Marco Silva

Unfortunately for him, the Hammers are proving no pushovers on the road this season – they’re unbeaten across their four away days to date.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters (C Taylor 55′), Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Hendrick, Gudmundsson (Lennon 84′); A Barnes (Rodriguez 73′), Wood.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Mina, Keane, Coleman; Delph, Schneiderlin (A Gomes 84′); Iwobi, Sigurdsson (Sidibé 59′), Richarlison; Calvert-Lewin (Kean 74′).

Spurs and West Ham's defensive stats were crappy even before their main keepers got injured. Avoid

Saka is a pending transfer once Laca is fit. Could work for now though

Keeping Robbo is locking you from Mount. Not sure how much of an advantage that gives you, if not a disadvantage... But that's your decision, so yeah 🙂

    1. Salah + Pukki -> Maddison + Aubameyang (1.4m).
    2. Salah + Wickham-> Maddison + Wilson/Vardy. (2.1m/1.0m).
    3. Other- WC etc.

    Pope.
    VVD, Otamendi, Robbo.
    Cantwell, Mount, KDB, Sterling, Salah.
    Abraham, Pukki.

isnt it great that LIV have finally won their first PL title in the Premier League era?

Steven Gerard must be the most relieved man after his slip cost LIV the title a few years ago?

Everything going their way, last minute penalty, man city stunned vs a tired Wolves side at home.

If LIV throw this away, Klopp will go to back to Germany & Salah, Mane & Firmino will play in La Liga or join some other PL team.

    Pope
    Ota, Soy, Tomori
    Son, Sterling, KDB, Mount

one thing a lot of the stat types overlook at this point in the season is the relative difficulty of fixtures that have already been played. everton have only played once against the top 6 so far, whereas leicester have played 4 of the top 6 already (with 3 of those games coming away from home). this is going to have quite a drastic effect on numbers both at team and player level.

anyway, for anyone interested, tim bayer's come up with a good model for normalising xG and xGC relative to the strength of opponents played against so far. small sample at the moment but going to be good i think.

With the news, that Jimenez will not take part in Mexico's games over the IB, does Pope + Pukki -> Gazzaniga + Jimenez -4 sound decent?

Would obviously only do it Lloris is out long term. I know Spurs are shambles of late. But a GK from a(former) top 4 side priced at 4.4 is surely a good pick none the less? He just have to keep up with the likes of Pope, Henderson and Ryan? I can't imagine Spurs not bouncing back.

Do people actually watch football here? If yes, it is very clear, he is playing way too wide on the left side trying desperately to play the Sane role, doesnt get any tap ins bcoz well, he is way to wide & he spends all his playing time near the throw-in line.

29.4% of people own Kun, yet hardly anyone here seems to have Kun, who despite his blank is a far superior player, always in the box, on penalties, rotation with jesus is overhyped.

Which concludes that people here just follow the same boring template.

the same goes with salah vs mane.

his underlying numbers are better than last year and there's no immediate reason to expect that he won't revert to similar conversion rate. the "far superior" player didn't manage to outscore him last season iirc

last year sterling was on the 'right wing' theoretically but since sane played LW and provided a lot of width, Sterling was practically a center forward like Kun. Last year, a bulk of his goals were tap ins like Ronaldoesque bcoz he was much more central.

This year, no Mendy, no Sane, so he is like a LW.

Ideally Pep should play Mahrez on the left & Sterling on the right if he wants Sterling at his best. or play 4-1-3-2 with

        either silva- kdb- mahrez

        kun- sterling

It's not nonsense. Sterling do play too wide. But his point is just over exaggerated. Could be circumstantial, could be Pep trying new things.

I still think Sterling is an excellent option though

He still plays too wide. I'm not talking about his stats, but his movement. He could get into better positions if he wasn't out wide that often. I'm not saying Regin is on point here, just that Sterling plays too wide and that he is right about that. Hence to ''some extent'' in my post below

He is not. The stats shows TOUCHES in the box. Not how often he positions him self in the box hence ''movement'' and ''positioning''. I'm confident a heatmap would back this up.

it doesn't. him being in the box without touching the ball isn't something you should be concerned about

Now this is nonsense. Of course it matters! If your not in the box, your not gonna be at the end of KDB's crosses for instance. Of course it matters. What are you on about? The more he is in the box, the higher the chance is for him to score a goal.

what you require from sterling are shots, involvement with ball inside box and chances created. taken as a whole he's outperforming last seasons numbers. simple as that.

There are plenty of variables your overlooking. Movement and positioning is key as well as explained above. How he ''touches'' the ball in the box matters as well. Did he dribble from out wide into the box and lost the ball? Where in the box did his touches stemp from? A scoring position or not?

Do you watch football or you just look at stats?

It all made sense to some extent until the Salah vs Mane comment. Not similar to the Aguero vs Sterling debate at all.

Salah on pens, occassionally on corners as well, argueably more selfish than Mane, more shots etc.

Do agree that Sterling plays too wide though. But I also believe this will change when Mendy gets more regular playing time. I still own Sterling. But if the trend continues the next few weeks, I will shift Sterling out for Salah or Mane for sure.

dont think mendy will be a regular this season, he will be in & out of the team due to his constant injuries.. cancelo, zinchenko, angelino & even laporte (if fit) can play LB.

Salah vs Mane a different topic really. but Mane looks more sharp.

I've got my concerns about Sterling.

What with his price dropping, being played out on the left, not being 100% nailed on for every game, Man City's poor play atm and a price of 12mln.

If l take out Sterling, l can make x3 good transfers. l can transfer in Maddy, Mount, Abraham and Robertson.

Due you tho this a solid punt?

That he doesn't get in the box enough. The more he gets in the box, the higher chance he has of scoring a goal.

We're not speaking of his position as a ''LW'' on the team chart, but of his positioning and movement in game.

Mane and Salah are both classified as wingers for instance. But they get in the box often.
