Budget defenders the real winners of Watford’s draw with Bournemouth

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Ben Foster x3 (£4.8m), Nathan Aké x2 (£4.9m), Craig Cathcart x1 (£4.4m), Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.5m)

Watford and Bournemouth played out a lively 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road that saw the home side extend their winless run to ten games.

Fantasy Premier League managers may also be increasingly concerned about the Cherries’ recent goal drought.

However, there does appear to have been a significant improvement for both Watford and Bournemouth in defence, offering up some potentially viable budget options.

Wilson has now blanked in three consecutive matches

Eddie Howe’s side have now failed to score in three consecutive league games as the early-season form of Callum Wilson (£8.0m) continues to feel a long time ago.

The England international delivered attacking returns in each of the first seven Gameweeks of 2019/20 but has now blanked in the last three – two of those favourable meetings with Norwich and Watford.

Wilson’s striking partner Josh King (£6.3m), who was benched for Gameweek 9, was restored to the starting line-up but looked a shadow of his former self too.

The former Blackburn Rovers man, who has scored two goals and registered three assists so far this season, now has just two attacking returns since Gameweek 6.

Fraser was relatively lively but could not carve a breakthrough for his side

Ryan Fraser (£7.1m) and Arnaut Danjuma (£5.8m), making his first league start of the campaign, did their best to add some width to the 4-4-2 formation but could not serve up the goods.

Howe stated his concern post-match at his side’s lack of goals in recent weeks.

“Keeping a clean sheet away from home is positive, but having our third game without scoring is certainly a negative. We don’t normally struggle to score but today at least we did not struggle to create chances.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth now have a testing run of fixtures over the next seven Gameweeks, in which they face four of last season’s top-six.

Whether Wilson and King can be considered worthy of investment after having blanked against relegation candidates Norwich and Watford remains to be seen.

Next week’s clash against Manchester United could be a make-or-break occasion for those managers in ownership of either of the Cherries’ attacking duo.

Rico went close to getting more attacking returns for Bournemouth but did pick up a yellow card for his troubles

Perhaps Fantasy managers should start turning their attention to the other end of Bournemouth’s squad as they kept a second successive clean sheet in Gameweek 10.

This highlights, in particular, the value of Diego Rico (£4.2m), who impressed against Watford and could have added to his attacking returns, as he continues to share corner-taking duties with Fraser.

The left-back unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the first half, forcing a save out of Ben Foster (£4.8m).

Gerard Deulofeu was paired with Roberto Pereyra in a two-man strike-force

It must be said though that Bournemouth were helped in this latest clean sheet by a continued lack of cutting edge from Watford.

The Hornets should have arguably gone in front after Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) missed a golden opportunity to assert an early level of control over the visitors.

Quique Sanches Flores’ side continued to look lively throughout the afternoon’s fixture, with Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) striking the post directly from a corner too.

This was the sixth time this season that Watford have failed to score in the league this season, with their five goals scored the joint-lowest of any team in the division, level with Newcastle.

Janmaat’s price and attacking station are worth monitoring

Despite the Hornets’ lack of goals, Flores can take solace in the fact his side are seemingly displaying an increased sense of defensive resilience following their humbling at the hands of Manchester City last month.

Since that 8-0 demolition, Watford have conceded just three goals in four games, suggesting that some of their defensive options, many of whom have depreciated in price, could be worth considering.

Another promising performance from Daryl Janmaat (£4.3m) in the right wing-back position of Flores’ 3-5-2 system should keep him on our Watchlists for now.

Adam Masina (£4.3m) was deployed on the left but may lose his place to Jose Holebas (£4.7m) when he returns from suspension.

The manager confirmed he was pleased with his side’s defensive performance:

“We had our chances, we did not concede goals and we had a good team spirit and this is really good for the future. Defending well is a good base, but I can feel when we are on the opposition’s box the players are still a little bit nervous and they can sometimes take bad decisions. I think the first win is getting closer, the difference with the other teams is not so big and I’m really confident for the future.” – Quique Sanchez Flores

Watford’s injury woes continued right from the off against Bournemouth. Tom Cleverley (£4.9m) was forced to leave the pitch after just 10 minutes with a suspected ankle problem, Will Hughes (£5.5m) replacing him.

Fantasy interest in Cleverley is unlikely to be high but Hughes might be worthy of monitoring given his potential for attacking returns in the past.

Watford XI (3-5-2): Foster; Kabasele, Dawson, Cathcart; Masina (Foulquier 73′) Chalobah (Gray 57′) Cleverley (Hughes 10′), Doucouré, Janmaat; Pereyra, Deulofeu.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico, Aké, S Cook, Smith; Danjuma (H.Wilson 64′) Billing, Lerma, Fraser; J King, C Wilson (Solanke 74′).

Going through this season's leader-board of FPL, there are some interesting observations to be made.

The current top 5 have never finished inside top 100k. Current rank 6 has two top 50K finishes previously but none inside top 10K. Current Rank 8 is the first person to have a previous top 10K finish but he has used up all his chips already. While they are doing well, you wouldn't really bet on any of them to win FPL based on either their pedigree or chip usage pattern.

So, to look for the potential favorite to win FPL at this stage, I decided to check further down the list to find that player who ticks both boxes of a previous top 10K finish and all his chips currently intact. I come close at Rank 36 (Jay Boss), who has a top 15k finish previously and no chips used till now. But I finally find my man at Rank 48, and lo behold, it is none other than Magnus Carlsen, the World No. 1 chess player.

Two takeaways from this - (1) If you are not doing well yet, don't panic as the leader-board has not yet settled. There are a lot of people at the top of the summit who probably wouldn't be able to maintain it over the season; (2) We can probably call Magnus Carlsen the top contender for FPL title at this stage.

I see no evidence of that from the last 6 weeks, j don't think he'll start v saints after starting mid week either and I'm done with the big IF he starts, Vardy to match him comfortably over next few and for much better value. Vardy rose and Aguero dropped last night also.

Buy Wilson - starts to blank

made 2 FTs for next week just before the Leicester game started and got Boly in only to learn that his ankle is fractured now.

Didn’t know Vardy will become such hot prop and I got D Silva in - no way to get Vardy now. FML

Think it’s finally time to get rid of Digne, 9 points from the last 6 gw’s for any player isn’t acceptable let alone a 6m defender!!

Owners, who’s your replacement and why?

At what point do you usually use your wildcard. I have 4 players I feel like I need to get rid of (Masuaku, Otamendi, Haller, Pukki), but I do have 2FT to use so could probably sort those 4 out over a couple of GWs, but by then I might have even more I need to change

I mean I have a playing bench but I wouldn't expect anything more than 2 points from someone like Dendoncker. I was more meaning 14 playable players who you'd be happy to start any of them

Not necessarily. Just feel like there's always a significant change of the template around Christmas time. Saw it with United last season, Alli/Eriksen the season before. This season there's an added bonus that I can sell Pool attackers for gw18 blank and wildcard them in after they've played Leicester.

I've needed a wildcard on four different GWs this season, combining form, stats and fixtures. Each GW after, I've needed another WC to fix some mistakes based on completely unprecedented data from the WC week (like Pulisic's hat trick's effect on CHO)

Except if your team is in complete shambles, you'll keep thinking you do/don't/didn't need it until GW19

      1. Carlton_Goal
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 5 months ago

That's true, I suppose there isn't a clear and obvious time to use it. My team isn't a complete shambles, I'm fairly happy with the rest of it, but Masuaku and Otamendi in particular need to go so I actually have players that are starting

Targett fixtures are great - rule him out

Rico cheapest so if .1/.2 counts then he’s an option but fixtures aren’t great

Janmatt on good form with 3 great fixtures after the next GW

Lascelles has a really good run of fixtures - NC have shown they can keep a CS

Either or should do you ok as a cheap option

Rico is currently the best of those, but I'd be surprised if Bournemouth keep many CSs in the upcoming games. Watford & Norwich were anaemic up front.

Jaanmat is not a terrible option. (He's outscored Rico in the last three.) It's just a shame he and Rico have a difficult patch of games in the same kind of time frame.

    Morning folks.

    Pope
    TAA / Pereira / Lundstram
    Mané / KDB / Maddison / Mount
    Vardy / Wilson* / Abraham

    Button // Boly* / Cantwell / Rico

Finally had a decent week, although with Boly's injury and Wilson's impotence, have a few areas to address. (2 FTs, 0.9 ITB.)

GW12 looks horrible across the board and was part of the reason I had those two. Shame it hasn't panned out.

    A) Wilson/Boly/Cantwell > Robertson/Jimenez/Dendoncker (-4)
    B) Wilson/Boly/Cantwell > Robertson/Jimenez/Hayden (-4)

It'll be interesting to see if Dendonker drops back to CB with Boly out. Probably not, but potentially.

    C) Wilson > Jimenez

Alternatively I could just get Jimenez this week, bench Boly (risk a drop) and play Lundstram. It's just then, I don't get Robbo in before the Man City match.

    D) A/B, with VVD instead of Robbo. No hit.

    E) Other?

No. I want Grealish in GW15. The tough defences for a nailed AVL winger are Liverpool, Man U and City. Chelsea is unlikely to stop them
